Freelance Copywriter: $0 to $200/hour in 1 Year

Published April 24, 2023 by Niall Doherty
Daniel Throssell is a freelance copywriter from Australia
In an interview a few years back he talked about learning copywriting from scratch and earning $200/hour within a year via clients he found on Upwork.
Daniel is also featured in the book $1000 100 Ways, where he describes how he landed his first freelance gigs…
I started copywriting on Upwork, which made finding work fairly easy. Because I had no experience, I just resolved to out-prepare my competition, and overdeliver on all my jobs. So whenever I applied to a job, I’d do as much research as I could on what the client was asking for. Then, I’d take the time to write a specific portfolio piece that was similar to the work the client was asking for . . . and present it as a “sample” of my work (which it was).
Almost without fail, clients were blown away that I just happened to have done something so similar—and they were eager to hire me over people who were either less expensive or more experienced than me!
You can see Daniel’s Upwork profile here
Log into Upwork and you can go back through his history and see that his first job was…
Nine 200 Word Product Descriptions – $120So he wrote 1800 words for $120.
That’s pretty good pay for a first copywriting gig. But it sounds like Daniel put several hours into applying for that job and completing the work. I’m guessing his hourly rate worked out to be something like $20/hour.
IMO, his willingness to put in more work up front to win jobs and impress clients is the primary reason he was able to quickly raise his rate and start earning the big bucks
Daniel has earned over $70k on Upwork and billed 280 hours = $250/hour average.
His rate is currently set to $999 per hour.
Daniel writes in his profile…
When it comes to copywriters on Upwork … I’m the best you can get
I don’t care if you think I’m faking this, or if my attitude turns you off, because let’s be honest: you probably couldn’t afford me anyway.
Nowadays, most of Daniel’s clients probably find him via referral or his website.
More from him in that book I mentioned (links added)…
Two resources I recommend new copywriters check out are John Carlton’s Kick-Ass Copywriting Secrets of a Marketing Rebel, and Sean D’Souza’s e-book The Brain Audit. Both are ridiculously cheap as of the time I’m writing this.

Get Rich Quick vs Get Rich Easy
MJ DeMarco is the author of The Millionaire Fastlane, which is one of my top 3 books for online entrepreneurs
One of the key distinctions that has stuck with me since I first read the book a few years ago: Get Rich Quick vs Get Rich Easy
MJ points out that Get Rich Quick is actually possible – you can find examples everywhere – but people tend to confuse it with Get Rich Easy.
The distinction is that “get rich schemes” aren’t endemic of “Get Rich Quick” but its evil twin, “Get Rich Easy.” “Get Rich Easy” shadows its innocent sibling, leaving a trail of victims to be blamed by its brother. “Get Rich Easy” parades in the limelight and on Instagram feeds with pictures of beaches, palm trees, and used Ferraris. It lies, deceives, and casts a mirage of vanity that all desire. Just watch buy this $197 PDF or buy this stock software program, and wham, you will be rich in 10 days! No! That’s not “Get Rich Quick” but “Get Rich Easy”—and that only leads to a lighter wallet.
I once published a (fairly negative) review of something called 12 Minute Affiliate. That program is textbook Get Rich Easy.
Accordingly, student success stories are almost non-existent
So remember: it is possible to get rich quick – ie. in a matter of months or a few short years – but not without working your ass off.
How To Make $ Even if You Have 0 Followers

Published April 20, 2023 by Niall Doherty
Danny Postma is a serial entrepreneur who I’ve profiled before…
$50,105 In Sales Within 2 WeeksHe recently tweeted to his 70k followers…
“You’re only successful because you have a large following.”
BS. Here’s how you can do the same with 0 followers
I’m going to take figcomponents.com as an example. A product I’ve never mentioned here on Twitter that makes $1200/month.
That site is a “Free Figma Component Library.”
Figma is an interface design tool. It lets you create, share, and collaborate on designs for software, apps, websites, etc. Components are basically design elements that you can reuse inside Figma.
3-minute video explainer…
Danny’s site provides a bunch of Figma components for free, and some you need to pay for…
I curated a free Figma Community library into an easily copyable gallery of components. Zero investment needed.
[…] Free products keep users on the site, which boosts your product’s Google ranking. To earn trust, offer good stuff before asking for payment.
To earn money, limit some tools to paid, with a one-time payment for better conversion rates.
Back to Danny’s thread: he steps you through how he came up with the idea for the Figma Components website (keyword research), and drove traffic to it (SEO)
One nifty SEO hack there is to launch on ProductHunt…
It doesn’t matter if you become #1. Being in last place is still a win. Why?
Because Product Hunt gives you a link with a domain authority (DR) of 90/100. The higher the DR, the stronger the effect.
Here’s Danny’s listing on ProductHunt
The “visit website” button you see on that page is a valuable “dofollow” backlink to his website that boosts the SEO…
Lots of websites repost Product Hunt, meaning, you don’t get one backlink but most of the time 10-50.
This is enough to rank on the first page [of Google] with a [low difficulty keyword].
The cool thing about this hack is that you don’t need to have a “product” to post on ProductHunt.
I posted an article on there a while back, which resulted in a high-quality backlink to my website.
(Hmm, maybe I should be “launching” all of my articles on PH )
Also, there’s probably an opportunity here for someone to offer a “launch on ProductHunt” service, where you send them some details and they take care of everything for you on PH.
Could that someone be you?

$10K ARR and 1000 Downloads in 5 Months

Published April 20, 2023 by Niall Doherty
Joseph Lee writes that his new Chrome extension is already earning $10,000 in annual recurring revenue
I wanted to take a moment to publicly celebrate hitting $10k ARR and 1000+ Chrome store downloads for our side-project, Supademo
In a nutshell, Supademo allows anyone to create and share interactive demos or tours in <5 minutes.
It’s a pretty cool product, similar to screencast software like Loom but you can add interactive steps to guide people through a tour/demo.
Joe goes on to share lessons learned and growth channels that have worked well.
One of the latter
Posting and commenting on Reddit and Indiehackers – actually trying to add value while plugging your startup where helpful
You can see all of Joe’s Reddit posts and comments here. And his co-founder Koushik Marka seems to be the one posting on Indie Hackers.
The same type of post did best with each community…
Share your SaaS and I’ll make you a shareable interactive demo (Reddit)Post your product, and I’ll create an interactive product demo for your marketing website (IH)Could you try doing something similar to promote your own product or service?
For example:
Web designers: offer to critique people’s homepagesCopywriters: offer to create a better headline and intro for any articleVideographers: offer to cut up a long video into a snappy social clipOr, if you have a SaaS like Joe and Koushik, offer to use the tool yourself to generate some value for people in the community.
You could even do this with a software tool you have access to.
For example, you could offer to do some basic keyword research via Ahrefs for your followers on Twitter.

Selling 2 Brass Snails for $24K/Month

Published April 20, 2023 by Niall Doherty
Gray Randolph tweets about this product for sale on Etsy…
Don’t know what product to sell on etsy?
When in doubt, sell 2 brass snails, (for $48k/month)
Someone replied to that tweet clarifying that the monthly revenue is actually more like $24k/month, because the product seems to offer a perpetual 50% discount.
Still: incredible that 2 brass ornaments weighing 40 grams can generate so much revenue
But, as always, there’s more to the story.
For one thing, it looks like the store (Fanoge) is running ads for this and other products. That’s going to cut into their margins.
Plus, they offer free shipping, apparently from Hong Kong to anywhere in the world
So their profit on each $13 brass ornament has to be miniscule when you take all that and production costs into account.
It might still be a good business, but not as good as tweets or headlines would have you believe

$44K/Month Reviewing Website Builders

Published April 20, 2023 by Niall Doherty
About ten years ago Steve Benjamins tried to build his own website builder to compete with the likes of Wix and Squarespace.
That didn’t work out too well, but it led Steve to his next project…
Unfortunately, the website builder I launched failed. It failed because there were way too many website builders already. No one needed another website builder. What they needed was someone to tell them which website builders were good and which were bad.
So Steve started SiteBuilderReport.com
He knew a bit about website builders from trying to build his own, and learned a ton more from trying out others…
I’ve now written hundreds (seriously) of reviews of website builders and ecommerce software. It’s boring work. But after a couple years of writing reviews, you develop a pretty informed perspective. How many other people on this planet have spent hundreds of hours trying different website builders?
Within a few months of launching the site, Steve was earning $350/month via affiliate links to the best website builders he reviewed.
By 2017 the site had been averaging $44k/month in revenue for a couple of years.
The jump from $350 -> $3,000 was a matter of months. The jump to the $40k was a matter of years.
Zoominfo estimates the site is now earning $5.8 million per year but I doubt it’s that much since traffic is estimated to be only 243k/month.
For reference, my course reviews website earns about $25k/month on ~100k monthly visitors (Similarweb vastly overestimates my traffic).
Best-case scenario, I’d say Steve’s site earns about $100k/month nowadays.
Given that he seems to run the website with just one other person, that’s still epic
Back in 2017, Steve wrote that it had become tougher to start this kind of business…
This was all driven by SEO and unfortunately I think it’s harder for new sites to gain traction in Google these days— so the timeline to $3k would be different today.
I think he’s right about that, but IMO there are still lots of opportunities in the review space.
Is there a category of product or service that you’re passionate about?
If so, chances are you can make a good living as a reviewer in that space if you do two things…
Create better, more helpful reviews than your competitors.Stick with it for the long run.A prime example of this is the guy on YouTube who reviews fast food
He has 2.75 million subscribers and 100’s of supporters on Patreon, so I suspect he’s earning a good living from his work.
(I’ll dive deeper into his story in a future newsletter.)

The Most Important Skill For Getting Rich
From The Almanack of Naval Ravikant…
The most important skill for getting rich is becoming a perpetual learner. You have to know how to learn anything you want to learn. The old model of making money is going to school for four years, getting your degree, and working as a professional for thirty years. But things change fast now. Now, you have to come up to speed on a new profession within nine months, and it’s obsolete four years later. But within those three productive years, you can get very wealthy.
He Went from $500 to Half a Billion in 5 Years

Published April 17, 2023 by Niall Doherty
Davie Fogarty tells his story in a 13-minute YouTube video
Davie got started young and tried (and failed) a lot of business ventures. His first bit of success came via Instagram…
I started an Instagram where I would go into supplement stores and take photos of the supplements and write reviews, what’s good about them. Then I was able to sell advertising on those Instagrams to, you know, fitness tea brands and that kind of stuff.
It started off small, make $5 here, $10 here.
After a while, he was earning “six figures” from his Instagram-based biz
But rather than double down on that, Davie tried to launch a fast food franchise. Which didn’t go so well, and he ended up broke again
His big breakthrough was selling weighted blankets. They were already popular elsewhere but nobody was selling them in Davie’s home country (Australia). So he imported a batch from China and started selling them online.
Key point…
I had so many skills from all of those past failures that I could launch the store from scratch. I could launch the Facebook Ads, launch the Google Ads, I could do everything from scratch. So I really didn’t need any money to get it started. I had about $500 at that stage that I saved up from doing weddings and other videography shoots.
Love that
All Davie’s past failures turned out to be experiences he could leverage to build a bigger, more successful business… to the tune of $1.5 million in profit the first year.
And he was still in his early 20’s at the time
After the weighted blankets Davie came up with an original product called the Oodie, a wearable blanket that took him “from earning millions to tens of millions.”
At the start of the video, Davie talks about a turning point he had in school, when he went from being a poor student to a good student.
The realization that has served him well over the years…
I started to pick up that all greatness was, was just a willingness to work hard and fail.

5 Things Successful Creators Have In Common
Chenell Basilio writes…
I’ve spent over 450 hours researching creators who have built their audience to 50k+ subscribers.
She goes on to break down the 5 things they have in common
Elaborating on #2…
It will take 2-3 years minimum to build a newsletter into a full business.
“But what about Justin Welsh who did it in 8 months?”
Justin was building his audience for years before he even started a newsletter.
Start thinking in terms of years, not weeks.
I’ve noticed that pattern, too.
Any time you see someone who appears to be “an overnight success,” dig deeper and you’ll find that they’d been practicing their craft for years before breaking through.
(Btw, I’ve written about Justin Welsh before. Browse his LinkedIn and you’ll see he was an employee for 15+ years – in increasingly tough roles – before starting his own thing, and he was fired from his first 3 jobs.)
$12K Profit in 1 Month Making Ads for Social Media

Published April 17, 2023 by Niall Doherty
Dave Giovacchini shares on Reddit that he’s 50 years old and recently started a new side hustle…
I make UGC (user generated content) ads for advertisers on social media. Video ads.. short 15, 30 or 60s ads that most look done by an amateur.. (Because they are).
Most easily explained.. the ads you see while scrolling tiktok or Reels. That look like any joe schmo made an ad. The good ones you don’t know IF they are an ad until you see the link…
He started back in October
Then in February…
It grossed over $16k and i took home $12k and change in Feb. from it. My original start up cost was $0.
Apparently he spent 6 hours per day working on this in February, and he reckons you could earn up to $25k/month doing it full-time on your own, in your house and around your neighborhood.
Looks like Dave is mainly getting clients via Fiverr, and you can see some samples of his work on his main job listing here
Back on Reddit, he says that being older than most people you see on social media can be an advantage in this line of work…
I also think there is a large market for people over the age of 30. Since the vast majority of ‘influencers’ trying to make UGC content are young females for beauty and home decor. While the big money advertisers like financial products, insurance, supplements, home improvement, software, apps etc need middle aged or at least over age 30 people as their creators.
Also, it’s not like you need a big following on social media to do this…
I started with ZERO followers and advertisers do not care. They simply want video ads made by real people because they have a MUCH higher conversion rate than high polished ads. They are almost always just used in PAID ad campaigns and not for viral or tiktok account holders followers.
That said, Dave is building up his own following on TikTok, where he posts a lot about the business side of things.
Here’s a behind-the-scenes video of him creating an ad for hot sauce.
Key quote from that…
This is part of the script, dance a weird dance, so here I am. I have no pride or shame.
