The Most Adaptable To Change
From a book called The Road Less Stupid by Keith J. Cunningham.
Charles Darwin is famous for his theory of “survival of the fittest.” What is particularly interesting is his definition of the word “fittest.” He did not conclude that it was the biggest, fastest, strongest, richest, oldest, or smartest. He hypothesized that it is the most adaptable.
It turns out that the key to survival in the business world is how flexible you are in response to changes in the marketplace or the environment.

A recent episode of How I Built This tells the story of Joel Simkhai 
The blurb…
In 2008 [Joel] was living in LA and looking for an easy way to meet other gay men. He saw the early potential of the GPS-enabled iPhone, and a year later, launched Grindr: an app where users could determine if a potential date – or a quick hookup – was down the block or ten miles away.
With no background in coding or app design, Joel bootstrapped Grindr into a global phenomenon – all the while dealing with technical meltdowns, safety issues, and criticism about toxicity on the app.
Joel ended up selling Grindr “to a Chinese gaming outfit for $245 million in two deals between 2016 and 2018” 
That exit explains how he was able to afford a $13 million house in Hollywood and a $30 million penthouse in NYC 
About 10 minutes into the HIBT episode, Joel explains how he developed an entrepreneurial spirit as a kid…
I remember my dad would always say to me, people out there have become very, very successful in selling shirt buttons… he’d point to the buttons on my shirt and say that there are millionaires who made their wealth by selling buttons. And it might not be glamorous, but it’s a great business for a bunch of people.
Very true.
Pick pretty much any object you see around you… chances are someone somewhere has made a fortune selling that object 
And a bunch of other people have likely earned a fortune providing products or services to that first business.
Sitting in my office right now I can see bird spikes outside the window 
I googled bird spikes and quickly found a “bird proofing company” in New Jersey that does $1.6 million a year in revenue. They’ve been in business for 17 years and are selling for $4.3 million.
That’s millions of dollars from selling tiny steel spikes.
And that’s just one company in New Jersey. There are likely a bunch more successful bird spike companies in the US alone 
All that to say: money is everywhere.

This Single Email Generates $6K/Month On Autopilot

Pat Walls runs StarterStory.com, which mainly features interviews with successful founders 
When people sign up to the Starter Story mailing list, they receive the welcome email shown in this screenshot.
Pat adds some context…
This single email generates $6K/month on autopilot. It’s just a welcome email, nothing overly salesy.
It’s personal, relevant, and shows the value of Starter Story.
It does it so well people pull out their CCs and pay $ after reading it.
That’s the power of a good email.
In his welcome email, Pat starts with the background of Starter Story, then asks the reader to reply to the email with the 
emoji, which helps ensure future emails don’t end up in spam.
He goes on to offer a 25% discount in the PS section of the email, saying it’s “for a limited time” only and “the number of spots available is super limited.”
Unclear if that’s real or fake scarcity 
but it seems to work well regardless. (I’m assuming the conversion rate is quite high.)
Pat says in the comments that he tested many variations before settling on that particular autoresponder email.
I think that’s one of the things he does best: test, test, test.
Another thing he tested on his website: scrolling table of contents 
The result of that test…
The table of contents performed significantly better than the control group in terms of time on site… 4-5x increase in time on site, more pages, better bounce rate
As a whole, it also increased the likelihood to subscribe to the Starter Story email list, which was an unexpected benefit

$2.5 Million Per Year Fitness App with Zero Employees

Joseph Mambwe is the founder of GymStreak 
That’s a fitness app that uses AI to create personalized workout plans based on your fitness goals and preferences. The idea is to build a streak and keep it going as long as possible.
Joseph grew up in rural Zambia 
before his family immigrated to the UK when he was 12. He struggled academically at first but managed to graduate at the top of his high school class.
His obsession with fitness started after school, which sparked the idea for GymStreak 
Joseph wasn’t much of a coder but he still built the initial version of the app back in 2012…
The simpler version of GymStreak was essentially just a catalog of exercises, with 2D images.
In 2018 he decided to level up his coding skills and turn GymStreak into a better app.
In a recent interview, Joseph revealed that Facebook and TikTok ads have been the most effective acquisition channels for him
He had to figure out a way to run profitable ads without burning cash…
The key for us being able to grow so quickly with paid ads with no funding was being able to bring that payback period to day 0, meaning through a combination of high creative production, onboarding, offers and smart pricing we are able to return all ad spend on the day we spent it, and actually at present, we are turning about ~1.5x on ad spend on day 0.
So for example let’s say I spend $100 today, I will return ~$150 in new revenue without any renewals or trial conversions
Now, after 5 years GymStreak still has zero employees and is doing $2.5 million in annual revenue. (The app is free with premium upgrades.)
And Joseph is confident GymStreak can hit $15-20 million in annual revenue within a few years

$2900 Last Month Unbundling Canva

It was started by Rishi and launched around January 2022.
The app is free to use and costs $12/month or $120/year for pro features.
Their tagline..
Turn your
meh screenshots into beautiful images
In a recent tweet, Rishi reports that the app earned $2900 in June.
Sounds like $2300 of that is monthly recurring revenue from pro subscriptions and the rest comes from display ads shown to free users.
All the more impressive when you consider it’s a side project for Rishi…
It started as an app for my own needs but it quickly started getting traction… Considering I worked on Pika only in my free time and along with my full time-job, I think it grew pretty well.
I find Pika interesting because it basically took something that you can do with Canva – a popular all-in-one graphic design tool – enhanced that one feature and made it a standalone product.
(Xnapper also did this, to the tune of $8000 in 1 month.)

Every Day She Felt More and More Inadequate
Ever heard of Anne Sullivan?
She was the woman who taught a blind and deaf child named Helen Keller how to read and write 
Sullivan did such a good job that in 1904 Keller became the first deaf-blind person to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree.
Anne’s achievement is even more incredible when you learn that she was essentially orphaned as a child, spent time in a poorhouse, and lived much of her own life battling blindness.
Some of Anne’s writings are included in Keller’s book, The Story of My Life
Early on in her position as Helen’s teacher, Anne wrote…
My work grows more absorbing and interesting every day. Helen is a wonderful child, so spontaneous and eager to learn. She knows about 300 words now and A GREAT MANY COMMON IDIOMS, and it is not three months yet since she learned her first word.
It is a rare privilege to watch the birth, growth, and first feeble struggles of a living mind; this privilege is mine; and moreover, it is given me to rouse and guide this bright intelligence.
If only I were better fitted for the great task! I feel every day more and more inadequate.
That last line fascinates me
Because Sullivan has to be one of the best teachers the world has ever seen. She’s been inducted into the Women’s Hall of Fame and Mark Twain referred to her as a miracle worker.
And yet early on she clearly wasn’t confident in her abilities as a teacher…
If only I were better fitted for the great task! I feel every day more and more inadequate.
Goes to show that you don’t need to be the super-confident or self-assured type to achieve success.

It was built by two friends out of frustration at how time-consuming it could be to apply for jobs. They’ve been working on Sonara since 2021 and officially launched in March of 2022 
They’ve posted a few updates about the project on Reddit, including a recent one announcing…
Over 1000 users100 people hired through the platform$85,000 in revenueThe revenue comes from charging job seekers; the more you pay, the more jobs you can automatically apply for. (See their pricing page)
For now, the app works for remote jobs in the US
The founders have been experimenting with different ways to acquire users…
We’re testing social media, SEO, SEM, Paid Ads, email campaigns, and all sorts of growth hacky ways to get to job seekers.
So far, TikTok seems to be the place that has worked best for them…
The first sponsored TikTok post we did got over 280K views, 16K saves, and netted us over 100 paying customers…. So the lesson is don’t promote yourself; have someone else promote you.
Pretty sure this was their first sponsored TikTok post, and the ROI on it was pretty damn good…
The best-performing post we sponsored only cost us $150 and netted almost half a million views.
You can find other TikToks they’ve sponsored via this search 
Also, I get the impression that Sonara got their first users by asking on Reddit “for ideas on where to get users“
That post got 300+ upvotes and likely several thousand views, so it was excellent free marketing for them

Ex-Army Guy’s Shortcut to a 6-Figure Online Business

Steven Foust was once an Army Chief Warrant Officer 
Now he runs an online business that earns him $14,000 per month.
Post his military service, Steven launched NCOonFire.com to help soldiers in their career progression.
(NCO = Non-Commissioned Officer)
The site makes money from memberships, digital products, and counseling
Steven got started by building an online course to help enlisted soldiers get promoted faster.
Unfortunately, he struggled for months to get sales, finding out the hard way that “build it and they will come” does not work for online courses 
But he eventually found a solution…
[Steven] went on Google to figure out who his competitors were. That’s when he came across CutoffScores.com and NCOSupport.com.
The sites were run by Fernando, an ex-military man living in Panama. Steven reached out to him and struck up an affiliate partnership: Fernando would get 50% of each sale if Steven could advertise his product on Fernando’s sites.
That partnership led to five sales the first month.
Soon after, Fernando offered to sell both sites to Steven for $15k apiece.
Steven agreed 
And while that was a pretty big investment, it likely saved Steven a few years of work trying to get regular organic traffic flowing to his own sites.
So two things to try if you’re looking for a shortcut to success…
Partner with an influencer in your niche.See if you can buy an established asset (eg. website, Instagram account, etc)Another interesting thing about Steven: he didn’t start selling his course until 2020.
But…
Steven got out of active duty in the Army in 1998 and has been retired from the Army Reserve since 2005. When he looked back at that experience, though, he realized one thing: he was good at getting promoted fast.
In other words, he created a successful course based on knowledge/experience he had gained decades earlier
Appropriately enough, he advises asking yourself this question if you want to start an online business…
What do you know that nobody knows you know?
It doesn’t have to be recent knowledge; could be something you learned much earlier in your career or even as a kid.

One of the tips Mike shares in the book
planning and running a Kickstarter campaign is often done in a haphazard fashion. To prepare for ours, we didn’t want to leave anything to chance, so we interviewed 15 of the top-earning Kickstarter creators.
It’s a simple but effective hack: before starting any business venture, reach out to people who’ve already done what you’re trying to do and ask if they’ll jump on a call with you.
I did this myself a couple of years ago when I was thinking to start collecting and publishing student reviews on my website
(Before then each review was just an editorial. Our review process has since come a long way.)
I made a list of people who already had established sites built on user reviews, then emailed them individually and asked if they’d be willing to jump on a call with me.
I call this Mentor Fishing.
And it works best when you bait the hook 
Part of what I wrote in those emails…
If possible, I’d love to pay for an hour of your time to hear about the challenges you’ve had growing [your site], and how you’ve overcome them. Especially what has and hasn’t worked for generating user reviews.
That would be very helpful to me as essentially we’re thinking to build similar to [your site] but for a completely different niche.
Let me know if you’d be willing to jump on a call. Any insights you share with me would be kept private, of course.
And if you’re too busy or would just rather not for any reason, no worries at all. I’ve learned a lot already just from browsing your site and going through the interviews you’ve done.
Thanks for your time and keep up the great work.
Thanks to those emails, I ended up on several insightful calls, and only one person accepted my offer to pay for their time.
But even if they had all asked me to pay, it would have been worth the money. There I was learning directly from people who had done exactly what I wanted to do
