Origins of a $5 Million ARR Software Company (Yelp Hack)

Published June 9, 2023 by Niall Doherty
The software is called MoveItPro, and their pitch goes like this
The #1 moving company software
Increase your revenue and profitability with the best moving and storage software for moving companies. MoveitPro is a one-stop shop for everything to do with the operations of your company.
Notes from a recent interview with founder Jason Bergenske…
In 2011, Jason took over a moving and storage business in Orlando, Florida, which his grandparents had started in 1968.
He quickly became frustrated that the business was still being run with pen and paper instead of modern software.
So he started looking around for a solution.
He couldn’t find a good software solution, so he decided to build his own…
It wasn’t smooth sailing right away. Jason went through five different teams before he found developers he could rely on to build what he needed.
But a couple of years later, he had spent over $75,000 on development and only built about 10% of the features that he thought his business needed.
Most people would see that as a failure, but for Jason it was a big aha moment
He reasoned: if it’s so hard for me to build software to run my company, it must also be really hard for other moving and storage companies.
So he decided to go all in on the software, and invested another ~ $200,000 – funded from the profits of his existing business – to build a product he was happy with and felt confident he could sell to other companies.
Jason ultimately spent 5 years building the software before he got his first paying customer.
Waiting that long and investing that much money before landing a customer is usually a recipe for disaster
But in this case Jason was able to test out and perfect the product in his own company before offering it to others.
Essentially, he was his own first customer.
And it worked out well, to the point where MoveItPro now earns $5 million a year in recurring revenue
Jason’s first real customers were friends who owned other moving companies.
Beyond that, he used a clever hack to find customers via Yelp.
He would go on there and “request a quote” from other moving companies, but attached to the quote he would explain about the software and how it might be helpful.
Jason explains the clever part…
When someone does request a quote on Yelp… it sends a push notification directly to the owner of that [company’s] cell phone and… Yelp penalizes that owner if they do not respond to the message within a certain amount of time.
The result…
We started messaging hundreds of moving companies throughout the United States and we probably signed up 50 moving companies in a matter of two months.
Looks like Yelp still has this feature.
Could be a good way to pitch your products or services to other businesses

How does Marketplace Superheroes help you make money?
Marketplace Superheroes Accelerate (MPSH Accelerate) aims to teach you about Amazon wholesale.
It involves buying brand-name products in bulk from US-based distributors and selling them on Amazon using FBA.
Fulfilled by Amazon (FBA) is a service that takes care of storage, packaging, and shipping on behalf of the seller.
Here’s an example…
Let’s say you conduct research, which is taught in the program, and discover that Disney action figures are a good product to sell.
You then buy 500 units in bulk for $500 at $1 each, send them to an Amazon warehouse, and list them for $2 each. Each time you get a sale, Amazon handles the fulfillment.
Assuming all units sell, your cost is $500 and your revenue is $1,000. So your profit is $500 before Amazon fees and other business costs.
Everything considered, you could expect to take home $100-300.
Screenshot from sales webinar with more info…

MPSH Accelerate is for entrepreneurs of all levels who want to sell on Amazon but lack the funds, experience, or desire to do Amazon private label.
This is largely because the suggested budget for private label is around $5,000 to $7,500. Amazon private label is also more complex and risky.
But you only need around $1,000 to $2,000 to try Amazon wholesale.
More details from the sales webinar…

It’s complicated.
Here are a few comments on Reddit calling out Robert and Stephen…

It’s worth noting that these comments are a year old and discuss an older MPSH training.
What’s odd is that nearly every account that left a negative comment had only 1-2 comments. And all their activity involved calling MPSH a scam.
So I’m skeptical that these are legitimate comments from real students.
However, we found verified MPSH customers had similar complaints about the old Ignite training…
This seems like a predatory company. I have been a part of their community for a couple of years now and it’s atrocious how they operate. If anyone asks a question they dislike, they either delete it or try to turn other students against the person. Moreover, they pre-sold a lot of shipping space for a certain price and then refused to refund...
Validated Reviewer
On the outside, this course seems like a very nice and professional training of good value. However, once you get into the training, they will waste your time for about a year by shifting through product after product on Amazon. Only after another year, do they teach the right way to find the product. It’s ridiculous. As you get locked into their ecosystem, everything will cost so much more than you anticipated. You will also need to learn how to navigate through their learning courses and their program framework. It will take you months to get familiar with that. Their classes and groups make it sound so enticing, but in the end, it is all a waste of time and money…

So what conclusion can be drawn from all of this?
IMO, while Robert and Stephen have clearly upset some of their students in the past, they seem to be doing a better job with their new Accelerate program.
I say this for a few reasons:
Accelerate is a different business model (wholesale vs. private label)I didn’t see any aggressive upsells or significant hidden costsThey are sunsetting the original MPSH programThat said, I’m still not a fan of their marketing.
One claim they make is that certain products you invest in will definitely make you money.
Webinar screenshot…

I don’t know of any business investment that’s 100% risk-free, so this is a red flag for me.
Robert and Stephen also make the idea of earning large amounts of money with the Amazon FBA business model sound incredibly easy…

They have some student results to back up their financial claims, but it’s likely that most students never make any money. This is true with any training program.
Also, from what I’ve seen, Robert and Stephen do not provide any disclaimers about earnings. This may give beginners the impression that achieving success with their Amazon method is much easier than it is.
Another person involved is Mike Sieben. He appears to be MPSH Accelerate’s resident Amazon wholesale expert and instructor and has a clean reputation as far as I can tell.
Below is a video from Stephen and Mike to give you a feel for their style…
Are Robert Rickey & Stephen Somers’ students getting results?Yes.
The checkout page features numerous screenshots of student results. Here are a few…

But as noted, it does take quite a bit of time and effort to implement the training and generate a good return on investment.

The official word…

MPSH also offers a robust software called Hero Launchpad…

It costs extra but has 17+ useful tools in one place.
My only knock on the member’s area is that the search feature rarely returns results for even the most basic searches.
It’s generally not an issue, though, as all lessons are clearly labeled.

Most in Need of Change
Words below from the book Moneyball by Michael Lewis.
He’s writing about Billy Beane – played by Brad Pitt in the movie – who revolutionized baseball with a data-driven approach to scouting and analyzing players.
[Beane] couldn’t help but notice that his scouting department was the one part of his organization that most resembled the rest of baseball. From that it followed that it was most in need of change.
What part of your business most resembles what everyone else in your industry/niche is doing?
Could there be an opportunity there to do things different… and better?
2 Directory Sites Earning $10,000+ Per Month

Published June 6, 2023 by Niall Doherty
Ryan Doyle tweeted about SaaSHub.com back in September…
Cool, high-earning business I ran across
SaaSHub just shows a listing page for different tech tools, bringing in 1.3m views a month
Costs $99/m to be on the featured page.
With 108 featured listings, that’s over $10k MRR. Wow.
Right now I’m counting 106 featured listings on this page, and the price has been raised to $130/month.
So that’s $13,780 per month in revenue
Stan Bright is the founder of SaaSHub, started it back in 2014.
He used to share his revenue numbers – $2.7K/month in Mar 2021 – but this post on Indie Hackers might have convinced him to stop doing that.
The interesting thing to me about SaaSHub is that the content seems to be mostly user generated. SaaS companies submit their products by filling out a form, and can then pay to be featured
Stan explains here why companies take the time to submit…
you will have a permanent do follow link + relevant presence.
Stan’s other site is LibHunt.com, which is pretty much the same thing except for open source projects.
That site apparently gets 1.7 million visitors per month. But given that open source projects don’t have money to spend, LibHunt seems to be monetized entirely with display ads.
Good chance that site is also earning Stan $10,000+ per month
It can be hard to get traction on these directory sites, but they seem to be a very good business once established, especially when the content is mostly user generated.
What other niches/industries could this work for?

How Much They Got Paid For Their 1st Upwork Gigs
A question posted to Twitter…
How much were you paid for your first gig on @upwork?
(Upwork is a big freelance marketplace, btw)
Responses are all across the board, from $0 to $7000
Morgan Overholt responded that her first gig as a graphic designer was for $10. She’s since gone on to earn more than $600,000 via Upwork.
Mike K from Uganda responded…
$5 for a month
The man was a user
Good thing is he gave me access to courses that boosted my skills. I am now top rated plus so I don’t regret that gig.
He’s gone on to earn $20,000+ on Upwork and now charges $30/hour for social media advertising.
Matt Ruiz responded…
$1k up front.
$7k when the project was complete.
Sounds like a lot, but I found an interview with Matt and it seems he was one of the lowest bids for that first project…
Matt specialized in Salesforce applications… [he] needed to brush up on his coding from his college days to cater to other frameworks. He spent the next couple of months living off of his savings. He searched for clients on Upwork but he was in a bit of a bind due to his limited experience.
He decided to price himself much lower than his competition. Once again, all he needed was one person to take a chance on him. He bid on jobs from small businesses. His rationale was that these companies would be more inclined to hire scrappy employees who lacked traditional credentials. Matt’s thinking paid off and he landed his first client. Many soon followed.
Anyway, the point is that it’s normal to work for peanuts when starting out. So if you’re fresh out of the gate, don’t turn your nose up at low paying gigs.
As long as you’re learning from those gigs and building a portfolio, you’re making good progress
From $1.80 Articles to Earning $6+ Million

Published June 6, 2023 by Niall Doherty
Back in 2011, Julia McCoy was driving home to tell her parents she’d failed college again
She writes…
I was in tears the whole drive home. I was 19 years old, and I knew that I didn’t love the degree I was pursuing (R.N.). It wasn’t something I’d ever love or become great at.
My parents were devastated at the news, just as I thought, and my father wouldn’t talk to me the rest of the month. It was heartbreaking to know that he lost all faith in me, and I spent the rest of the day in tears.
Julia picked herself up and decided to double-down on her side hustle as a freelance writer…
there I was, getting up early, applying for writing jobs, writing every assignment myself to gain experience, and slowly but surely building a brand. My first brand idea was awful: Writer4U2Hire.
I built a free website on Weebly and blogged regularly, and to my surprise, gained clients that directly inboxed me for work, then for repeat work, and then to ask if they could refer others to me. After that, I decided to get serious, and launched a real brand I could hang my hat on. I called it Express Writers.
According to a recent profile…
To scale, [Julia] hired remote contractors to write blog posts, landing page copy, product descriptions and more, eventually growing a pool of about 100 freelance writers.
A decade later, with $5 million in lifetime revenue and zero employees, she sold for a 7-figure sum.
Awesome
Sounds like Julia’s key skill is managing people. Organizing 100 freelance writers is no joke.
I’m guessing that she learned some of her management skills as a Crew Trainer at McDonald’s
She writes on LinkedIn…
This was my first job at 14 years old. I kept it for five years, and expanded my skills from front counter to grill, drive-through service, and much more. The manager wouldn’t allow me to quit; for all I know, I’m still on leave in a little McDonalds over in Pennsylvania.
Another takeaway here: Julia spent 10 years building her business.
10 years!
Think back to yourself 10 years ago. What if you had started a simple business back then and stuck with it?
What if you start a simple business now and stick with it for the next 10 years?
Lastly, I found the archive of Julia’s first website: writer4u2hire.com
Words from her about page in April 2011…
I was working part time at McDonalds, sometimes working 12 hour shifts to pay the bills. Then, in January 2011 I discovered a company named Content Galore through Amazon. I began writing for them as a part time employment opportunity, earning $1.80 for 150-word articles. As I wrote, I discovered my enjoyment for writing to get paid. I could write 10 approved articles inside an hour. I earned $18/hour.
So she went from $1.80 articles to $5 million in lifetime revenue and a 7-figure exit.

19-Year-Old Boxer Earning (At Least) $10K/Month Online

Published June 6, 2023 by Niall Doherty
At the start of April, a guy named Enys Kelmeni – also known as Ekayy – posted this YouTube Short…
In there he says…
Today I wrote down this sticky note saying “hit 100K members” on my home boxing program before July. It sounds unrealistic but I think you’ve got to be delusional to win in life.
His home boxing program can be found at boxathome.org. It’s a video course that teaches people how to box, and it costs £24.99 (about $31 USD).
Enys said he already had 11k members in the program when he posted that video 2 months ago. Now his TikTok bio says he has 15k members.
15,000 x $31 = $465,000
Sounds like he runs frequent discounts on the program though, so I doubt he’s actually earned that much from it.
Regardless, Enys has amassed a substantial following online within the last 2 years
Short form video is his main thing. He’s published 400+ short videos on all those platforms
His most popular YouTube Short, with 3 million views…
How to fight against a gun…SocialBlade estimates that Enys is earning “$3.8K – $60.5K” per month from ads on his YouTube channel. (And he’s apparently adding 900+ new subscribers per day.)
So It’s safe to assume that this 19-year-old is earning at least $10k per month teaching people how to fight online
Three key things that have helped him get there IMO…
Knowledge: he’s clearly an experienced boxer, knows what he’s talking about.Relentless: he’s constantly uploading those shorts, no fancy editing.Confidence: exceptional for a 19 year old.Words from Enys at the 19-minute mark of a recent interview…
Even if you’re not the best boxer in the world, you’ve got to trick your mind and tell yourself you’re the best boxer. Who cares if Mike Tyson’s out there? Mike Tyson will destroy me in a fight, but if I tell myself I will destroy Mike Tyson in a fight, it still might not happen, but it gives me confidence, it brings something out of you, it gives you some positive energy, and it might even give you a chance because you never know what might happen.
Reminds me of that famous Muhammad Ali quote…
I am the greatest. I said that even before I knew I was. I figured that if I said it enough, I would convince the world that I was really the greatest.
Better yet, he convinced himself

Hey, I’m Niall Doherty.
I quit my last 9-to-5 job back in 2010.
Since then, I’ve earned my living online in various ways. Over the last 3 years (through 2022) I’ve earned $536,000 from my laptop.
I’m on a mission to accurately rate and review all the best online business courses. My team and I are spending many hours investigating these courses and getting feedback from real students.
All that to say: we know a thing or two about such courses and making money online.
The Best Sales Course? We’re on a mission to find the best sales training, based on our own extensive research and feedback from verified students.
While the Chat Money System sometimes does not feel like a sales course – it’s far more focused on mindset – it does cover a lot of the same ground.
With that in mind, the Chat Money System is decent sales training, but it’s not the best we’ve seen…

How does Chat Money System help you make money?
Chat Money System aims to help you make money by providing marketing services to businesses on Instagram. And instead of delivering the service yourself, you pay someone to do it for you under your brand (aka white labeling.)
So you’re basically a middleman that connects businesses with services, and you keep the difference between what you get paid and what you pay the service provider.
For example, let’s say you want to help doctors get more patients online.
You would:
Message 50 doctors per day on InstagramConvince a doctor to pay you $1,000 for Google ads or SEO servicesPay your partner $500 to fulfill the service and keep the $500 differenceWho is Chat Money System for?The sales page doesn’t specify who Chat Money System is for, but it seems to be intended for beginner marketers charmed by the opportunity to live a lavish lifestyle.
Which is the kind of lifestyle that Marcel Fernandes likes to show off on his Instagram…

Inside the training there’s a ton of mindset related material, so people willing to pay for motivational business content might find it appealing.
70+ ways how to make money online (including easy options)Does Marcel Fernandes have a good reputation? No, not exactly.
During my research of Marcel Fernandes and Chat Money System, I found far more criticism and scam accusations than praise for the training and its creator.
Some major red flags for me are the dozens of complaints about Marcel not delivering on his promises.
For example, students claim not getting access to the course and being ignored by customer support…

Now, to Marcel’s credit, I was able to join an onboarding call where there were 10 other students asking questions and getting answers from a team member.
If you want to give him the benefit of the doubt, it’s possible he was overwhelmed with demand and couldn’t keep up with onboarding new customers.
But even if that were true, it doesn’t excuse leaving people in the dark for weeks after taking their money
I’d expect much better from someone as successful and experienced as Marcel claims to be.
I also noticed numerous questionable marketing tactics on the Chat Money System sales page.
For example, there’s a countdown timer that doesn’t seem to do anything…

Logos from websites where I didn’t find any mention of Marcel or his training…

And content mentioned in the sales video that’s nowhere to be found in the course…

Marcel also says you’ll get access to a software that finds clients for you. But it turns out that this “software” is just the search feature on a well-known B2B social media platform
Next, you’re promised a “free accountability coach” that’s available “5 days per week.” However, it seems that this is actually sold as a $27/month group coaching upsell only after you get access to the main training.
And on top of that, here’s a financial claim that makes it seem like everyone will get results…
https://i.imgur.com/4sTJzGt.mp4You’ll be able to start using it today and make an extra income of three to four grand a month for the rest of your life.
In case you’re interested, below is a video of Marcel explaining the Chat Money System so you can get a better feel for his style…
Are Marcel Fernandes’ students getting results? The sales page features a few student results…

I’m not totally convinced these are legitimate given the other questionable marketing tactics used to promote the Chat Money System.
How much does Chat Money System cost? The course costs $97 one-time for lifetime access.
You’re also presented with the option to buy $27 per month group coaching, which he claims to offer for free.
There are no other costs involved.
Chat Money System Discount?I’ve searched high and low for a discount or coupon code for the Chat Money System but have yet to find mention of one anywhere. However, there is a place to enter a discount code at checkout.
So it looks like you’ll have to pay the full price if you want access.
Refund PolicyMarcel claims to offer an unconditional 7-day money-back guarantee and conditional 60-day, double your money, money-back guarantee.
HOWEVER, there have been multiple reports of people requesting refunds and not receiving them.
Also, the policy linked to from the sales page is for an entirely different program.
I would say it’s safer to assume you won’t be able to get your money back if you sign up.
How is Chat Money System structured? The member’s area looks like this once you log in…

The first 4 days of training focus mainly on mindset. The rest of the days are a mix of mindset, Marcel on camera talking about theory, whiteboard explanations, and actual over-the-shoulder instructions.
Here’s a look at the most action-packed day…

This is where most of the value is; the sales material here is quite strong.
I found that navigating the members’ area was somewhat confusing.
And while there is a search feature, most video names are vague. So it’s tough finding and rewatching specific material.
See the lesson names in this module, for example…

Marcel also includes 9 “high status” Instagram posts so your Instagram account looks complete as well as a detailed sales call script.
Green Lights
Here are a few things to like about Chat Money System…
Surprisingly valuable sales training.Strong emphasis at becoming the best at what you do.Red Flags
A few things about Chat Money System that might give you pause…
Complicated refund policy (+ numerous complaints about refunds).Lacking some key info, feels incomplete.Training often feels disjointed and hard to navigate.Unclear how often the training is updated. Many students complain about Marcel not keeping his promises.Questionable marketing tactics (false scarcity, financial claims).Other things you should knowYou’ll find some handy downloads within the training, including Instagram posts and sales scripts.Beyond all the mindset stuff, the course contains solid sales and copywriting training. However, what’s missing is the core element of actually introducing beginners to white label service providers. That’s totally left up to you to figure out. And without this element, newbies might have a tough time competing with every other business service seller on Instagram.👇 Subscribe to eBiz Insider 👇Every Tuesday and Friday we email 30,780 people like you with top tips, insights and opportunities to build your online business. Should you join Chat Money System?
If you’re new to entrepreneurship and are looking for a quick and easy way to make money online, there’s a good chance you’ll end up disappointed with the Chat Money System.
There simply isn’t enough beginner-friendly guidance to justify the price.
Plus, the combination of shady marketing, scam accusations, and complaints about not receiving refunds is too striking to ignore IMO.
Personally, I’d be hesitant to join Marcel Fernandes’ training given all the above.

The Cheesy Animated YouTube Channel Earning $100,000’s Per Month

Published June 1, 2023 by Niall Doherty
The channel is My Story Animated
Their most popular video, with 54 million views in just over a year…
No one knew I was a famous singer…The channel launched in January of 2019 and has since racked up 17+ million subscribers and more than 8 billion views
They’ve come a long way from their first video, which doesn’t look great…
I Cant Stop Stealing From My Friends And Family…The channel claims to animate real stories submitted by fans, but they don’t seem to provide any easy way to submit stories. Accordingly, there are a lot of claims online that the stories are fake or highly exaggerated
Regardless, they’re clearly making bank.
Social Blade estimates that the channel could be earning as much as $963,600 per month from ad revenue alone
I doubt their earnings are that high. $200,000 a month is probably a more accurate estimate… still way more than I would have guessed for cheesy animated videos.
If you want to have a go at creating your own animated videos, here’s a 14-minute video showing how to do it with AI tools (skip to the 12:30 mark to see their end result).
They mainly use free tools there, but recommend one that costs $29/month for better results.
Of course, creating such animations is the easy part.
The hard part is emulating the crazy growth and financial success of My Story Animated
How did they get so big anyway?
I couldn’t find any definitive info on this, but my guess is they used the Jerry Springer approach: tell outrageous stories and lean into the controversy that ensues
You can get a sense of this by searching for “my story animated reaction” on YouTube.
As the saying goes, there’s no such thing as bad publicity.
And that especially seems to be the case when you’re a faceless channel owned by a mysterious Israeli company called Zovid
A more realistic way to earn a living creating animated videos is to do it for businesses, like these two Irish guys…

How To Start Creating With Artificial Intelligence
Ammaar Reshi has gone viral a few times in recent months due to his AI experiments
Check these out…
Alice and Sparkle children’s book, made in a weekend, earned $45 the first day but also prompted death threats
Creator Economy has an interview with Ammaar where they ask…
It’s great that you built this reputation without needing some machine learning PhD. You simply used the tools to create stuff.
Ammaar replied…
Exactly. And that’s what makes this space so special—anyone can jump in and pick up these tools. Your imagination is the limit.
He goes on to share the 3-step process he uses to create with AI…
1. Pick a use case: e.g., Children’s book.
2. Break down the steps: e.g., Story, illustration, publishing.
3. Find the right tool for each step. e.g., ChatGPT, Midjourney, Amazon.
Ammaar has more tips and examples in this Twitter thread
While we’re on the subject, some other interesting AI bits and pieces…
Podcast.ai, a podcast entirely generated by artificial intelligence, featuring the likes of Oprah, Quentin Tarantino and Richard Feynman.I Used AI to Interview Dead People: 9-minute video showing you how to create a Podcast.ai-like interview with free tools. The musician Grimes is allowing people to mimic her voice and use it in their own songs, “offering 50-50 royalties for commercial use.” Here’s how to do it and here’s an example song… Example of Photoshop’s new AI capabilities: part 1 (first one is a joke), part 2.
Google SGE First Impressions: 17-minute video where Gael from Authority Hacker shares 9 takeaways from playing around with Google’s new AI search features… Lord of the Rings by Wes Anderson Trailer: mind-blowing AI-generated trailer of a fictional movie.
That last one has me thinking: probably won’t be long until we see a blockbuster movie that was made by one guy in his bedroom with the help of AI …
