$3K/Month Selling Digital Backdrops for Photographers

Published May 11, 2023 by Niall Doherty
Check out this DigitalArtscapeFinds on Etsy
That store launched in February and sells digital backdrops that photographers can use as backgrounds for people they photograph.
In a 9-minute video, Mark on Business reveals that the store did $6,870 in revenue in its first 2 months …
(Looks like Mark is using something like EverBee to see analytics for any Etsy store.)
Mark goes on to show how you can create similar backdrops yourself using Midjourney to do 90% of the work.
It all sounds great in theory, but remember there are 2 parts to every business…
Creating the product / delivering the serviceGetting customers / clientsMark mainly shows you how to do the first part, which is great, but I’d argue that the second part is usually the hardest
A few months back, Mark set up his own Etsy store selling digital templates. He’s been sharing his progress on YouTube, and showed a few weeks back that he’d earned $300 after 2 months…
That’s actually a great result, IMO, and if Mark keeps going I could see that store earning him $1000’s per month eventually
But it goes to show that it’s not simply a matter of uploading a bunch of digital products to Etsy and waiting for the big bucks to roll in.
I’m not sure what DigitalArtscapeFinds did to earn $6,870 in only 2 months.
Maybe they have some marketing tricks up their sleeve, maybe they’re running paid ads, or maybe they just got lucky and Etsy started featuring their products somehow.
Their success shows what’s possible, but don’t assume it’s easy to replicate.

What Happened When He Retired At 32
Val Katayev tweets that he retired at age 32…
After building several successful companies in my 20s, I decided to sell two of them and hand over the CEO role of the remaining company to my co-founder.
I effectively retired to spend time with family.
Val also spent his retirement time…
Driving his sports car around a racetrackGardeningJoining multiple boardsMaking some investmentsPutting on weight (not the good kind)But he soon felt bored and unfulfilled
I liked the free time but didn’t feel excited or motivated in life. Retirement removed my hustle and replaced it with comfort.
So the retirement lasted 3 years. (lol) I founded a company to lead as a full-time CEO once more.
His key takeaway from the experience…
Some of us just need that action to feel alive. It’s a different desire for everyone. Some just want to lay on the beach, others travel for life. For me it’s the everlasting curiosity of trying to build something.
A lot of us fantasize about achieving the entrepreneurial success Val did, being able to retire young and never needing to work again.
But lots of people who do that seem to struggle with retirement and end up back in the game again before too long.
All that to say: if you’re busy building a business right now, try to enjoy it. That could well be the very thing you miss someday.
4 Years Doing Squarespace Projects = $800,000

Published May 11, 2023 by Niall Doherty
In a 9-minute video, David Lex talks about how he earned “over $800K in the last four years doing Squarespace projects”…
Squarespace is a website builder, a bit like Shopify or Wix. So David isn’t some kind of ninja coder or anything. He’s just become really good at creating websites with that particular builder
When David started out, he was trying to land a client for several months with no luck
Then he stepped out of his comfort zone and tried something he didn’t think would work: running an ad.
Within two days, he’d landed a $1750 project
In another video, David says that running that ad wasn’t actually the key thing for him; that may or may not work for your business…
The key thing was embracing discomfort…
If it doesn’t scare you, it probably isn’t pushing you outside your comfort zone.
David started his journey in 2017 – he was about 26 years old at the time – and after breaking the seal he earned $20,000 in 100 days.
By 2019 he was earning $8-12K per month. Then he pushed himself further and had his first $50k month in March of that year
That was the first year I made over $200K with Squarespace design projects, that’s when I was way more comfortable landing $10K projects.
And that had just happened over time. So it was definitely a slow process. It wasn’t an overnight success, but definitely, definitely a process that was worthwhile because every project I did helped me learn what I needed for the next project.
If you’re struggling to find clients for your freelance business, be sure to check out David’s second video above, as he gives some great advice there for getting started

Sold His App for $20K Within 48 Hours of Launching

Published May 11, 2023 by Niall Doherty
Josh Schneider launched an app a couple of weeks back…
Introducing looseleaf.ai!
Had a blast building my first app with @OpenAI & @LangChainAI. Looseleaf lets you chat with any document.
So you can upload a PDF document, for example, and then use a ChatGPT-like interface to chat with it. Useful when you have a big long document and don’t want to read through the whole thing to find something specific.
The cool part: less than 24 hours after launching, and with $0 in revenue, Josh sold the app for $20,000 via the acquire.com marketplace
Damon Chen was the buyer of the app, and it’s now PDF.ai. Looks like it’s still free to use but he will likely introduce paid plans soon.
I’ve featured Damon a couple of times in this newsletter before
Back to Josh, and it looks like he was able to build and launch quickly in large part due to his weapons of choice …
Deciding to use @nextjs +@vercel was a no brainer.
Another developer responded…
Next.js + Vercel tooling is a game-changer for solopreneurs.
Never been this easy to build and ship *complex* stuff fast
If you want to get started building apps like this yourself, here’s a good 25-minute video intro…
Build & Deploy an AI Chatbot with ChatGPT API – REACT! (Next.js, Tailwind, and Vercel)
With some deep practice, you might be able to spin up a quick application like Josh and flip it for $20k in a matter of days

Richard Branson: What is a Business?
RIchard Branson’s answer to the question, what is a business?
A business is simply an idea to make other people’s lives better.
Love that
It doesn’t have to be complicated. If you can figure out a way to make people’s lives better somehow, you can usually make a good living doing it.
More words from Branson about building a business
Every business, like a painting, operates according to its own rules. There are many ways to run a successful company. What works once may never work again. What everyone tells you never to do may just work, once. There are no rules. You don’t learn to walk by following rules. You learn by doing, and by falling over, and it’s because you fall over that you learn to save yourself from falling over.
How Her $1 Billion Startup Found Its First 3 Customers

Published May 8, 2023 by Niall Doherty
Alina Vandenberghe is the co-founder of Chili Piper.
That’s a big enterprise SaaS company that helps sales teams book meetings and close deals.
Alina is from Romania and has been building businesses since high school. She moved to the USA
in her early 20’s and apparently “Steve Jobs helped launch her career.”
I first heard about Alina via a 5-minute feature on YouTube…
How I Launched A Fully Remote International Start-Up From NothingShe says in that video…
we had started from literally nothing… we’re now a global remote company, we’re about to be getting a unicorn status which means that we are close to a $1 billion valuation.
(I googled around and the highest evaluation I found for the company was $625 million in 2021.)
In a recent interview, Alina reveals how she found Chili Piper’s first three customers back in 2016…
At the time, you’d go on Eventbright and see when there were meetups with salespeople. I would go, talk to salespeople, tell them about the thing we’re building and ask them if they were interested to try.
Are there events in your area where you could connect with potential customers or clients?

The Surprising Way A Gay Travel Vlogger Earned $995K

Published May 8, 2023 by Niall Doherty
Ever heard of Damon Dominique?
He was part of the duo who amassed 500+ videos and 1.2 million subscribers on YouTube before calling it quits in 2019.
Their channel description…
We’re Damon and Jo – two 90s kids who got tired of cheesy travel shows and cookie-cutter travel hosts, so we took off around the world and made a travel show for the social media generation: Shut Up and Go. We post videos in English, Portuguese, French, and when we’re feelin’ lucky, Spanish, German, and Italian.
Damon has since been building up his own channel, with 100+ videos and 421K subscribers.
He likely earns a good income from YouTube ads and video sponsors
But a recent article reveals probably his biggest income stream…
The travel YouTuber Damon Dominique’s foreign language courses, for instance, are full of funny and beautifully edited videos in which he teaches students conversational French or Spanish, interspersed with entertaining stories about his escapades hitting on men at European raves.
[…] So far, more than 5,000 people have taken his $199 French course.
That works out to $995,000 in revenue.
Damon launched that French course in a March 2021 video, so it’s earning him about $500k per year …
If he had come to me 3 years ago and said he was going to launch a $199 course to teach people French, I would have told him not to waste his time.
After all, why would anyone pay $199 for a course like that when there are tons of free YouTube videos teaching French, and a bunch of awesome free language learning apps like Duolingo?
Goes to show the power of building an audience
Apparently, if you forge a strong enough connection with people online, they will happily buy what you’re selling even if there are much cheaper options available.

$8000/Month Cheap Houses Japan Newsletter

Published May 8, 2023 by Niall Doherty
A Canadian guy called Michael runs the website CheapHousesJapan.com
and writes…
Since studying in Japan for a year in my university days, my dream has always been to buy a vacation house there.
A few years ago, after many hundreds of hours of research, and multiple trips to Japan to look at houses, I bought my beautiful vacation house — for the grand sum of $31,650. I love visiting my house in Japan, and have spent months at a time there, even getting ‘stuck’ there for 6 months in 2020 (good thing I was working remotely!).
After buying his house in Japan, Michael decided to start a website, newsletter and Instagram to help other foreigners do the same.
He charges $10/month or $90/year for the newsletter, which features 20 new property listings each week.
Michael doesn’t reveal how many paying subscribers he has, but he has 271k followers on Instagram. If only 0.1% of those followers subscribe to his newsletter, he’d be earning about $25k per month
Let’s be conservative though and say it’s more like $8000/month.
Michael also writes on his FAQ page…
I have a day job, so this site is a passion project for me.
He registered his domain in March 2021 and shared his first post on Instagram the same month.
Best I can tell, the Instagram account was repurposed from a personal account Michael had previously. But still, pretty fast growth for such a niche business
Michael’s Instagram strategy is pretty clever. He’ll post an image of a property along with the price, then let people know they’re late to the party with words like these in the description…
This property was featured in the email newsletter 2 weeks ago, issue number 109
Click the link in my bio to sign up!
I reckon there’s plenty of opportunity for this kind of business to be successfully emulated in other countries / areas / niches.
Michael himself could easily expand to Luxury Houses Japan, for example.
Could you do something like this in your area?
What else might it work for besides houses?
