This 38-Word DM Landed Him a $500 Gig

Published July 6, 2023 by Niall Doherty
Danny Postma tweeted a couple of weeks back…
Looking to hire an email copywriter to write a cart abandonment email sequence for HeadshotPro.
Deliverables:
• email copy + when to send (X minutes after abandonment)
Requirements:
• 100% async, I don’t want to hop on a call
• proof of work + references I can check
Send me the price + requirements via DM
He then shared a screenshot of a DM he received…
Hi Danny. Will write you a 5-email abandoned cart sequence for $500. Email copy only. No design. Delivery in 48 hours. No need to get on a call. Your online content – website, social etc – has everything we need.
That DM was from Nabeel Azeez.
Nabeel’s Twitter bio and pinned tweet go a long way to establishing him as a pro copywriter
No wonder Danny paid him $500 within 5 minutes of seeing that DM.
Danny tweeted a few days later…
Just got back my emails from@NabeelAzeezDXB.
Absolutely blown away by them
Learned so much from them. Every email basically takes away a potential objection a customer could have.
Overdelivered 11 emails instead of 5.

A couple of takeaways
It’s always good to overdeliver, but it’s especially good when your client has clout.

$10K/Month Muslim Dating App in Somalia

Published July 6, 2023 by Niall Doherty
In Somalia, a new dating app is enjoying great success. But in this conservative Muslim society in the Horn of Africa, Guurdoon isn’t a new Tinder for multiplying conquests: it’s aimed at finding a soulmate to start a family.
Launched in October 2022, the application already has tens of thousands of subscribers, according to its founders.
Check out the app on Google Play.
The article continues…
Rahma Hussein has no regrets about paying the 23,000 Somali shillings (less than one euro on the black currency market) to access the application.
Some info on Somalia (source)…
Due to its political and financial situation, Somalia is considered one of the least developed countries in the world.
With an average annual income of 430 USD it is one of the low-income countries.
So what we’re dealing with here is a dating app for a conservative Muslim society in one of the poorest countries in the world with a population of only 17 million people.
And it sounds like it’s earning $10,000+ per month within a year of launch
(“tens of thousands of subscribers” paying €1 each, and I’m assuming that’s a monthly fee)
This kind of story reaffirms my belief that you can build a successful online business pretty much anywhere nowadays.
The key here was identifying and addressing a significant problem in Somali society…
The app was created by the Guryosamo association, founded in 2012 to encourage marriage and help young people wishing to marry but lacking the financial capacity to do so, in this poor country ravaged by civil war…
“Everything society needed has collapsed, including the family, which is its backbone,” explains its director Ahmed Abshir Geedi.
“We have big problems today with marriages. Our young people are rushing to get married and then immediately getting divorced”, he adds.
Meetings with religious leaders, elders, and intellectuals on the subject gave rise to Guurdoon’s idea.
“We understood the need to promote a platform where people of all ages can meet and find each other as partners since our young people are mainly on social networks these days,” he explains.
Is there a problem in your society that you could help solve?
Could be via an app, a website, a freelance service, whatever.
If nothing springs to mind, start asking the people you interact with locally, see what keeps coming up in conversation.

21-Year-Old Entrepreneur: From Idea to $11M in 18 Months

Published July 6, 2023 by Niall Doherty
Here’s a fascinating 2-hour interview with Oliver Brocato…
Oliver is the guy who started Tabs Chocolate…
Pleasure-boosting dark chocolate with high-quality natural ingredients to increase your sex performance
It’s basically chocolate with some supplements that allegedly boost sexual health and performance
You may have seen Tabs being promoted all over social media in recent months.
At only 21 years of age, Oliver has taken the business from idea to $11 million in revenue in only 1.5 years
The idea was key…
Most people start off trying to build the product and brand and then try to figure out how to market it.
Whereas I have a very clear understanding and background of TikTok and viral marketing… so I kind of reverse engineered it… I was like, how do I build a product that’s going to go viral, that lends itself to organically going viral?
So Oliver took two things most people like – sex and chocolate – mashed them together into one product, and marketed the hell out of it.
He took a year to get the product and brand right before launching
He positioned it as a premium product…
We’re not selling chocolate, we’re selling an experience, we’re selling a mood and therefore the whole entire vibe needs to be spot on.
Otherwise how do you justify selling three tiny 20 gram squares of chocolate for $29.99? You can’t justify that.
But I’m not selling you chocolate. I’m selling you the best night of your life with your loved one.
Oliver was living with his parents while building Tabs, feeling like a loser, constantly having to reassure them that his little internet business wasn’t some silly distraction
TikTok was key to marketing the product…
[TikTok has] democratized the ability to go viral. It doesn’t matter if you have 500 followers or 500,000 followers.
So instead of paying some big celebrity for their brand name and their distribution, I want to work with the smaller guys because if they make good content they can hit the “For You” page, they could go viral, and therefore I’m able to stretch my marketing dollars.
That was Oliver’s starting strategy on TikTok.
It got hard to manage 100’s of small influencers so he eventually hired dedicated content creators
He paid one guy $2000 to create and post 30 videos on TikTok…
That month he generated $70,000 to $80,000 in sales.
Back in November he tweeted…
Just paid my top tiktok content creator $12,258 for the month
See the kinds of videos that content creator was producing here.
($12k in one month for making short videos like that, not bad right?)
I wrote up 10 pages of notes from that 2-hour masterclass with Oliver, tons more insights and takeaways shared there
If you’d like to see my notes, follow me on Twitter and DM me the chocolate emoji
I’ll reply with a link to my Google Doc.
Wrapping this one up with words from Oliver…
It’s important that you don’t put people on pedestals and you don’t have these limiting beliefs like, “I can never be like this guy,” or “I’m not smart enough”…
You could do whatever the f*ck you want to do in this life and there is no constraint, there is no ceiling on your potential.
At the end of the day, it’s up to you.

Making a Buck off Avoidance
From the book You Are Not So Smart by David McRaney…
Think about an archetypal punk rocker with chains and spikes, gaudy pants and a leather jacket. Yeah, he bought all of those clothes. Someone is making money off of his revolt.
That’s the paradox of consumer rebellion—everything is part of the system. We all sell out, because we all buy things. Every niche opened by rebellion against the mainstream is immediately filled by entrepreneurs who figure out how to make a buck off those who are trying to avoid what the majority of people are buying.
Try using the concept of avoidance to come up with some business ideas
Ask yourself…
What are people already avoiding? What would they like to avoid but can’t?Come up with a way to help them avoid those things and charge a good price for it.
The Dancing Sausage Charging $50,000 Per Post

Published July 3, 2023 by Niall Doherty
A guilty pleasure of mine is to check out the latest Nobody Sausage videos on one of these platforms
They are short videos of animated sausages – yes, really – dancing or doing a skit
It all started on TikTok in March of 2020 with this 11-second video…
Nobody can dance like meAs you can see, the animation has come a long way in just 3 years.
Brazilian-born Kael Cabral is the creator of Nobody Sausage, and the story goes…
When Kael… posted his first video on TikTok, he wasn’t expecting to blow up, overnight there were thousands of views and followers. And that was the start of an era.
Info on Kael’s background here, including…
Due to his neurodivergence, Kael had difficulties socializing and interacting with other kids. In the meantime he found himself through art, such as drawing and painting which enabled him to create his own comic books.
He majored in Industrial Design because of his passion for arts. At the time there weren’t many options for Visual Arts in Brazil, so he learned it on his own, animation being his main goal.
The process was slow at first, doing frame by frame of scanned photos, but after some time he became more in touch with Motion Graphics. By then, Kael had discovered many Brazilian animators and started learning After Effects.
Looks like Nobody Sausage really took off in October 2022, gaining 16.7 million followers that month alone.
SocialBlade now estimates that the YouTube channel is earning $13.5K – $215.9K per month via ad revenue
Nobody Sausage might be making even more money from brand deals, having worked with the likes of Hugo Boss, Adidas and Netflix.
Info on the Netflix partnership from the NS website…
For Netflix’s premier of the Red Notice movie, Nobody Sausage was invited to recreate the trailer and epic heist – animated Sausage style. After all, it’s what the platform really likes.
The recreated trailers were watched 1.53 times longer and engaged 62% more than the conventional trailer.
(Watch the recreated trailer on TikTok, 1M views.)
Apparently the standard rate to sponsor a creator with 1+ million followers is $10,000+ per post.
So with almost 30M followers across all platforms, Nobody Sausage could well be commanding $100,000+ for each brand deal
But let’s be conservative and say they’re earning $50,000 per deal.
Here’s a recent one they did with Bubbaloo gum
Last words from an interview with Kael…
I start my day slow—I do my daily meditation and yoga practice. After that, I go sit down with my sketchbook and get some creative ideas. I also check TikTok to see what’s trending at the moment.
My most important advice is to have fun while creating content, to make your inner child happy. When my inner child is cheerful and excited, I know I’m in the right place.

New Agency Hits $1 Million Run Rate in 30 Days

Published July 3, 2023 by Niall Doherty
Hunter Hammonds tweets…
My newest agency, ViralCuts, is going to hit a $1m run rate within its first 30 days.
$1m run rate means they’re on track to earn $1 million per year, so revenue for the first month must have been around $83,000
ViralCuts is a short form video agency.
Check their website for examples of their work.
They basically take long videos and break them down into short snappy clips to share on TikTok and the likes, complete with nice animations.
Seems the key for Hunter was convincing creators with big audiences to work with him
The two he mentions…
Sam ParrCodie SanchezOh, and this isn’t Hunter’s first rodeo: he’s been “building businesses for over a decade” and also has a design agency earning $250k per month
He tweets a crash course on how to build an agency…
How to productize yourself and make $30k/moHe writes there…
You can productize any service or skill.
Design. Development. Copywriting. SEO. Video Editing. Podcast Producing. Etc. Etc.
Tellingly, he lists 6 action steps before getting to “Sell Your First Customer”
Hunter also tweeted recently…
Glamorizing quick 6-figure revenues is cool and all
But you don’t see a team working 14 hour days
Doing everything we can to sell, design, and recruit at the highest-level
It’s tremendously hard work. While it might look easy on Twitter – it’s not
No easy shortcuts for this stuff.
Just gotta do the work

Her AI Project: From $500 to $5000 in 8 Weeks

Published July 3, 2023 by Niall Doherty
Remember that guy who went viral by asking ChatGPT to make him as much money as possible, starting with $100?
That launched the #HustleGPT trend, where a bunch of folks online are trying to make fast money with ChatGPT.
One such person is Hazel Lim, who recently tweeted…
Narrated Tours is SOLD
· The Challenge: Go from $500 to $5000 in 8 weeks
· The Team: Me + ChatGPT as my copilot
· The Idea: AI Audio Tour Guide
Check out the website: Narrated Tours
It’s an AI-powered tool that creates custom audio walking tours…
Instantly create guided walking tours for any city. Just tell us how long you want to walk, what city you’re visiting and let our software do the rest.
Looks like Hazel wasn’t earning any revenue from it, but the idea was to build a promising product and quickly sell it for $5000.
Mission accomplished
(You can still see Narrated Tours listed for sale here)
Best I can tell, these were the key tools Hazel used to build the product…
GlideGoogle SheetsChatGPTBut it sounds like the real magic was in her marketing…
How I
maximised valuation
for this project:
Launched on @ProductHunt (#4 Product of the Day)
Did B2B cold outreach. We lined up 5 potential B2B partners to sell our tours.
Backlinks from AI newsletters (40% of our traffic came from here).
Check out her listing on ProductHunt, and her tips for a successful PH launch.
Hazel’s marketing efforts are even more impressive when you consider that she doesn’t have a massive following online: ~3000 Twitter followers seems to be her main audience.
Also, make no mistake: Hazel worked her ass off to build and sell this product
She tweeted back in April…
Bootstrapping a startup while being the DEFAULT parent is hard.
Right now, I’m sobbing because I just ran 5k to get a 1-hr backup childcare after 3 failed busses so that I can work… on a sports centre bench.
Maybe one day, I will look back and smile.
And then in June…
it wasn’t all sunshine and roses.
· I got scared
· I doubted myself
· I got rejected many times
· I couldn’t get the code to work
Most people skip over this but the hustle is HARD.
So while Hazel clearly has some great technical and marketing skills, I’d say it’s her entrepreneurial mindset and emotional resilience that makes her a winner
Also worth checking out from Hazel…

3 Types of Affiliate Marketing
When I first got into affiliate marketing, I thought there was only one way to do it.
But it turns out there are 3 main ways…
Affiliate marketing with a website (SEO)Affiliate marketing with a profile (influencers)Affiliate marketing with advertising (paid ads)
The main advantage of affiliate marketing with a website is that you can get a steady stream of free traffic from Google and other search engines. You do this by creating useful content and optimizing your website for search engines (SEO).
The downside is that it can take several months or even years for a new website to rank well in Google, and you’re at the mercy of search engine algorithm changes. Plus, you actually have to build the website (or buy an existing site) and keep it stocked with quality content.

Apart from brand deals, Alex monetizes her TikTok by linking to this landing page in her bio, where she sells consulting sessions and a digital product, and affiliate links to some of her favorite tools.
People do similar with profiles on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, etc.
The more views and followers you rack up, the more clicks you are likely to get on your affiliate links, and the more money you can make
The advantage of this approach is that you can build up a steady stream of free traffic to your content, so long as you play nice with the algorithm of whatever platform you’re using. And setting up a profile is usually way easier than building your own website.
The downside is that it can take a ton of time and effort to build up and maintain a substantial following. You also have to keep up with any algorithm changes on the platform, and follow their rules so you don’t get kicked off.

I believe Charles was mainly using Facebook ads to promote affiliate offers.
But in theory any kind of advertising can work for this.
The upside of this approach is that you don’t need to spend time building up a following and trying to generate free traffic. Instead, you simply buy your way in front of a target audience and try to convert them into buyers of whatever product you’re promoting.
The downside is that advertising costs money, so you usually need to spend quite a bit before you can earn a profit, if you can ever earn a profit at all
Also, I believe this approach to affiliate marketing isn’t nearly as lucrative as it used to be. Charles Ngo even published and article in 2021 saying “it’s past its glory days” and gives several reasons why.
Anyway, if you want to learn more about affiliate marketing, I have an in-depth primer here.
She Tripled Her Income By Doing This

Published June 29, 2023 by Niall Doherty
Travel blogger Lauren Juliff is featured in a recent BBC article: The workers quitting digital nomadism…
In 2011, Lauren Juliff quit her job at a supermarket in the UK to see the world. She launched a travel website aiming to fund her adventures. To her surprise, she started making enough within a year to be a digital nomad.
“For me, I loved the travel. My dream was always to see as much of the world as possible, so once I made that dream a reality, I was determined to never let it go. Exploring new countries made me feel alive and I learned so much – about new cultures and myself – on a near-daily basis.”
But after five years…
the excitement of the nomadic lifestyle across the world began to ebb. Juliff, now 34, describes her journey – initially idyllic and dream-like – morphing into an exhausting ordeal she was desperate to escape.
Living and working on the move had unintended repercussions on her mental and physical health. “I began to have panic attacks on a daily basis – ones that only stopped whenever I imagined having a home,” she says. The absence of a stable community resulted in a loss of long-term friendships, leading to feelings of loneliness and depression. Juliff’s health suffered as she experienced food poisoning and infections frequently.
Then Lauren found a home base…
Upon settling down in Portugal and signing a lease on an apartment, Juliff saw her income triple within a year. She credits the improvement to the consistency of being in one place and not traveling constantly. Her panic attacks vanished, she joined a gym, started cooking healthy meals and built a solid community of friends.
Lauren’s travel blog is Never Ending Footsteps.
Soon after she moved to Portugal, she reported in an interview that she was earning “typically between $5,000 and $7,000 a month,” mostly from affiliate marketing.
Elsewhere she says she started earning six figures a year around this time
It’s worth noting however that Lauren hasn’t stopped traveling.
The travel schedule currently posted on the sidebar of her website…
April: Australia
May: South Korea
June: England
July: Ireland
August: Mauritius
But she wrote in 2021 that having a home base is big for her…
I stopped travelling full-time back in 2016, when I moved to Portugal, and I’ve maintained a home base ever since… I’m planning on moving to Melbourne in September of this year and to be quite honest, I’m hoping it’ll be my forever home.
I had a similar experience to Lauren.
I quit my day job in 2010 to start traveling the world and working online.
(See some of the many highlights from my travels in this 5-minute video)…
I earned enough via freelancing to travel indefinitely, but after a few years I started to crave more of a home base.
The final straw was Bali
Cool place to visit. But it was tough trying to build a serious business from there. And in 11 months I got seriously ill twice, hospitalized once (dengue).
I haven’t traveled much since then. And my life has improved significantly in many areas, including financially
In conclusion: being a digital nomad is awesome, but there are some heavy trade-offs.

$100K/Month Helping People Start Recruiting Businesses

Published June 29, 2023 by Niall Doherty
Side Hustle Nation has an interview with Jon Chintanaroad, who teaches people how to start a recruiting business…
Recruiters typically charge 20% of the new hire’s salary… That means placing a $100,000 hire could earn [the recruiter] $20,000
Jon writes on his own website
I started my recruiting career in 2009 when I got hired as a recruiter at AppleOne staffing agency in San Francisco. I placed contract, contract-to-hire, and direct hire candidates across several different industries.
… In 2013, I left a secure, promising job to launch my own firm, Aspire Recruiting. My old colleagues and even my parents thought I had gone insane when I walked. We’d go on to achieve huge success in placing engineering and IT professionals.
After 5 years of running his own recruiting agency, Jon transitioned to teaching other people how to start a recruiting business
From another interview he did about a year ago on YouTube…
Jon Chintanaroad shares his nuggets of wisdom, going from $20k-$30k a month to $100k a month in his business, Recruiting Accelerator. He helps recruiters claim their freedom by growing their recruiting business fast using his proven system.
Mapping out Jon’s journey to earning $100,000 per month…
Got a BA in Communications and EconomicsFound an entry-level job as a recruiterWorked for a few of other companies as a recruiter (including Google)Started his own recruiting agencyStarted his own recruiting business training program(Some of the above info via Jon’s LinkedIn)
Jon’s path to $100k/month could be replicated in many other industries…
Get qualified.Gain experience by working 9-to-5 for a while.Gain more experience by becoming your own boss.Eventually teach others how to do the same thing. All that obviously isn’t going to happen overnight.
Jon started in the industry in 2009, so it took him about 13 years to start earning $100,000 per month.
But it sounds like he earned a good living all along the way.
And now he’s printing money
Could you do something like this in an industry you’re familiar with or passionate about?
