7638 I have also finished The Book of Joe (loved it almost as much as This is Where I leave You!) and The Weight of Silence. 3 stars for that one. Interesting and quick, but probably not that memorable ultimately.

7638 I finished The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt - 5 stars, this one was amazing. The story follows Theo from the day he loses his mother at age 12 through his adulthood - his life is filled with sorrow, loss, friendship, addiction and art. I loved it. There was so many beautiful passages, the writing was great, characters lived and the information on the art was very interesting. It wasn't a quick read - I enjoyed it a LOT more than her other book, The Secret History by Donna Tartt .

I have moved to The Book of Joe by Jonathan Tropper - wanted something a bit lighter after finishing a dense book like The Goldfinch.

7638 For any of you Facebook folk...my husband was traveling for work this week and met an artist who (among other things) creates beautiful, custom pens. We are largely artsy folk here, so I wanted to share. His Facebook page is "Unchaotic Arts". Check it out if you're interested.

7638 Every time we go to Fargo I go to b&n and hit the clearance section. I love my kindle and nook, so I do buy a lot of ebooks.

7638 I've been reading quite a bit, but with no internet posting much is a challenge! My non-Bee books in 2014 so far:

We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves - I wasn't expecting this to be quite so intensive in psychological theory, but I thought it was very interesting.

The Alienist - This was really amazing. I loved the writing and the way that the time period was invoked.

Nine Inches: Stories - this was a very morose collection, but the theme throughout was that there are consequences to all actions.

That Old Cape Magic - I'm a huge fan of Richard Russo, and this book didn't disappoint me. Griffin resents his childhood, but he really becomes very much the type of person he despises. There is also a really beautiful theme here that love looks different to different people.

Practice to Deceive - this one was terrible. The writing is awful, the pacing was bad and there was very little cohesion. It seemed that Rule did a lot of research, but just threw together the various gossip/stories she heard any which way. Awful.

We the Animals - The writing was just beautiful, and the story incredibly sad.

Through the Evil Days - This was a very satisfying installment in the series, even if it did feel a bit too much. EVERYTHING that could go wrong did. I want the next book now...

7638 Petra - Wit was made into a movie - I think by HBO - Emma Thompson starred in it. It was really good. It was also performed at my university while I was in grad school - it's a very moving play.

7638 Oh no! Any idea what happened to it?
Feb 09, 2014 07:03AM

7638 Had a trip to b&n yesterday (it's 70 miles away) and found nothing I was interested in!!! Never happened before.

7638 Alison - I read the Giver in college - one of my favorite undergrad classes ever. I still wasn't mature enough for it.

I liked the 90's version of Little Women, but didn't love it. Nothing can compete with the version in my brain.

7638 My mom stole my copy of the Thirteenth Tale, so as I share my kindle account with her I figured it was win win!

Jan 28, 2014 05:59PM

7638 You've never read Little Women?!? Mom gave me that book in 5th grade... Not sure how many times I've read it. Loved little men and Jo's Boys too.
