Hey, I’m Niall Doherty.
I quit my last 9-to-5 job back in 2010.
Since then, I’ve earned my living online in various ways. Over the last 3 years (through 2022) I’ve earned $536,000 from my laptop.
I’m on a mission to accurately rate and review all the best online business courses. My team and I are spending many hours investigating these courses and getting feedback from real students.
All that to say: we know a thing or two about such courses and making money online.
The Best YouTube Course? We’re on a mission to find the best YouTube course, based on feedback from real students combined with our own extensive research.
Unfortunately, Bye 9 To 5 doesn’t quite make the top of our list…

How does Bye 9 To 5 help you make money?
The main goal of Jordan Mackey’s training is to help you earn money from YouTube without showing your face. So the idea is to create, monetize and automate a faceless YouTube channel.
YouTube automation is when you utilize software or hire people to automate specific tasks related to managing a YouTube channel. The most common examples are uploading videos, managing comments, creating video thumbnails, and scheduling content.
Jordan advises that your YouTube channel focus on a single niche and adheres to one of four channel types…
List ChannelsUsually feature Top 5 or Top 10 lists. Tough to monetize these channels with affiliate marketing or sponsorships, but you can earn ad revenue and eventually sell the channel.
Personal Brand
This kind of channel gains more trust, and is therefore more suitable for selling or promoting products. However, it’s harder to choose adequate topics with them or post often.
Combination
You can combine the previous two and have the best of both worlds. You wouldn’t have to show your face, yet you can still pick viral topics and sell products.
Compilations / Reposted Content
These are easy to pick topics and pump content for, but it’s hard to get and keep them monetized. You’d basically download multiple YouTube videos and combine them into a single video to avoid copyright strikes.
Out of the four types, Jordan’s training seems to focus on compilations the most, giving many tips on how to edit existing videos with free software and stitch clips together.
As stated on the sales page…
The systematic roadmap is simple – all you need to do is find interesting videos, mash them together, make small tweaks, upload it, and use the correct title, thumbnail, keywords, and other algorithm secrets and do it the right way. If you do that, you crush it on YouTube over and over again.
This seems to work well for some students, but I’ve also seen many in the private Facebook group voicing their complaints/concerns about copyright strikes.
For example…

So be aware of that risk if you’re going to follow Jordan’s recommendations. It’s also worth familiarizing yourself with YouTube’s fair use policy. Though from what I’ve seen, YouTube’s fair use and copyright rules do not seem to be applied consistently
To make money with your YouTube channel, you will first need to get it monetized so you can put ads on your videos.
Jordan further explains on the sales page…
[…] you need to learn the secrets for crushing the YouTube algorithm, how to make your videos go viral, how to rank your videos in the search results, how to make YouTube suggest your videos, how to create engaging thumbnails, how to pass monetization review quickly, how to study your analytics and make necessary changes, the secret to earning 10 times more money than other YouTube channels, how to raise your CPM, how to place the ads on your video, how to automate, outsource, and scale your channels, and much more.
Many of these things are simple, but doing them all correctly in the right order makes all of the difference between a channel that makes an absolute killing, and a channel that makes nothing.
It looks like Bye 9 To 5 previously used to revolve around Shopify dropshipping and personal branding. Now those courses are just bonuses added on to the main YouTube training, but they seem to be long abandoned.
The video materials inside of the Shopify dropshipping course suggest it was filmed in late 2017 and hasn’t been updated since.
So I’d advise against following Jordan’s recommendations in those older bonus courses.
Learn more about making money on YouTubeWho is Bye 9 To 5 for?Bye 9 To 5 sells itself as a platform for people from all walks of life that would like to make money via YouTube…
The best part about this program is that it is built for both beginners and advanced YouTube channel creators! We cover everything step-by-step A-Z, from creating your GMail account and YouTube channel to all of the advanced strategies and techniques.
Having seen inside the training, I tend to agree.
But given that automation is a key part of the training, it helps if you have some experience with outsourcing tasks and building a team. IMO, that’s the part of the training that most people are likely to struggle with.
70+ ways how to make money online (including easy options)Does Jordan Mackey have a good reputation? It’s complicated.
First of all, even though Bye 9 To 5 is primarily a YouTube course, Jordan’s official Instagram profile has twice as many followers/subscribers as his YouTube channel…

So that’s a bit weird.
But apparently Jordan owns much bigger YouTube channels as well.
He mentions numerous times in his videos that he has grown a channel to more than one million subscribers.
Here’s one video where he does that (around the 30-second mark)…
However, I never managed to find that channel, and Jordan clearly doesn’t want people to find it…

Jordan apparently has at least 2 more channels with 100,000+ subscribers.
And while his reasoning for keeping these channels secret makes some sense, IMO it makes it harder to trust him and verify that he walks his talk.
Moving on, a YouTuber named Scott Shafer has a video criticizing Jordan Mackey and accusing him of being a “fake guru”…
Some of Scott’s criticisms seem silly to me – eg. Jordan shooting a video in an empty room or sounding nervous on camera. But from the 8:30 to 14:00 mark he outright accuses Jordan of lying about his YouTube earnings in 2017.
Jordan posted a video response to Scott’s criticism, showing right away that he did indeed earn $60,000+ from YouTube – or at least from Google – that year…
Scott responded to that response by pointing out some more holes and oddities in Jordan’s story…
The back and forth is all quite messy and confusing, but to me the part that stands out most is at the 14-minute mark of Jordan’s video, where he says…
If something ever happened to me like did happen in 2017, where all five of my [YouTube] channels or my Adsense account gets screwed for some reason, gets deleted, instead of having zero income now I will have courses as an income at least.
Jordan is admitting there that he’s had multiple YouTube channels deleted. And it sounds like one of the main reasons he sells his course is because he’s concerned that his YouTube channels might get deleted again in future
Scott addresses this at the 12-minute mark of his second video…
I don’t know why anyone would take advice from someone who is constantly getting his channels deleted. No legitimate YouTuber has their channels deleted unless they’re doing something illegal or going against YouTube’s terms of service.
I tend to agree with Scott on this point, and it is an important point.
Personally I would be hesitant to learn YouTube automation from a guy who has had multiple channels deleted and seems concerned that it can happen to him again at any moment.
Are Bye 9 To 5 students getting results?Browse through the official Bye 9 To 5 websites – and the private Facebook group – and you’ll find a decent amount of student testimonials and success stories.
For example…

However, when I dug a little deeper it became apparent that many of those successful students have had channels deleted and demonetized multiple times…

My impression from all this is that Jordan’s training can be effective, but a lot of his students seem to run into trouble with YouTube and get their channels deleted or demonetized.
So just be aware of that risk if you sign up to Bye 9 to 5 and try to implement the training.
How much does Bye 9 To 5 cost? For access to the Bye 9 To 5 training, there are two options:
$397 one-time3 monthly payments of $165The latter adds up to a total price of $495.
You get lifetime access with either option.
In terms of additional costs, Jordan often recommends paid software, as well as outsourcing lots of the day-to-day tasks, in order to scale your YouTube automation business. You can of course use the free software he recommends and do all the work yourself, but expect slower progress that way.
Other than outsourcing tasks – for which Jordan recommends using Fiverr and Upwork – here are the main additional costs (again, these are all optional)…
Monetized channel – starting at around $200 per 1000 subscribersYou can buy an already monetized channel to avoid monetization reviews
Pro VID IQ plan – starting at $7.50/month
VID IQ helps with keyword research to boost your channel faster.
Video Marketing Suite – $47/month
Keyword research tool made specifically for Bye 9 To 5 students.
Viddyoze – free 7-day trial, then $47/month
Video editing software.
Thumbnail Blaster – $36.86
Video thumbnail design software
Temi and Rev – starting at $0.25 per minute
Video transcription services. Pricing (and quality) depends on whether you opt for AI or human transcription.
Domain and hosting for a website
Jordan recommends GoDaddy for both a domain (starting at $0.99) and hosting (starting at $5.99/month). You’d mainly use the website for affiliate marketing off of YouTube.Bye 9 To 5 Discount?
I’ve searched high and low for a discount or coupon code for Bye 9 To 5, but have yet to find mention of one anywhere. However, there is a place to enter a discount code on the Bye 9 To 5 checkout.
So it looks like you’ll have to pay the full price if you want access.
Refund PolicyThe sales page for Bye 9 To 5 specifies a 120-day action-based money-back guarantee…
[…] we are giving you a full 120 days to watch the training and try out what you learn, and if you don’t make the money back you spent on this course we will refund your money 100% as long as it’s within 120 days. This is action based, meaning you must take action and show us you’ve taken action. First, You must watch through every video in the program in its’ entirety. You must show us your course work, which includes: your niche research, keyword research, and video topic research, you must create a channel and create and upload at least 60 videos that follow what we teach, and you must prove to us that you fully implemented the system taught in the program and you didn’t at least make back the money you spent on the course.
I’m not a fan of action-based refund policies, and would much rather see a no-questions-asked policy here.
And given that they require you to have created and uploaded “at least 60 videos” in 120 days, it sounds like it’s really hard to qualify for a refund
That said, I’ve yet to see anyone reporting issues getting a refund on their purchase of Bye 9 to 5.
How is Bye 9 To 5 structured? Here’s what the training looks like once you log in and open one of the lessons…

The core Bye 9 To 5 training, called Tube Monetization & Automation Program, is broken up into 15 modules that have 110+ video lessons. I found the videos rather concise and easy to follow.
Most of the videos are slides and/or screencasts where Jordan walks you through the training.
Although I find Jordan’s approach to YouTube somewhat questionable, the training looks comprehensive enough. You’ll learn a lot about YouTube itself and creating YouTube content, as well as SEO and affiliate marketing.
It’s unclear how often the core training is actually updated.
Bye 9 To 5 also has the occasional bonus PDF file here and there, as well as a few bonus courses. Some of the bonus courses are obsolete – eg. the Shopify Dropshipping Course was filmed in late 2017 – but were apparently included due to demand from Jordan’s students.
Here are the bonuses I saw available within the training…
Mastermind Webinar ReplaysReplays of Jordan’s past webinars.
Tube Made Easy
Jordan’s older YouTube automation course. Mostly focuses on repurposing content.
Affiliate Marketing on YouTube
Additional training on affiliate marketing via YouTube. Some of the lessons are also featured in the core training.
Shopify Dropshipping Course
Covers setting up a Shopify account and store, as well as Facebook ads. But again, this training is quite old and outdated now.
Personal Branding Course
Old training on selling courses on Udemy and Teachable.
Finally, there’s a private Facebook community for Bye 9 To 5 students that has 6000+ members. Inside you’ll find success stories and student questions, but also many new students just saying hi.
Honestly though I expected to see more activity for a group with so many members…

Browsing through the group myself, I also saw quite a few posts and comments from students that didn’t receive any replies from Jordan or his group admins

A few things to like about Bye 9 To 5…
Some impressive success stories.Good budget option if you use free software and don’t outsource.Comprehensive core training. Also teaches some SEO and affiliate marketing. Most students seem to rate the course highly.Red Flags
A few things to be wary of regarding Bye 9 To 5…
Seems the core training is rarely updated.Jordan Mackey and his methods are somewhat controversial.Claims YouTube automation is an easy way to make money online.Quite a few students have had their YouTube accounts deleted or demonetized.Private Facebook group not as active or helpful as expected.Sounds really difficult to qualify for a refund.Other things you should knowThere is also what Jordan claims to be a free version of the training, but it’s actually just a single, long video. It’s mostly filled with testimonials – some of which are shown multiple times – various paychecks, and just a glimpse at what you’d do as a student. Keep in mind, however, that the free video doesn’t seem to teach you about content creation, which is crucial to the YouTube automation process.👇 Subscribe to eBiz Insider 👇Every Tuesday and Friday we email 29,769 people like you with top tips, insights and opportunities to build your online business. Should you join Bye 9 To 5?
I’m a bit torn on this one.
If your goal is to build a successful faceless YouTube channel, then you’ll likely get a lot out of the Bye 9 to 5 training.
However, IMO the methods Jordan teaches are a bit risky, and it’s clear that quite a few of his students run into issues with copyright strikes, or getting their channels deleted or demonetized.
Given that, I’d advise carefully reading up on YouTube’s guidelines and terms of service before following any of the recommendations within Jordan’s training.
Then, abide by the wisdom of Bruce Lee…

Profession, Obsession, Decompression

Published April 6, 2023 by Niall Doherty
This is a framework by Jodie Cook, as explained in a talk she gave last year: How to actually get stuff done…
For context, Jodie…
Started a digital marketing agency at 22 years old (2011)Sold it for 7 figures in 2021Competes in powerlifting for Great Britain
At the 9-minute mark of her talk, Jodie says there are only 3 things that should be in your life…
Profession = Your main work, specifically things that can’t be outsourced.
Obsession = Something outside of your work that puts you in a state of flow. For Jodie, this is powerlifting.
Decompression = Intentionally switching off and recharging. Think meditation, spending time with friends or family, or anything that helps you unwind.
The key, according to Jodie, is to keep these three categories distinct and separate…
Flitting between profession, obsession and decompression is not the plan… everyone loses when we multitask and we need to stop doing it. Multitasking is for losers.
This framework can be a good way to think about your own life and how you spend your time.
Are you doing too much or too little in any of the categories?

English Teacher’s $55,000/Month Software Business

Published April 6, 2023 by Niall Doherty
Arvid Kahl writes about building and selling a successful software business…
In 2017, my partner Danielle was teaching English as a Second Language online to Chinese children. She was working 12-hour days teaching while I was working as a Software Engineer for a German company in the IoT space.
After teaching, Danielle would work for two extra hours to write Student Feedback for the parents of the kids she had taught that day. Two hours of unpaid work that consisted of writing the same things over and over again.
Fed up with all that repetitive, unpaid work, Arvid and Danielle wondered if they could build “a little software tool” to make things easier
They came up with a tool called FeedbackPanda. You can see an old version of the homepage here.
Danielle’s description of it…
The tool saves teachers about two hours of unpaid time per day by helping them organize student and course records and write personalized feedback for students. Teachers can also use FeedbackPanda to collaborate and share their feedback templates to inspire each other.
Pricing was only $10/month or $110/year.
Within two years, Danielle and Arvid built the business to an incredible $55,000 in monthly recurring revenue
And then…
… we sold the bootstrapped company that grew out of that tool to SureSwift Capital for a life-changing amount of money.
This story is a good reminder to keep an eye out for problems in your current line of work. Danielle had a big problem in her teaching job, which she turned into a big opportunity
She was able to solve her own problem and leverage her existing network – ie. other teachers – to get helpful feedback land their first customers.
How could you do something similar?

She Earned $9,544 Last Month as a VA for Influencers

Published April 6, 2023 by Niall Doherty
Kate Christine posted on YouTube last September that she had earned $6000 in one month as a virtual assistant for influencers
She had 4 main clients and was charging them $25-30 per hour for tasks like…
Daily posting on LTK and Amazon storefrontWriting blog postsCreating graphics (in Photoshop or Canva)Posting to TikTok and responding to commentsWeekly newsletter creationPosting to PinterestAnd yes, Kate was working a lot to earn $6,000 in one month, about 60 hours per week
But she much prefers her VA work to what she was doing before…
I was a corporate employee for a marketing agency and really did not like it… each paycheck was like $1400 in my corporate job so I have definitely surpassed that [as a virtual assistant].
Sounds like Kate is mostly self-taught as a VA…
I have about three years of experience in this and I have a business management degree. But honestly the degree did nothing to help me in what I am doing [now].
Kate posted another video to YouTube a few days ago, announcing that her business pulled in $9544 last month, a new personal best
The vast majority of her revenue still seems to come from direct client work, but Kate has started to transition into more of a VA agency by outsourcing some tasks to other contractors.
She also launched her own VA course and has made a few sales of that already.
I love the path Kate is on here
She’s a great example of the progression I usually recommend to people new to making money online…
Start with freelancing or a remote jobAs you gain experience, increase your rate

Kate is investing a good chunk of her free time finding and training talent she can outsource to (agency business), and creating her own course (digital products business).
Re: finding clients for her VA business, Kate recommends you do the same thing that has worked well for her…
Besides referrals, I have gotten every single one of my clients by emailing them directly. It is the best way to get in contact with them, because they check their email everyday.
She has a blog post and video with more details on this approach, including an email template you can use for your own pitches

$1000/Month Website About Costco Hot Dogs?

Published April 3, 2023 by Niall Doherty
CostcoHotdog.com is one of the stranger websites I’ve seen in a while.
The header reads…
THE GREATEST HOTDOG EVER
AN ODE TO THE COSTCO HOTDOG
Looks like it was started in 2012 and only has a handful of articles, the most recent from 2017. It’s monetized with display ads
Spencer Haws tweeted that the site gets 101,000 visitors from search engines each month (according to Ahrefs).
A response to that tweet…
I assume RPM is low but probably does about $1k/month
Could be more than that, given that Ubersuggest pegs their organic traffic at 374k/month
And it could be less, given that SimilarWeb estimates their total traffic at 49k/month
But it’s probably safe to say that it’s earning at least a few $100 per month… despite being a tiny website about Costco hotdogs that hasn’t been updated for 6 years
Doesn’t look like the toughest site to compete with either, so if you’re a fan of Costco’s hotdogs it might be worth quickly spinning up your own website on the topic.
But try not to use Costco in the domain. As a few responders to Spencer’s tweet pointed out, using someone else’s brand name like that is just asking for trouble

25-Year-Old Substacker Earning $500,000/Year

Published April 3, 2023 by Niall Doherty
Edwin Dorsey tweets…
Launching a Substack changed my life. After three years:
~1,100 paid subscribers
~40,000 free subscribers
~$500k ARR
Edwin’s Substack newsletter is called The Bear Cave.
One testimonial for it reads…
The Bear Cave exposes fraud through a mixture of investigative reporting, financial analysis and qualitative research. The best newsletter for short ideas and corporate wrongdoing.
Free subscribers get 4 emails a month and paid subscribers get an extra 2. The paid tier costs $44/month or $440/year.
Incredibly, Edwin was only 21 or 22 years old when he launched the newsletter in early 2020
But as he revealed in an interview later that year, he’d long been obsessed with his subject matter…
Dorsey got hooked on investing in elementary school, when his grandmother put some money for him into an E-Trade account. “I honestly think if you asked me in third grade what I wanted to be, I would have said investor.” He started writing for stock-research platform Seeking Alpha as a teenager and “cold-emailed so many people,” trying to set up meetings.
(FYI, third graders are usually ~9 years old.)
Still pretty incredible that someone so young has done so well in this line of work.
Seems Edwin’s choice of niche has a lot to do with that.
He writes…
Do something UNIQUE. You want to be the only person who does what you do. Build a personal monopoly. No one wants more email, so you need something unique and differentiated to make it work
Internet niches are bigger than you think […] Passionate about agricultural tech? European bonds? Fine wines? Women’s Soccer? Each of these would work if you’re passionate and dominate it
The thing is, I’m not sure Edwin’s newsletter is all that unique. At first I thought it was basically a newsletter version of the Coffeezilla YouTube channel.
That may or may not be true, but it has me thinking: there are probably a bunch of popular YouTube channels that you could do a newsletter version of, or vice versa.
More generally, do you see something working in one format that might work well in another?

Infinitely More Important Than Your Actual Ability
Morning Brew is mainly a newsletter business that did $36 million in revenue the first half of last year
A guy named Toby Howell hosts MB’s daily podcast, but he started off doing social media for the company.
Toby writes…
During my time running the Brew’s Twitter account, GameStop mania happened. It was one of the craziest periods in financial history and I was in control of the Twitter account of one of the fastest-growing business media brands in the world…
By the time the dust had settled, I had grown the account by nearly 45,000 followers in a single month and over 270,000 in less than 18 months.
I had risen to the top of my field and was considered an expert at running and growing brand accounts. I went on podcasts. I had job offers left and right…
Toby argues in the same article that it wasn’t so much his ability that led to that success, but his being in the right place at the right time…
Daniel Negreanu, widely considered to be the best poker player in the world, recently explained this concept:
“Good is relative. You could be the seventh-best player in the whole world. But if you’re playing with the other six, you’re the sucker.”
In other words, where you sit down to play is infinitely more important than your actual ability. If you can nail your game selection, you’ll be incredibly successful in whatever game you choose to play.
This makes me think of all the opportunities available to entrepreneurial people who live in small countries or cities.
It’s hard to be one of the best web developers or podcasters (or whatever) in London or the United States. Not so hard to be one of the best – or even the best – in places like Slovenia or Edmond, Oklahoma.
Clients and customers prefer a local hero, too
As Simon Sinek writes in the book Start With Why…
Given the choice between two babysitters, we’re more likely to trust a babysitter with a little experience from the neighborhood than one with lots of experience from far away.
$42,000/Month Building Websites For Churches

Published April 3, 2023 by Niall Doherty
Tag line for The Church Co…
Built-for-you websites designed to grow your church.
Our goal is that more people visit your church and we’re using websites to make that happen.
Founder Paul Cox wrote in September 2019…
We are 27 months into taking payments at The Church Co. It took 22 months to get to $10k and just 5 months later we are at $15k.
So apparently they started around mid-2017.
Paul’s update from November 2020…
It’s safe to say that this idea has been validated now. We have 1000 customers and $42k MRR.
Soon after that, he stopped sharing revenue numbers
See here for The Church Co’s pricing options. They charge $0 for setup so long as you sign a 1-year contract for one of their monthly payment plans, which range from $29-199 per month.
Brett Williams uses a similar model for DesignJoy – which apparently pulls in $40k+ per week – and reckons there’s a lot more room for this kind of thing in the web design space…
1. Pick a niche (gyms) and develop ~5 solid web templates.
2. Charge $0 setup fee and personalize the site accordingly.
3. Charge $99/m maintenance plan after that.
Extremely attractive offer for client, with long-term recurring revenue for yourself.
That does sound like an extremely attractive offer, but I’d still argue that the hard part is finding people to take you up on it.
A couple of years into building The Church Co, Paul Cox stumbled upon a customer acquisition channel that led to 38 customers aka the “largest amount of growth we have seen in a single month”…
We found an instagram account with a 50k following of Church Creatives. Church Creatives are mostly responsible for their church’s website. The ad cost us $300 and we ran it in July and August…
This $300 ad seems to have hit our exact target audience and is proving to be our best investment.

Zero to Employed Software Developer in 18 Months

Published April 3, 2023 by Niall Doherty
Codecademy has a short interview with a software developer named Rachel in the United Kingdom
Rachel started out with no coding experience…
I decided to just go for it and started learning February 2020, as I was considering my career options and decided it was time for a change…
I managed to get myself a job as an Apprentice Software Developer after just six months of using Codecademy Pro.
According to Glassdoor, the average annual salary for an apprentice software developer in the UK is £22,000.
That works out to $27,150 USD, which is about $2,260 per month
Best I can tell, it took Rachel ~18 months total to go from no coding experience to landing her job as a software dev and earning that kind of salary. And it looks like she was working full-time in her old career while learning to code.
Pretty impressive
No idea if her job is remote or not, but the salaries for remote vs non-remote jobs are essentially the same nowadays.
Plus, software development is the kind of skill that you can use to freelance, land a remote job, or build your own software business.
So with that single 18-month stretch, Rachel was able to change career and significantly increase her future earning power
Rachel’s advice to new coders…
Don’t be scared to jump in. It’s not as complicated as it looks.
There’ll be a few bumps where you come across a concept that just won’t click at first, but you’ll get there — the satisfaction when it all suddenly makes sense is so worth it!
Don’t get too caught up in the ‘best’ language or place to start either. If you can learn one language, then those skills are very much transferable — speaking as someone who has been bounced around between a lot of different languages over the last year!
