Nothing Like A Bit Of Naked Truth…
Calisa Rhose has nominated me, ME, for the R.E.A.L.I.T.Y Blog Award. I am so giddy and beside myself. Yay me!!!
Calisa has been like a princess in a glittery tutu for me, showing me the way on this exciting yet often scary little trail of published author-dom. I shoot her a message and there she is, all glittery and full of advice. And she’s been an amazing support ever since I joined The Wild Rose Press as an author… I wish I could meet her in person and hug her (maybe some of that glitter would rub off on me!) Calisa Rhose is the author of Home, a romance where an unlikely love is formed between a gypsy and a Vietnam war veteran. She is also the author of Risk Factors, where she shows the reader that “Love, like life, is not without risk.” Check out Home and Risk Factors by clicking HERE.
So thank you for nominating me, Calisa. You are the BEST princess in a glittery tutu I have ever met!
The rules of the game is to visit the blog of the person who nominated you, thank them, and acknowledge them on your blog.
Answer the questions below and nominate (up to 20) bloggers whom you feel are awesome and deserving of notice. Visit their blog and let them know.
Cut and paste the award to your wall (with the ‘add media’ button). And link the button with the person’s blog link (the person who nominated you).
And the questions are:
If you could change one thing, what would you change?
I’ll start with what I can and will always change on a daily basis. My undies. My grandma always told me, you got to wear clean underwear. You can’t change much in the world, but you can change your underwear. My aunt reminded me just the other day how my grandma used to say that to us. Ha ha! My grandma was a hoot. She was a tiny little Polish woman, with a massive set of lungs and would sing her face off while frying the best fried chicken I’ll ever eat in my life. Ever. Hands down.
If you could repeat any age, what would that be?
I’ll tell you what age I wouldn’t repeat, and that would be ALL OF HIGH SCHOOL. Sheesh, girls were vicious back then! Regular war zone, I tell you! I think for sure I’d repeat me at 18 years old. I would have left my home town and went straight to the university instead of trying the cheaper route of community college. I would love to have that experience, and to have “gotten out.” Ha!
What is the one thing that scares you?
Mama. Have you seen that her? I implore you to watch this video (never). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WRqS6pBC42w
I didn’t get very far with the video. Mama is one sick, twisted B-I-T-C-H. Yes. It is okay to spell it out that way. It’s almost like not saying the B word at all. Someone told me that once.
But if you want me to be serious for a moment (this is rare, please enjoy) then I will tell you the thought of anything ever happening bad to my kids scares me. I’m one of those moms who really, really freaks out over little things. They are my world.
If you could be someone else for the day, who would it be?
I could never be anyone but me. However, I could be me, but richer so I could actually afford to write. Bwah-haha!!!
And my nominations for the R.E.A.L.I.T.Y Blog Award is:
Donna Sturgeon http://donnasturgeon.wordpress.com/
Robyn Peterman http://robynpeterman.blogspot.com/
LaVerne Clark http://laverneclark.blogspot.com/
Kate Perry http://kateperry.com/category/blog/
Molly Pedersen http://forthelove-molly.blogspot.com/
Thanks for stopping by! Visit my nominees because they rock!

This Girl Is On Fire…literally
“It can’t be that hard…see?” I said and threw in a wad of papers I had started on fire with a Bic lighter. Freezing our butt off in the middle of winter in my husband’s shop (without my husband), my best friend L and her sister M, were all for me making a fire in the wood stove. Hell, I was all for me making a fire! I could barely feel my fingers anymore.
How hard could it be? We had watched him do it a hundred times–throw the wood in, strike a match, watch it burn and enjoy the heat, right? There was even this cool little lever he rigged up to feed the fire with little drops of old engine oil.
“I got this,” I told them. So we prepped. I loaded the barrel with fire wood. L went outside and scoped for tiny little twigs on the ground for kindle. M poured the wine. And we waited.
After two hours of unsuccessfully starting that damn barrel stove, I decided to give in. Call the Hubs. He would roll his eyes. Probably, he’d be completely unimpressed and very nervous we were out there in his shop. But we were tired of being cold. Yes, yes, we could have gone inside and been warm with forced gas heat like normal people would choose to do in low twenties weather. But what fun is that? It felt like such a huge thing to do ourselves. We were going to build a fire, damn it!
So, Hubs tells me it’s very simple. “All you need to do is put a little kindle in there, maybe wad up some old newspaper, and start it on fire. If you need to, hold the lever for about 5 seconds and feed it some oil.”
“Wait,” I said, nervous. Thank God he couldn’t see me. I stared at L and M wide-eyed and they weren’t excited by the panic in my expression. “I’m only supposed to hold the oil lever for like 5 seconds?”
“Yeah. Only 5 seconds.”
Oh God. This is when panic sets in. Because I had held that lever for about 10 seconds, like, 30 times. And our fire was barely going. Was there too much oil??? What was wrong with our fire!!! Could it blow any second???
“Yeah, okay. I’ll make sure to only hold it for 5 seconds.” And then I hung up. Because I was worried. And now, L and M were worried. Our solution was to drink more wine. We brainstormed our options. There really weren’t many. Our fire was barely going. The tiny little flames were concerning to all. And then there was the oil…
Option 1: Freeze until Hubs got home to get the fire going
Option 2: Freeze until Hubs got home, but try to get the fire going ourselves.
Option 3: Give up and go inside.
We had already had a bottle of wine at this point so we felt pretty brave and confident we could get that fire going.
An hour later, Hubs showed up. Our fire was still tiny. The shop was freezing. We were a bit discouraged, especially after he sat in front of the barrel for all of two minutes, did a few adjustments on the flute and, ta-da! A fire.
What??? I had no clue there was this little thingy inside the pipe meant to open and regulate air flow! Okay, that is a lie. He told me to open it. Even told me how when I called him on the phone earlier. Apparently, whatever I had done to the little lever thingy wasn’t right because it hadn’t opened. Whatever.
By this time, I was so excited to have heat in that shop, that I draped my new jacket over the back of my chair so I could enjoy the warmth without a humongous parka. Because there was HEAT in that shop. Probably, I was celebrating too much. With my back to the barrel, my excitement bubbling over and a glass of wine to my lips, I sniffed, crinkled my nose, and realized there was some sort of weird smell…
I jumped up, grabbed my coat… But it was too late. The material on my coat was singed. Ruined forever.
And that was how I started my coat on fire. Oh! Here is a picture of a successful campfire my friend L and I made ourselves just this summer! Apparently, we’re much better out in the wide open We are so proud of this picture…

Spicy Chicken and Rice
One of my favorite dishes my mom makes for us kids is what she calls Spicy Chicken. For as long as I can remember, she’s been making us this delicious, spicy chicken and rice dish. The scent that fills the house is unbelievably knee-buckling!
As I’ve shared before, my mom makes everything from scratch when she cooks Asian food. She starts out with a whole chicken to make this dish, but cutting apart a chicken isn’t my favorite thing to do, ha! I make shortcuts and I’m good with it. Here’s my version using bone-in chicken breasts, which is the perfect amount of meat for my much smaller family.
See the note at the end of the post if you have questions about where to get the ingredients.

Fried Chili Paste
Ingredients:

Chili Garlic Sauce
2 bone-in, skin on chicken breasts
½ large onion, sliced into medium to thin strips
5 garlic cloves, diced (small)
2 garlic cloves whole
2 large bay leaves
2 cans chicken broth
2 cups water

bamboo shoots in chili oil
1 large bunch cilantro
2 spoonfuls Chili Garlic Sauce
½ teaspoon fried chili paste

Lid of bamboo shoots
1 jar bamboo shoots in chili oil (If you are not a fan of bamboo shoots, leave out and increase onion to one large sliced onion instead of half a large onion. You can also toss in FRESH bean sprouts towards the end to add flavor and texture!)
Serve over steamed, white rice
In a large stock pot, put your whole chicken breasts, bone side down, 2 cans of chicken broth, 2 cups of water, 2 whole garlic cloves, and 2 bay leaves, cover and bring to a boil. Let simmer for at least 40 minutes or until no longer pink inside.

Boiling chicken
Remove cooked chicken. Remove the skin and discard. Pull from bone and shred chicken. Discard bone. Set chicken aside. Discard the bay leaves and the garlic from the broth. Pour the chicken broth into a heat proof bowl and save, leaving just enough broth in the pot to cover the bottom of the pot, about a half a cup of broth.

After adding broth and shredded chicken
Leave the pot on medium heat. To the broth in the pot, add the onion slices and garlic. Pour about a teaspoon of the oil from the bamboo shoots into the pot. Cook for about five minutes. Add the shredded chicken breast. While the chicken breast is cooking, pour the bamboo shoots into a strainer and rinse off the chili oil. Set aside.

After adding bamboo shoots
Pour in the reserved broth, just enough to cover the chicken. Let cook for ten minutes. Add the 2 spoonfuls of Chili Garlic Sauce. Cook for another five minutes. Add the ½ teaspoon of fried chili paste and immediately add the rinsed bamboo shoots. Let cook for five minutes on medium to high heat.
While the chicken and bamboo shoots are cooking, clean the cilantro. Cut off the ends. Reduce heat to low and add the cilantro to the pot. Stir. It will only take a minute for the cilantro to wilt. Remove from heat.

Add cilantro to chicken
Serve over rice and enjoy! It’s spicy, so if you prefer mild heat, adjust accordingly. Add just a tiny bit of fried chili paste, let cook a couple of minutes, then taste again to decide if you want more heat. Drink with Coke or Pepsi, trust me!
Some of you may have questions about where you can get the ingredients. The Chili Garlic Paste can be bought in MOST grocery stores in the Asian aisle.
The Bamboo Shoots in Chili Oil and the Fried Chili Paste I have to buy from an Asian store in town. I live in a smaller city with, so our grocery stores do not sell a lot of Asian products. If you live in a larger city, these items might be in your grocery store. If not, save the pictures of the jars and go to an Asian store in your city. You will be able to find these products, and if not the same brand, any brand as long as it’s the same ingredients it will work (i.e. bamboo shoots in chili oil).
Shoot me a message if you have any questions

Valentine’s Day – the Most Romantic Day of the Year, right??
Hi all!!! I have author Rachel Brimble here today talking V-Day. Welcome, Rachel!
Valentine’s Day – the Most Romantic Day of the Year, right??
What does Valentine’s Day mean to you? Is it red roses, chocolates and hearts all the way? Do you get mad if there isn’t a card gleaming on your doormat first thing in the morning? Want to shove your partner’s head down the toilet if he doesn’t come home bearing an armful of flowers and declaring undying love?
I’m of the mind Valentine’s Day is for teenagers or the people who haven’t dated long and are spending their first Valentine’s together. First love, first discovery or maybe even re-discovery with a new partner—Valentine’s is a fabulous way to show how you’re feeling and make that person feel special.
I’m not so sure it’s for those of us who’ve been married for 15 years plus!
Or do you disagree?
As I’m a romance writer, you’d be forgiven if you assumed I adore this day and shout its importance from the rooftops, encouraging every man in the country to treat his lady like a queen. I don’t. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t dislike it, but romance to me is in so much more than flowers and chocolate on this one day.
My husband is a romantic – he’ll buy me flowers today. He’ll buy me a card. But more importantly, he’s done a million little things that meant so much more to me during the last 365 days.
Better? He’ll not even realize they were romantic – which I LOVE and makes me still LOVE him every day––twenty years after the night we first kissed.
He’ll think nothing that he absently rubs my feet every single night while we sit and watch TV together.
He’ll think nothing that he takes care of buying the groceries for our dinner four nights out of seven, comes home after working all day and cooks the four of us a meal I wouldn’t have a chance in hell of creating, LOL!
He’ll think nothing of the fact he makes me still belly laugh more than anyone else I know.
And he’ll have no idea how it makes me feel that he still sneaks a peek when I’m undressing…
This is romance to me – this is what love and desire is about. It’s not a single day in a hundreds of others that proves a man’s love. I hope I manage to capture those ‘little things’ that a man can do for a woman in my novels––because whether he realizes it or not there’s an element of my Mr. B in every hero I write…
Thanks again, Rachel! What a fun post! Everyone, Rachel’s latest romantic suspense release, “Finding Justice” is available now from Harlequin Superromance.

The attraction flares between them, and getting involved with a suspect is a huge risk. But the more time Cat spends with Jay, the stronger the tug on her heart. Her next Victorian romance, “The Seduction of Emily” (E-Kensington) is available for pre-order:
Seduction is a wicked game, and no one plays it better than the devilish Will Samson in Rachel Brimble’s captivating new novel. . .
Since girlhood, Emily Darson has accepted that she will marry Nicholas, the son of her father’s trusted business partner. The marriage contract safeguards her family legacy, Emily’s fortune, and everything she values–except her independence. Only when a sinfully handsome scoundrel enters her life does Emily realize quite how much a loveless match will cost her.
Will Samson has advanced from expert pickpocket to confidence trickster of the highest caliber. Now he has come to Bath to exact vengeance on the man who destroyed his mother–the man Emily will soon marry. But from his first glimpse of the enemy’s bewitching, spirited fiancée, Will’s plan changes.
Amid the ballrooms and salons of elegant society, heated glances explode into scandalous kisses. Revenge is sweet, but surrender will be irresistible. . .

Rachel lives with her husband and two young daughters in a small town near Bath in the UK. After having several novels published by small US presses, she secured agent representation in 2011. In 2012, she sold two books to Harlequin Superromance. She also writes Victorian romance for Kensington–her debut was released in April 2013.
Rachel is a member of the Romantic Novelists Association and Romance Writers of America. When she isn’t writing, you’ll find Rachel with her head in a book or walking the beautiful English countryside with her family and beloved black Lab, Max. Her dream place to live is Bourton-on-the-Water in South West England…although she hopes a dream visit to Canada might just change her mind!
She likes nothing more than connecting and chatting with her readers and fellow romance writers. Rachel would love to hear from you!

A Dateless Valentine’s Day
Enter the eBook giveaway below for Fender Bender Blues, a laugh out loud contemporary romance!
When I was younger—19 years old, to be exact—I had a boyfriend who was a real… JERK. Ha! I’m sure we’ve all had one of those…and if not, I’m jealous! We were both young and wild and crazy, and much too immature to be dating.
Anyway, it was Valentine’s Day and he was nowhere to be found. In fact, I’m pretty sure he had some lame reason, like he needed to work on his pickup or comfort a buddy. Which translated into drinking beer and being a jerk. So I was dateless.
A new friend of mine called me up and said, “Let’s do something.” She was having boy trouble, too. In fact, she was so in love with this other JERK, one of those lead-a-girl-on kind of guys, who had ripped out her heart and stomped all over it. So you can imagine our feelings toward the opposite sex—they were the scum of the world. Not worth our tears or our heartache. Well, for me, there wasn’t any heartache involved anymore at that time, just severe annoyance and a need to vent.
So we became each other’s dates. She insisted we drive to the “city” (we’re from a small, small, small Nebraska town where the population sign boasted 200, but I knew for a fact there couldn’t be that many people living in town!). She introduced me for the first time to what is now my favorite eat-out meal—prime rib. We laughed, we scored some beer, and we plotted our revenge. And we forgot about our boyfriend troubles for at least…a day. ha!
We had so much fun and it didn’t involve a guy. It’s probably my best Valentine’s Day memory. Maybe because it wasn’t about a guy, but about a friendship that’s now lasted over a decade, and neither one of us can barely remember those guys’ names. I’ll plead m
emory loss for the rest of my life on that one! Bwah-haha!
Thanks for stopping by!

Her life took a wrong turn. He’s driven by success. They didn’t count on crashing into love…
Rachel Bennett loved her job until the day she finds herself doubting her choices. Now she’s hunting for a new career, but starting over isn’t easy. Her plan is simple—no distractions until she finds her dream job. She didn’t plan on fate throwing her a curveball in the form of a fender bender with a sexy guy in an expensive suit.
Craig Larsen is a wealthy, successful business owner with a plan of his own: survive his current PR nightmare and stay away from his overly determined ex-girlfriend. His need for control and personal success is turned upside down when he meets Rach, a sassy redhead who can’t drive.
Soon they find themselves battling with Rach’s grumpy old neighbor, toilet-papering the trees of a high school nemesis, and fighting over the last slice of pizza. Can two very different people plus one fender bender equal a chance at forever?
EXCERPT:
“Now what?”
“Nothing.”Rach sniffed.
Craig shifted to eye her warily. “Since when do you answer me with single words?”
“Since I decided I’m not talking to you,” she answered with a shrug, crumpling up the white paper wrapper from her sub.
Craig leaned his face in close to her neck and enjoyed the startled jerk of her shoulders. Her eyes opened wide in surprise. His breath shifted a few strands of hair at the nape of her neck as he whispered, “Why, because you want me?”
“You’re incorrigible,” she said, breathless, her cheeks flushed.
She’s enjoying this. The thought pleased him. Rach was on her back beside him now, her eyes closed. He glanced around the park to see if anyone was watching. No one was. He could swoop in for a kiss and no one would catch him. No one would care, he told himself. She won’t mind…
“I can feel you staring.”
Craig smiled down at her. “So what.”
She peeked at him with one green eye. “So stop it.”
“And if I don’t?” Maybe she’d tackle him, push him down on the blanket and…
She didn’t. She promptly closed her eye and went back to pretending indifference. “I’ll hit you, that’s what.”
“Not if I do this, you won’t.”
He’d only meant it to be a short kiss, but the pleasure of touching his lips to hers kept him there longer. Her tongue was velvet soft and warm against his and the slow mating of their mouths quickened his heartbeat even as he told himself, It’s no big deal, just a kiss.
She nipped his bottom lip and sent heat sliding through his body. The woman could kiss.
She whispered soft against his lips, “Now why don’t you admit that it’s you who wants me.”

~ That One Special Moment ~ author Sandra Dailey
Valentine’s Day is approaching and romance is on our minds. We have expectations of flowers, candy, and a card from the man we love. We have dreams of breakfast in bed and a candle lit dinner. We have memories of our first school dance, our first date, and that first grown-up kiss.
But do you remember that one pivotal moment in your life when you said to yourself, “Oh my God, I’m in love”? It’s not always the most romance moment, but it changes your life forever. For me that moment came almost thirty years ago.
As some of my family and friends know, I married for convenience. My husband and I each had two pre-school aged children and agreed to raise them together. No big deal. We’d both been burned by love and weren’t looking to try it again.
My husband turned out to be a pleasant man to live with. He was kind, generous and even tempered. Best of all, he loved kids. He bonded with my daughter and son immediately and soon adopted them in order to give them his name and the benefit of a complete family. Still, for the first three years, it seemed to be a ‘yours and mine’ type relationship.
When my daughter was six, she was plagued with health issues. She needed a birth defect to her eye corrected to save her sight and her tonsils had abscessed. Both surgeries had to be performed on the same day, due to her heart condition and free bleeding. She was tiny at only 32 pounds.
My husband was a farmer and worked seven days a week. It was a lonely, frightening time for me. I sat in the waiting room for four hours that day, thinking about everything that could go wrong.
An hour later she was wheeled out of the recovery room and my husband came running down the hall. If he hadn’t been there to hold me up I would have probably hit the floor. Her tiny little face was covered in blood and she was still unconscious. I asked why, and the orderlies said it was normal. After following her to her room, we were left alone.
My husband helped me to a chair, washed his hands, and found a clean towel and washcloth. He leaned over her bed gently washing her face and said, “Daddy’s here. Everything’s going to be alright.”
I realized at that moment that I’d never loved anyone more. I still love him that much today.
In TWICE THE TROUBLE I tell about the ups and downs of falling in love with the added complication of children. Here’s the blurb to explain:
Twice the Trouble
Lacey Carlyle has worked for years to create the perfect blend of home, business and family. Now she risks losing everything when the land she farms is bought by the man who abandoned her thirteen years ago.
Alex has never understood why Lacey walked away from him. Now, he holds the deed to her farm and intends to make her pay. The only problem – two kids weren’t part of the plan.
Jenna and Jerrod may not see eye-to-eye but they are both determined to find happiness for their mom and keep their home safe.
Can Lacey and Alex put their pasts behind them and embrace a future together?

Fender Bender Blues released early exclusively for Amazon digital
I am so excited to announce that Fender Bender Blues, my humorous contemporary romance (I still prefer to say romantic comedy!) is available NOW on Amazon! Please click HERE to purchase Fender Bender Blues.
It has been a rocky road to publication, mostly because when I started writing I assumed that bagging an agent and finding a publisher who would love my book as much as I do would be a piece of freakin’ cake… Didn’t take long for me to realize bagging an agent wasn’t easy! I spent two years submitting to agents before I said to hell with it and sent my book off to publishers directly. It only took 2 weeks before I received my first contract, and then within another week I had an editor from another publishing company email me and tell me they were reviewing my book, too. By the end of the month, I had another contract!
I am so grateful to The Wild Rose Press, and my editor, DJ, for making my dreams come true. I’d still like to find an agent, but for right now, I’m just basking in this amazing glow that is publication! Dreams really do come true!
Here’s the blurb and excerpt for Fender Bender Blues. Hope you enjoy it!

An Imperfect First Novel
I wanted to share something that really connected with me—a post by Jennifer Crusie on her first romance novel, Manhunting.
The reason I love this post so much is because it really, to me, defines the heart and evolution of a writer. That first book is so special. You write it, pour your heart and soul into it, you stress over it, you worry that no one will like it, you worry about what your family might say once they realize you’ve written a sex scene… Okay, so maybe that was me, exactly, but I’m sure a lot of writers worry about those things, too.
What I found most interesting about this post by Jennifer is she admits it’s full of flaws, admits there’s some head hopping, but she still loves it. She still laughs at the scenes that made her laugh when she wrote them. And the flaws she wrote about in that book, I doubt you’d see them in her novels now, but she’s not worried about it, because even after all these years, and many books later, she still loves her first novel, Manhunting.
I had so many drafts of Fender Bender Blues, my debut novel, before I was ready to submit it. And then after submitting it, my editor asked for more revisions before she would offer me a contract! Lucky for me they weren’t major and only took me a couple of days. But at that point I wondered if I’d ever figure out how to finish a novel in one draft with only minor edits and no major rewrites… Is that even possible? I’m sure seasoned writers will tell you “yes.”
It’s important as an aspiring author to try to get your best work out there for a publisher to see, yes. But I think Jennifer makes it clear that after writing the first book, your writing will get better with every single book you write. And don’t stress the flaws of the first book—if you smiled when you wrote it, you’ll probably still smile reading it, years later. I hope this is the case for me with Fender Bender Blues :)
