Tory is a good example of mashing two very separate skills into a killer combination…

No idea how much money he’s making – fwiw one source estimates $1.3 million annual revenue  – but commissions on all those properties he’s listing could add up fast 📈

Do you have experience or skills you could combine with short form video?

Or how about partnering with an established player in an industry and helping them produce these kinds of videos? 🤔

Even if you have no experience making such videos, an app like Luma AI can turn you into a pro pretty fast.

Quick demo of Luma here and it’s got great reviews.

Crazy New Generative AI Videos

See them in this Twitter thread 👈

Some look super-realistic, like the farm scenes in this video…

Others, like Duck Story, are incredibly trippy 🤪

And this AI car commercial is dreamy… “Are you driving or dreaming?”…

Seems most of these are being made with Runway, which turns your text prompts into video. It’s free to try and the Pro version is only $28/month.

👉 Here’s an 11-minute tutorial showing how to use it…

If you have a product or service for sale, it could be fun to play around with Runway and get it to produce some promos for you. Post them on social, letting people know they’re AI-generated.

Anything AI-related seems to have a good chance of going viral these days 🚀

You could also offer to do this for someone else’s product or service.

Also, it looks like AI can now transform your thoughts into video via fMRI 🧠

One YouTuber comments…

The ability for artificial intelligence to read your thoughts is now here.

Scientists did an experiment where people would have their brain scanned while they were watching a video. The image on the right is the AI trying to decipher what exactly the person was watching.

The technology is getting so good that scientists are confident that we will soon be able to get video recordings of our dreams.

In the future, the best horror movies might just be a brain scan of someone’s night terror 😱

His $3 Million a Year YouTube Channel (Thanks To SpongeBob)

Jason GryniewiczJason GryniewiczFounder of Daily Dose of Internet $3 Million estimated annual revenue
Published June 19, 2023 by Niall Doherty

Daily Dose of Internet is probably the biggest faceless channel on YouTube.

Started in 2015, each video on the channel is a 2-5 minute compilation of viral clips 👀

It’s like scrolling through TikTok without having to scroll.

Daily Dose has racked up 16 million subscribers and 6.5 billion views over the years 📈

Jason Gryniewicz is the guy behind the channel and he shared lots of details about it in a recent interview…

Some interesting nuggets 👇

He’s had offers of $10-12 million to buy the channelSays he’d sell it for $20 million and go start an apple orchardPays people $30/hour to scroll through TikTok and find videosSpends $200 to $3000 per video to license clipsHe’s 30 years old

Check out this 3-minute video where Jason explains how his channel took off…

In short, he uploaded dozens of videos over a ~2 year period and barely got any views. Then one of his videos took off several months after he uploaded it 🚀

The video doesn’t seem to be online anymore but it was called…

Voice Actor of Spongebob Swearing

Jason says…

I have everything to thank for that SpongeBob video because, look at this, just years of emptiness, years of emptiness, nothing going on. I probably uploaded like 60 videos at this point. And then boom, just comes out of nowhere.

Before that happened, Jason was working in a bank after graduating from college with a degree in political science. He was earning about $40,000 a year and says he was “extremely depressed” 😞

Pretty incredible that a video of a SpongeBob voice actor swearing turned his life around.

Socialblade now estimates that the annual earnings from ads on Jason’s channel are anywhere from $1.2 to $18.4 million 🤯

Let’s be conservative and say he’s earning $3 million a year from it.

My main takeaway from Jason’s success: you have to keep trying things.

Jason was off-and-on with his channel for the first couple of years, but he kept coming back to it and making videos and eventually one of them hit.

But even if he hadn’t gotten lucky with that Spongebob video, so long as he kept trying he would have gotten lucky with something else eventually.

Every piece of content you put out there, every project you ship, it’s another baited hook you have in the ocean, with the potential to catch a monster 🪝

And you’re building skills and experience along the way, making each new effort more likely to bear fruit than the last.

So keep going, keep trying.

Niche Freelance Community Earning $20-30K Per Month

Kyle ChaykaKyle ChaykaCo-founder of Study Hall $25,000 estimated monthly revenue
Published June 19, 2023 by Niall Doherty

A couple of weeks ago Kyle Chayka announced that StudyHall.xyz, “the freelance journalism newsletter and community” that he co-founded in 2015 had been acquired.

Exact details are undisclosed but apparently it was a 6-figure deal 🤑

The founder of the acquiring company “said [Study Hall] has raised $2 million and has six employees.”

Looks like Study Hall started out as a physical coworking space in Brooklyn, but quickly became more of an online community monetized via Patreon.

One article referred to Study Hall as “the gossipy media site for freelancers” 💬

Here’s the blurb on their Patreon page back in 2018

Instead of spending endless hours scrolling through Twitter to keep up on the latest in the media world, sign up for Study Hall!

Our $2/month weekly newsletter, the Digest, is a vital recap of digital media news, with original reporting and commentary (gossip) on magazines, social media, podcasts, and more.

We also offer a job opportunity newsletter, editor databases, online community, and tools ($4-$18/month) for people who work in the media industry, especially freelance writers.

By mid-2020 they had almost 5000 patrons 😎

Then they moved off Patreon to their own platform.

They now have “over 3,000 subscribers” and their pricing starts at $10/month or $99/year.

They may have grandfathered in their old patrons at the original prices, but current revenue is still likely to be in the range of $20-30K per month.

If they were acquired for 2-3x annual revenue that would put the sale price at the high end of 6-figures. I’m going to guess $800,000 💰

It strikes me that this kind of premium newsletter/community model could work for a lot of different niches.

If there isn’t already, there should be similar for…

Graphic designersVeterinariansCopywritersSocial media managersArchitectsEtc.

The tough part would be spreading the word and getting people to sign up.

I couldn’t find any good info on how Study Hall did that, but I get the impression it was mostly organic, word of mouth 🧐

Co-founders Kyle and P.E. Moskowitz are freelance journalists who have written for a bunch of big publications, and both have strong online followings. So that surely helped attract new members to Study Hall.

If I were going to try this business model, I’d either stick to an industry I’m very familiar with, or partner with someone well-known in the industry I want to target 🤝

Simple App Making $8000/Month Within a Year

Liz and Lukas HermannLiz and Lukas HermannFounders of StageTimer.io $8000+ monthly recurring revenue
Published June 19, 2023 by Niall Doherty

The app is StageTimer.io ⏱

It’s a “remote-controlled countdown timer,” mainly used by video producers and event organizers.

2-minute video demo of it here…

The founders are husband-and-wife team Lukas and Liz Hermann, who spoke about the business on a recent podcast.

Lukas got the idea for the app about 18 months ago while at a friend’s recording studio. His friend was running in and out of the studio to start/stop a timer on his laptop.

Lukas figured he could build a timer that was remote controlled. He was sure someone would have created an app like that already, but there was nothing 🤷‍♂️

He built the first version of the app in a weekend and asked for feedback on Reddit.

Liz explains

The initial version of Stagetimer was as simple as it gets. The layout was simple and there wasn’t even a landing page. Once you typed stagetimer.io, you would get to a simple timer that would allow you to display a message, a timer, or a combination of both. And, of course, the key element: you could share the timers with others instead of hoping that your guest presenter speaking from the other side of the world has remembered to set a timer before their presentation.

Six months later (June 2022), they launched a paid version and got their first paying customer via another post on Reddit 🥳

Lukas’ choice of subreddit was smart: he posted in r/CommercialAV, a niche community of people “interested in commercial audio, video, and control technologies in all sectors.”

~6 months after launching the paid version, Stage Timer was already pulling in $8000/month, and Lukas said on the aforementioned podcast that he believes it has the potential to reach $1 million ARR 💰

After the initial launch, SEO has apparently been their best channel for customer acquisition.

They rank well for a bunch of timer keywords, such as…

30 minute timertimer 5 minutes

More importantly, they rank well for technical articles that their ideal customer is likely to google.

For example…

Run of Show Template & Best PracticesEvent Rundown & Show Flow Guide with Examples

💡 Lukas’ advice for finding a profitable business idea…

Everybody says “Scratch you own itch”

I say “Scratch somebody else’s itch”

You are a young developer? Chances are, all you itches have already been scratched in many ways.

Liz adds

Lukas and I often play a game where we challenge each other to observe how things around us could be done better. We try to look for inefficiencies and problems in everyday activities, and then come up with solutions and ideas for how to fix them.

This game has given us a lot of great ideas for potential businesses.

Don’t Kid Yourself: Do It Every Day

Jeff GoinsJeff GoinsWriter $2+ Million income over 7 years
Published June 16, 2023 by Niall Doherty

📝 From an article by Jeff Goins entitled, Why You Need to Write Every Day

Spending five hours on a Saturday writing isn’t nearly as valuable as spending 30 minutes a day every day of the week. Especially when you’re just getting started.

…habits practiced once a week aren’t habits at all. They’re obligations. Or maybe, at best, cute little hobbies.

And let’s not kid ourselves here. If you’re doing something once a week, it’s probably only a matter of time before you stop doing it altogether.

Jeff walks his talk.

💬 He revealed in a 2019 interview

I had decided when I started this blog at the end of 2010 when I was getting much more serious about writing for a living that I would do this for two years before I would quit. I would write every single day on this blog for two years without quitting.

That simple habit turned into a thriving business…

By the end of 2011, I’d grown an email list of about 10,000 people and realized that I could monetize this. Then in 2012, I sold a couple of ebooks and made about $50,000 off of this ebook called You Are A Writer, so Start Acting Like One. Then from there, I turned that ebook, essentially, into an online course called Tribe Writers and made an extra $100,000 or so off of that and some affiliate marketing that I was doing.

In 2012, I made about $150,000 in side income off of this little blog business that I had started in the last six months of the year.

Near the end of the interview he says…

[the business has] made a lot of money, millions of dollars in income… I’ve been running my business for almost seven years now

What’s the one habit that, if you did it every day without fail, would help you build an awesome business? 🤔

Start doing that today.

Zero to $64,000/Month in 3 Months With AI

Yasser ElsaidYasser ElsaidFounder of Chatbase $60,000 Chatbase monthly revenue
Published June 16, 2023 by Niall Doherty

From a recent interview on Indie Hackers…

Just a few months ago Yasser Elsaid was in his 4th year of college, interning at FAANG companies like Meta and Tesla. Then he placed his side hustle in front of the tidal wave that is OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

The timing worked out. The chatbot company he bootstrapped, Chatbase.co, is already doing a mindblowing $64,000 in monthly recurring revenue. His traffic hasn’t dipped since the initial launch. He just hired two employees to help with the overwhelming demand. And no: he didn’t pass all of his university classes. Nor does he care.

Chatbase lets you train ChatGPT on your content and then embed a chatbot on your website. Visitors to your site can interact with the chatbot, which provides responses based on your content 🤖

Yasser launched the first version of Chatbase with this tweet in early February.

He says in the IH interview…

Chatbase actually started as a “ChatGPT for your PDFs” tool. It was the easiest and most obvious use case. You just uploaded a PDF, then you could chat with its content. The MVP for this version took me about two months to build. I tweeted it to my 16 twitter followers…

My tweet went viral. I didn’t even have a pricing page yet. Anyone could upload as many documents and send as many messages as they wanted. As soon as I saw the traction, I stopped doing anything university related and focused 100% of my time on Chatbase. I knew I couldn’t mess up this opportunity.

I ended up failing two classes, but it was 100% worth it!

By May 11th Yasser was reporting $60,000 in monthly recurring revenue, despite his office consisting of only 2 chairs and a can of Red Bull 🤯

A few things that have helped Chatbase do really well…

“being really early in the market”“taking advantage of all the hype around ChatGPT”“twitter and AI influencers posting about it” (source)“posting to relevant subreddits”

Yasser has a post about marketing on Reddit 👈

One tip he shares there…

People are much more likely to upvote a product if it is free. Here is a very cool trick you can do!

Add a ‘?ref=reddit’ in the link to your product, then hide the pricing page if that ref exists.

Chatbase has four price plans, ranging from $19 to $399 per month.

But it’s also available as a $29 lifetime deal on AppSumo (aff link) for the next week or so 😱

Business Opportunity: Help Experts Build a Flywheel

Nathan Barry tweets about the “Podcast Guest Flywheel” …

Here’s how it works:

You accept an interview request with the understanding that you’ll be provided with the video recording afterward and allowed to repurpose the content however you see fit. Meaning you can clip it, transcribe it, turn it into blog posts, graphics, etc.

He goes into lots more detail there, and it’s helpful if you’re already an expert on a topic and can land a guest spot on an established podcast 🎙

But my main takeaway is that there are surely lots of experts who need help repurposing content like this.

You could be that help, leveraging easy-to-learn tools to become super productive 💪

Tools like…

Veed.io for video editingCastmagic for “podcast show notes & content”Klap.app for making short videosCanva for graphics to share on social

Start off doing this as a custom service to gain experience, then a productized service, and you could eventually grow it into an agency.

The hard part initially would be finding clients 🧐

I’d recommend reaching out to experts you already follow online, people who produce great content but aren’t doing much repurposing. You could even take a long-form interview they’ve done in the past, chop it up into snappy bitesize chunks, and send it to them as a gift 🎁

If they like that, offer to keep doing it for a fee.

And if they don’t, no worries, you’ve still gained experience and have some portfolio pieces you can use to pitch someone else.

Another idea here: it can be time consuming for those experts to find good podcasts and pitch them on a guest appearance.

So there could be an opportunity to become a pro podcast booker. People would hire you to find and pitch podcasts on their behalf.

Use a service like Podcast Clout to speed up the process 😎

(Btw, if you’re doing cold outreach, try using the template shared here.)

How a Small YouTube Channel Made $16,000 Last Month

Josh and CourtneyJosh and CourtneyYouTubers $16,000 first month revenue from Adventure Rig Shop
Published June 16, 2023 by Niall Doherty

The channel is called Native Nomads 🚙

It’s mostly about van life and offroad adventures, run by married couple Josh and Courtney.

Looks like they started taking YouTube seriously in early 2020 and have since published 300+ videos and racked up more than 1.6 million views.

But their channel still only has ~13k subscribers 😕

And they’ve only got ~10k followers on Instagram.

I heard about Josh and Courtney in a recent edition of the Copyblogger newsletter.

There’s no online edition I can link to, but the newsletter told how the couple long struggled to earn money from their channel.

They tried a bunch of things and didn’t really find anything that worked well 😢

Until…

Josh and Court knew there was [potential] because the bigger their brand got, the more companies were reaching out for sponsorships. But sponsorships were a lot of hassle and they knew there had to be a better way.

Finally, they decided to build their own store. Josh created relationships with many product suppliers and Courtney taught herself how to use Shopify and built an ecommerce store called Adventure Rig Shop. They launched their company and made $16,000 in revenue in the month of May!

Josh officially announced the opening of that online store in this April 21st video, a day after the first post on the store’s Instagram…

Looks like the main products they launched with were a bumper and winch for a Subaru Outback Wilderness.

The cheapest price listed for the bumper is $449 💰

So that’s how they were able to do $16k of revenue the first month: you don’t need to sell many products at that price point to hit the mark 🎯

Copyblogger’s take away…

[Josh and Courtney] knew that if they kept serving their audience by creating great content then they would establish themselves as authorities in the space. Eventually, they would find a business model that worked for them and ultimately, they took matters into their own hands by building a brand that they own, they control, and that gives them leverage in the industry.

They kept building, experimenting, iterating, having fun and eventually, they discovered the model that their audience wants. As a result, they’re now making a ton of money.

Nice 🤘

Unclear though how much of the $16k is actual profit. I assume they have to pay the product suppliers out of that.

But even if their profit is only 20-30%, it’s still an impressive first month for an ecommerce store built off the back of a 13k-subscriber YouTube channel.
