Professors of the Jungle

Phil Knight is the founder of Nike 👟

Words from his excellent book, Shoe Dog

It’s always a happy occasion to be walking a campus, but also bracing, because while I find students today much smarter and more competent than in my time, I also find them far more pessimistic. Occasionally they ask in dismay: “Where is the U.S. going? Where is the world going?” Or: “Where are the new entrepreneurs?” Or: “Are we doomed as a society to a worse future for our children?”

I tell them about the devastated Japan I saw in 1962. I tell them about the rubble and ruins that somehow gave birth to wise men like Hayami and Ito and Sumeragi. I tell them about the untapped resources, natural and human, that the world has at its disposal, the abundant ways and means to solve its many crises. All we have to do, I tell the students, is work and study, study and work, hard as we can.

Put another way: We must all be professors of the jungle.

Think of “the jungle” as whatever mess you’re going through. It’s a tough place to exist, but there are always untapped resources there at your disposal.

Work and study, and keep your eyes peeled for those opportunities 👀

$300K in 2 Years From His Ghostwriting Biz

James NuveenJames NuveenFreelance Ghostwriter $300,000 revenue in first 2 years ghostwriting
Published March 30, 2023 by Niall Doherty

James Nuveen’s Twitter bio

I quit my job, started and grew a $300k ghostwriting biz, & moved to Colombia 🇨🇴

James reveals on his website that he earned $999 in his first month running his own business, then $12,810 his second month 🤑

A big part of his success was building up a network before he really needed it…

When I started my company, I had mentors, other entrepreneurs and potential clients to rely on once I quit my job. I cannot understate how HUGE that was.

I recommend before you quit [your job], spend your 6-month runway building relationships with people who will ride alongside you, giving you advice and even paying you for your services.

How do you build those relationships? 🤔

I don’t mean going to those weird events where everyone has an ulterior motive and you have to wear nametags. No.

I mean reaching out to people online, asking how you can help them, sharing with them your story, showing you care, meeting up in person to share quality time together.

It took James some time to figure out which service to offer…

There’s a difference between what people need and what they’re willing to pay big money for.

Do not build a service that people are willing to pay only 25¢ a month for.

I went from trading super generalized “digital marketing services” for $500 per “project” (what does that even mean? 🤣) …

To trading 4 SEO-optimized articles repurposed for social media, video scripts and an email newsletter for $2500 per month.

Note the difference between those two service descriptions. The first is so vague that it’s hard for clients to imagine the result. The second is super-specific and makes it obvious what the outcome will be.

Check the description of your own product or service. How do you describe it on your website or in person? 🧐

Is it obvious to a customer or client what the outcome will be?

Hey GPT, Here’s $100, Make Me As Much Money As Possible

Jackson Greathouse Fall tweeted a couple of weeks back…

I gave GPT-4 a budget of $100 and told it to make as much money as possible.

The prompt he started with…

You are HustleGPT, an entrepreneurial Al. I am your human counterpart. I can act as a liaison between you and the physical world. You have $100, and your only goal is to turn that into as much money as possible in the shortest time possible, without doing anything illegal. I will do everything you say and keep you updated on our current cash total. No manual labor

🤖 GPT’s first suggestion was to “set up an affiliate marketing site making content around Eco Friendly / sustainable living products.”

So Jackson went and created GreenGadgetGuru.com. Even the site’s logo design came from AI. He launched the site within 24 hours and his tweet announcing it got 1.5 million views 🤯

The site itself doesn’t seem to have made much money, but Jackson has been able to leverage the attention he’s received for this project to…

Generate 20+ million impressions on TwitterGrow from 3000 to 124K followers in a couple of weeksStart a discord community for people building with GPT (~2500 members)Appear on CNN

Actually I’m skeptical about that last one because I’ve only seen Jackson’s screenshots of the appearance, no video. And the recent images of the swagged-out pope have me doubting every image I see 😵

Best I can tell, Jackson has so far earned only $130 in revenue from the project, mainly via selling ad spots in his Twitter feed (example).

Although on day 2 he tweeted

Cash on hand: $1,378.84 ($878.84 previous balance + $500 new investment)

The company is currently valued at $25,000, considering the recent $500 investment for 2%.

Regardless, IMO the big success here is the audience that Jackson has been able to build in a short amount of time, simply by leveraging a hot trend to get a lot of attention 🚀

I expect he’ll have lots more money-making opportunities come from that.

$18/Hour Teaching English With No Qualifications

Lydia CarrollLydia CarrollCommunity English Tutor on iTalki $18 per hour
Published March 30, 2023 by Niall Doherty

Lydia Carroll has an 8-minute video detailing the pros and cons of being a community tutor on iTalki…

iTalki is a language learning platform, where anyone can sign up and book online lessons with professional teachers or community tutors 💬

Lydia explains the difference…

Professional teachers have university degrees and generally charge a higher rate… Community tutors are simply native speakers of the language that they’re teaching…

Community tutors generally provide less structure. For example, I mainly offer conversation practice.

So even if you have no teaching experience or qualifications, you can sign up to iTalki as a community tutor in whatever language you speak fluently.

Lydia is from Australia 🇦🇺 and signed up as an English language community tutor in April of 2022 (her profile). She has since taught more than 700 lessons on there.

She says in her video…

I started Italki when I was in Bali and now I’m in Australia. This winter I’ll be teaching from New Zealand and next year I plan to teach from the UK.

Over the course of almost a year I’ve increased my rate from USD $5/hour to $18/hour.

Italki does take a 20% fee though, so Lydia is ultimately left earning $14.40/hour.

I scraped a bunch of profiles on iTalki a couple of years ago and found rates ranging from…

$4-25 an hour for community English tutors$5-44 an hour for professional English teachers

In her video, Lydia lists some pros and cons of being a community tutor on iTalki.

Pros 👍

You don’t need any formal qualifications. You don’t need any fancy equipment.Work for yourself, on your own schedule.Work as much or as little as you like.Meet amazing people from all over the world.Work from anywhere.Set your own rates.iTalki finds students for you.

Cons 👎

Can take 1-2 weeks to get paid. You might need to pay for Zoom.Creepy guys being creepy.Accidentally accepting lesson requests from beginner-level students.Italki’s 20% fee.

You definitely won’t get rich teaching on iTalki, especially as a community tutor. But it can be a nice side hustle, especially if you like meeting and chatting with people from other cultures 🌎

6-Figure Niche Site in 2 Years With Zero SEO Experience

Grady HuddGrady HuddNiche Site Owner $6000 peak monthly profit from one niche site
Published March 30, 2023 by Niall Doherty

Grady Hudd’s Twitter bio reads…

I built a 6-figure niche website in 2 years with zero previous SEO experience.

He doesn’t reveal his site, but he shares a lot more about how he and a friend built it in a recent interview

The main site that we have is around 2.5 years old. It’s got 215 posts on it. At its peak it was doing around 170,000 pageviews a month and bringing in around $9,000 AUD a month in profit.

$9000 AUD = $6000 USD approx 💰

About 80% of the revenue comes from display ads, and the rest from affiliate marketing

Grady’s site is in a seasonal niche, which apparently peaks in the summer. At the time of the interview he said the website was only earning around $2500 per month, but he expects it to rise again soon 📈

As for how they chose their niche…

You could call it a hobby niche… it’s something that both my mate and I were really kind of into and interested in… We’re certainly not experts, it’s something that we enjoy doing.

Grady didn’t have any experience with SEO before starting the site. Neither did his buddy. They learned on the fly how to get traffic from Google and other search engines.

One tactic they found useful for keyword research was Income School’s alphabet soup method 😎

Grady’s advice for anyone thinking to start a niche site…

Just do it, just start one… give it a good crack for eight months and if you’re not seeing any movement, then maybe reposition. But just have a go.

It was around the 8 month mark that Grady’s site made its first dollar. They’d already published 80 articles by then.

So this kind of business definitely takes a while to get going 😰

Which is another reason to focus on a niche you’re interested in and enjoy researching and writing about. Otherwise it’s hard to stay motivated long enough to break through and see results.

Before Deciding To Overcome An Obstacle…

🎾 From a book called The Inner Game of Tennis by W. Timothy Gallwey…

It is said that all great things are achieved by great effort. Although I believe that is true, it is not necessarily true that all great effort leads to greatness.

A very wise person once told me, “When it comes to overcoming obstacles, there are three kinds of people. The first kind sees most obstacles as insurmountable and walks away. The second kind sees an obstacle and says, I can overcome it, and starts to dig under, climb over, or blast through it. The third type of person, before deciding to overcome the obstacle, tries to find a viewpoint where what is on the other side of the obstacle can be seen. Then, only if the reward is worth the effort, does he attempt to overcome the obstacle.”

What obstacle are you trying to overcome?

Before putting too much into it, can you sneak a peek at what awaits you on the other side?

$5600 From Her Drop Servicing Biz in the First 6 Days

May NgMay NgSerial Entrepreneur $5600 revenue from drop servicing in 6 days
Published March 27, 2023 by Niall Doherty

This video from May Ng is from 2020 but I reckon there’s still plenty of opportunity to emulate her success…

She basically set herself up as a middle-woman 😎 providing services such as video editing, web design, SEO, etc.

May started with video editing and targeted property agents, as she had contacts in that line of work and they often need video editing services to show off their available properties.

May then found a well-reviewed video editing service on Fiverr, and copied the listing to Carousell.sg. Carousell is a goods and services marketplace for Singapore, where May is based 🇸🇬

She then took orders through Carousell, directing her property agent contacts to that listing.

After jumping on a call and sending her some work samples, one of May’s contacts signed up for the following service…

12 months premium package – $3997
– Cap at 15 videos
– Free 1x video ad promotion

She went on to sell some more packages within a few days, including SEO and web design services that clients requested from her.

After six days, she had earned $8000 Singapore dollars ($5600 USD) 🤑

Sounds like May outsourced most of the actual work to service providers on Fiverr. It’s unclear how much she paid those providers in total, but the pricing displayed for one is only $15 per video. So she probably paid just $240 USD for the package listed above, thereby earning herself a very nice profit.

All that said, don’t go thinking that drop servicing is a super-easy business. You still need some serious skills to succeed at something like this.

Skills like…

SalesIdentifying and hiring talentProject management

If you can develop and master those skills, the sky’s the limit with this business model 📈

Btw, I found May’s video via this report from Trends.vc…

Productized Services: Software with a Service, Unlimited Services, Drop Services

ChatGPT Plugins: The Next Gold Rush?

A few days ago, OpenAI announced “initial support for plugins” in ChatGPT…

Plugins are tools designed specifically for language models with safety as a core principle, and help ChatGPT access up-to-date information, run computations, or use third-party services.

It’s not available to everyone yet but there is a waitlist you can sign up for 📝

There’s an amazing video demo of a plugins use-case on this page, starting with the prompt…

Looking to eat vegan food in San Francisco this weekend. Could you get me one great restaurant suggestion for Saturday and a simple recipe for Sunday (just the ingredients)? Please calculate the calories for the recipe using WolframAlpha. Finally order the ingredients on Instacart.

The plugins in that use-case are WolframAlpha and Instacart.

So it looks like ChatGPT has the potential to become Zapier on steroids.

Liv Boeree tweeted about this “unfathomably powerful update,” and Elon Musk replied that it is “extremely concerning” 😱

Those fears aside, ChatGPT plugins will surely open up plenty of money-making opportunities.

Fireship on YouTube speculates…

What we might be seeing here is the birth of a next generation app store. If that’s true, there’s going to be a huge opportunity for developers to get in early, just like when the Apple App Store opened in 2008.

If you’re not a developer, you could still become a ChatGPT consultant, helping companies leverage the power of this technology to improve their operations.

Your business would be along the lines of that of Sami Abid, who I profiled a few weeks back. He earns $6000/month as a freelance automation manager, using low- and no-code apps like Airtable, Notion and Zapier.

ChatGPT sounds like the next level for this kind of service 🚀

The Internet Dad With 4.5 Million YouTube Subscribers

Rob KenneyRob KenneyInternet Dad $7000+ estimated monthly revenue
Published March 27, 2023 by Niall Doherty

Back in April 2020, Rob Kenney started a channel called Dad, how do I?

Rob is in his 50’s now but his own father left him when he was a kid. He started his channel as a way to teach kids things his dad never taught him 🥰

His first couple of videos…

How to tie a tie… How to shave your face…

According to the Washington Post, Rob’s channel took off quick…

Kenney released his first video shortly after the coronavirus pandemic was declared. He wanted to provide practical advice (“How to fix most running toilets”) and emotional support (“I am proud of you!”). But in a time defined by isolation and loneliness, his messages resonated with far more than the 30 or 40 subscribers he expected as the world craved connection. Less than two months after his first post, he surpassed 1 million subscribers.

How to fix most running toilets… I am proud of you!…

Rob now has 4.5 million subscribers on YouTube, has published a book, and occasionally has dad chats with the likes of Kevin Hart 🤯

Social Blade estimates that Rob’s channel earns up to $2000/month from YouTube ads. That’s way less than I expected, but it could be accurate given that most of his newer videos only get 10-50k views.

Rob also monetizes his channel with sponsorships. For example, his video about filing taxes is sponsored by FreeTaxUSA…

He’s also building up big followings on other platforms…

Facebook (351k followers)TikTok (240k)Instagram (122k)

All told, I’d estimate that Rob’s brand is earning him at least $7,000 per month, and likely much more than that.My main takeaway from his success is how simple and genuine his videos are. Rob shoots the videos on his smartphone, doesn’t use any fancy editing, and is known to drop the occasional dad joke 😂

He Earns $200K/Year as a Freelance Motion Designer

Austin SaylorAustin SaylorFreelance Motion Designer $200,000+ annual freelance income
Published March 27, 2023 by Niall Doherty

Austin Saylor is a freelance 2d motion designer.

You can see samples of his work in this 1-minute demo reel.

Austin writes

🎯 In 2021, I set the goal of making $200k and I shared everything along the way

💰 In total, I made $206,755

2x: This more than doubled my income

Then last year he earned another $200k despite taking 2 months off work.

Here’s a 10-minute video on Austin’s YouTube channel showing how he animates a logo in Adobe After Effects…

Austin tweets

Your value is NOT yours to decide

All clients will not get the same value from animation.

Mama’s 🍕 ain’t gonna pay you $40k for a video. They sell pizza by the slice & have one location.

Shopify might though. Your video could garner thousands or millions of new customers.

Austin is speaking from experience here, as apparently 50% of his income last year came from just 3 big projects: $41k, $36k, $23k 💰

His advice for finding clients…

It’s a numbers game

What do you think would help you stay booked all year…

a. Reaching out to 1 or 2 studios in January. And that’s it?
b. Reaching out to 1 or 2 studios every week?

This is a rhetorical question 😜
