The Difference Between a Good Day and a Bad Day

📖 From the book Atomic Habits by James Clear…

The difference between a good day and a bad day is often a few productive and healthy choices made at decisive moments. Each one is like a fork in the road, and these choices stack up throughout the day and can ultimately lead to very different outcomes.

Those words in the book are accompanied by this diagram 👈

When I find my day going off the rails, I try to pause and ask myself this question…

How can I still make this a great day?

Even if something bad has happened, asking that question usually reminds me that that whole day doesn’t have to be ruined.

For example, say I have a terrible night of sleep and am dreading a busy day ahead.

I try to ask myself…

How can I still make this a great day?

Asking that question helps me reframe the day as an opportunity, and come up with a few ideas to not just endure the day, but to make it awesome 😍

Try it yourself and let me know how it goes.

Started Travel Blogging 3 Years Ago, Now Earns $50K/Month

Shelley MarmorFounder of Travel Mexico Solo $50,000 monthly revenue from travel blogs
Published August 10, 2023 by Fardeen KhanReviewed and edited by Niall Doherty

Shelley Marmor was working in corporate America for 15 years before deciding to pursue her passion for travel blogging in 2020.

She launched her first site, Travel Mexico Solo, after traveling solo in Mexico for a year 🇲🇽

Initially, Shelley wrote about her own travels but wasn’t making much money.

💡 Then she had a big realization…

Nobody cares about me traveling around Mexico. They care about how I can help them travel Mexico.

On advice from other bloggers, Shelley invested in courses to learn SEO and niched down to just Mexico.

Her thinking, via a recent interview

I can’t compete with 15-year-old sites like [popular travel blog] Nomadic Matt’s. But in a niche, I can cut to the front of the line.

Within 3 years, Shelley grew her site – and a few others – into a business consistently earning $50,000+ per month 🤑

She has display ads on her sites from multiple networks, but it sounds like affiliate marketing is her main source of revenue.

From the interview…

“I started making money before I had much traffic. The income came first, then traffic grew over time.” She never had a viral “traffic explosion” moment. Instead, it was many small wins that compounded.

About a year and a half into her journey, Shelley started hiring writers to help create content. She now has a team of 4 writers, an editor, and a blog manager 💪

Along the way she also started additional niche sites that focus on specific Mexican destinations…

Travel To OaxacaTulum Travel SecretsTravel To Merida

The last one earns $5k/month from affiliate marketing on its own 🤯 proving that even a tiny niche travel blog can earn a good income.

(Could you start something like that for your hometown or a place you know well? 🤔)

Shelley says…

Not every site will be a 7-figure business. But you can be happy with a 6-figure site, then replicate it. This means multiple 6-figure sites can equal a 7-figure business.

Her #1 tip…

No one starts perfect. But no one who’s successful didn’t start.

He Bought a $1500 YouTube Channel and Earned $__,___

Jack Massey WelshJack Massey WelshYouTuber -$1700 from buying YouTube channels
Published August 10, 2023 by Fardeen KhanReviewed and edited by Niall Doherty

Here’s a video from Jack Massey Welsh explaining what happened when he bought two YouTube channels for a combined $1700 approx…

Best I can tell, he bought the channels via Accs-Market.com 💵

The first channel he bought…

Pretty Woman Kitchen100,000+ subscribersNo videos$349 price tag

The second…

Fufik100,000+ subscribersAnimated kids content$1400 price tag (bought using Dogecoin)

While the channels he bought were legit and he did get access to them after escrow, he noticed that they were mostly dead ☠

They either had community guidelines strikes or were on the verge of losing monetisation.

Jack realized this was a mistake…

Do not do this. This is stupid. Not only is it kind of completely pointless to purchase another YouTube channel because there’s no way it’s ever gonna work, you’re not gonna be able to just carry on where the other channel left off, what are you thinking?

He tried uploading new videos to these channels, and as expected got almost no views or engagement 😭

(Though his 15-second Pretty Woman Kitchen comeback video is hilarious 😂)…

Fufik quickly lost its monetization status after Jack unpublished some of the private videos.

So he ended up earning pretty much nothing from the 2 channels 🤬

Jack’s takeaways from this…

The only way it could ever work is if you were buying a faceless channel that had like an AI voice that you could just continue to replicate and also that channel was still successful.

Whereas all of the channels that you see [for sale] on these websites, they’re all kind of dead. And that’s why they’re for sale because people are just trying to make a little last bit of extra money.

So while you can technically purchase other channels, it is very risky and unlikely to be worth your time or investment.

The exception is if you can find an active and compliant channel in your niche. But those rarely end up for sale

$40,000/Month Selling Sex Toys on the Internet

Dainis GraverisDainis GraverisFounder of Sexual Alpha $40,000 monthly revenue
Published August 10, 2023 by Fardeen KhanReviewed and edited by Niall Doherty

(In case it’s not obvious, this one’s probably NSFW 🙈)

Dainis Graveris is the founder of SexualAlpha, a site that provides sex toy reviews, guides, and education.

He revealed lots of details about the site in an interview last October, and shared via email recently that the site now earns “an average of 40,000 USD in monthly affiliate commissions” 💰

The backstory…

In 2008, Dainis was working as web designer at an agency and started 1stWebDesigner.com to blog about web design and development. He sold that site after 4 years.

Then…

I am a passionate dancer. At that time, kizomba piqued my interest, so I moved countries and created a dancing passion project – OnKizomba. Then reality hit hard. Creating videos of myself and other people dancing won’t pay my bills.

So I returned home without a lot of money in my pocket and got a regular job brick-and-mortar style from our next-door neighbor – a sex toy store (surprise, surprise). And what a wonderful surprise that was!

That was my AHA moment.

Working at this store gave him a good insight into the industry, which led to him launching SexualAlpha in early 2020 🚀

But he started out testing the waters on an established platform with lots of traffic…

After keyword research and competitor analysis, I wrote 100 articles on Medium.com to test the theories. I did all that in 2 months. Crazy grand!

Three months later, my Medium profile [link] received 2M monthly visits. Then, I added affiliate links to see what sells. I knew it was a matter of time till I got banned [by Medium] for either sexual topics or affiliate links. It lasted around 3 months. But then I already learned that sex toys sell a lot easier than education.

He then moved the articles to SexualAlpha and continued creating content 📝

Dainis tried sharing his content on social media but realized no one would hit the share button because of the topic 😕

So…

I went ahead and focused on SEO, updated our existing content, analyzed new keywords, and got new content out. While regularly publishing quality content helped us find potential buyers and keep our avid readers, it wasn’t enough to significantly boost our traffic. I knew we needed to reach out and make our online presence known.

After growing to 30-50k monthly visits, Dainis knew he needed help.

He built up a remote team to handle content operations and email marketing. This freed him up to focus on high-level tasks and relationships.

Reaching out and building relationships in the industry was key…

I used my email, LinkedIn, and socials to connect with sex toy brands, shops, and relevant online platforms – anyone within the sexual wellness industry. I then started building relationships by contributing quality content and sharing my expertise across platforms. I got featured. Our website got featured. All these relationship-building efforts boosted our online presence.

Dainis’ advice to new entrepreneurs 👇

Experience is your best teacher; you’ll never learn the industry and how it works if you don’t take the plunge.

My main takeaway from this one is how a big failure can pave the way for a big success.

Dainis only ended up working at that sex toy store because his “dancing passion project” had failed miserably 😔

Reminds me of Derek Sivers’ favorite fable.

Side Project of his Side Project Earns $75,000+ a Year

UpenUpenFounder of Micro SaaS Idea $75,000+ estimated annual revenue
Published August 7, 2023 by Fardeen KhanReviewed and edited by Niall Doherty

Check out Micro SaaS Idea, a freemium newsletter that likely makes $75,000+ per year.

A recent free edition 👈

The newsletter makes money in two ways…

Paid subscriptions at $150 per year.

With around 500 subscribers, this should be bringing in $75K annually.

Sponsorships on the free newsletter.

Based on sponsorship prices, I suspect this is bringing in an additional $1000 per month.

The newsletter is run by Upen, who originally launched a Google Sheets website builder called Siteoly in 2020 as a side project.

After getting his first customers and reaching $1000 in annual recurring revenue (ARR), Upen created 👉 this directory showcasing similar startups that were making $1,000 in monthly recurring revenue.

(I think the idea there was to get more eyes on Siteoly, since that’s what he used to build the directory.)

Upen planned to launch a Substack newsletter called Nextidea alongside the directory.

But then the directory went viral 📈 hitting the front page of Hacker News before the newsletter launched.

That exposure led 132 people to sign up to Upen’s not-yet-active newsletter.

His journey since then 👇

Renamed Nextidea to Micro SaaS Idea.Started collecting feedback on Twitter before sending out the first issue. Also posted on Reddit beforehand and got lots of upvotes due to thorough research and attention to detail.Sent out the first edition of the newsletter in Nov 2020.Just 2 months after launch it was In Feb 2021 it made $1k+ after launching on Product Hunt and getting to #1 product of the day.By May 2021 it had reached $10k in revenue.

Now ~3 years later Micro SaaS Idea has over 25,000 free subscribers, a community of 500+ paid subscribers, and is earning more than $75,000 per year 🤑

A few months after launch, Upen shared some of his key learnings via ….

I started lean on this. No domain. No web page. Just nothing. Starting with a simple substack but with super high-quality content. Only after I crossed $250 MRR, I bought a domain name two weeks before.

Interesting how this business grew out of something completely different.

Upen was initially trying to gain traction with Siteoly when he stumbled across the idea and opportunity for the newsletter 💡

Goes to show the power of taking action: even if you don’t have a great idea, get working on some not-so-great ideas and you’re likely to stumble across something better once in motion.

Aspirin & Band-Aids

From Covey, Stephen Covey’s classic book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People

People are intrigued when they see good things happening in the lives of individuals, families, and organizations that are based on solid principles…

And their immediate request is very revealing of their basic paradigm. “How do you do it? Teach me the techniques.” What they’re really saying is, “Give me some quick fix advice or solution that will relieve the pain in my own situation.”

They will find people who will meet their wants and teach these things; and for a short time, skills and techniques may appear to work. They may eliminate some of the cosmetic or acute problems through social aspirin and band-aids.

But the underlying chronic condition remains, and eventually new acute symptoms will appear. The more people are into quick fix and focus on the acute problems and pain, the more that very approach contributes to the underlying chronic condition.

In other words…

The more you get caught up looking for shortcuts, the longer the journey is likely to take.

Makes much more sense to focus on doing the work, developing legit skills, building real relationships… you know, the non-sexy stuff that takes significant time and effort.

The sooner you cut the fluff and focus on those things, the faster you’ll progress.

Sex Chocolate Guy Has Mastered TikTok Marketing

Oliver BrocatoOliver BrocatoFounder of Study Buddy $35,000+ revenue
Published August 7, 2023 by Fardeen KhanReviewed and edited by Niall Doherty

Remember Oliver Brocato, the 21-year-old founder who we previously profiled here?

His sex-themed chocolate business (Tabs) generated $11 million in just 18 months using TikTok 💰

Now he’s back with a new business called Study Buddy, an AI tool that basically helps students cheat on tests and assignments 😏

He recently tweeted

studybuddy made $35k+ in revenue COMPLETELY off-season, during the beta-test. 🚀

got nothing fancy, just a webfront and a decently functional product.

How does he do it?

👉 TikTok user generated content (UGC).

UGC = the videos of random people talking about different products you see on TikTok.

Videos like these…

No resson to be failing these days 🤷🏽‍♂️Ai will save all of us students 😤

In another twitter thread, he shared his playbook on how you can do TikTok UGC, right…

“how u found and trained ur creators ❓

let’s end the discussion here on out: u don’t train em ❌

u hire them, let them do their thing, and test the weeds.

if they smack & are consistent w/ the posts, u retain them.💰

if they’re full of shit and produce subpar work, u don’t have time for that bs.

use these parameters to judge creators KPIs:

✅ quality content
✅ posting consistency
✅ viral potential

don’t see these things? cut ‘em.

this is it.

if you’re not a fan of simplicity, tough luck.

the process is straightforward and far from complex – simple and, a bit boring.

Oliver says he’s “taking this saas to ~ 1 mill/month in j 4 months” 🚀

And I wouldn’t bet against him.

But I reckon the key here again might be his choice of product.

As Oliver said in that 2-hour interview back in April…

Most people start off trying to build the product and brand and then try to figure out how to market it.

Whereas I have a very clear understanding and background of TikTok and viral marketing… so I kind of reverse engineered it… I was like, how do I build a product that’s going to go viral, that lends itself to organically going viral?

Sex chocolate lends itself to organically going viral 🍫

As does an app that helps students cheat 😈

Seth Godin drives the point home

just about every successful product or service is the result of smart marketing thinking first, followed by a great product that makes the marketing story come true.

One Dude in his Underpants Earning $200K/Year

Maciej CeglowskiMaciej CeglowskiFounder of Pinboard $200,000 approximate annual revenue
Published August 7, 2023 by Fardeen KhanReviewed and edited by Niall Doherty

Maciej Ceglowski is the founder of Pinboard, a social bookmarking platform that allows users to save and share links 🔗

Pinboard is a paid service that charges users $22/year.

Maciej used to share his revenue numbers every year, but his last report was in 2020.

His revenue numbers over the years 👇

2010 = $117K2011 = $178K2012 = $181K2013 = $175K2014 = $193K2015 = $160K2016 = $234K2017 = $259K2018 = $253K2019 = $222K2020 = $212K

So it looks like revenue was declining when Maciej stopped reporting, but those numbers above average to about $200K/year for 11 years 😎

Quite impressive given that Maciej once described the business as…

one dude in his underpants somewhere who has five windows open to terminal servers

Also, I thought social bookmarking had died a long time ago, but apparently not 🤷‍♂️

Delicious was the VC-backed social bookmarking giant back in the day, raising $2 million in funding and being something of a poster child for Web 2.0.

Amazingly, Maciej bought Delicious in 2017 for only $35,000 🤯

Seems a big part of Maciej’s success is the Pinboard fandom….

There’s been fan-fic written about Pinboard, which I thought was awesome. I think that’s the litmus test. I don’t know if it goes that far, but fans have been really nice to me and they’ve responded in a very friendly way to my overtures so I would say I get along with them. I try to understand their specific needs and uses maybe more than some other sites do.

Apparently, back when they were competitors, Pinboard was able to capitalize on a silly mistake by Delicious.

Delicious redesigned their site, fans didn’t like it, and Pinboard positioned itself as a fan-first alternative that would listen to users 👂

A good example of this is a famous Google Doc where Pinboard users could share their thoughts. It’s a compilation of tutorials, discussions, feature requests, etc.

The conversations are still there, with Maciej’s comments in orange.

Maciej also regularly met up with users….

I’ve been having meetups in different cities, trying to get tech people involved in areas where we can help locally with volunteering… In the course of those meetings I’ve actually met a lot of Pinboard users and a lot of fandom people who use Pinboard.

I reckon Maciej’s personal and human approach is what set him apart from Delicious and ultimately led to Pinboard’s dominance.

This story also begs the question…

What other big VC-backed internet companies that “failed” might actually do well as a one-person or small-team business? 🤔

You might get some ideas from these lists…

(Btw, I heard about Pinboard via BoringCashCow, a site worth checking out for breakdowns of “boring businesses”)
