$14 Million a Year Website with Zero Employees

Published August 28, 2023 by Fardeen Khan
BuiltWith is an app that reveals the technologies used by any website
Just enter a URL and it will tell you the exact frameworks, analytics tools, advertising platforms etc. that the site uses. (Here’s the info for ebizfacts.com)
According to a recent profile, this simple idea turned into a hugely successful business for founder Gary Brewer…
$14 million in annual recurring revenue
Gary attended a startup conference in Sydney way back in 2006 and had two big takeaways…
Anyone can start a businessHe disliked corporate politics and pitching productsGary spent the next few months building small side projects while working a full-time job. Though the projects ultimately failed, he enjoyed the experience.
While researching ideas, Gary would analyze other websites by looking at their source code. He noticed he could identify certain technologies based on the code
This sparked the idea for BuiltWith: a site that would reveal the tech stack behind any website. The domain was somehow still available, so Gary got to work building his database of web technologies.
He officially launched BuiltWith and immediately got traction
One of the key moments was when Gary met Raymond King of AboutUs, “an internet domain directory containing information about millions of businesses.”
Raymond loved the idea and added BuiltWith links to every website profile on his site. This resulted in millions of backlinks and growth in traffic
The free version of BuiltWith shows what tech your competitors use and the paid version is a database of potential customers and leads. You can find every website using specific keywords, tech, location, spending, etc.
For example, a company with a WordPress alternative can use BuiltWith to identify sites using WordPress and pitch them
This is likely why over 50% of BuiltWith’s traffic is direct: companies go straight there to gain a competitive advantage.
In the early 2010s, Andrew Rogers came on as co-founder.
He writes….
I met a very softly spoken Gary Brewer. He was a solo founder that still had a full time job, BuiltWith was a side project that he’d worked on all evening…
I only really needed one simple question answered, were people paying….
…..turns out he had revenue, $40k/month. I had to check this a few times, not $4k, $40k. I suggested he quit his day job and go full time but he was nervous about how stable the revenue would prove to be and he had a good boss that relied on him who he felt a sense of obligation to.
Crazy to me that Gary was earning $40k/month and was still nervous about quitting his day job
Anyway, Andrew went on to handle the sales side of business and noted…
I was trying to implement systems for a 50 person company on a 1 person business. We didn’t need a CRM to track leads or sales. Good customers didn’t email, they just bought. After 3-4 emails, the probability of a sale dropped to zero.
In the end…
Andrew eventually left the company while remaining as an advisor. And BuiltWith is now completely run by Gary (with some content folks for the blog)
No sales team, no customer support, no engineers.
It’s a completely automated and fully functional business generating tens of millions of dollars a year.

Paid Ads Strategy of an Exploding AI Newsletter

Published August 28, 2023 by Fardeen KhanReviewed and edited by Niall Doherty
Anthony Castrio tweeted in September last year…
Starting a new daily newsletter.
Going to grow it from 0 to 10,000 subscribers and start to monetize as fast as inhumanly possible.
I’ll be building the whole thing in public right here
Now, almost 11 months later, his daily newsletter about AI called Bot Eat Brain has 24,000+ subscribers
Anthony charges as much as $1999 for a sponsorship package and recently tweeted…
Passed $5k in ad revenue for August so far. Stretch goal is $6k. I think we’ll hit it.
It took 6 months for Anthony to get his first 1000 subscribers
Then he started tinkering with paid ads…
Now I understand why Facebook is a billion-dollar company. After running a profitable ad, my first thought was:
“Now, exactly how fast can I give them all the money that I have?”
Next, he did something unusual
I sold 20% of the Bot Eat Brain newsletter to @DBogachek for $10,000.
A couple of weeks later he wrote…
My AI newsletter @BotEatBrain just passed 5,000 subscribers. We’ve added more than 2,000 new subscribers in the last 10 days.
I reckon a huge part of this was running ads funded by that $10,000 injection.
This seems to be when the newsletter really took off
Anthony’s response when asked about his biggest growth contributor….
Right now paid ads are #1 followed by word of mouth and shoutouts in other newsletters.
He also tweeted recently…
I spent over $10,000 on Facebook Ads last month.
I got back over $7,000 from Sparkloop.
My effective paid CPA for new readers is about $0.25 cents.
I make about $0.40 cents per reader per month.
You do the math.
This is why newsletters are exploding.
The way Sparkloop works: you get a popup after you sign up for Bot Eat Brain suggesting other newsletters to subscribe to; if you go ahead, Anthony gets paid for that referral
Sparkloop recommendations can also be links inside the newsletter. See the “recommended reading” section in a recent Bot Eat Brain newsletter.
Lastly, given how instrumental Facebook ads have been for growing Anthony’s newsletter, you might want to check out his ads here
Looks like he’s been running one primary ad since June, nothing fancy, just simple text.
But I bet Anthony experimented with lots of ads before landing on that one as the most effective

Niche Mac Apps Earn Him $6,000/Month

Published August 28, 2023 by Fardeen KhanReviewed and edited by Niall Doherty
Alin Panaitiu is a software developer from Romania
He left his corporate job a year ago and has been living off the revenue generated by his macOS apps.
Lunar.fyi seems to be his most successful project. It’s an app that gives you more control over external monitors (brightness, volume, etc)
Alin also runs an app studio called The Low-Tech Guys with a friend, where they hire themselves out for $120/hour to build apps for other businesses.
In a recent Hacker News post, Alin notes that Lunar and his other apps are making between $3,500 and $9,000 per month in revenue …
It’s not much for some parts of the world. But I’m well enough from this that I even took the time to build a small calendar app from which all the funds will go to my brother’s college costs so he can stop working 12h/day jobs.
He also shares a key insight he had about building apps…
Before this I tried creating paid web services but none took off. I realized I actually don’t use any indie web product after 8 years of professional coding. I’m only using web products from big companies like Google, fly.io, Amazon etc.
Desktop apps on the other hand, most that I use and love are made by single developers.
This is why Alin has focused on building macOS apps rather than trying to create yet another SaaS. And it’s worked out well for him
Might be worth thinking along these lines yourself.
Is your small business trying to compete with massive companies?
Could you pivot to an adjacent niche where the competition isn’t so tough?

His First 10 eCom Stores Failed Miserably
Part of a rant on Reddit…
Every single Reddit post shares how this person started a million-dollar business, such as making $10K in a day selling buttons or how a 17-year-old made $50K selling a card game.
Or better yet, how I made $30,000 in a single weekend dropshipping backpacks.
However, what you don’t hear are the people with multiple failed businesses struggling daily.
… These stories fail to consider survivor’s bias and the numerous failed software, grand ideas, TikTok brands, and startups that you’ll never see.
Very true.
But it’s also true that we don’t hear many stories about failed athletes, or failed musicians, or failed actors.
Those stories simply aren’t very interesting
Well, not unless they lead to eventual success.
Which is the story of one commenter…
First 10 ecom stores failed miserably, 11th made 200k in revenue with barely any profit, but the 12th is a whole other story.
They’re all learning experiences and you absolutely need them to succeed in the end.
(Pretty sure his 11th store was selling a blackhead vacuum, more on that here.)
Anyway, the point is that success in business takes time, and you should expect to fail a bunch before you achieve success
That’s just how it works.
Same way the vast majority of athletes, musicians and actors don’t achieve success right out of the gate. They also have to pay their dues, practice their craft relentlessly, and be ready to pounce on opportunity when it arises
Partial Blindness Led Him To a $1000/Month Business

Published August 24, 2023 by Fardeen KhanReviewed and edited by Niall Doherty
Daniel Nguyen is the founder of KTool, a freemium tool that allows users to send news articles, newsletters, and RSS feeds to their Kindle device.
According to a recent interview with Daniel, KTool recently hit the $1,000 per month mark
The idea first came to him when he read a Hacker News post…
Ask HN: I’m a software engineer going blind, how should I prepare?Daniel has worn glasses since age 5 and is blind in his right eye, with doctors saying there is no chance of a cure…
I was genuinely scared. Like holy crap, if my left eye stops working, my life is done. Since then I’ve been very conscious about time spent on computer screens. That’s when I started using Kindle-related products: to offload as many reading materials as possible to the Kindle.
He soon ran into limitations like not being able to read web articles within Kindle, which led him to build KTool
When building the first version, Daniel focused on solving one core problem: taking an article link and converting it into Kindle’s native format.
He soft-launched KTool on Twitter in February 2022 and got his first sales when someone mentioned it on Hacker News
Daniel’s biggest learning in the early days…
To be vulnerable and tell my story on why I built the product. I was afraid that it would feel too personal, but to my surprise, it was well received.
Since launching, App Store Optimization (ASO) has become the most effective acquisition channel for KTool, constantly bringing in traffic without ongoing work.
Daniel was also able to rank #1 for important keywords related to Kindle and reading
His strategy now is to double down on what already works by investing more in ASO and SEO.
Last words from Daniel
Getting started is always the hardest. The fear of failure is strong. Rejections hurt. My advice is to get past that ‘first scary moment’ as fast as you can. Just start and figure out the rest on the go.

Simple Scrabble Site Raking in $300K+ a Year

Published August 24, 2023 by Fardeen KhanReviewed and edited by Niall Doherty
Check out AllScrabbleWords.com, a simple site that helps people find words for the popular board game Scrabble.
The site has been around since 2012 and has looked the same since 2015 with a “domain authority” of 28 out of 100 (via Ahrefs).
According to SimilarWeb, the site gets 11 million visits per month. It ranks for a broad range of Scrabble-related keywords that drive a ton of traffic from search engines
Looks like the site is monetized entirely through Google Adsense display ads.
The Adsense calculator estimates a site with 11 million monthly visits to earn $300K to $700K per year from different geographies
However, the site only seems to be available in a handful of countries. I had to use a USA VPN to access it.
(No idea why they don’t allow all countries to access the site; they’re losing out on a lot of traffic and revenue.)
Anyway, the site owner has still built a nice passive income stream by creating a resource for an already popular game.
I reckon there could be other opportunities in the board game niche to explore
The most popular board games of all-time (source)…
ChessCheckersMonopolyScrabbleClueBattleshipTrivial PursuitBackgammonCandyLandRummikubChess is a fiercely competitive niche nowadays.
For example…
Elite Chess: From $17/hr to 6-Figure Side HustleChess.com: $50 Million in Annual RevenueBut there might be some low hanging fruit for the other games on the list above.
Could be worth spending a little time on keyword research, see what you can find

From Non-English Speaking Waiter to $2 Million in Sales

Published August 24, 2023 by Fardeen KhanReviewed and edited by Niall Doherty
In a recent interview, Jim Cockrum interviews Cong Tai Ha, who moved from Vietnam to the United States in 2019, not knowing any English…
Cong started working as a waiter in a restaurant, trying to make ends meet, but he wanted to start his own business at some point.
In 2020, he came across e-commerce and Amazon through Facebook ads
(Apparently he didn’t know what Amazon was before that.)
The ads got Cong curious. He eventually signed up for Jim’s Proven Amazon Course (reviewed here) and started selling on Amazon
He credits Jim’s course for helping him realize the importance of…
Building systemsOptimizing processesHiring a teamTwo years after starting his Amazon biz, Cong quit his job as a waiter to go full-time on e-commerce.
Fast forward to today, and Cong is on track to do $2 million in sales this year, having recently hit $100,000 in monthly revenue
Note however that his profit margin is only about $10K per month, which is fairly typical when selling on Amazon.
Still, it’s a life-changing amount of money compared to what Cong was earning as a waiter just a couple years ago
Jim says at the top of the interview…
This is one of those excuse-killing episodes, because our guest today has been in the United States only a couple years… he was very nervous because he didn’t think his English was good enough to be on a podcast… he’s worked very hard, he’s learned a second language, he’s hired a team… he has $2 million in sales so far…
Hopefully you’ll take inspiration from Cong’s story.
He’s obviously an exceptional person to have achieved so much in so little time, but imagine how people viewed him in that restaurant a few years ago.
Just a random waiter who couldn’t speak English very well… nobody special.
But he had massive potential, potential that he probably doubted himself many times.
Thankfully, he didn’t let those doubts or tough circumstances hold him back

10-Day Challenge Led To This $2500/Month App

Published August 21, 2023 by Fardeen KhanReviewed and edited by Niall Doherty
Fernando Pessagno is the founder of aiCarousels, a tool that lets you easily create carousel posts for social media.
In a recent tweet, Fernando reveals that he’s already at $2500 in monthly recurring revenue, just 3 months after launch
His first version of the product was very basic…
It got the job done, kept me accountable, and was good enough to check if there was interest out there. It also built momentum going forwards (shipping and rolling updates are way more exciting than building forever!)
Fernando has been live tweeting updates, launched on Product Hunt and someone with a big following mentioned his product… all of which helped get his first ~20 customers
aiCarousels almost didn’t happen though…
I was not really sure about the idea. Then I challenged myself to a 10-day #buildinpublic challenge (you can binge watch the whole saga here)
I was thinking that worst case scenario, I just lose 10 days, and I still could learn a thing or two!
Maybe you could follow Fernando’s lead: put a time constraint on a project and get the first version shipped no matter what.

The Art of Starting Small and Building Momentum
Seth Godin published his first blog post in January 2002.
And I believe he has published at least once a day since, amounting to 8000+ days
Accordingly, he has one of the biggest blogs in the world.
I went through some of his best posts and found a few things in common.
One is his emphasis on just getting started.
He writes in one post
Beginning is underrated.
Merely beginning.
With inadequate preparation, because you will never be fully prepared.
With imperfect odds of success, because the odds are never perfect.
Begin. With the humility of someone who’s not sure, and the excitement of someone who knows that it’s possible.
From another post….
Start small, start now.
This is much better than, ‘start big, start later.’
One advantage is that you don’t have to start perfect.
You can merely start.
And starting doesn’t have to be complicated…
Find ten people.
Ten people who trust you/respect you/need you/listen to you…Those ten people need what you have to sell, or want it.
And if they love it, you win.
If they love it, they’ll each find you ten more people (or a hundred or a thousand or, perhaps, just three).
Repeat.
This approach of starting small and growing organically is very different from the popular model of huge marketing launches and press releases.
But according to Seth, simple is better…
the idea of a ‘launch’ and press releases and the big unveiling is nuts. Instead, plan on the gradual build that turns into a tidal wave.
His own blog is a testament to that
