Hey, I’m Niall Doherty.

I quit my last 9-to-5 job back in 2010.

Since then, I’ve earned my living online in various ways. Over the last 3 years (through 2022) I’ve earned $536,000 from my laptop.

I’m on a mission to accurately rate and review all the best online business courses. My team and I are spending many hours investigating these courses and getting feedback from real students.

All that to say: we know a thing or two about such courses and making money online.

The Best Digital Products Course?

We’re on a mission to find the best digital products course, based on our own extensive research plus feedback from real students.

Startup Society is a solid program but not the best we’ve seen…

How does Startup Society help you make money?

Startup Society aims to help you start a profitable online business by creating and selling your own digital product or service.

Example of a digital product:

A copywriter who decides to teach students how to make more sales with writing. Rather than teaching everyone individually, they might create a copywriting course. That way, they can record it once and sell it repeatedly.

Example of a digital product service:

A fitness instructor’s students get better results via real-time guidance. So the instructor creates an online coaching program. Here, they could exercise with and train a group of students over Zoom in exchange for a monthly coaching fee.

Learn more about making money with digital productsWho is Startup Society for?

Startup Society is an action-oriented training, coaching, and community.

Rather than learning theory, the emphasis is on action taking and applying what you learn.

The course targets motivated beginner to intermediate entrepreneurs.

However, entrepreneurs with up to 3 years of experience earning under $150k/year can still find value.

The types of people who are likely to benefit include…

BloggersCoachesFreelancersCourse creatorsCopywriters

And here’s the official word…

These steps include completing templates, worksheets, and to-do lists.

Here’s a screenshot of the 13 action plans…

Some knocks on Startup Society…

And 12 strategy sessions cost $1,000 one time.In addition to the core training, there are plenty of bonus videos and resources. To prevent distractions and increase your likelihood of taking action and getting results, you may want to concentrate only on the main action plans first. You’ll find lots of handy downloads within Startup Society.👇 Subscribe to eBiz Insider 👇

How To Start An Automation Consulting Business

I’ve featured some automation consultants in this newsletter before…

Sami Abid: $6K/Month Automation ManagerAndrew Davison: $6500/Month Helping People Use Zapier

Now with ChatGPT so powerful and readily available, I reckon there’s more opportunity than ever to succeed with this kind of business.

In a 19-minute video Sam Matla breaks down exactly how to build an automation consulting business 😎

From Sam’s tweet thread on the same topic…

You can learn this skill in a week and it requires zero money down.

I guarantee that 50%+ of the small businesses in your town have a bunch of manual SOPs that can be completely automated.

Example: every time a potential customer makes an inquiry, the admin assistant manually puts their details into 3 different spreadsheets. […]

Your pitch?

“I’ll automate a bunch of your back-end tasks and processes. If it doesn’t save you and your team 5+ hours per week (average client saves 12.5 hours per week), then you don’t pay and I’ll refund your deposit.”

I love businesses like this where the skills you develop can be used to make money right away as a freelancer, and also to build a higher-level business down the line.

Web design was that skill for me. I made a living as a freelance web designer for many years, and now I run my own website full-time 🥳

Some other skills along those lines…

From 0 to 6 Figures (What Few People Will Tell You)

Michael MuttiahMichael MuttiahFounder of Job Ready English $100,000+ annual revenue
Published May 17, 2023 by Niall Doherty

Michael Muttiah writes on Reddit that his business has…

Grown from 0 to 100K in 3 years mainly through digital products, with some copywriting and coaching. Yes you read that right. 3 years. Not 3 months.

According to that post, Michael is 36 years old and 10 years ago he was “a hopeless and helpless drug addict who couldn’t do squat” 😔

He’s since racked up a decade of paid writing work.

Job Ready English appears to be his main thing now, where he helps international students in the UK 🇬🇧 go from a study visa to a work visa and find a job.

You can see the digital products he has for sale here. The most popular is apparently his Interview Success Secrets Preparation Kit.

Michael’s full post on Reddit is well worth a read, as he shares lots of hard lessons learned on his business journey.

A couple that stood out to me 👇

You’ll never work so hard for so little. There are months when I JUST had enough to pay the bills. And I’d worked 60,80, or 100 hours that week. It can be soul destroying at times. I can hand on heart say, starting and running a business has been the most difficult thing I have ever done. Apart from getting sober. If it works, the pay off will come 3,5, 10, 20+ years down the line. But VERY FEW people are going to get rich in a few months. That expectation on yourself could literally give you a nervous breakdown.

I can’t work 100 hour weeks. Though the hustle culture is becoming a bit more wholesome, the first 6 months of the business I spent 10-12 hours a day 6 or 7 days a week, driving myself mad trying to get money through the door. And you know what happenned? I would then spend 2-3 days like a potato curled in a ball in bed watching Netflix, because my brain died. I can only speak for myself. But today, when I’m tired… I go home. I don’t pound another black coffee and “go hard” because I’ll just feel like shit the next day.

AI Gimmick Earned This Influencer $71,610 in a Week

Caryn MarjorieCaryn MarjorieSnapchat Influencer $71,610 first-week revenue from CarynAI
Published May 17, 2023 by Niall Doherty

She is Caryn Marjorie, and she has 1.8 million followers on Snapchat.

The gimmick is her “AI girlfriend” voice bot, which lets fans chat with her via Telegram and receive personalized voice messages 💬

The voice messages are generated by AI, but they sound pretty realistic.

Olivia Moore signed up for it and posted some examples in this thread.

Users are charged $1 per minute for chatting with virtual Caryn 🤑

Fortune reports

Though CarynAI has only been charging users for a week in beta testing, it’s already generated $71,610 in revenue from her 99% male partners, according to an income statement Marjorie’s business manager shared with Fortune. With this, Marjorie sees having an A.I. doppelgänger as a promising way to level up her career as an influencer.

Olivia Moore again

FWIW, there was a lot of controversy about the bot being used for explicitly NSFW content, against Caryn’s intent.

From the conversations in the Telegram group now, it seems like they’ve fixed this via tuning the model – much to some users’ chagrin 😂

Philip DeFranco suspects the NSFW stuff may have been intentional…

this very much feels less like, “Oh no, the AI’s gone rogue,” and more like a smart, savvy person realizing this is a fantastic free marketing tool.

Caryn is marketing herself as “the first influencer transformed into AI,” so she’s clearly all-in on the hottest trend right now: artificial intelligence 🤖

Which isn’t something I thought a Snapchat influencer could leverage to boost their profile, but there you go.

Anyway, for better or worse, it does feel like this voice bot thing will become widespread eventually.

Last word to Olivia Moore…

Per the @ForeverVoicesAI team, they’re working on live audio calls – as well as a text bot.

IMO, I don’t see why every influencer who makes money via direct payments (on OnlyFans, etc.) wouldn’t consider this. 🤔

It’s a high margin way to build stronger fan relationships

A Small Win Can Make All The Difference

📖 From the book Essentialism by Greg McKeown…

Teresa Amabile and Steven Kramer gathered anonymous diary entries from hundreds of people and covering thousands of workdays. On the basis of these hundreds of thousands of reflections, Amabile and Kramer concluded that “everyday progress—even a small win” can make all the difference in how people feel and perform. “Of all the things that can boost emotions, motivation, and perceptions during a workday, the single most important is making progress in meaningful work,” they said.

What’s a small win you can achieve today? 🎯

The Most Genuine YouTuber Earns ~$10K/Month

John JurasekJohn Jurasek (ReviewBrah)YouTuber $10,000 estimated monthly revenue
Published May 15, 2023 by Niall Doherty

His name is John Jurasek, better known as ReviewBrah…

With an unusual appearance and always dressed in a suit, John mainly reviews fast food items 🍔 on his YouTube channel, The Report of The Week.

His first ever video – as a 13-year-old back in 2011 – was a review of different energy drinks…

By 2016 he was apparently earning $1800 per month via YouTube…

John, a part-time college student who lives with his parents, supports himself with YouTube ad revenue and donations to his Patreon page. He estimates that he makes around $1,500 a month from ads and around $300 in donations.

He only had about 100,000 subscribers on YouTube at that time.

As of this writing, he has 2.75 million 📈

I’ve seen estimates that he could now be earning as much as $20,000 per month.

But as John said in a 2019 article

A common misconception viewers have of all YouTubers with over a million subscribers is that they are all wealthy; when, in reality, it could be quite the opposite… YouTube, as a platform, does not equate to any form of job security since ad rates and promotion across the platform fluctuate constantly.

However, I think $10,000 per month is a good, conservative estimate for John’s income 💰

His main channel is 25x bigger now than it was in 2016 – back when he was earning $1800/month – he has 650+ active patrons, and he’s grown his podcast channel to 90k subscribers.

You can also see from his video descriptions that he’s monetizing via…

MerchPayPal donationsAn Amazon Influencer store

(Curiously, he doesn’t have any sponsors on his main channel. Adding those would easily give him an extra few $1000/month in revenue, IMO.)

While researching all the above I kept coming across people gushing about how genuine / wholesome / endearing John is 🥰

A few years back, Sam Leach wrote a thoughtful article on this topic.

An excerpt…

In addition to food reviews, Reviewbrah has also been known to dip into more personal subjects at times, particularly with a focus on mental health. His openness regarding his own struggles feels different than other YouTubers. Reviewbrah, whose entire gig is being genuine, is able to provide a sort of gravity that is simply impossible with a channel devoted to being outrageous.

A few of John’s videos that give you a good feel for that…

My Average Day 2020 (Raw Video)… How I Get Through A Bad Day… I React to Mean Comments…

He also gets plenty of supportive comments, like this one on that last video…

Sweet boy, you are the most wonderful channel on YouTube! You really genuinely are such an inspiration to all to be well mannered, well spoken, and you’re always so well dressed. You have the loveliest skin tone, your eyes are stunning, and your cheekbones could cut glass. You couldn’t be better in any possible way! Please continue always being yourself. ❤

I love John’s story because he’s about as different as you can get from the typical YouTuber. His style and approach is totally unique, and embracing his quirkiness has led him to financial success and significant cultural impact 💪

John once said that his advice for aspiring YouTubers was to find what makes them unique, and noted…

For me it was the suits.

What might it be for you?

$140,000 Making Up Slogans on Fiverr

Tom O'MalleyTom O'MalleyFreelance Web Designer $140,000 revenue from Fiverr gigs
Published May 15, 2023 by Niall Doherty

Check this gig on Fiverr: I will create a perfect slogan or tagline

The seller has over 8500 reviews and apparently “15,000 happy clients.”

The basic gig price is $100.

$100 x 15k = $1.5 million earned, right? 🤑

Not quite.

I did a little digging and found a 2015 blog post written by the seller, Tom O’Malley…

How I Mastered Fiverr

Tom wrote that post after completing his 10,000th order on Fiverr, and he revealed his income halfway through…

As of today, I’ve raked in a total of $65,427 from my Fiverr efforts. It may sound like a lot but it’s a slow climb and spread out over half a decade, isn’t really a game changer. I consider it pizza money plus some. I’m tracking to earn $2,900 in October which is on-par with the past few months. Perhaps it’s a bit more than pizza money after all…

Definitely more than pizza money 🍕 but far from $1.5 million.

Tom eventually increased his gig prices. He ended up earning “nearly $140,000” from Fiverr over the years – peaking at about $3000/month – and stopped selling on there in 2022.

Nowadays he’s focused on freelance web design 🧑🏻‍💻

He writes

I’m a lifelong side-hustler incapable of finding happiness in a day job. I may not be filthy rich, but I earn about $12,000 per month in extra income on my own terms

[…] My freelance business has grown substantially. Being let go from my job due to the pandemic slowdown certainly expedited my plan to make web design my full-time gig. I now run Vertical Fold; a one-man creative agency in a cozy little office space down the street from our house.

Tom shares some good tips for…

A Tried & Tested Way To Go Viral

I noticed two similar tweets going viral the other day…

@itsPaulAi: 8 things impossible on ChatGPT but that Bard can do (for free)@moritzkremb: 10 things you can do with Bard that aren’t possible with ChatGPT

The tweets were posted about 4 hours apart.

I’m not sure if the second guy got the idea from the first. But even if @moritzkremb is a copycat, he still got 4+ million views and probably 1000s of new followers 📈

So while his tweet may not have been original, it worked.

It’s probably the most reliable strategy for going viral: find some popular/trending content, then leverage it to gain some attention for yourself or your business 😎

You can do that by…

Creating your own version of whatever’s trendingResponding with a hot takeRepurposing the content for a different format/platformCreating a clever meme on the topicEtc.

Anyway, those tweets got me thinking about the top 10 most visited websites in the world (source)…

Google.comYouTube.comFacebook.comReddit.comAmazon.comYahoo.comTwitter.comWikipedia.orgWeather.comInstagram.com

(Okay fine, I left out two from that list, because they’re a bit naughty 🙈 and I didn’t want this email to end up in your spam folder.)

For most of the sites above, there’s a way to see what’s trending on them…

Google TrendsYouTube TrendingFacebook & Instagram Hot Topicsr/popular and Subreddit StatsAmazon Best Sellers and Trending Products in May 2023Twitter Trends (log out to see worldwide)

If you’re a content creator looking to grow your audience (especially on social), it might be worth spending some time looking through those resources each week, and planning your own content accordingly 🧐

$8.7K/Month Helping People Write Thank-You Notes

Heidi BenderHeidi BenderFounder of Tons of Thanks $8,700 monthly revenue
Published May 15, 2023 by Niall Doherty

Heidi Bender’s website is Tons of Thanks.

According to a recent interview, Heidi started the site in 2014…

I started my website… to help people write thank-you notes. Before becoming a full-time writer, I worked as a data management consultant for twenty-two years.

Nowadays, Heidi says the site receives millions of visitors each year, with 99% of the traffic coming from search engines, and she’s earning $8,700 per month via display ads 💰

Heidi learned about blogging a couple of years before she started her website, and brainstormed a few different ideas she could focus on…

One idea that I shortlisted was thank-you note writing. My mom taught me at an early age to write thank-you notes, and I continued writing them as an adult. I surveyed my friends about the idea and learned that some had never written a thank you.

To further validate my idea, I found websites already helping people write thank-you notes. And several books had been written on the topic.

However, many of the example messages others were providing felt too generic. I could provide better examples of what a good thank-you note looks like, which would help people write their own meaningful thank you messages.

This is the origin story of many successful businesses: someone looking around for a particular thing, not finding the existing solutions to be good enough, then setting out to make something better 😎

It was a long slog for Heidi though. Sounds like the site earned less than $1000/month for several years, and she only started earning enough to quit her day job in 2021.

All that said, I can’t help but wonder how sites like Tons of Thanks will survive ChatGPT 🤖

Today, my first instinct if I want to write a thank you note is not to google around for a template. Instead, I go to ChatGPT, write a quick prompt, and instantly get back something good enough.

What do you think?

Will info sites like Heidi’s soon be a thing of the past? 🤔

Is That All You Got, Sucka?

📖 From Jen Sincero’s book, You Are a Badass at Making Money

The number one thing wealthy people attribute their success to is tenacity. Nobody achieves great success without walking through the fire. And the difference between those who succeed and those who fail is a no-nonsense commitment to staying the course no matter how hot the fire gets.

There is almost always a moment when all hell breaks loose—you lose a key client, your storeroom burns down, Starbucks moves in across the street from the coffee shop you just opened—and in these moments you have two choices: You can either say Screw it, I’m out of here, or Is that all you got, sucka?

When the pain is almost too much to bear, if your mindset is weak, you will give up and blame something or someone else for your failure. If your mindset is rock solid, you will persevere.
