7638 All of king is long. But it's sooooo good!!!!

7638 I'm about half way through, and it's OK...but feeling more chick lit than I was expecting. I have several ebooks on loan from the library, so as this is one I own it keeps getting put down in favor of the ones I need to finish.

7638 I've been loving that song, and have listened to some of her other songs. She is crazy talented. Born in November 1996, and there is a Wikipedia entry that speaks of her "early life". Really?!? She's not quite 17. She IS in her early life!

7638 I started reading my Bookmarks magazine and then found Super Sad True Love Story by Gary Shteyngart available at the library, so that's in my pile of currently reading now.

I'm also reading The Light Between Oceans by M.L. Stedman which is a lot more chick-lit than I expected.

7638 Awesome! That's one to look forward to for sure.

That sounds awesome!!! Adding to TBR...

7638 @Alison - Me too! I really hope that the fact that it's listed as Cormoran Strike #1 means there will be many more to come.

I got notice this afternoon that

A Constellation of Vital Phenomena by Anthony Marra was available for checkout online today! :) Happy Dance! I also started The Light Between Oceans by M.L. Stedman

7638 Wow, it's been forever since I posted - my books have been pretty hit or miss lately.

I started Horns, which I found very interesting at first, but the more I read, the more depressing and somewhat demented it became for me. I gave up around 150 pages in. I just didn't want that in my head.

I read The Darkest Powers series - The SummoningThe AwakeningThe Reckoning. I didn't find them amazing, but they were fun, candy books that I enjoyed. I was reminded a bit of Firestarter, with the kids with powers, the people who essentially "created" them and the struggles they had to figure out what their destinies are. This is a YA series, but the book covers I feel are really misleading - by the cover, it looks like there would be a lot more sexual aspect to the books, and there really isn't. The main character is described as a girl who is small for her age, and easily overlooked. The seductive posing of the woman on the fronts of these books isn't at all reflected in the text.

I also read I Capture the Castle - I really thought this was a Bee book at some point, but couldn't seem to find it on our shelves. It took me quite awhile to get into the book, but I did end up enjoying it. I was left a bit dissatisfied with the ending though.

I finished The Cuckoo's Calling - which I really loved and couldn't put down. I don't like the title though...I don't get it, I guess. But the writing and characters were superb. I think Rowling is one of the best authors of characters I've ever read. I could totally envision her characters, even if they only showed up for a few pages in the book. They were all people. I also found her descriptions of Cormoran's amputation, prosthesis and the issues it causes really well researched and explained. My dad is an amputee - and she had the issues down. Really, really well done.

Finally I read Freefall which was highly recommended by a friend, and I tried but I though it was crap. The writing was bad, the dialogue stilted and the story formulaic. I skimmed a lot.
7638 Interesting!!! Thanks for sharing!

7638 @Garlan - Love the Kidd books - it's so fun to love the criminals.

I've been reading Reamde - it alternates between fascinating and way too involved and technical. I think the author actually wants to create this game...it's crazily detailed and thought out. The book is over 1000 pages. At this point I think it needed more editing, but I'll try to reserve judgement for awhile, as I've only read about 16% so far.

7638 OH - I love The West Wing. I miss it.
7638 Thoughts on this Hive Team Challenge for 2014 - I think it would be fun if the list is fairly similar in format to ours now, but the multiple book items would be a team approach and then the teams could divide up 1 book tasks as they wish, with double credit given for both members completing it? Points could be tallied by the number of books read by the team - does this make sense? I'm just kind of brain storming here.

7638 Mental health days are totally necessary and under rated...read the book!
7638 Tanya, I love the Hive, and am willing to help out - I think that the team approach sounds super fun (Tricia - I want YOU!) I think if we teamed up we could have fun getting to know another bee over the course of the year, and in dividing the tasks/books we're avoiding I think that it may offer some insight into why we like and don't like certain books and get more discussions going - even if it is just between a couple folks.

7638 I'm happy to help too - just let me know what you're needing.

7638 I read John Sandford's latest, Silken Prey and loved it. He brings Kidd back for this one, and I loved the subplots!!!

7638 I already did the research. I can't help myself when anything I read is even loosly based on true events.

it is incredibly sad to see where the Zeitoun family ended up, but as I am in a position where I deal with victims of ptsd I'm struck wondering how much the violations Zeitoun suffered changed the trajectory of his life. I thought this was a very good book and was shocked by the insanity thatfollowed
Aug 18, 2013 05:58PM

7638 I'm nearly done with Zeitoun which is fascinating. This is actually non-fiction that reads like fiction, and the story is pulling me along. I admit, I had no concept of what Katrina was like for those who lived through it. The city I lived in had a huge flood and fire in 1997 after a crazy winter, but there wasn't the lawlessness, or DHS/FEMA debacles. This was during Clinton's presidency, and there was a lot more sanity.

@ Alison - I agree, Crazy Rich Asians wasn't fine lit, it was a fun ride.
