Music Inspiration for Another Shot At Love

I love music, always have. Even before kindergarten, I was certain I’d become a rock star “Like Madonna.” Pretty cute, huh :)   And then in the third grade, I wrote my first murder mystery. Eeekkk, kind of morbid, but it was a robbery gone wrong, and my teacher asked us to use our imaginations…

I won’t ever be a rock star, though my eight-year-old daughter tells me there’s still time. Just the other day she said, “You can, Mom. There was an old lady on X Factor.” HA HA!!! At 31 years old, I guess I’m now consideredwoman with music notes in her hair, vector one of those “old ladies.”

Now, I use music for inspiration. There are a lot of times I prefer to write in silence, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t music in my head. A lot of times, I’m humming to myself, or there are lyrics bouncing around up there. Others, I put my headphones on, turn the music up, and attack my keyboard because the scene in my head is on fire.

Another Shot At Love

When I wrote the opening scene of Another Shot At Love, one song alone came to mind and the music played in my head while I typed. Afterward, I realized I’d written the whole scene without actually listening to the song out loud. I turned it on, put in my ear buds, and listened to Kate Voegele’s “You Can’t Break A Broken Heart” while I reread the words I’d just written.

You Can’t Break A Broken Heart, by Kate Voegele

When I write scenes in my novels, there are often moments when a sudden song will pop into my head and the scene will play out like a movie. Those are magical moments. Music has always been another form of self expression, a way for my emotions to come out and play, even when I’m not in the mood to share my feelings with others.

What about you? Do you use music for inspiration as an artist, whether you create words on paper, paint landscapes on canvas, capture beauty with a camera? Or is music just something you turn to, like an old friend, for comfort and celebration?

A crazy busy weekend…

Vehicle shopping is hell…

Let me just say, I am glad the weekend is over! Vehicle shopping with the spouse was brutal! First, we looked EVERYWHERE for a vehicle for him.  However, amidst all the chaos and stress of vehicle shopping, I did get to spend some time in my favorite city in Nebraska over the weekend, yay!

VictLincolndowntownWe drove  to Lincoln, Nebraska, on Husker game day…holy craziness! Let me just send a shout-out to all the Husker fans out there. Seriously, I’ve never seen a city so hopped up on game day excitement as Lincoln gets. I read somewhere that Huskers are THE BEST sports fans in the nation. Downtown was almost a solid sea of red Husker fans, talking, laughing, walking in and out of the brick buildings; all little shops I could spend hours browsing through.

I decided over the weekend that I must live in Lincoln. Yes, it’s official. downtownNiecey Roy is in love with Lincoln city life. It’s just small enough that it’s perfect for us small town folks, and big enough for me to get my city life fix… I’m telling you, in another life I was probably a New Yorker. I married a small town man, though, who prefers large yards and lots-o-space. Lincoln would be the perfect in-between.

I even (sort of) got the okay from The Hubs! He says if a VA boiler engineer job becomes available in Lincoln, he’ll apply. Now, since the VA Hospital there probably doesn’t have job openings in the engineering department more than once every fifteen years, it’s unlikely we’ll be moving any time soon. ha! But I’m crossing my fingers someone decides to move or retire. If that’s the case, some of my writer friends just might have to share their city with me :)

Hope everyone had a great weekend :)

Niecey interviewed Jade Kerrion, author of Perfection Challenged

Author interview with Jade Kerrion

Today’s author interview features Jade Kerrion who’s here to talk about how she got into writing and her latest novel, Perfection Challenged.

1. Do you recall how your interest in writing originated?

I started writing at the age of thirteen when my school essays were returned to me with a bunch of ÒAÓs scrawled over the top. Teenagers are impressionable. Being much more impressionable than most, and believing that my teachers knew what they were doing, I figured I was destined to be a writer. ItÕs only taken me tens of thousands of hours of work since then to be halfway decent at writing (and IÕm still learning each day), but one has to start somewhere.

2. When did you start taking writing seriously?

In November 2010, my husband challenged me to stop writing for fun and to start writing as a career. National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) 2010 was the trigger. I spent that month writing Perfection Unleashed, my debut novel.

3. How many books have you written?

I released Perfection Unleashed in June 2012. To date, I have published six books; IÕve just released Perfection Challenged, the conclusion of my seven-time award-winning Double Helix series. I have another novel, Eternal Night, a paranormal romance/fantasy set in the future (sounds odd, doesnÕt it?), scheduled for release in 2013.

4. What was your journey to becoming an author like?

Rocky, as most journeys are. For a while, I explored traditional publishing, but then decided I was too much of a control freak to take to traditional publishing. I preferred having creative control over my writing, artistic control over my covers, and process control over my publishing schedules. In the end, self-publishing made the most sense for me. That said, I do have a foot in the door of traditional publishing. McSill Literary Agency represents Portuguese rights for my Double Helix series.

5. Is there anything specifically that helps you write better/inspires you?

I think IÕm past the stage of needing inspiration; writing is more of a compulsion now. In general, I have a compulsive personality; people like me should never get exposed to alcohol, cigarettes, or recreational drugsÑweÕre easy prey. Years ago, computer gaming and writing used to go hand-in-hand for me. My characters from my computer games inspired my writing. Since then, however, my characters have taken on a life of their own and thus, I have been freed to happily obsess about them without needing the occasional computer gaming boost to sustain them.

6. What’s the hardest part of writing for you?

The hardest part is stopping. After multiple rounds of self-editing, several weeks of working with my editor, and several rounds of proofreading, I have to put the manuscript away and say Òdone.Ó I think it is entirely possible to edit forever, but at some point, you have to stop and send the book out into the world.

7. Do you have a specific writing style?

Third person past tense? To be honest, IÕm not sure I know the response to this question. Some people say my style is much like one author or another (which would be an interesting feat, considering IÕve never read some of those authors.) Broadly, IÕd say that my style tends to resemble serials or movies. I grew up writing fan fiction, and got accustomed to writing sections of chapters that almost inevitably ended on a cliffhanger just because thatÕs the way fan fiction is usually consumed on online fan forums. In addition, I write the movie I see in my head, and not surprisingly, people have commented that reading my books is like watching a movie.

8. Who is your favorite author?

Neil Gaiman is pure genius in his storytelling ability. IÕm a huge fan of his Sandman series.

9. What are your favorite books and what genres do you prefer?

Science fiction and fantasy are my favorite genres to read and write. IÕve especially enjoyed the Belgariad and Mallorean series by David Eddings. To unwind, I settle down with a sweet and satisfying romance, preferably Nora Roberts. I also enjoy thrillers, especially some of Robert LudlumÕs novels.

10. What is some good advice/tips for young writers/aspiring unpublished authors?

Success in any new career takes time. Be patient. Invest in yourselfÑunderstand your strengths and weaknesses as a writer and be committed to continual learning and constant growth. It is said that it takes 10,000 hours of work to become an expert in a field. ThatÕs approximately 5 years of full time 8-to-5 work, and you need to be prepared to make the investment of your time and resources for the long haul.

11. Advice for getting rid of writer’s block?

I think writerÕs block is just an excuse. Writing is a discipline, like going to school or work each day, like exercising and eating healthy. ItÕs just something to have to do because itÕs an expectation for achieving your career goals as a writer. Maybe that particular scene isnÕt working out the way you want, well, work on another, but work on something. Thomas Edison said it best, ÒGenius is one percent inspiration, ninety-nine percent perspiration.Ó Today, you may not have the 1%, but you sure can muster up the 99% because that is under your control.

12. A favorite quote of yours you’d like to share?

Neil GaimanÕs character, Death, from the Sandman series, utters my favorite quote, ÒIt always ends. ThatÕs what gives it value.Ó That quote reminds me that what makes any experience, even life as a whole, valuable, is the fact that it ends. Because it ends, every moment is that much more precious and beautiful. Savor it.

13. What would you be if you didn’t become an author?

Well, IÕm already several things. In addition to author, wife, and mother, I work full time in an education company in the area of business and learning strategy. I enjoy my job very much and donÕt have any intention of quitting. People often ask how I find time to do everything I do. My response is always the same, ÒYouÕll always manage to find time for the things that matter. Oh, and I donÕt sleep much.Ó

14. Can you share some info about your current work with us?

Danyael SabreÕs hard-won normal life shattered the day Zara Itani freed the genetically engineered perfect human being, Galahad, from his laboratory prison. Three years have since passed. Danyael has survived months of brutal torture and the grind of quiet despite without losing the core of compassion that makes him the most compelling and infuriating man Zara has ever known.

DanyaelÕs greatest challenge, nevertheless, lies ahead of him. In Perfection Challenged, Danyael is forced to confront his own mortality and GalahadÕs hate. At the end of his road, will he remain true to his convictions or sacrifice all to protect the woman he loves from the man who hates him?

15. Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

Only that IÕm thrilled youÕve enjoyed my novels. To every one of you, thank you for sharing this journey with me. Your enthusiasm, support, and love for my characters are the reasons I keep writing. I hope you keep hanging around. The best is yet to come.

ÒThe best of the four booksÉthe perfect ending to an amazing series.Ó

Perfection Challenged, the thrilling conclusion to the multiple award-winning, bestselling DOUBLE HELIX series, is finally here. Grab your copy today.

If you’ve never picked up the DOUBLE HELIX series, keep reading for a special offer on the six-time award-winning novel, Perfection Unleashed.

perfection-challenged-600x800PERFECTION CHALLENGED

An alpha empath, Danyael Sabre has survived abominations and super soldiers, terrorists and assassins, but he cannot survive his failing body. He wants only to live out his final days in peace, but life and the woman he loves, the assassin Zara Itani, have other plans for him.

Galahad, the perfect human being created by Pioneer Labs, is branded an international threat, and Danyael is appointed his jury, judge, and executioner. Danyael alone believes that Galahad can be the salvation that the world needs, but is the empath blinded by the fact that Galahad shares his genes, and the hope that there is something of him in Galahad?

In a desperate race against time and his own dying body, Danyael struggles to find fragments of good in the perfect human being, and comes to the wrenching realization that his greatest battle will be a battle for the heart of the man who hates him.

Genre:  New Adult Contemporary Romantic Comedy
Expected Publication Date- November 2013

Imogen Gorecki has a problem—her twin sister just got engaged, and guess who’s the best man? That’s right, her scum-of-an-ex-boyfriend whom she caught cheating with a bottle-blonde, with fake breasts and a stripper’s flexibility. There’s a disturbing possibility her eyes will never recover.

Gen needs a date for the engagement party, but finding Mr. Perfect in a time crunch is proving impossible. Just when she’s about to give up, she face-plants into the crotch of the sexiest guy she’s ever met.

Matt Sesnick is everything Gen wants in a man —except he’s not interested in a relationship. Can she convince Matt to take another shot at love, or will Gen’s pregnant, hormonal older sister, her bridezilla twin, and all of her past Mr. Wrongs get in the way of their happily-ever-after?

About the Author-

Niecey Roy knew she wanted to be a writer from a very young age, but her moment of enlightenment came after watching the movie You’ve Got Mail. It was then she realized her place in life, and happily parked her butt on writing romance. Her dream was to create sexy vixens, hunky, half-naked heroes, and above all, romance; lots and lots of butterflies in the belly, breathless first kisses and happily-ever-afters.

When she’s not at her day job where she works as a legal assistant, she can be found at home at a cluttered desk, pounding her tired little fingers away on a keyboard with nothing but black pepper flavored sunflower seeds and Visine as her weapons for mass-romance-novel-creation. When her fingers need a break, you’ll find her at a table with friends, drinking a few martinis and showing off a new pair of (sometimes ridiculous) high heels. She’s usually the loudest at the table and most often the one snorting with laughter.

Niecey is the author of Fender Bender Blues, a contemporary romantic comedy published by The Wild Rose Press. Her new novel to be released November 2013, Another Shot At Love, is the first novel in the What’s Love??? series.

The Wonder of a Used Bookstore…

Lost and Found…

Pile of booksA couple of days ago, I went to a used book store to write. I’ve been there before, but it’s been a very long time since my last visit. I knew exactly what I’d be walking into, but I have to admit, every time I do walk into that bookstore, I get a little sad. Okay, a lot sad. Even though a used book store (or any book store) is like a bookworm’s heroin, I am equally torn between excitement and sorrow.

There are so many books! Shelves upon shelves that line the walls, stacked inside and above bookcases, laying in piles on tables, stuffed into corners. It’s a bookworm’s heaven, and an author’s nightmare. These books have been traded in and discarded by people who don’t care for them, have outgrown them, or just have no place for them in their homes. But at one time in their life, if only for just one fleeting moment, they had loved (or maybe just liked) that book enough to buy it. There were even books with personal escryptions:

                                      “To Linda, with all of my love.”

I found myself wondering what had happened to Linda. Had she not loved the man back? Did Linda pass away and her family donate or sell her books to the bookstore? There is a story there, I was sure of it, could feel it as I held that book. Maybe someone had even written about Linda’s life, and her own story had ended up with the same fate as the book I held in my hand, discarded by a loved one, or stranger. Either way, the idea of it was a little depressing.

I finally made my way back to a table to write, all the while thinking these were words that would end up in a book, and eventually that book would sit, lonely on a shelf in a used book store. Maybe there would would even be a personal inscription from me, or from someone else who purchases it for a loved one. Lost in a sea of other books, waiting for someone to notice it.

I don’t have much time to read anymore, not like I used to before marriage, kids, day job, part time job, and my own writing. If I did have the time, I’d probably spend most of it browsing through books at the used book store, for every one of those books deserve a good home, and eager hands to page through their wonders.

After I finished writing, I spent a little more time browsing the shelves, my eyes so wide. I had no clue how I’d find an author amidst what seemed at first chaos. How could my eyes ever stop to focus on one book? All of my favorite authors were there. Not to mention its non-fiction collection on Ancient Egypt, mythology, aliens, art, culture… So much to choose from! And then I realized there were little alcoves and sections marked with hand written signs on colored paper. Some sections looked as if there were no organization to the books on the shelves ,while others were arranged alphabetically.

My heart beat a rapid staccato in my chest as I slowly made my way around the shelves, eager to purchase a book, unsure which title to take home. I have precious little time to read anymore. It had to be the perfect one, something I could immerse myself in and truly enjoy. It felt as if I were at a fancy restaurant, the waiter hovering above me with pen in hand, waiting to take down my order, anything I wanted, no matter the price, but I had to make my decision in five seconds or I could have nothing. Gah!

I ended up leaving without a book at all, because I just couldn’t choose. I’ll go back this week and make sure I have enough time to really  browse the shelves. I will probably have the same experience, a panic over what title to bring home. I won’t leave empty handed, though. I’ll feel guilty if I walk out without something.

Frisky Friday ~~ featuring Death Stretch by Ashantay Peters

Frisky Friday

 Niecey here!!! I don’t know about you, but I love me some Frisky Fridays :) I asked Ashantay Peters to visit and talk about perf5.000x8.000.inddDeath Stretch, her new novel published with The Wild Rose Press. They’re the fab publisher who released my debut novel, Fender Bender Blues. Ashantay, thank you for joining me today!

Ashantay:  My Death Stretch heroine, Katie Sheridan, figured stopping by on Friday the Thirteenth for a visit with Niecey could only make the event better.  She’s elbowing me away from my keyboard now, wanting face time.

Katie:  Okay, here’s how Death Stretch came together.  I overheard Ashantay and her critique partner, Robin Weaver, chatting about Robin’s introductory yoga session.  I thought, hey!  That sounds like my experience!  So I tapped in.  Sweet, huh?  I hope no one taped that phone conversation.  I might have to convince Dirk to erase, um, intervene.

Ashantay:  Ah, yes. Cop Sexy, Detective Dirk Johnson, tall, dark and not at all superstitious.   When will you do something about his butchered haircut?  Or should I fix it for him?

Katie:  Keep your hands off my man.  Besides, I like his chopped hair.  Makes grabbing on more fun when we. . .never mind.

Ashantay:  But didn’t you once say his “arrogance made your teeth hurt?”  And don’t you also call him “Cop A-hole?”

Katie:  True, true.   But, hey, Dirk helped me catch my friend Ginger’s blackmailer and the yoga dude’s murderer.

Ashantay:  Speaking of yoga, how about giving us your take on the practice?

Katie:  Sure. Basically, yoga means sweating with your friends and strangers in a too warm room.  At the end of the session, and if you’re me, you give the hunky instructor CPR, but feel him die under your hands.  Cop Sexy hits the scene and you think, yum, yum.  Then Cop Sexy does a one-eighty to Cop A-hole when his stare makes you wonder if you’ll be enjoying the jail’s accommodations before nightfall.  Sheesh, yoga as a stress reducer?  Not likely.

Ashantay:  So I can’t get you on the yoga mat this morning?

Katie:  No way.  I’m out of here.  But don’t forget to tell everyone about the free Death Stretch download on Amazon.

Ashantay:  Thanks, Katie.  Niecey’s readers, hit Amazon for a free download today or tomorrow.  And if you like what you read, tell your friends and family, please.

Katie:  Thanks, everyone!

Ashantay:  Ha!  I have my keyboard back.  Phew!  Katie is a handful, but Dirk keeps on top of things, so to speak.  Together they turn criminals upside down.  Learn more by reading on.

 ~~ Death Stretch excerpt ~~

 ~~~    I watched him inhale, like he held in a rant. Shame on me, but pissing off the man held a certain appeal.
He inhaled through his nose, his gaze lifted for divine inspiration, or perhaps patience. “Break-ins are common these days, so maybe you should use the lock.”
“How do you know I don’t?”
“The lock didn’t tumble before you opened your door.”
“Oh.” It’s hard to be sarcastic to a guy whose job is to “protect and serve.” Speaking of serve, those lips could offer… no, I wouldn’t go there.
“So, Detective Johnson, what does bring you by?”
“I have a few more questions. Mind if I come in?”
My brain stopped at the word come. Silly, but have I mentioned it’s been awhile since I’ve dated?
He grabbed my arm. “Ms. Sheridan? Katie?”
The sizzle of his touch jolted me back to life. “Um, sure. Sorry, I haven’t cleaned yet today.” Or last week, but who’s keeping count? And why apologize?
I closed the woman’s magazine I’d left open to an article on Giving Good Head and shoved it under a pile of papers, hoping Detective Johnson hadn’t noticed my reading preference. His smirk suggested he probably had.
My attention shifted into hostess mode. I might be a slut wanna-be, but my Mama raised me right.
“Something to drink? I have iced tea, bottled water, Pepsi.” I stopped before adding “wine and beer.”
The smirk disappeared and his jaw tightened. “All I want are answers.”  ~~~
Niecey Roy’s NA Romantic Comedy / Humorous Contemporary Romance Cover Reveal
The first book in my What’s Love??? series…
I am SO EXCITED, I can’t shut up about it! Girls Heart Books Tours has agreed to arrange the cover reveal for my super secret new novel, ASAL (that’s what we’re calling it) with an expected publication November, 2013. Gah, I hate when people say the month, but no date. Sorry I have to do this to you guys :)
If you are a blogger, consider hosting my cover reveal on your blog. Pretty please, with cherries on top (two cherries, because I’m not stingy). And if you’re a bookworm but you don’t have a blog, consider joining my Street Team to help shout out the cover reveal on your Facebook pages, twitter feeds, Tumblr, Google+…whatever social media network your desire.
Join my Street Team by clicking HERE.
All three days of the Cover Reveal, I’ll be posting on my bloggy-woggy, too. Including excerpts from various parts of the book. Teaser much???
lips
You know you love me…Smooches!
A little bit about ASAL (super top secret release, lol!!!)
I had a hard time categorizing my baby. You see, it’s full of adult content (yes, smexy, steamy, tear your clothes off adult content), but the heroine is young, only 23. A year out of college and she’s definitely not enjoying her dream career. She experiences a few relationship firsts, and she’s definitely not as confident as a woman ten years older would be. She’s 23. You’ve either been there and know what I’m talking about, or you are there and know what I’m talking about.
But this is nowhere near the angsty, dramatic, make you want to tear your hair out, punch something, make you cry, emotionally draining novels you might be used to seeing in contemporary NA lately. You will find no aborted pregnancies, rape, abuse, drug addiction, etc., in my novels. This is pure romance, make you sigh romance, laugh out loud romance. This, my Cupcakes, is a ROMANTIC COMEDY, a HUMOROUS CONTEMPORARY ROMANCE. When you’re reading it, I want to know you’re smiling. And when you finish it, I want to know you’re STILL smiling.
If you’re looking for a break and a feel-good romance about young, flirty, fun characters and laugh-out-loud moments, you will want to join the cover reveal tour so you can join the fun (and Rafflecopter) and add ASAL (super top secret title) to your TBR pile :)
Author Spotlight ~ P.M. Terrell author of Black Swamp Mysteries
Black Swamp Mysteries Tour
Review of Vicki’s Key, a Black Swamp Mysteries Novel, by P.M. Terrell
My thoughts:
I absolutely hate spoilers, which is why I won’t post any here. That said, P.M. Terrell is an amazing writer. The first page pulled me — it was so vivid! It’s not often that an author can do that; make you feel what the character is feeling, what the character is seeing. This book took me by surprise. Not because I wasn’t expected it to be good, but because I couldn’t put it down. It was a refreshing break from what I’ve been reading and had me deeply enthralled throughout. You won’t want to miss this one. I’m eager to read the rest of the Black Swamp Mysteries. I easily give this book…
