He Built a $10K/Month Newsletter in 10 Months

Richard PateyRichard PateySerial Entrepreneur $10,000 approx monthly revenue from newsletter
Published March 6, 2023 by Niall Doherty

Richard Patey used to build websites, now he launches newsletters 🚀

Having previously built and sold content sites between 2016 and 2019, including a six-figure exit on Empire Flippers, in 2020 he was looking for a business model that wasn’t so dependent on search traffic from Google.

He was also looking to move on from client work…

I was working with investors, helping them to acquire and operate revenue-generating content websites, but kept running into myself as the bottle neck. I wasn’t scalable, and I’ve never truly enjoyed consulting. Instead of charging ~ $1K/m and working with 5 clients at a time, I could instead charge $49/m and aim to get 100 paying customers.

Richard launched the Website Investing newsletter on Substack (a new platform at the time), and within 10 months he had over 100 people paying a $49/m subscription, “plus a similar level of revenue from advertising/affiliate.”

He then sold the business for six figures 💰

At the end of 2021, Richard launched the Alts Cafe newsletter and Discord community. That caught the interest of Flippa and turned into an acqui-hire.

Richard has since parted ways with Flippa to launch his own network of online business, investing and web3 newsletters at Acquire.GG.

I got a sneak peek at a new product he’s launching soon – The Newsletter Is The Business – and really like this tip he shares there…

Identify niches that you’re personally interested in (so that you enjoy the grind and don’t quit) and then pick one where a lot of money is being spent (the value of subscribers is high). If I can’t identify 5+ legitimate, repeat sponsors in a niche, I won’t enter it, even if the intention is a paid subscription rather than advertising.

Slack App in 90 Minutes Using ChatGPT

Harry writes…

Crazy what a non-developer can hack together with ChatGPT and a Google Sheet in an afternoon 🏗

Reminds me of the functionality another non-developer added to WordPress a few weeks back with the help of ChatGPT.

It’s becoming increasingly easy to create little tools and plugins like these without any coding skills.

Create them for your own business or offer it as a service to others 🧑🏼‍💻

Old-School Banana Marketing Tricks

There’s a great book by Rich Cohen called The Fish That Ate the Whale 📖

It tells the story of Samuel Zemurray, a Russian immigrant who made a fortune selling bananas in the United States 🍌

The name of the book comes from Zemurray pulling off a takeover of the biggest fruit company in the world (United Fruit) in 1933 despite only being a minor shareholder.

Via Wikipedia

In Zemurray’s view, the company could be managed better to handle the economic downturn. Though he sent a letter and attended a board meeting, United Fruit’s management was not interested in his ideas. Zemurray then visited individual United Fruit shareholders and collected their proxies, which would enable him to gain control of the company. He then attended a United Fruit board meeting, in which he produced the proxies, dramatically saying, “You’ve been fucking up this business long enough. I’m going to straighten it out.”

How did United Fruit become the biggest fruit company in the world?

As told in Cohen’s book, it was due to some old-school banana marketing tricks in the early 1900’s…

Beginning around this time, U.F. stationed an agent at South Ferry terminal in New York, where the Ellis Island Ferry landed. Handing a banana to each immigrant who came off the boats, the agent said, “Welcome to America!” This was to associate the banana with the nation, a delicacy of the New World, though none of the bananas were grown in the United States, were in fact as foreign as the men and women coming off the boats. At the same time, U.F. began selling baby food made from bananas, which would hook customers when they were tiny.

You still see this everywhere in business today: products and services associating themselves with well-established people / places / ideas / holidays.

Coca-Cola does it with Christmas. Nike does it with star athletes. Coors Light does it with the Rocky Mountains.

Can you associate your product or service with something or someone well-established and well-liked? 🤔

Super-Simple Sports App Earns $500/Month

ContendoContendoSports Voting App $500 per month
Published March 6, 2023 by Niall Doherty

The app is called Contendo

Contendo allows you to easily collect players of the season votes after every round or via a one-time collection at the end of the season.

Check the 1-minute video here and you’ll see how simple it is 👀

The creator of the app wrote back in September…

Last month was the first time I got to $500/month

mainly focused on two sports – soccer and rugby league (#1 sport in my country) – which both have a culture of 3, 2, 1 voting system used in my app. I emailed the presidents or coaching staff of hundreds of clubs introducing the product.

I could easily see that app earning $5000/month eventually.

Are you a member of any sports or hobby clubs yourself? If so, keep an eye out for app opportunities in those organizations.

Anything that’s currently done with pen or paper, a messy spreadsheet, or lots of back-and-forth emails can be a good candidate for a simple app 💡

They Hacked Facebook And Got Paid $5000

Grzegorz NiedzielaGrzegorz NiedzielaEthical Hacker $19,501 in 1 year from bug bounties
Published March 6, 2023 by Niall Doherty

Grzegorz Niedziela is an ethical hacker.

In a recent video, he shares how much money he made in his first year of finding and reporting security vulnerabilities for companies like Facebook, Google and Stripe…

(This is known as bug bounty, and anyone can try it via sites like HackerOne.)

In total, Grzegorz spent 441 hours and earned $19,501 🤑

That works out to about $44 per hour.

Grzegorz notes at the end of the video…

To be honest, I think I could make more by being employed or by focusing on freelance pentests.

(Pentests = penetration testing)

Likely the highlight of Grzegorz’s year was teaming up with David Schütz in Budapest to hack Facebook…

I didn’t believe that we can find a bug in Facebook in one day. I was still happy to just hack with David, spend time with him and simply learn. But to my surprise, we did find a bug for which Facebook later paid us $5,000.

I was really happy about it, especially that Facebook is just one of these companies that you want to hack at some point of your career.

Obviously you need to have some high-level hacking skills to do something like this, but HackerOne has a free class for web security to get you started.

Another video I found on YouTube…

How I Earned $200 in just 10 minutes #bugbounty #hackerone

First comment on that video…

LOL.. I got $100 for this same Vulnerability after watching your video😁😁😍🤩

Scary vs Dangerous

I heard this on a podcast years ago, from the guy who built Samuel Adams 🍺

He was saying how scary and dangerous are two different things.

Many scary things aren’t dangerous, and many dangerous things aren’t scary.

One dangerous thing that isn’t scary is working a ho-hum job. You have to be careful with that. Because if you’re not, you wake up one day and you’re 60 years old and you wonder where your life went 😱

The Three Buckets Question (For Closing Sales)

A question posted in a private entrepreneurs forum I’m a member of…

What’s one thing you did that unexpectedly increased conversions or sales?

Leon Bennetts replied 👇

Using the “three buckets question” to close out sales calls. It goes something like this.

Alright so at this point people are usually in one of three buckets…

1. They’re either like, “I love this, everything sounds great, how do we move forward?”

2. Or they’re feeling like “This sounds pretty good, but there’s a few things I need to work out and resolve first.”

3. Or they’re like, “No, I hate this, it’s not going to work”.

Which of those would you say best describes where you’re at?

It works incredibly well because there’s no pressure. They’re just self-identifying where they’re at.

If they choose bucket 1 – it’s a perfect way to move into closing out the deal on the spot. If they choose 2, you’ve got a great opening to bring those objections and questions to the surface. And if they choose 3… well great, you know it’s probably time to move on.

You can use this question yourself or have your salespeople do it…

it’s much easier to get your salespeople to regularly use this question compared to other closing strategies. Once they practice it a few times on a call and realise how natural and non-confrontational it feels, they’re way more likely to want to use it in the future.

It’s the path of least resistance to wrapping up sales calls without awkward tension.

How She Earned $10K/Month as a Virtual Assistant

Kayla SloanKayla SloanVirtual Assistant & Course Creator $10,000+ monthly revenue
Published March 2, 2023 by Niall Doherty

Kayla Sloan started her blog as a hobby way back in December 2013.

She networked with other bloggers and leveraged those connections to land her first freelance gigs

I landed my first freelance writing job by simply asking to see if any of my blogger friends knew of any opportunities. One of them actually became my first client!

After a few weeks of working together, I noticed that the posts I was writing hadn’t been published. Since I always want to keep my clients happy, I simply asked if there was something I needed to do differently. That’s when my client mentioned that she was very overwhelmed with lots of other tasks and had gotten behind. She asked me if I was interested in working as her virtual assistant to help her get caught back up. Since I was desperate for money to get out of debt, I said yes.

That first month, I earned $285 and I was ecstatic!

Up until April of 2019, Kayla was posting regular income reports on her blog, showing that she was consistently earning $10,000+ per month by that point 💰

I’ve grown my business almost entirely from referrals. This means I don’t have to pitch to get new clients and I can choose who I want to work with.

I always recommend to new VAs that they start with their existing network of friends, family, business owners, and bloggers. This will help you land a client with less competition, which means more pay.

Agreed 👍

That lines up with the first 2 methods listed here…

How To Earn Your First $100 Online This Weekend

Kayla launched her own VA training program at the end of 2017, and I’m guessing that has made up a good chunk of her income ever since.

It’s a common progression for online business builders…

Start out freelancing Gain experience and raise your ratesShare your experience to build an audienceEventually create a product you can sell to that audience

Kayla became well-known as a virtual assistant who was consistently earning $10,000+ per month. So naturally the product she created was a course called $10K VA (reviewed here).
