Matic Jurglič is a Slovenian programmer with an interesting side hustle.

He creates and sells “handmade busts of influential people” via an Etsy store.

Think concrete head-and-shoulder statues of people like Marcus Aurelius, Nikola Tesla and Elon Musk

Matic recently wrote…

Revenue is 2-6k USD depending on the season. I hired someone part time who took over production and shipping. it’s mostly passive revenue for me apart from growing the business by developing new products when I feel like it. The profit margin is around 50% after all material and labor costs are paid.

He lays out his process for creating the product here.

Fascinating to me that he’s earning good money from a product idea that is thousands of years old. And he’s built the business from a small town in Slovenia.

What other items from antiquity might sell well online?

Even if you’re not a craftsman like Matic, maybe you could team up with someone who is and you handle the ecommerce side of things.

Btw, the most expensive bust I’ve found is this strange Picasso creation from 1931. It sold for $106 million a few years back

Brad Johnson launched his website Song Production Pros in June of 2021.

It’s mainly a review site for guitars, songwriting tools, home studio tools, etc.

Brad told me via email…

I followed the system and achieved my first $1,000 month 12 months later and my first $2,000 month 17 months later. 2023 looks like it will be my best year yet. I’m seeing consistent growth and new business opportunities with my affiliate partnerships.

The site is monetized with affiliate offers and display ads. This post has both: The Best Acoustic Guitar Brands with Buyer’s Guide

The timeline Brad speaks to above is pretty typical for a site like this: $1000/month after 12 months, and double that about 6 months later

But that’s only if you can put in the work consistently, as Brad managed to do…

As a full-time dad to two toddlers, husband, and worker, staying consistent has been challenging. Even harder when the first year had very little growth. It was easy for me to want to compare myself to the “quick” successes of others. Still, I committed to staying as consistent as possible with writing content and building links as laid out in the course. I put everything else out of my mind and did those two things. I’m glad I did because my website has become more than a hope and dream and is now a legit business.

Someone on Hacker News claims to have created an app called Twitter Archive Eraser…

In a few clicks, load your Twitter archive, select tweets to keep or delete using our powerful search features, and watch them get deleted in real-time.

Pricing ranges from $9 to $39, one-time payments.

Apparently the service pulls in $3000 a month in revenue, despite the founder not having done much with it for the past 2 years

My app Twitter Archive Eraser […] used to be free, then I added a donation button and people, while barely donated, used to say that this is something they would have paid for!

I worked on a paid tier (learnt a tremendous amount about actually selling an app, integration with payment processors, licensing, more legal stuff than I wanted to etc.)

Almost from the get go, it started making +$3k/mo. With more changes and offering a Mac version along a Windows version, it averages around +$7k/mo of revenue consistently. I’m the only person on it and have a full time job. Barely need to make code changes and it requires minimal effort for customer support.

So for a while there it was earning him $7000/month

Apparently he built the app in the first place as a way to bulk-delete his own tweets.However, the business might be dead by the time you read this as Twitter was scheduled to shut down free access to their API yesterday (Feb 9)

A Multi-Million Dollar Newsletter Run by 1 Guy

Dan NiFounder of TLDR Newsletter $5 million estimated annual revenue

Dan Ni’s TLDR Newsletter has 850k subscribers and self-describes as…

the free daily newsletter with links and TLDRs of the most interesting stories in startups , tech , and programming !

Chenell Basilio has an insightful deep dive on Dan’s newsletter business.

She notes that Dan offers 3 sponsorship spots in each edition of the newsletter:

Top Section: $15,000Programming Section: $10,000Quick Links Section: $5,000

So…

If he sells all 3 placements for every issue, that’s $30k per issue. And this newsletter gets published every weekday.

That’s $150k per week.

Or $600,000 per month.

Or $7.8 million every year.

Even more impressive is that Dan only started the newsletter in 2018 and it apparently only takes him 30 minutes per day to put together

(I suspect he also spends a few hours a day finding content for the newsletter. 30 minutes is likely just the time he spends assembling each edition in his email software.)

According to Chenell, Dan relied on paid ads to land his first chunk of subscribers.

But not the usual paid ads…

Most companies go to Facebook and Google first, because there is a ton of scale to be had there. But [Dan] advocates starting with Reddit and Quora for people with smaller budgets.

He did this as well. He started off spending $50 a day on Reddit and Quora ads, which helped him get to 1,000 subscribers in the first month.
