When people sign up to the Starter Story mailing list, they receive the welcome email shown in this screenshot.

Pat adds some context…

This single email generates $6K/month on autopilot. It’s just a welcome email, nothing overly salesy.

It’s personal, relevant, and shows the value of Starter Story.

It does it so well people pull out their CCs and pay $ after reading it.

That’s the power of a good email.

In his welcome email, Pat starts with the background of Starter Story, then asks the reader to reply to the email with the emoji, which helps ensure future emails don’t end up in spam.

He goes on to offer a 25% discount in the PS section of the email, saying it’s “for a limited time” only and “the number of spots available is super limited.”

Unclear if that’s real or fake scarcity but it seems to work well regardless. (I’m assuming the conversion rate is quite high.)

Pat says in the comments that he tested many variations before settling on that particular autoresponder email.

I think that’s one of the things he does best: test, test, test.

Another thing he tested on his website: scrolling table of contents

The result of that test…

The table of contents performed significantly better than the control group in terms of time on site… 4-5x increase in time on site, more pages, better bounce rate

As a whole, it also increased the likelihood to subscribe to the Starter Story email list, which was an unexpected benefit
