$5000/Month Letting People Cut In Line

Published March 13, 2023 by Niall Doherty
Jaisal Rathee tweets…
February was one of the BEST months for Startups.fyi
$5,000+ in total revenue
10,000+ newsletter subscribers
5.9k unique website visits
200+ new startup submissions in this month alone
Startups.fyi is basically a directory of startups and side-projects.
Anyone can submit their project to be featured in their directory and newsletter. I did it myself a few months back.
Here’s the clever part of Jaisal’s business model: it’s free to get your project featured, but when you submit your info they tell you something like…
Your estimated feature date is 181 days from now
But of course you can skip to the front of the line if you pay
I paid $49 to get featured within a week. Over the next 7 days, that feature resulted in 179 unique visitors to my website and 27 confirmed newsletter subscribers. Plus a backlink to my site (from this page).
I believe Jaisal got traction by scouring Twitter for success stories, and then adding them to Startups.fyi himself (example).
I love directory-style businesses like this because each piece of content is easy to produce. But over time the directory – and the audience it attracts – can become quite valuable
What other industries or niches could you do this for?

€2.4 Million Selling Online Dental Courses

Published March 13, 2023 by Niall Doherty
That’s osteocom.me, which is a bit like Masterclass for dentists
This company was featured on Financial Times’ newest annual ranking of Europe’s fastest-growing companies.
Apparently Osteocom was founded in 2009 in Italy and did €2.4 million (~$2.7 million USD) in revenue in 2021, up from €911K in revenue in 2018.
I heard about the FT list via Glen Allsopp, who highlighted 8 of those companies and wrote about Osteocom…
Online courses for people looking to learn from…the best dental professionals.
Not surprised this is a thing but had no idea it could be so successful. So many other niches this could work in.
Agreed.
Eventually every profession will have its own trusted e-learning platform like Osteocom.
Could you build something like this for a profession you’re familiar with?
Also, regarding the FT list, Jakob Greenfield writes…
Since a lot of the websites are in local languages, it can be hard to understand what each company on the list actually does. So I scraped their websites and then used GPT to write a short explanation. Table view here, card view here. (I did this for the first 200 companies so far…

How He Became a Digital Nomad and Moved to Mexico

Published March 13, 2023 by Niall Doherty
The description of this 6-minute video on YouTube…
Isaac Galvan, 23 was living paycheck-to-paycheck in Port Arthur, Texas but during the pandemic, he taught himself how to code and landed a remote job as a website developer making $12 per hour, about $22,000 per year.
His newfound flexibility allowed him to relocate to Querétaro, Mexico. In April 2021, he packed up his belongings and began his new life.
With only $3,000 saved up, he quickly found how far the U.S. dollar stretched abroad. Shortly after his move, he made a down payment on a new car, signed a lease on an apartment and even saved a few hundred dollars a month.
Isaac’s cost of living in Mexico is only $1400. He eats out a lot and has his own apartment.
He’s not exactly getting rich at $12 an hour, but he’s way better off now than before.
And assuming he keeps improving his web dev skills, he should be able to charge much more for his services in the future
(I used to charge $80+ per hour as a freelance web dev.)
Plenty more nuance to Isaac’s story in a video on his own YouTube channel…
He lists several resources there that he used to teach himself web development

$1200/Month Selling Whispered Conversations

Published March 9, 2023 by Niall Doherty
That’s how I’d describe FundedList.
Dhruv Kar bought the business a few months back and reports that the project earns about $1200 per month
He describes it like so…
It’s a weekly list of companies that were funded in the last 7 days with founder/ceo contact information.
I use a mix of scraping and manual validation to make the list and currently doing cold emails to sell. I’m not truly a developer or a marketer, so learning a lot while attempting to make this work.
It seems to be valuable to different types of agencies — recruiting, design, web etc.
Here’s Dhruv asking on Hacker News for advice on growing the business, and sharing an example report that he sends out to customers (it’s a simple spreadsheet with 400+ rows).
Another way to think of Dhruv’s business: he’s democratizing information.
Similar to Rich Barton, but on a much smaller scale.
Rich Barton founded three companies each worth over a billion dollars…
Kevin Kwok writes that Barton built all three companies using the same playbook:
Glassdoor revealed how employees really felt about companies. Zillow shed light on what any house was worth. Expedia let people see the prices and availability of flights and hotels without talking to an agent. These were knowable things that people have always talked about with each other.
[…] Rich Barton took these whispered conversations and made them public for everyone to see. Afterwards, everyone wondered why they were ever private.
What whispered conversations could you make public?

He Charged $20,000 For a Sales Page Design
Someone on Reddit realizing that they can charge much more for their services…
I heard someone spent [$20,000] for their sales page to be designed. They made a whopping $0.
I thought this was so fascinating because the guy obviously saw it fit to spend that much on something that shouldn’t take more than a month to create.
I just raised my prices to a similar price as the landing page for 6 months of work. I’ve been having the worst imposter syndrome and I don’t feel like I deserve that much. But seeing this made me laugh a bit because my first thought would never be to charge that much.
I forget people have the money to pay for those types of things.
The comments on that thread are interesting too, several stories of people charging high prices for simple enough services
Often a key part of that is framing your service in the right way, like this commenter does…
I create “Digital Employees” for local business owners and I only charge them $2800 a month for it.
If they are hiring they can afford it since it is cheaper than hiring a minimum-wage worker, and this digital employee has only one specific job to do: Generating monthly sales.
Yes, technically what I build for them is a sales page, but it’s connected to a funnel with paid ads. I call it a “Digital Employee” because it solves a very specific problem for business owners, who hire for everything else, but neglect hiring someone to make them more money.
So two things to keep in mind the next time you’re pitching someone on your services…
$20,000 isn’t a lot of money for some clients.Whoever controls the framing, controls the sales. That last point is the title of a good video on framing by Bedros Keuilian …
Low-Key Developer Earning $60,000/Month From 2 Apps

Published March 9, 2023 by Niall Doherty
Noah Kagan asked on Twitter…
If you had to create a $20k MRR business in 24 hours, what kind of business would you start?
Ismael Diaby responded with lots of great ideas and examples
(If you’re wondering how his response is so long, it’s because Twitter Blue users can now tweet up to 4000 characters.)
One example from Ismael…
Found this AirPod Finder app, making $13k/ month with no advertisements. They’re selling the app for $400K so was able to see their revenue. Team of 2.
The app simply helps you find your AirPod. It’s more accurate than the find my iPhone native app.
I couldn’t find out for sure which app he was referring to, but this one called Wunderfind has almost 100,000 ratings on the Apple App Store
That app was created in 2019 by Hendrik Folkerts, who looks like a young Bill Gates.
He has several other apps for sale, including one called Printer App: Print & Scan PDF.
All his apps are pretty simple, and apparently the two I’ve mentioned are pulling in $60,000 per month in revenue
Unclear if Hendrik is using ads to get so many downloads and generate so much revenue, but I suspect it’s mostly organic.
His main marketing “hack” seems to be naming his apps according to what people are likely to type into the search bar in the app store.
Hendrik keeps a low profile. He’s on Twitter and LinkedIn but rarely posts anything
Always nice to see someone crushing it online without a big following.
Reminds me of that Bill Murray quote…
I always want to say to people who want to be rich and famous: ‘try being rich first’. See if that doesn’t cover most of it. There’s not much downside to being rich, other than paying taxes and having your relatives ask you for money. But when you become famous, you end up with a 24-hour job.

25% Success Rate = $20k in One Month

Published March 9, 2023 by Niall Doherty
Mohd Danish launched 4 projects in the last 10 months.
3 of them are the kind of indie maker projects you’d expect to find on Product Hunt…
Form with SheetQuick APITable AppsUnfortunately, all of those projects failed
But Mohd’s fourth project definitely wasn’t a failure…
MVP As A Service –
Made $20k in one month by building 2 MVPs for others.
(MVP = Minimum Viable Product)
Mohd finds clients for this service by building in public on Twitter, and then announcing his availability.
So in that sense, none of his “failed” projects were really a failure, as they all helped establish his expertise when he talked about them to his ~7000 followers.
I expect Mohd can continue to earn a good living with his service business. Even with one new client per month he’d be earning $10,000/month and could keep building his own products on the side until one takes off
What’s a service you could offer while you’re waiting for your main business to bear fruit?

This Mental Health Blog Earns $3000/Month

Published March 9, 2023 by Niall Doherty
Hugo Huijer started Tracking Happiness back in 2017.
He now earns $3000/month from it
We generate most of our revenue from display ads, but I’m constantly trying to diversify this. Most recently, we’ve launched our first digital course, which is the first step in diversifying into an income stream we have 100% control over.
Hugo’s background is in “offshore engineering,” and mental health stuff was just a personal interest. He started his blog to share what was working for him.
Not many people read his posts initially…
For more than a year, I wrote about whatever I thought was interesting. This resulted in (literally) over a hundred articles. These articles were not targeted, unoptimized, and didn’t answer any questions someone might have. And therefore, there was no traffic.
Same for me when I started blogging way back. I wrote about whatever I wanted – mainly travel, productivity, lifestyle design – but I struggled to build an audience.
What changed for me was the same thing that changed for Hugo…
Only when I learned the basics of SEO and keyword research did I see Tracking Happiness as a business (as opposed to just a hobby).
Check out the top 3 pages on Tracking Happiness (according to Ahrefs) and you can see how they are monetized with Mediavine display ads
The cool thing about monetizing with display ads – as opposed to affiliate marketing – is that you’re not limited to targeting keywords with strong buyer intent.
You can write about any topic in your niche that people are searching for.
As long as you rank well and get decent traffic, you’ll make some money from site visitors clicking on the ads

$1,400 in Pre-Sales (Digital Product)

Published March 8, 2023 by Niall Doherty
Gene Maryushenko writes about his experience pre-selling a digital product via Gumroad, to the tune of $1400
The product is Tailwind CSS React Application Components.
Yeah, I’m not sure what that is either, but no worries. The important takeaway is that Gene was able to leverage his audience of ~5000 followers on Twitter for the pre-sale.
Gene’s advice if you don’t already have an audience…
I would start hanging out where your potential customers hang out – Facebook groups, Slack channels, here on indie hackers by providing something of value. Your goal is to tease out what’s coming, but also to build rapport and trust. You want people to be familiar with who you are before you even show them anything for sale.
Also, this tweet from Gene, about shutting down another of his products, speaks to the highs and lows of entrepreneurship
