This California Ghost Town Earns $30K a Month

It’s an old mining town called Cerro Gordo, located in the mountains of California, not far from Death Valley (map link).
Brent Underwood and a few friends bought the town for $1.4 million back in 2020 
One of those friends is Nathan Barry, the founder of ConvertKit.
A few weeks ago Nathan was on a podcast where he revealed how they’re monetizing the town 
Paraphrasing him from about the 37-minute mark (transcript)…
You have this piece of property up in the mountains of California… it’s in the middle of nowhere.
What could that be worth?
You could rebuild this old hotel, maybe you could run an Airbnb business.
[But] I don’t think people realize that the business has 1.5 million subscribers on YouTube.
It has an email list of a hundred thousand people. There’s a podcast coming out soon. It does $30,000 a month in merchandise sales.
Here’s the YouTube channel, featuring 79 videos, including the first one from April 2020…
That’s about 2 videos per month on average. 32 of the videos have more than 1 million views 
Cerro Gordo also has 112K followers on Instagram, and Brent himself has 214K.
And here’s their online store, where you can buy products like…
T-shirts / hats / hoodiesMugsCoinsPinsPatchesFor $10 apiece, they were even selling old square nails from a hotel that burned down in the town.
Those are now listed as sold out, but there’s a photo showing 100s of them in a couple of buckets. So they could easily have made a few $1000 from selling some 200-year-old scrap metal 
Or, as they pitched it, “a piece of American History” 
Ultimately the key to making this kind of thing work is storytelling.
Brent does a great job sharing the story of Cerro Gordo and his efforts to rebuild it.
Another factor here is simply showcasing a place and/or lifestyle that’s very different from what most people are used to.

Simple Alarm Clock App = $11 Million a Year

The Financial Times recently released their list of High-Growth Companies Asia-Pacific 2023 
Glen Allsopp combed through the 500 companies on the list and highlighted some that caught his eye.
Including…
Alarmy: An alarm clock app for iOS & Android with a twist — you have to complete “missions” in order to turn it off.
Started in South Korea
they’ve had over 65 million downloads worldwide.
[2021] Revenue: $11.21M
3-year growth rate: 292.6%
Check out the app on the App Store and Google Play.
DelightRoom is the company behind the app, and it looks like Alarmy is their only product
It’s a freemium app, with premium pricing starting at $4.99.
Although according to a 2017 article by the founder, “Alarmy’s main source of revenue [was] advertising”.
Here’s how founder Jaemyung Shin came up with the idea (source) 
“I put my phone in the bathroom before I went to bed. Next morning, when the alarm rang, I had to go to the bathroom to turn it off,” he said in an interview with Yonhap News Agency last week. “That was the most unfailing way to get me up on time. And I wanted to make this pattern automated on my smartphone.”
His Alarmy app, first launched in 2012 and now available free both for Android and iOS, is different from basic alarm clock apps that are simple to set to snooze.
The so-called “photo from a location” function is its signature feature. Users mark their routine destination, which is far from their bed, and the only way to dismiss the alarm is to take a photo in that place.
The app was initially called Sleep If U Can.

Humble beginnings.
I get the impression they’ve seen mostly organic growth over the years. People would find the app on an app store, try it out, find it useful, and leave a positive rating and/or recommend it to a friend

I don’t think using an alias is necessarily a red flag, and I found nothing negative about their real names online.
It’s also worth noting that the creator of this video is promoting his own offer.
And most of the creator’s comments felt like over-the-top ramblings…
A vast majority of comments backed up BBT…
But there seems to be evidence that brings some of the positive comments into question.
For example, this looks like an account set up on YouTube solely to post comments defending Bear Bull Traders…

Next, while looking through Twitter, I saw a tweet claiming Andrew Aziz plagiarized from another trading book word for word…

In my opinion, this isn’t enough evidence of flat-out wrongdoing by Andrew. One possible explanation is that he could have hired a ghostwriter who copied that text.
While I’d say it’s his responsibility to ensure this doesn’t happen, it doesn’t mean he did it intentionally. So we may want to give him the benefit of the doubt on this one.
Another tweet from @GuruLeaks calls out a Bear Bull Instructor named Thor Young. They claim he posted proof of earnings from a paper trading (play money) account…
Source: TwitterBut despite these few theories, I find the opinions of the credible sources mentioned above more compelling. And they suggest that Andrew Aziz and Bear Bull Traders are reputable.

The message is that business is hard because we tend to look for easy solutions.
To avoid this trap…
We do something actually difficult.
We go where others fear. We go where others are scared of the unknown.
Usually in business we call this “Barriers to entry”, yet most people see this as “Barriers to actually taking action and changing your life”.

In the video, Shlomo does a good job breaking down the business and offers some questions to ask the seller before putting in an offer
He notes that the $95K sale price makes a lot more sense once you see that the monthly profit is only $4955.

The domain was registered at the end of November 2022.
Site owner Lior Neu-ner reported at the start of May (ie. 5 months later) that he’d already grown it to 19,000 monthly clicks and $2000 in monthly recurring revenue.
Lior has done that despite little experience with SEO, saying he’s been “learning how to do it from scratch”
Fittingly, his newsletter is called I Have No Idea What I’m Doing 
Remote Rocketship is effectively a remote job board, but Lior explains here how it’s different from competitors…
most existing job boards don’t have enough jobs because companies need to pay to list their openings, or they don’t have good information on the companies listed and a good way to filter through them.
To solve this, I scrape recruiting sites like Workable, Greenhouse and Lever where most job openings are hosted. I then parse them for useful information such as salaries and hiring locations. I then combine this with more useful information I scrape online about the companies e.g. funding, company size.

3-Year-Old Canadian Newsletter Business Sold for $5 Million

The business is The Peak 
It started as a single newsletter in 2020 and is now a fully-fledged media company producing multiple newsletters, podcasts and events.
From a recent press release…
Founded in 2020, The Peak serves busy Canadian professionals and business leaders with the top global business, finance, and tech stories of the day packaged in a smart, fast, and easily digestible format. The aggregate purchase price of $5 million is comprised of $3.5 million cash on closing and a $1.5 million promissory note.
Co-founder Brett Chang shared on LinkedIn how the idea for The Peak came about…
the start of the pandemic and Taylor, Alex and I were figuring out what was next for us.
We loved Morning Brew and couldn’t figure out why nobody was writing a similar product for
…
We consumed every article / podcast about their business, and developed our MVP (minimum viable product).
We brainstormed names and came up with The Peak. It was a business term (market peak) and also Canadian (mountain peaks). Our friends at August spun up the logo.
A week later, we started writing…
The first newsletter went out on July 16, 2020 and we got it out every weekday after that.
It took them 5 months to reach 8000 subscribers…
We got our first 1,000 subscribers through brute force. We posted on our personal LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram accounts with a story on why we founded The Peak and what readers could expect.
But the real growth came from direct 1-to-1 messaging. We went through our contact list and individually messaged anyone who might be interested
They sold $4160 of ads in those first 5 months
Here’s how…
Set pricing at $250 for one week of adsDeveloped a media kitMade a list of brands they thought would be a good fitFound contact infoSent out short emails (template shared here)Out of 110 emails sent, they only got 20 responses (18%).
But that was enough to sell $4160 of ads.
Over the next several months, they sold $150,000 more
