From No. 1 to No. 60, Readers' Top Books Published in the Past Five Years

Posted by Cybil on September 25, 2024

Spend enough time on this planet and random questions will gradually surface in the brain. Who invented the window? Why are oranges orange? And what are the 60 most popular books on Goodreads over the past five years?

We’re here to tackle that last question with today’s collection of the 60 top books published in the last half-decade, according to Goodreads members. This particular list is strictly by the numbers. We counted up the number of times Goodreads members marked these books as Want to Read, Currently Reading, or already Read. Then we looked at the average ratings on each title, with all of these books earning at least a 3.5-average star rating from fellow readers.

The books are sequenced according to overall popularity, without regard to genre or categorization. As such, for now, Alex Michaelides’ 2019 psychological thriller The Silent Patient is the most popular book overall. It seems that Goodreads regulars are also enjoying mysteries, romance, and the relatively new hybrid designation known as romantasy.

Authorwise, you’ll notice the usual suspects list of Goodreads fan favorites here—perennially popular writers including Sarah J. Maas, Taylor Jenkins Reid, Kristin Hannah, and Emily Henry. But the discerning reader will find all manner of things to catch the eye. Hockey lust, say, or Dickensian updates, or octopi.

Click on the book cover images for more information about each title. If you spot anything promising, use the Want to Read button to add the book to your digital shelf.

Db2567 54 read .
It's a great list , there's a couple of books here I might read too.

message 2: by Sasa (new)

Sasa 20 for now. A lot of them on the neverending want to read list...

message 3: by Teddi (new)

Teddi I've read 3 of them. I don't tend to read trendy books 😊

message 4: by Elle (new)

Elle I`ve read 11 books and a lot of them are on the want to read list! :)

message 5: by Kendrah (new)

Kendrah Puig Well some of these books are actually great however in the other hand some of this books are in my never say never list, cause I'm at this point just evading them.

message 6: by Idamus (new)

Idamus Well, I dnf'ed 1 and the rest are not on my to be read list...

And in average I only read about 200 books per year.

message 7: by Leggeremale (new)

Leggeremale I feel like in the last 5 years much more interesting books have been published rather than most of this list tbh

message 8: by варежка (new)

варежка Leggeremale wrote: "I feel like in the last 5 years much more interesting books have been published rather than most of this list tbh"

Honestly, i fully agree, it's just their audience is either very small, or outside of goofreads' user interface((

Katharina Idamus wrote: "Well, I dnf'ed 1 and the rest are not on my to be read list...

Only??? That means you read a bit over half a book a day.
So unless you call 20 page pamphlets "book" that's no "only".
Even with Audiobooks, and listending to them at work, I barely have the time to finish more than 2 books a week...
So I ask you:
HOW?

message 10: by Philipp (new)

Philipp I was wondering why much more famous titles weren't included but then I remembered that all of them were published more than 5 years ago.

message 11: by A (new)

A I haven't read a single one of these books. Some of these books are good or decent enough. But some of these choices make me despair for some of your souls. Especially the book, American Dirt.

message 12: by annabelle (new)

annabelle I've only read 4 lol

message 13: by Jennie Skye (new)

Jennie Skye This list isn't that great. I read a few of them but not many. I read close to 300 books this year and can think of so many better books. The ones I did read on here were for my book clubs. I did enjoy american dirt.

Not really..
I feel like Goodread's members would rather feed us the book that are popular elswhere to stay relevant, rather then digging in the thousands (if not more) popular books on here.

My feed is filled with both booktok's favourites (cause most people gets their recs from there) but also with a large portion of less known books and authors.

message 15: by Olga (new)

Olga 20 read and many of the above I am never planning to read, ever

message 16: by Ranash (new)

Ranash Shapira I guess it's a list that's based on popularity since some of the books are amazing and some are just light trash 🤷
Anyway the great books here are great and I really recommend them.

message 17: by Floriane (new)

Floriane 32 read, among which:

- 3 favorite reads : Remarkably Bright Creatures, I am Glad my Mom Die and Crying in H Mart
- 12 books that I enjoyed and would recommend

So I guess I do tend to read goodreads-popular books but a lot of those that I haven't read are on my "no way" list 🤭

message 18: by Alice (new)

Alice I read a fair amount of them, but unfortunately I don't like romance novels and I don't like Colleen Hoover, so I don't think I'll ever read all of them.

message 19: by Paula (new)

Paula Costello I've read 19 but there are 24 I will never pick up, just not my thing.

message 20: by Joana (last edited Sep 25, 2024 01:59AM) (new)

Joana Monteiro these are just booktoks... which aren't known for being the best literature

message 21: by Law (last edited Sep 25, 2024 02:03AM) (new)

Law I've read 13 books on this list and I plan to read many more. Can you recommend me a book to read from this list OTHER than American Dirt? I don't want to read that. Demon Copperhead, Lessons in Chemistry, Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, Remarkably Bright Creatures and The Women are up next for me. Are they any good?

message 22: by alia 🎀 (new)

alia 🎀 I've read only 4 books on this list & i don't know why the lists not piqued my interest at all hm

message 23: by Andre (new)

Andre I read 14 out of 60. I gave at least 4 stars to 4 books. One 3 star, one 1 star, and the remaining received 2 stars. I’m learning to avoid books with high Goodreads ratings. But I have a long way to go. I rated The Women and Demon Copperhead 2 stars. Why did I read The List?

message 24: by Sue (new)

Sue 22

message 25: by Miguel (new)

Miguel Was the goal to make the most basic and mid list of all time? Fourth Wing at number 3 is wild

now I'm curious- what's so bad about American dirt? like honestly I've never even heard of it

message 40: by Law (new)

Law None of This is True also looks intriguing. Is it any good?

message 41: by Rori (new)

Rori Rockman I've read 11 of these. My favorites out of this list were The Unhoneymooners, Never Lie, and The Housemaid.

message 42: by Marie (new)

message 43: by Miyu (new)

Miyu really, midnight library at #2? that's the middest book i've ever read, but to each their own i guess lol

Dahlia Astra wrote: "There's got to be some amazing novels that we never hear about because of marketing and the algorithm, but no, we just occasionally get another list of the same fifty or so books every month."

I agree with you. It's hard to find good books from other countries available in English.

message 46: by Stacey (new)

Stacey Mckeogh A wrote: "I haven't read a single one of these books. Some of these books are good or decent enough. But some of these choices make me despair for some of your souls. Especially the book, American Dirt."

How can you say this when you havent read any of them?

message 47: by Hitesh (new)

Hitesh Dhola Looks like the list is full of lusty romance stories for women, as most users are women in here. Nothing bad in that, but Is there option to filter the books by male readers? I am curious what males are reading.

message 48: by Oksimoronka (new)

Oksimoronka I've read only 7 from this list, but almost all my TBR)
Some of them I even already bought to read)

message 49: by Dreamcatcher (HIATUS) (last edited Sep 25, 2024 04:56AM) (new)

Dreamcatcher (HIATUS) Did some people in the comments not read article? This list is for the most popular books on Goodreads that were published in the last five years. 'course it's not gonna cater to everyone's taste. This isn't a reclist it's just data, and most books here are what got popular as like, general books read by everyone

message 50: by Reagan (new)

Reagan I've read thirty-nine from this list. Five others are on my TBR list.
