The Perils of Niching Down
“Niche down” is common business advice.
I’ve often recommended that approach myself and I’ve shared many stories of people who have succeeded by focusing on a specific niche
Rob Hardy was all-in on this too, but has changed his tune…
The problem with niche strategy, in a nutshell, is that it’s a reliable destroyer of the human spirit. It’s built on the assumption that we can segment ourselves, and turn one static aspect of the self into an economic engine that makes the rest of our life feel how we wish it’d feel. It’s a nice idea in theory, and the kind of thing that might be true if humans were machines.
Fair point.
Rob goes on to say that the niche strategy “excels at producing immediate, observable results” and that it’s a reliable way to succeed financially
All of this would be fine if niche strategy resulted in creatives feeling great about their lives. But it doesn’t. More often than not, it leads to a downward spiral of decisions that feel inauthentic and forced. Those decisions pile up, one by one, until we’ve constructed a machine that meets our economic needs, but at the expense of our spirit.
My takeaway from Rob’s piece is that a niche strategy is still worth pursuing, especially when you’re just starting out. It’ll help you pay the bills.
But be wary of sticking with it long term
French Newsletter Earns €60,000 From Republished Content

Published February 23, 2023 by Niall Doherty
Inbox Collective has the story of Bulletin.fr, a French email newsletter
Recent editions discussed fondue, the practice of pruning trees, and the social history of cycling.
Each edition of the newsletter ends with a section called “Le Mot De La Fin,” which roughly translates to “The Final Word.”
And in 2022, Bulletin founder Jean Abbiateci launched a fascinating project: He took some of the best editions of “Le Mot De La Fin” and turned them into a book, The Dictionary of Extraordinary Words. Since launch, Bulletin has sold nearly 4,000 copies of the book, at a price of €20 each (about $21.50 US) — an impressive profit for a book featuring republished material from a newsletter!
Apparently that works out to €60,000 in profit since the book launched last year (about $64,500 USD)
Which is all the more impressive when you consider that Bulletin currently has only 30,000 email subscribers.
This is a good example of Daniel Vassallo’s “sell your sawdust” philosophy…
Sell your sawdust (stuff you already created as a side-effect). Many times you can sell your sawdust for money (on @gumroad) or for attention (on @github) with very little extra effort.
Jean notes however that you need to build trust with your audience to pull off something like this…
you have to keep in mind the question of longevity. For two years, I’ve put together projects that people have become attached to. You can’t just show up out of nowhere and say “go ahead and buy my book.” For two years, I didn’t ask my readers for anything but their opinion.
What sawdust do you produce as you go about your regular work?
Could you package that nicely and sell to your existing audience?
(Hmm, maybe I should consider putting my Momentos in a book and selling it )

$1 Million Panic Attack App

Published February 23, 2023 by Niall Doherty
I heard the story of Rootd at the 24-minute mark of this MFM podcast
It’s an app for “panic attack and anxiety relief,” with great ratings on the app stores and more than a million downloads on the Google Play store alone.
They offer a free trial for 7 days and then it’s $60 per year.
Best I can tell, founder Ania Wysocka first launched Rootd back in 2017. And according to the MFM podcast the app recently crossed $1 million in revenue
A big chunk of their revenue seems to come from company plans, which allow companies to bulk-purchase access to the app for their employees.
Ania shared how she came up with the idea for Rootd in an interview…
During my last year of university, I experienced my first panic attack, seemingly out of nowhere. In that time of uncertainty, confusion, and loneliness, I couldn’t find the support I needed or that spoke to my demographic.
Exhaustive personal research and my journey working with mental health professionals combined with my love for graphic design and entrepreneurship inspired me to create Rootd – an accessible resource to help anyone in need navigate their own journeys overcoming anxiety and panic attacks.
Amazing example of someone turning lemons into lemonade
Also interesting: Ania isn’t a coder.
She’s still a one-woman business and hires contractors to help her with programming and other tasks.
Her advice for aspiring app builders
I think many people with ideas for amazing apps worry that they’d need to raise a big round of investment or spend a ton of money for an agency to develop the app for them […]
My advice would be to not discount bootstrapping. Bootstrapping can be a lot of work and lonely at times, but it can definitely be a very viable and rewarding option too, as it has been for Rootd.

$5,000+ Selling No-Code Templates

Published February 23, 2023 by Niall Doherty
Amit Sarda tweets that he’s earned $5,000+ selling templates on the Glide template marketplace
Glide is a no-code software development platform.
Amit says he started building apps on Glide just to practice his no-code development skills…
Then came the template library. And the rest is history.
He sold his first template in July of 2020, so it’s taken him 2.5 years to crack the $5k mark. But it looks like things are picking up nicely…
still almost a week to go in Feb, but it is the biggest month ever, 2x+ than the previous best month.
Amit’s templates sell for as much as $250 a pop.
But here’s the twist: Amit earns WAY more doing no-code freelance work.
He charges $250/hour on Upwork and has earned more than $40,000 via that platform.
Amit recently uploaded a video detailing how he writes winning proposals on Upwork…
In this video, I talk about writing meaningful proposals on Upwork that get responses from clients.
Also check out his YouTube channel for a bunch of no-code tutorials and examples

$8000/Month From 100% AI Content?

Published February 23, 2023 by Niall Doherty
Matt Diggity claims to have achieved this in a recent video…
I used AI to create 526 articles for our new website just by pressing buttons. The website recently broke 51,000 organic sessions per month, and it now just hit number one on Google for its main target keyword. It also broke $8,000 in earnings last month.
Presumably those earnings come from a mix of display ads + affiliate offers.
Matt continues…
And the kicker is, I only started this project last March.
Understandably, he doesn’t reveal the website or the niche, and the process he describes still requires “a decent amount of work.”
You also need to spend a bit on tools and an aged domain to follow Matt’s process, though it should work out cheaper than paying writers to pump out 500+ articles
Another reason to watch Matt’s video…
Even if AI isn’t your jam, your competitors are using it, so you should know what you’re up against.

All that to say: we know a thing or two about such courses and making money online.

How does Build An Online Business help you make money?
Build An Online Business is a bundle of 3 courses…
Social Media For EntrepreneursBuild A Successful BlogAdvanced Blogging & Monetization StrategiesThe latter two courses aim to help you build and grow a blog that gets tons of traffic from Google and other search engines.
You would mainly monetize that traffic via affiliate marketing and email marketing.
Affiliate marketing is when you promote other people’s products or services, and collect a commission for each successful referral.
Email marketing involves sending promotional emails to groups of people to promote a product or service, build brand awareness, or engage with customers.
Then there is the Social Media For Entrepreneurs course, which is all about building a following on social media, then leveraging that audience to boost your business.
The sales page for BAOB sums up what you’ll learn like so…

Personally, I consider BAOB to be primarily a blogging course, as that’s what the majority of the lessons are about.
Learn more about bloggingWho is Build An Online Business for?Build An Online Business sells itself as a platform for all bloggers, but suggests that it probably works best for people new to blogging.
Here’s one such claim…
If you’re just starting out on your journey, and dream of having a business that provides for you and your family and impacts thousands of people, the course bundle is for you…
Having seen inside the training, I believe that BAOB isn’t really suitable for advanced bloggers. But then it’s not ideal for new bloggers either, as it doesn’t show you how to actually create a blog on WordPress or any other platform
Given that, I’d say you are best suited for this course if you already have a blog set up, but don’t have much blogging experience.
70+ ways how to make money online (including easy options)Do Holly Homer and Daren Smith have a good reputation?Yes.
Holly Homer actually teaches the course, so you’ll see her in all the videos.
She apparently has more than 15 years of blogging experience and runs a blog that gets about 1 million visits per month…

I don’t know if Holly regularly starts new blogs from scratch.
But she’s active on her own blog and her huge Facebook page, Quirky Momma. Last I checked, she had more than 3.5 million fans there! She has also written several books on motherhood.
Here’s an interview with Holly Smith so you can get a feel for her style (interview starts at the 6:55 mark)…
Daren Smith is the founder of Craftsman Creative and the guy behind the scenes of BAOB. You won’t see him in any of the video lessons. He has started and run several companies, and has over 10 years of experience in video and marketing.
Here’s Daren interviewing another entrepreneur…
Are Build An Online Business students getting results? It’s easy to find people praising Build An Online Business, but I had a hard time finding students reporting that they’d achieved significant results from following the training.
Even one of the best testimonials doesn’t give any specifics…

See, I would love to hear what level of success April has achieved in her business, and how exactly Holly’s teachings have helped her achieve that success.
Those are the best kinds of testimonials, but I didn’t really find anything like that for this course.
How much does Build An Online Business cost? You can pay for lifetime access to any part of Build An Online Business – or the whole bundle – one-time or in 3 monthly installments.
The prices for the bundle and its parts are as follows:
Build An Online Business (bundle)$495 one-time or 3 monthly installments of $200Social Media For Entrepreneurs
$179 one-time or 3 monthly installments of $65Build A Successful Blog
$199 one-time or 3 monthly installments of $75Advanced Blogging & Monetization Strategies
$349 one-time or 3 monthly installments of $125
There is also a single upsell called Holly Homer Network Marketing. Its listed price is $99.
Keep in mind that you may need to put some extra money aside for email marketing software (and eventually hiring a team) to fully utilize the training and follow all Holly’s recommendations.
Build An Online Business Discount? There is a discount for Build An Online Business if you decide to buy the whole bundle.
If you pay for it in one go – as opposed to buying each of the 3 courses separately – you’re basically getting a 30% discount.
And if you pay for the bundle in 3 monthly installments, you still end up saving ~15%.
Other than that, there is a place to enter a discount code on the Build An Online Business checkout, but I have yet to find a legit discount or coupon code.
Refund PolicyThe sales page for Build An Online Business specifies a 30-day, no-questions-asked money-back guarantee…
You can get a full refund within 30 days of your enrollment in the course. Just email daren@craftsmancreative.co within those 30 days and it will be refunded, no questions asked!
I haven’t seen anyone reporting issues getting a refund on their purchase, so you can rest easy with this guarantee.
How is Build An Online Business structured? Here’s what the training looks like once you log in and open one of the lessons…

The courses within Build An Online Business each have between 19 and 27 video-only lessons and a length between 2 and 4 hours. Most of the videos are quite concise as they are usually shorter than 10 minutes, with only a few of them getting close to half an hour.
Holly covers a lot of topics in the training. She clearly knows what she’s talking about and drops plenty of knowledge bombs.
But there are still some glaring omissions. For example, I found it strange for a blogging course to have no lesson on actually setting up your blog on WordPress (or similar).
Especially given the tagline of the course on the sales page (emphasis mine)…
Grow your community, create a website that works, and make money doing what you love.
Although Holly speaks well and the videos are nicely produced, I was hoping for many more screencasts inside of the training. But ~80% of the time, you’re looking at Holly talking to the camera. Only occasionally does she share her screen to show you the exact steps she’s talking about.
Btw, there is no community aspect to this course. You don’t get access to a private Facebook group or anything like that.

Some positive points for Build An Online Business…

Some knocks on Build An Online Business…

Should you join Build An Online Business?
If you’ve never had your own blog and would like to start from scratch, I think you’ll be disappointed with Build An Online Business.
But if you already know how to get your blog online and little beyond that, you’ll find some useful info within BAOB. Specifically on how to create and promote your blog posts, and how to build an audience on social media.

Plus, there are plenty of free tutorials online that can help you learn fast
For example, read these two ultimate GMB guides and you’ll know more than most…
Google My Business: A Guide to Google Business Profile (SEMrush)The Ultimate Guide to Google My Business (HubSpot)Employee Mindset vs Entrepreneur Mindset
As an employee, it’s very easy to embrace this attitude…
Just tell me what to do and I’ll do it.
You do whatever your boss or manager tells you to do, and you get paid.
Great
Unfortunately, many people carry that same attitude with them when starting their own business.
I was one of those people.
I didn’t start my first business until I was 28 years old, after a decade of being an employee
And because I still had that employee mindset when starting out, I was constantly looking for step-by-step guides or systems that I could blindly follow to build a successful online business.
Just tell me what to do and I’ll do it.
Unfortunately, that’s not how entrepreneurship works.
Sure, some guides and courses can be helpful, even indispensable. They teach you best practices, help you avoid common mistakes, and greatly speed up your progress
But ultimately entrepreneurship is a creative pursuit. It’s about finding your own path and building a business that’s unique to you. It’s about figuring out your own step-by-step process.
Think of an entrepreneur you admire: did they become successful by blindly following a system someone else had figured out?
I doubt it.
They may have started out trying to do it that way, but eventually they realized – like I did – that there is no one-size-fits-all step-by-step plan for building a successful business.
And that’s because so much of it depends on YOU…
Your goalsYour strengthsYour weaknessesYour skillsYour resourcesYour opportunitiesWhat worked for someone else may not work for you, and vice versa.
So keep in mind that entrepreneurship requires you to be creative, to figure things out as you go, to put your own spin on things.
The sooner you embrace that mindset, the better off you’ll be

$3000/Month Virtual Assistant Within 6 Months

Published February 20, 2023 by Niall Doherty
Here’s an interview with a woman named Jacqi Dix, sharing how she went from zero to $3000/month as a virtual assistant within six months…
Jacqi used to work an office job as a CFO, but got laid off and decided to find online work so she could be home more for her daughter with special needs.
Not wanting to do the same kind of work online – “I’ve always been told I don’t have the personality to be an accountant” – Jacqi started learning graphic and web design.
Now she does all kinds of tasks for her clients, including website updates, email management, CRM work, etc.
She has two main clients…
A company that does accounting for wineries. Her daughter’s school. The first pays her $25/hour. The second gives Jacqi’s daughter free schooling (valued at $4200/year) in exchange for her VA services.
Maybe there’s a business in your area that you can “barter” with like this?
Jacqi also says in the interview that her clients sometimes ask her to do something she doesn’t know how to do. In those situations she first tries to figure it out and do it herself.
But if that proves too difficult, she advises the client to hire a specialist.
She’ll say…
I don’t mind figuring it out but you may be able to pay somebody an hour and have it done, whereas it may take me three hours.
I used to do similar as a freelance web developer.
I could always figure out tricky coding problems given enough time. But I would often advise my clients to hire a programmer instead. I’d even recommend a programmer and arrange everything with them so the client only had to deal with me.
It was a win-win-win
(Btw, Jacqi credits a course called 90 Day VA with helping her launch her VA career. I’ve reviewed that here.)

The 89-Year-Old TikTok Superstar

Published February 20, 2023 by Niall Doherty
From a 2021 article…
88-year-old Staffordshire man is TikTok’s wealthiest ‘granfluencer’
‘Grandad Joe’ has over four million followers and his videos see him rake in around £134k a year
Joe Allington – aka Grandad Joe – is still going strong on TikTok. He’s now 89 years old and has 6.2 million followers.
He could well be earning £200k a year at this stage ($240k USD)
One of his most popular videos has 52 million views and features him dancing in front of a mirror.
Seems he monetizes with brand sponsorships, like this one for Lipton Ice Tea.
Grandad Joe got started with this video on TikTok back in 2020…
His first ever TikTok video was a sad sight we all saw too much off back at the start of lockdown, where the elder generation were struggling with the empty shelves in the supermarket. This video gained an incredible 42 million views (and counting) and Joe became a smash hit over night – not bad for your first post!
The Guardian has a list of other “granfluencers”
My favorite is 89-year-old @dolly_broadway, who has 2.4 million followers on TikTok.
She starts off a recent video by saying, “Hey bitches get ready with me to go see my booty call”
(Shout out to Alan Swan’s newsletter Older Not Over for the heads up about these grandparents crushing it on TikTok.)
