The Guild Codex: Warped #2

Hellbound Guilds & Other Misdirections

Rate this book
Agent Kit Morris. Has a nice ring, doesn't it?

It's a big step up from "wanted criminal" or "that weird con-artist guy with weirder psychic powers"—both of which recently applied to me. But my promotion to MagiPol agent comes with a few drawbacks.

First, supremely talented and effortlessly gorgeous Agent Lienna Shen won't agree to a dinner date with me. Second, my new assignment has pitted me against a guild with very bad taste in pets. Third, those pets are demons, and those demons want to kill me.

My psychic magic is great for conning people. It doesn't do jack shit against hellish orcs. If I screw this up, my dinner date will be with a demon—and I'll be the dinner. Even better, I kind of suspect this supposedly straightforward assignment is actually the tip of an unholy iceberg of power-hungry malefactors bent on destroying all law and order in the city.

I should probably mention that last part to my boss.

Kit is such a disaster, but he's trying his best, and if that's not relatable, I don't know what is.

Kit has gone from somewhat sketchy law assistant to psychic mage on the run to magical cop assistant to magical detective. What a journey. He's officially madly in love with his co-agent, the gorgeous and grumpy Leanne. Sadly for Kit, Leanne has a bit of a stick up her behind and is still rebuffing his advances despite her obvious physical interest in him.

I find Kit so funny. Despite the fact that most of his movie references fly right over my head, he's all-around witty and has a way of describing situations that's so stupid and yet immediately evocative.

If getting my ass kicked in the cargo hold had been the bottom slice of bread on the cilantro-flavored shit sandwich that was my kidnapping, the unnecessary defibrillation was the soggy top slice.

Striding toward us was the filling of the aforementioned shit sandwich—the goateed electramage, who had both hands outstretched on either side of him. White ropes of electricity leaped from every nearby surface on the ship supplied with electricity—lights, cables, antennae—and into his palms.

Lienna shoved to her feet, her back to the railing, and I scrambled up beside her, preparing for the sequel to our parking garage battle—Maniacal Mage 2: Electric Boogaloo.

Next up in our Guild-Codex-athon, we're back to Tori and her three mages (with whom she STILL has not made out. Tori!! Get it together!!!) in Spellbound #5.

Oh my goodness—I knew I'd be absolutely thrilled to step back into The Guild Codex Universe, and to visit Kit & Lienna again...but it was even better than I could've imagined! It felt like pure perfection—It felt like home :).

So basically, yes, i'd say that this second installment of TGC: Warped series (copenned with Rob Jacobson & the third series, written by Annette Marie, in the CodexVerse) was wildly successful for me! It was hard NOT to laugh, smile, etc. etc. (so to anyone who saw me grinning like a fool at my kindle for, like, the majority of an hour while I was reading at the beach... don't you judge me 😋— you just start reading this series & you'll soon understand, I promise).

Yeah. This was a BLAST. I love Kit & Lienna's dynamic; they just work well so well together in every way!

I do feel like this had just a LITTLE less action than i'm used to, but I think that is just second/middle book syndrome, and I wouldn't go as far as to DIAGNOSE that, just more I was noticing not much progress was made in Kit's overall story... but it was so incredibly fun that... did I care? Not. ONE. Bit. This was like being at a theme park and riding a rollercoaster that ran parallel to the other GC series, and instead of big drops it was more like corkscrew, spiraling, upside-down, FASTTT FUN!!

What a wonderful new romp in the GC Universe! Amazing!!

100% recommend!!! The humor in this series ALONE is even enough to keep me reading! Plus I love when familiar characters I adore make cameos! No spoilers! ;) if you are a Guild Codex fan... you NEED to pick this series up! It is comedy gold with some amazing as hell new protagonists! I look forward to the next installment with baited breathhhhh! 🤍

I like Kit, we have a lot in common; A love of spreadsheets, messing with our coworkers when they aren't looking and an unhealthy memory bank of pop culture references to draw on. I mean we would totally be friends in real life if he wasn't always on the run, facing demons, trying to get a date with a girl who definitely likes him but is dealing with some daddy issues and warping people's minds to see things that aren't really there.

Kit was just a flunky for a law firm that wasn't on the up and up. Now he owes seven years to the magic police and is just trying to figure out this new open to magic side of his life. His partner plays by all the rules...but Kit he has always operated in the grey area and so this law and order thing is taking some getting used to.
“Sometimes, law and order and right and wrong come in second to surviving.”

This time Kit is up against some demons and the guild that summons them. Problem one, the demons don't see his illusions. Problem two, how does he help his partner out so she isn't sent back home to work. And problem three, how does Kit convince Lienna that his isn't anything like the daddy issues she is carrying around? But priorities, demons first and where are they coming from.

This was again a fun story that was pretty fast paced and kept me thoroughly entertained the entire time. Kit is fun to hang out with and I'm a sucker for pop culture references and slow burn romances. But Kit will probably get the girl, well eventually that is.

Reading these books made me want to jump into the other series set in this world full of guilds, magic and witty repartee

This is yet another series I'm reading for all the wrong reasons. I adore the Guild Codex universe Annette Marie has created and fleshed out with all the spin-offs it encompasses but boy do I dislike Kit and the narrator.

I just can't connect with Kit. All his movie/tv show references go right over my head 90% of the time. I find his over-the-top sass strangely offputting (strange for me because I usually love that trait in all the characters I read about). I think this is getting more into I'm the problem territory and there isn't actually anything wrong with the book/story as a whole.

The heroine comes off as smart and secretive but I also can't connect with her either. I love that she saves Kit's *ss so many times and has proven herself to be very capable.

Overall, this story felt like it was just going through the motions. Since I didn't connect with anyone I didn't really enjoy much of what I was getting if that makes any sense? I think I'll give this series one more shot. Deep down I want to like this because it's part of the overall story of the Guild Codex universe. By reading this the events will eventually connect to other works in this universe. I would like to have those AH-HA moments but I won't put myself through so many of these books that I end up hating this series entirely. I'd rather just let it be if it ever comes to that.

The Audio Book:

I really, really, really dislike this narrator. I know for a fact (since I vividly remember the author mentioning this somewhere in her reading group a few years ago) that Annette Marie has sent out pronunciation guides for the key elements of this series to narrators in the past so I find it hard to believe that this guy didn't get one and didn't do his research. He manages to mispronounce the words just enough to get under my skin. I gave him a pass in the first book because I thought it would be corrected by the second book. Turns out I was wrong and I hate it here. Though he sounds just as annoying as I imagine the main character Kit sounds so great job on that front.

Annette Marie's urban fantasy books are always such a good time. Pure fun and entertainment, addicting and fast-paced, with lovable characters and their dynamics. Amazing stories for getting out of a reading slump, success guaranteed.

This series in a Guild Codex Universe, Warped, follows Kit Morris, an ex-con and a new mythic with some very cool psychic abilities, and a new addition to a kind of magical police that oversees all mythics. And let me tell you, Kit is hilarious, constantly full of quips and pop culture quotes and jokes. CONSTANTLY. He's funny, but sometimes to the point of annoyance because there are times jokes should be put aside. Nobody told Kit that 😅

That's not why this series is shaping up to be surely my least favorite. It's the romance 😔 In every other AM's book I went practically feral for the romance subplot, the sort that makes me squeal and giggle and grin. Here, though... There's just hints of romantic scenes between Kit and Lienna (his new coworker) and it feels so damn forced.

They both have a crush on each other, they both know it, but I feel NADA, no tension, nothing. Out of nowhere, there's always a scene when (in a high-stakes situation mostly) they stop and gaze into each other's eyes, Lienna blushes, looks at Kit's lips, they lean into each other...and every time I'm cringing, praying it will STAHP 😩 It's all so painfully perfunctory, just going through the motions for the sake of an unnecessary romance subplot. And it's a damn shame because if Kit and Lienna went from "strangers/coworkers irritated with each other" to "besties for life" I would be happy as a clam and it would feel more natural 😩

...or Kit could've been gay/bi/pan, I could get behind that 😏

I'll still keep coming back to this series because I just miss the whole universe so much, and there are cameos from my beloved characters (Darius King in this one, my god this man, despite being a side character, has me barking 😳).

I'll just grit my teeth and completely ignore any "moments" between Kit and Lienna. They're both pretty cool, just not together, thank you ✋

I will always be grateful for the day that Annette Marie and Rob Jacobsen decided to work on a series together. “Hellbound Guilds & Other Misdirections” goes to show that those two writers are a FUN-tastic duo!

Kit became even more lovable in this installment. He’s always been charming, but my respect for him went up a notch because of the way he supported and protected Lienna. He’s still that mischievous, clever, and smart-ass guy we met in book 1, but the biggest change is that he’s learned to trust and be more open about his feelings for our badass abjuration sorceress heroine. I have read so many Annette Marie books with a heroine as the sole POV that seeing Kit obviously simping Lienna was a refreshing and entertaining change of pace!

I seldom say this, but I don’t mind that this series doesn’t have a Lienna POV. She’s fierce and intelligent and I admire her, but I am actually enjoying getting to know an Annette Marie heroine this way because this is the first Annette Marie novel that doesn’t have a heroine POV. It’s an interesting experience to see Lienna through Kit’s eyes. There are still many things I’d like to know about her and her fascinating abjuration sorcery, but I am fine with waiting. Every time Lienna chose to trust Kit with more details of her life, I saw it as a hard-earned victory for him and a brave move for her.

Lastly, I love friendships and slow-burn romance like Kit and Lienna’s because the foundation of trust and respect is strong and they fight for each other. Annette Marie and Rob Jacobsen made the right call by giving Kit and Lienna a more dangerous mission and more powerful adversaries. Those factors did wonders for Kit and Lienna’s character development and brought their relationship to another level.

Who else agrees with Kit that Chris Evans should play him in a movie adaptation? *raises hand* I sure as hell do!

So good. So so good.

Honestly, at this point I’m not sure if Annette Marie can write a book that disappoints me. I love how she manages to imagine completely different characters, and completely different plot lines that somehow still intertwine, and series that can be read on their own yet still get even better when you KNOW from reading another of her books why some things are the way they are. Like for example that an illegally contacted demon won’t be fooled by “Split Kit” because it sees the body warmth. Or that Darius can sneak up on Kit and Lienna not because they’re inattentive, but because he’s a luminae mage.

I loved seeing Tori again, even if only briefly. And having Robin and her sudden demon-skill mentioned made me want to reread the entire Demonized books, because I miss Zylas.

I won’t spoil the plot from this book, I’ll only gush about how I love Kit’s self deprecating sarcasm, about his crush on Lienna, and the action scenes that had me holding my breath again.

I’m sure I’ll get the audiobook once its released and re-listen to everything once it’s out.

If you’re new to the whole Guild Codex world and you want a really good urban fantasy series that will suck you in - go for it. You can start with either series (Spellbound and Demonized are already finished, this one is ongoing, but without any cliffhangers at the end of each book).

4.5 mind-warping stars!

oh boy I LOVE Kit.
He is witty, charming, has the perfect sense of humor, and I can't have enough of his jokes.

annndddd he is relatable:

Everything was garbage.
I mean, I was still alive, which was less garbagey than the alternative of being un-alive, but everything else was garbage.

Cause same.

I forgot how much I missed Lienna and his chemistry. I swear this two has so much chemistry they could build a chemistry lab or something.

“I’m gonna try something,” I whispered.
Her alarm was instant. “Now isn’t the time for a fake monster or a cute Keanu Reeves reference.”
“Wait, are you saying that Keanu is cute or that a reference to Keanu would be cute?”
“Kit,” she growled.

I couldn’t love these two more. Also, we got so many cameos. And Robin Page! Please I want more! Kit and Lienna the perfect duo is still solving crimes (or *looking* for crimes).
Kit is desperately trying to pass his MPD exams cause apparently you can't get rid of that shit. No matter where you go, magic or mundane exam will follow you.

Anyway, aside from the exam
The ending was perfect. Kit was perfect. Kit and Lienna was perfect. Everything was perfect. The next book isn’t in my hand THAT'S NOT PERFECT.
now if you will excuse me, I'm gonna go and cry while waiting for the next book.

Book 2 of Warped is just as good as book 1. Poor Kit is having a hard time becoming a full fledged agent and Agent Shen is having a load of self-doubt as well. We learn more about them and their pasts and we see more of their abilities exercised in exciting ways. Looking forward to the next one!

Kit is such the antihero and adds some mischievous humor to some dark goings on. His little crush on Lienna, the strait laced grouch, is cute. The story was action packed with frequent life threatening scenarios. Kit and Lienna worked well together but both have a ways to go to build their self confidence and field competence.

Spice: 0/5

Triggers: violence, gore, murder, attempted murder, fire/burn injuries, drowning, sinking ship, selling of souls, police corruption, reference to foster care, sexism (not from MCs), criminal organizations, mind reading, electrical injuries, car crash

Warped is not my favorite spinn off. I think it's because of Kit and Leanne. I can't bond with them. Where Kit was an orphan and had a hard life, Leanne had kind of the opposite but with family issues.
Kit kind of just sneaks around, finds situations and jumps right into it without thinking. Especially annoying when you can't control your magic. I will try harder and hope it will get better....

You cannot help but smile when you get your hands on one of Marie’s audiobooks and I was so excited to learn more about Kit, MagiPol and the Warped series. It seems like we had to wait forever, but in truth it’s been less than a year!

Kit Morris is a thief turned agent after he made a deal. He is getting used to life as one of the good guys. Kit has unique magic, and I was curious to see him in action.

MagiPol or the MDP assigns Kit to partner with Lienna and I loved this pairing. The combination of Kit’s magic and Lienna’s bag of magical artifacts and unique personalities really shone as what appeared to be a straightforward case took them down a rabbit hole filled with danger.

I liked Kit from the start, but felt like we really got to know him in this second audiobook. Kit is smart, and clever at assessing people. His personality and blend of humor which makes him shine. His ability to create illusions in the mind of others it unique and I love watching it in action.

Lienna and Kit have quite the case on their hands and the deeper they dig, the more trouble they unearth. We spend a little time in the Crow and Hammer, get to see some favorite characters and even have one as a suspect.

We’ve got a slow burn romance, but I loved the inner dialogue and look forward to seeing how things develop. Kit isn’t as confident as he appears to others and Lienna has some issues of her own. They play off each other’s strengths and boost each other’s confidence, making them the perfect duo.

As always, the case is solid with plenty of suspense, dead ends, shocking discoveries and seat of your pants action that keeps you listening into the wee hours. You won’t want to miss Kit & Lienna as they investigate guilds full of Demons and their contractors!

Iggy Toma is the narrator of the Warped series and has done a splendid job of bringing these characters to life and grasping the tone of this world and author’s writing. He truly has become the voice of Kit.

If you haven’t dived into the Warped world yet, I recommend you walk, not run your fingers to the audio store and grab them. For users of Kindle Unlimited, the series are in KU and the audios are available at a reduced price when you borrow or buy the ebook. This review was originally posted at Caffeinated Reviewer

Kit is just so annoying it makes this a little insufferable. This follows Annette Marie’s pretty formulaic at this point plot where everything goes wrong for the characters until at the last second things go a little right and then the installment is over. It’s mildly entertaining and I’m honestly only “reading” this series via audiobook because my library has it and I’m kind of interested in the Druid series, but this is series is recommended to read first.

Kit Morris (Agent in training) and Agent Lienna Shen are back and hunting down magical bad guys in Vancouver. This time they're on the trail of illegal Demon Contractors but someone has turned the tables on them and they've gone from being the hunters to the hunted.

Very good Urban Fantasy. Great characters, good story, good fun.

My only problem, and it's not a big thing, is the narration. Particularly what I would consider mispronunciation of words. Things like pronouncing "tier" with a long "i" sound as in "tired". It's only a small thing but there was enough of it that I started to notice it.

The audiobook for Book 3 comes out on Tuesday but I think I might do that one as an eBook.

Despite liking other books by this author set in this same world, I think this series isn't for me. I was so so on the first book. With this one I made it 30% before giving it up and that took me 2 days. I normally read a book like this in one sitting, about 3-4 hours. Kit was a bit better for me this time around, I liked that he wanted to help Lienna, but she was right in that Kit was wrong to sneak into the meeting where she pretty much got her ass handed to her. Even though it seems like Kit has uncovered something big, it can't keep my attention, I kept putting the book down to randomly clean things around the house. So unusual for me, I usually will pick reading to avoid cleaning.

This book is just so much fun! Kit is adorable, his wittiness is off the charts, and these books are just the pick-me-up I needed after a tough couple of months. I LOVED Kit's first book, but this one suffers a tiny bit from middle book/second book syndrome. Even so, it's not worth taking off more than half a star. I am looking forward to reading more books in this series!

Kit is an amazing character! He is funny, his sense of humor is so good and he is such a sweet guy! And he is also a nerd! What's there to hate??
And the book was full of action and never boring. We see mysteries, investigations, fights, and a lot more! And I had a great time with it, even if I had to suspend my disbelief a bit. There are a ton of things, all linked to the MPD that made no sense to me, and I had to try hard to just ignore them and go on with the reading, because some of these things were pretty annoying, even if I can't really say more because it would be a spoiler, and thinking about them would have hindered my reading experience a lot. And it's a bit of a shame, because the book is good but... it is also annoying at the same time.
But I would continue this series all the same because it is fun and it is the right one if you just want to take a break and read something lighthearted and funny as hell!

I think this is my first 3 star review for a Annette Marie book. It honestly has nothing to do with that book but with me. I don’t know why but I have a really hard time connecting with male leads. I LOVE him but I’m having a hard time connecting with him. The action was good and the world building is obviously good but I had a really hard time connecting with the characters. I wish the female lead (I can’t even remember her name right now that’s how unconnected I am) had more of a role in the book. Or maybe I’m just in a funk. IDK I’ll reread it one day and see if my opinion changes. I liked it but I didn’t love it and I’m shocked because I’m a huge Annette Marie Stan.

3.5 Stars, rounded up.

My Honey and I both enjoyed this much more than the last! Not sure why exactly - were we just more comfortable with the characters? Was the writing significantly better? Or was the narrator better (bc we know how they can make or break a book)...
Anyway, we're still rolling our eyes at the typical ticks in this series, but I'm finding Kit MUCH MORE lovable. He's an absolute scamp: immature, sensitive, fun loving. He vividly reminds me of Shawn from Psych.

"Hell Bound Guilds & Other Misdirections" is the second book in The Guild Codex: Warped Series, but it's the twelvth book released in the Codex library. You don't have to read the other series to enjoy Kit and Lienna's story, but to get the entire scope of the intricate tale that is being woven here, I highly recommend!

Captain Blythe at the MPD is giving Lienna an ultimatum: bust The Grand Grimoire and dissolve their guild, or get sent back to LA. Kit won't - can't - lose his partner though. So, he uses all his skills as an MPD Analyst to dig up dirt on the resident demon summoning guild. What follows is a hilarious and heart-stopping narrative that will have you cheering for these two heroes.

I adore Kit. He's funny, capable (even though he experiences moments of self doubt like the rest of us mere humans) and sexy. His vulnerability when it comes to his partner and how he and Lienna interact is endearing. These two are another couple that are kinda giving off that agent Moulder and Scully vibe. (More on that in a sec.) I loved the struggle with his power. It gave his character more depth. The same can be said for his partner Lienna, except her problems were more personal in nature.

My only tiny problem with this book, and I dont even consider it a *real* problem, was it went by too quickly. Adding to that illusion was the book ended at about 87%, and the short "A Little Warped" that was published at the end of another book was added in. It works chronologically, and makes sense to put it there in case other readers did not read the Spellbound Series. With that being said, I'll be reading the entire three series again soon, so I'm happy its there. Also, I'm a spoiled brat that wants enjoyable books to last forever.

I'm looking forward to seeing how the Crystal Druid comes into play, and to see the MPD portion of how the other's (Spellbound and Demonized) finales come to light.

Oh, and did I forget to mention character crossovers in this one? "Can I join this guild?" 😆 I'm sure I've said somewhere that I completely fangirl over these.

As for the romance/🌶: If you're looking for straight up romance, you should know that this isn't your book. It is a slow-build/slow-burn story, and that means we won't see a culmination of all the nail-biting, yet short-lived, sexy time until the final book. 🤞 Imo, this type of romance is the best. Because THE MAIN STORY ARC comes first, while the relationship builds organically throughout. It's more realistic, and the payoff is worth the wait from my POV.

If fast pace and hilarious Urban Fantasy is your thing, check this series out.

Buddy read with RHR. Yes, something that isn't a re-read. Reading these in order it's nice to take a Tori break. After the revelation at the end of the first book, I kind of expected more experimentation/focus on that aspect. But, continuing the demon theme, Kit and Shen have new problems. The best bits were the real spider and them visiting Darius. I can't decide if Kit is more likeable than Tori or not. It will be interesting where this one goes.

I’m really glad I listened to the first book. The narrator really set the tone for Kit’s sarcastic character. If you do not know that, this book would totally read differently.
