10 Hours a Week YouTube, 10 Hours a Week Freelance

Published May 1, 2023 by Niall Doherty
25-year-old Ben Awad has a short video talking about his computer science career path…
After getting a computer science degree he wanted to land a job for a big tech company…
You know: Facebook, Google, the classic move. But ultimately I decided against it, maybe because I got rejected, maybe because I had my own aspirations.
Either way, I started a YouTube channel in college making coding tutorials. I like doing that so I just continue doing that and that also brought me business doing software consulting.
Ben’s YouTube channel now has 480k subscribers
Unclear how much he earns from the channel + consulting, but I suspect he’s cracking at least $70,000 per year
Better yet…
[YouTube and consulting] also gave me time to build startups on the side. The first one I did was a cooking app called Saffron. I basically spent 10 hours a week making YouTube videos, 10 hours a week freelancing, and then the rest of the time working on stuff like that.
[…] as my startups and my YouTube channel have been doing better, I just do less and less consulting and more of the stuff I actually wanna do.
You can check Saffron here. I doubt it earns much money since it only has about 140 ratings overall on the app stores.
But Ben says he “got good” at coding by building that app
His newest project is Voidpet – “a self care pet collection app” – which apparently had 100,000 downloads in 3 weeks…
Anyway, I like Ben’s blueprint and reckon many people could emulate his approach to earning a living online.
It breaks down like this

No-Code GPT App: $15K in First Month

Published May 1, 2023 by Niall Doherty
Here’s another interesting AI business for you: AudioPen
Louis Pereria launched it with a tweet at the end of March…
An app that converts your voice notes into concisely summarized text.
No more filler words, repeated sentences, and unnecessary ‘umms’ […] It’s like having a personal assistant who summarizes and types out your thoughts.
A month later, he announced 543 paying customers
As of this writing, AudioPen’s pricing is $39 per year or $79 for lifetime access. But Louis started out with a $19 lifetime deal, which helped it gain traction.
I’m not sure what his overall revenue is so far, but I’m guessing around $15,000
What makes it even more impressive is that Louis seems to have built the first version in about a week, as detailed in this thread.
He used the no-code tool Bubble and OpenAI.
Louis used the same tools to build “a fun little cocktail recipe tool in 60 minutes.”
I reckon there’s lots of opportunity to create products like this on top of GPT, especially with no-code tools like Bubble.
Someone asked if they could upload audio files to AudioPen, and Louis responded…
Unfortunately, no. I’ve designed it specifically to work for live voice notes.
Might add that feature in the future, but don’t want to lose focus at the moment.
So right there is a product idea
A good target market might be podcasters. Let them upload the audio of an episode, then give them back a transcription and a nicely formatted summary of the key points to post to their website.
Another tweet from Louis, posted a few weeks after launching AudioPen…
Something I learned from my uncle – if you have momentum, don’t stop.
So screw work-life balance for the foreseeable future.
I’m going to just keep going.

Can You Start Freelancing With No Job Experience?
I often recommend freelancing as the best way (for most people) to start earning a living online
And the easiest way to start freelancing is to leverage the skills you used in your last job.
For example, my last job was as a web designer for a university.
When I quit and started working for myself, freelance web design became my bread and butter for many years
But what if you don’t have job experience? What if you’re self-taught and don’t have any references or job history to show prospective clients you know your stuff?
Someone asked that very question on Reddit recently and got some good responses
I like this advice…
I’ve been doing freelancing for almost 8 years now. I never had an office job. In freelancing, your skills matter more than your past experience. Most people who hire freelancers care about their work more than experience. If you can do what they ask you to do, they won’t have any problem hiring you.
[…] charge a bit less than the market rates in the beginning. Focus on projects more than money. Many people are against this advice but this worked for me. Once I started getting orders and had some portfolio, I started increasing my prices slowly.
Also, a good way to land your first clients and start building a portfolio is via The Billboard Method that I outline in this article/video

Not Everything Is A Competition
Words from Daniel Pink’s book, To Sell Is Human…
Use your thumbs.
This is a group activity that you can use to make a memorable point. Along with yourself, you’ll need at least two more people as participants. Have everyone assemble themselves into pairs. Then ask each pair to “hook the fingers of your right hands and raise your thumbs.” Then, give the sole instruction: “Now get your partner’s thumb down.” Remain silent and allow the pairs to finish the task.
Most participants will assume that your instructions mean for them to thumb-wrestle. However, there are many other ways that they could get their partner’s thumb down. They could ask nicely. They could unhook their own fingers and put their own thumb down. And so on.
The lesson here is that too often our starting point is competition—a win-lose, zero-sum approach rather than the win-win, positive-sum approach of improvisation. In most circumstances that involve moving others, we have several ways to accomplish a task, most of which can make our partners look good in the process.
Who are the competitors in your space?
Instead of trying to beat them, is there a way you can team up with them and find a win-win?
$258K Selling His Dream Saucepan

Published April 27, 2023 by Niall Doherty
Colin Landforce tweets…
This dude has a cooking channel with 2M subs.
A couple days ago he dropped his own sauce pan.
Sold out 750 units @ $345 a pop.
$258k
The dude is Alex Aïnouz, also known as FrenchGuyCooking on YouTube
He’s posted 400+ videos, has 2 million subscribers and 200 million video views, but he started 10 years ago with this simple 3-minute omelet video…
Here’s Alex’s recent video announcing the saucepan, which was apparently 2 years in the making …
Interesting to note the different ways he’s monetizing the channel.
Obviously he’s now making money selling a physical product, but he also earns via…
Video SponsorsAthletic Greens is the sponsor of the saucepan video, and I’m guessing – based on some quick googling – that Alex earns around $5000 per video for that kind of thing.YouTube Ads
Social Blade estimates the channel earns as much as $9,600 per month in YouTube ad revenue. But it’s probably about half that.Patreon
Alex has 800 patrons paying him a total of $2,282 per month.Cookbook
He sells a cookbook on Amazon, with more than 1000 ratings.Merch
Posters, t-shirts, mugs, hoodies, etc. sold here.Affiliate Marketing
Alex has affiliate links to stock audio/video sites in his video descriptions.
Goes to show how many ways you can make money once you build up a strong following online
I expect Alex earns at least $50,000 per month from all those income streams combined.
And it all started with that 3-minute omelet video

$690,186 From A Handful of Tumblr Themes

Published April 27, 2023 by Niall Doherty
In an 11-minute video, Oliur Reddy tells the story of how he made his first million in his 20’s
He started off as a freelance web designer as a 21-year-old while living at home with his parents.
Around 2014 he started making and selling themes for a microblogging platform called Tumblr…
Back then it was very popular, a lot of people were using it… businesses had their own presence on Tumblr… Instagram, TikTok, Twitter, these are the current platforms. Back then Tumblr was one of those platforms everyone used
Oliur had his own Tumblr blog and learned how to customize it. Then he made a collection of Tumblr themes – “Tumblr themes were very easy to make, they still are easy to make” – and started selling them on the Tumblr theme marketplace.
At the 5:20 mark of his video Oliur shows that those themes earned him $690,186 over the next 7 years or so
About $250k of that came in the first year, when Oliur was still in his early 20’s.
Looks like his themes are no longer available, but here’s the archived listing page for his UltraGrid theme.
Oliur continued taking on freelance web design gigs through the years, including one mega project in 2017…
This project had a budget of $200,000 which I just thought was insane. But it made sense because it was a very very large project and it was spread out over a year… it was for a billion dollar company
Through his freelance work and the Tumblr themes, Oliur had made his first $1 million by about the age of 25
He says luck had a lot to do with his success, as he was in the right place at the right time to make a killing with Tumblr themes…
I don’t know what the right skill is now, I don’t know what the right thing is now… [but] I think that anything related with technology or the internet is just a good way to get lucky

24-Year-Old Earning $10K/Month With ChatGPT Product

Published April 27, 2023 by Niall Doherty
The Twitter bio for Bhanu Teja Pachipulusu…
24yo indie maker. I quit my software dev job to make it as an independent maker.
Bhanu is from India
In 2019, he graduated from university with a degree in computer science and engineering and landed a job as a software dev, earning about $2050/month.
Bhanu quit that job within a year to launch a startup with a friend. They worked on it for 14 months and earned $0
Then Bhanu turned to freelancing and earned $17,000 within a couple of months
Despite that success, he never gave up on building his own thing.
He created a “Notion to Blog” software called Feather.so that is now earning him about $4000/month.
But that’s nothing compared to the product Bhanu launched a few weeks back…
Almost there at $10k MRR with SiteGPT.ai
It hasn’t been a month yet…
[…] My year end goal was $10k MRR, now my goal is $25k
SiteGPT is a “personalized chatbot trained on your website content”
Visitors to your site can type in a question and ChatGPT will reply back, but only using your site content as reference material.
Seems to work well, and looks especially useful for sites with tons of content.
In terms of marketing, I get the impression that Bhanu’s main weapon has been building in public. He’s quite active on Twitter and had about 10k followers there at the start of the year.
That audience helped him spread the word about SiteGPT when he launched
My launch tweet on Twitter went viral.
My product got on the first page of Hacker News for several hours.
My product became the #1 product of the day on ProductHunt.
Other key factors in Bhanu’s success, in my opinion…
He’s clearly become a skilled software engineer. He’s worked his ass off on this product. The AI craze is real. The latter means that good products in the space don’t need much of a push to go viral
As Sahil Lavingia (CEO of Gumroad) once said…
The market you’re in will determine most of your growth.

The Valley of Disappointment
James Clear has a graph in his book Atomic Habits that you can see here.
The caption for the graph…
We often expect progress to be linear. At the very least, we hope it will come quickly. In reality, the results of our efforts are often delayed. It is not until months or years later that we realize the true value of the previous work we have done.
This can result in a “valley of disappointment” where people feel discouraged after putting in weeks or months of hard work without experiencing any results. However, this work was not wasted. It was simply being stored. It is not until much later that the full value of previous efforts is revealed.
If you’re not making as much progress as you’d like, you may well be traveling through the valley of disappointment.
In which case, keep going!
How ChatGPT Actually Works
The rapid progression of AI tools like ChatGPT can feel overwhelming and a bit scary
So here are a couple of things that might help put your mind at ease.
The first is a recent New Yorker article by Cal Newport…
What Kind of Mind Does ChatGPT Have?He covered the same ground on his podcast.
Here’s the YouTube version…
Cal is a computer scientist, and his article breaks down how ChatGPT actually works, without getting too technical.
He writes…
once we’ve taken the time to open up the black box and poke around the springs and gears found inside, we discover that programs like ChatGPT don’t represent an alien intelligence with which we must now learn to coexist; instead, they turn out to run on the well-worn digital logic of pattern-matching, pushed to a radically larger scale.
So ChatGPT is essentially a ton of computing power that has been trained on tons of data. And it does a very good imitation of being intelligent mainly by “predicting useful words to output next”
A commenter on Cal’s YouTube video quotes Marie Curie…
Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood. Now is the time to understand more, so that we may fear less.
The second thing here is a recent video by Casey Neistat.
Casey is a popular YouTuber who asked ChatGPT to write a video script in his usual style then went and created the video shot-for-shot and word-for-word.
The result…
AI Made this VLOG…Casey shares his take near the end…
That was the worst video I’ve ever made. That video sucked. And it sucked because it had no humanity, it had no depth to it, no soul to it.
[…] in GPT-4’s defense… I could have gone deeper with the prompts and perhaps it could have faked having a soul a little bit more. But, as it stands now, it felt robotic, it felt basic, it felt like a photocopy of a photocopy of a photocopy of something that maybe was good.
This College Lacrosse Player Earned $215K Online in 12 Months

Published April 24, 2023 by Niall Doherty
Mitchell Pehlke is a division 1 lacrosse player at Ohio State University
He’s been a youtuber since 2016 and had started making money from his small channel.
He says in a video from June 2022…
In 2018 I made $883.11.
In 2019 I made $555.17, half the year got cut off because I got to Ohio State.
In 2020 I made $0.
See, there was a rule in the USA that forbade college athletes from monetizing their “name, image, or likeness”
So, for Mitchell…
The day I stepped on Ohio State’s campus… I had to demonetize my whole channel and stop selling merch because I was a college athlete.
But midway through 2022, the rule changed
Suddenly Mitchell and all other college athletes in the USA were allowed to make money from their own name, image, and likeness.
Over the next 12 months, Mitchell earned about $15,000 from ads on his YouTube channel, which now has 55k subscribers.
But that was just a small fraction of his income.
He says in the same video…
brand deals and paid content, this is where myself and other creators make a bulk of their money.
… I’ve done brand deals and paid content with The Cheesecake Factory, IHOP, Degree deodorant, STX lacrosse company, Jason shampoo, Rowdy energy drinks and Opendorse.
I can’t say the exact amount of money i made with these companies because of the contracts I’ve signed, but I can say it’s a little bit over two $200,000.
That’s about $30,000 per brand deal
A couple of Mitchell’s brand deal videos…
STX, mentioned at the 5:45 mark of this YouTube video… Cheesecake Factory ad on his TikTok (95k followers there)Pretty cool that college athletes can now earn money that way.
Though it does sound like a lot of work: Mitchell produces mucho content on top of being a D1 athlete and attending classes.
I’m thinking there must be an opportunity there for an agency to do the video editing and manage the online presence of these athletes
Opendorse – one of Mitchell’s sponsors – is also interesting, like Cameo but niched down for college athletes = another way for people like Mitchell to monetize.
Lastly, in that first video from Mitchell linked above, he shares a clip from YouTubers Colin and Samir talking about ad revenue…
There’s so many reasons why you can’t predict how much money you’ll actually make from a video. And some of those reasons have to do with the seasonality of when you uploaded the video. Meaning certain seasons carry higher ad rates based on how advertisers are purchasing.
Like the holiday season, November and December are a great time to make a really good YouTube video because the ad rates are really high. So many people are advertising on YouTube [at that time] to try and get you to buy their products.
So if you’ve got a really good video idea, save it for November / December.
