Should you “hold in” your abdominals when you dance?
I was sitting in a circle at a dance workshop, and people were sharing their experiences and asking questions that came up during the practice. We talked about rhythm, tension, the role of eyes in confidence, power postures, self-defense moves. I was stretching and listening and truly not being there in my role as a movement teacher, and then a question snapped me out of my student state of mind.
“Do you guys activate your core when you dance? Do you hold it to turn it on?”I didn’t know what...

Your ‘Now’ Moment and Weight Loss That Lasts
I’d walked up the stairs and handed my daughter a glass of water. I guess I was breathing pretty hard, because she told me I didn’t have to run.

A rare picture of me back then (I hid from cameras)
Only I hadn’t run. I’d barely walked.
That was the day I had my ‘now’ moment. That time when I decided enough was enough. I wanted to be there for my kids, and for a long time.
That was the day I made a change. I was tired of the ups and down...

Three ways we avoid making change
Each Monday morning we do a short Facebook Live on our Eat Move Live 52 page. It’s a way for us to keep the conversation between readers and students, and meet new people who are on the path of wellbeing and self-care. If our sharing helps you – great – that’s why we do what we do – we love to see people feel better! To all of you who watch and share those short videos – thank you!
This Monday we talked about three ways we avoid making change – procrastination, denial and disembodiment.

Strawberry basil lemonade
We just moved to higher altitude (5000 ft!) in May and the first few weeks we were so incredibly thirsty! Both of us drank lots of water and still felt like it wasn’t making a dent! A couple more weeks, and we had started to acclimate, but now, with summer, we are getting used to a drier kind of heat, so naturally, we’ve been drinking even more!
A few days ago, I asked in our Better in a week group for people’s favorite refreshing drinks, and today, I thought I would share a lemonade we make...

Peace with Food Online Webinar
The other day I asked this question on my Facebook wall:
“What does peace with food look like to you?”
For me, 8 years ago, this question wasn’t even up for contemplation, my body “felt” broken, I could not trust that food knew what to do once it was “in there”, and any invitation to eat or drink out felt like a mine field. Will it make me fat, give me a headache, how many carbs are there, can I log it, can I work it off tomorrow…?
Like many other women I work with, my days were hijacked by...

Zucchini with tahini
It’s spring, and summer squash is here – in the store, at farmers’ markets and sometimes in our CSA boxes in overwhelming quantities. Zucchini is one kind of summer squash we love – for its tender flesh and delicate flavor! You may have seen many other kind, such as these and you can use any of them in this recipe. And if you happen to find squash blossoms, we got you covered with a recipe for those that is our home’s favorite.
To make this delightful zucchini and tahini dish, you need just 3...

Weight loss coaching wins over dieting every time
Have you stopped to think about the difference between being on a diet and being an active participant in a weight loss coaching process? A conscious skill-based weight loss coaching process, to be precise!
People seldom receive the invitation to pause and think about what diets are. Why are they designed the way they are? And when we start a diet and end a diet – how does that affect us? If you’ve never pondered this – take a moment to answer this for yourself before reading on.

I still love writing about fitness and nutrition, but I've alw Somewhere, there's a landfill or a garage, with boxes of my old stuff that I remember as brilliant, but only because I'll never find them.
I still love writing about fitness and nutrition, but I've always craved writing stories, so I'll just write what I want to read. I'll write the stories that are missing. I'll just see what comes. ...more
