Thanks for mentioning this. I thought it was good - a bit gruesome to start , but still good. I liked that it was a standalone.

I can't force myself to spend $12 for an ebook, but I've rediscovered the library and if i can't get it there I try audible. Honestly i think hard about mainstream pubbed over $7 and self pubbed over $4

222868 I've finally gotten around to reading Murderbot diaries - i did goof and accidentally skip the second, but it wasn't a huge problem. I liked them and think it is cute that the AI just wants to be left alone to watch his 'shows'

I also just finished The Palace Job which was a decent caper book in a fantasy setting.

222868 I just polished off this KU, it was one of those light over 40 women's pnr series - the heroine levels up in every book, but the odd ball crew she acquires is kind of fun. The series list is below and the shorts actually move things forward so it is better not to skip them. The only issue i have with this is that - and it is quirk from my upbringing - is that in one of the shorts she tries to summon santa and gets the guy with the same letters in his name but the 'n' moved to the end. And he is a side character after that, mostly he just adds a touch of mischief but i hate reading the name.

Thanks for this, there were a few I didn't know about.

For those who read the Annette Marie Guild codex books Hellbound Guilds & Other Misdirections is out recently and a decent spinoff - sounds like it might overlap the upcoming Crystal Druid books

And the latest hollows book is out too Million Dollar Demon

Do you have a windows pc? Or apple? Either way it sounds like you might have gotten thrown into dark mode or a dark theme. Try googling those to get the instructions to Get you back to normal. For windows 10 its this https://in.pcmag.com/migrated-65955-w...
But pick light mode instead . good luck

222868 I just listened to the first murderbot, I thought it was pretty cute and will continue on.

Other books worth mentioning
Fate Interrupted - the final moonstone cove book, i liked the wrap up and the final pairing - I also like that the author does such a great job writing teen children of single moms, you can tell she must have a good relationship with her own son. hope she'll do more of these.

Love Code - i find books with a lead awakening to emotion very appealing, and was on board with the AI getting a bio-body and finding love. I like this better than the first book very aptly named Strange Love.

Life's Too Short and Always Only You which were both good friend to lovers contemporaries.

The Road Trip was disappointing with past and present stories running in alternating threads and a whole cast of mostly unlikable people and dysfunctional relationships

and finally I read the first of the Honey badger books, I am sad to say that I think my days with the author are past - it was fun to see all of the past stars and their supporting cast - but the leading ladies are just so uber violent and out of control at the same time, it's a bit much for me at this point. :( I am more in a cute and cuddly, light and frothly mood these days.

222868 I wasn't really thinking that we were limited to PNR - I noticed that historical romance is probably the most rec'd lately but was wondering what else people were reading.

Mostly though there are folks who we haven't heard from lately and was wondering if they were still out there - I hope so and that we are all doing well despite the weirdness that has been life for the past year.

222868 Out of curiosity - who is still out there? And what genres are you reading now?

I still pop in everyday but haven't been sharing everything I read - only the UF and things that are pnr adjacent or have fantastical elements. I am also reading a fair number of cute light contemporary romances.

222868 I decided to give another Helen Harper series a try since I liked her Brimstone Bound series, her magic city series starts with Shrill Dusk. The first book is a bit of a mess to start - an odd magic apocalypse kicks things off - but I ended up liking the trilogy over all. It's lightweight but KU.

222868 I thought this KU series was kind of fun Hell Gates & Hot Flashes: Paranormal Women's Fiction it has alternating POVs for a 43 year old sheriff who just took a new job and discovers it comes with magic, her 60 something mom and 79 year old grandma - who is still a wild child at heart. The sheriff's love interest is a half demon demon-bounty hunter. All the stories has little mysteries and great titles.

The other book I read and really liked was a new series starter from Erin Kellison who used to write short pnr series in the day, her new one The Stone God has a bit more heft though it does have some quirks in the world building (the world feels more classic fantasy but there's cell phones and cars) there's Gods who seem to be exhiled in the world and almost everyone serves them. The lead has an exemption for service but gets pulled in when a cursed god washes on her doorstep (figuratively).

I don't think you need to read again. And from what you said, you could start with what you liked about the characters (you said you'd consider reading more) then your "nits" with the dialog and then your last bit about being curious about the others characters and willing to read more. (It's like a sandwich:). Just because you get an arc it doesn't mean you have to love the book and as a reader I often read 3* reviews instead of 5* to see if I am going to try something - to see if what bothered the reviewer is something that would bother me. I have only had 2 arcs that i hated - one I left a review for and one that I didn't because the book made me mad and I couldn't come up with anything positive to say.

222868 I thought Unlucky by Miss Fortune author DeLeon was kind of fun. The heroine is really unlucky but has figure out how to make it work for her for the most part and she's very likable. I think this is a standalone
