7638 I read In Cold Blood and really enjoyed it. I'm not a huge fan of non fiction, but it captivated me. The two movies - infamous and capote were also well done IMO.

7638 Is the cemetery of forgotten books a trilogy or will there be more than 3 books in the series? I like picking up a series when I can get my hands on all of them...

7638 I started The Shadow of the Wind last night. The writing is amazing.

7638 I'm nearly done with Storm Front - I'm not sure if it's me or if this one just isn't quite as compelling. I love John Sandford, but I understand he's made it pretty clear that he'll be retiring soon. I just am having a hard time really caring about this installment.

I started A Son of the Circus and will get back into that one when finished with Storm Front.

I've got
The Shadow of the Wind on my shelf - I'm going to move it up! Thanks!

7638 It is over - for now. They only passed a continuing resolution, which is basically like asking for an extension on your college paper. It's still due. You haven't ACTUALLY done the work. But you get more time. In this case until January 15 before it all happens again.

No, Congress did not stop their paychecks, because there was some rule passed years ago that despite funding issues, Congress continues to get paid. There were many Senators and Congresspeople who donated their salaries during the shutdown, but that's not the same. It was a choice, and their finances were obviously not impacted in the same way as a federal cog. (like me). I'm supposed to get the 2nd half of my paycheck on Tuesday, and then my regular check again Friday. But I have very little hope they will manage much in two months. I mean, Thanksgiving and Christmas - it's not like they will actually be WORKING during these next few months. It's holiday season!

Sorry, I may be bitter...

7638 Hello - I've decided to write an update. :) I'm sure you're all waiting with bated breath!

Dad is doing a TON better now after his retirement. I can't express how delightful it is to have him back to smiling and laughing and teasing my mom. So blessed!

Work has been awful...before the government shutdown things were bad because we're sequestered and have no budgets and our management has forgotten that the opinion of their employees actually matter, and there are SO MANY baby boomers and...yeah. Work was hard. Now it's hard and I'm not getting paid. My function has been deemed essential but the payroll for my agency has not. So, my last paycheck was about 1/2 its normal amount, and now we won't be paid again until this crap ends. I had to call the bank today and ask for a mortgage skip - something we've NEVER done in nearly 10 years of home ownership or the 6 years before that of rent. I went to Texas with my friend to visit her daughter in college, but really struggled with that decision as it felt just irresponsible to go while I wasn't getting paid...but the plane ticket was purchased and non-refundable, so I went, and really enjoyed myself, but it's worse being back now, and I'm just SO MAD at our politicians. I don't understand how they can be so oblivious to what they are doing to our country. It's horribly sad.

7638 I started Still Missing last night. I'm guessing I'll finish it on the plane today...back to cold and rainy fall in nd after a beautiful few days in tx.

7638 I'm about half thru Tabitha king's the book of Reuben, and her writing reminds me of Richard Russo. Very character driven, detailed and realistic. Beautiful.

7638 Congratulations and good luck! You're doing the best (by banker standards) and worst (by sanity standards) course possible. However it's totally worth it. And I'm sure between travel it will fly! So happy got you and for Brian!

7638 Hello - I've recently finished The Shining (The Shining, #1) by Stephen King and Doctor Sleep (The Shining, #2) by Stephen King - I read The Shining in high school and thought it was OK. Adonica read it recently and said I should give it a re-read as a parent. She was totally right. I loved it this time around - but loved Doctor Sleep even more. Doctor Sleep doesn't require a prequel read of The Shining, but I don't see any reason NOT to read these two amazing books.

7638 @alison - I didn't love that book. I really tried, and the writing was great. Maybe too depressing for me?

I'm re-reading The Shining before I start Dr. Sleep. Loving it this time around. Another book I needed more life behind me to appreciate.

7638 I finished Super Sad True Love Story over the weekend and thought it was really good. The multiple voices of the narrators were great - totally distinct, and I don't always think that an author nails it when s/he tries to write in the opposite gender, but it totally worked in this book. The story feels eerily possible, (a world with virtually no communication outside of social media, the US collapsing) especially with the way Congress is going these days.

I am now reading A Constellation of Vital Phenomena, and am not yet finding it as amazing as everyone else seems to.

EXACTLY - except for the part where you REALLY want to know what happens! :)

(Have I ever said that I enjoy Stephen King?)
