My Current Writing Soundtracks

Music is a majorly important component of my workday. Depending on the music I choose to listen to, my mood and efficiency levels fluctuate. Every year for Christmas I ask for Pandora One because I can listen to it 6+ hours EVERY WORKDAY. Currently, my favorite Pandora One stations for working are:

Carolan’s Dream Radio — This is a Celtic Harp radio that I listen to while working on normal drafting-related endeavors.

Enya Radio — Enya is one of my all-time favorite artists and she is another go...

My Top 10 Favorite Books from Literature Class

First off, Happy Ground Hog Day, everyone! I think I might have to drag out that old Bill Murray movie at some point tonight…Anyway, I digress. What you’re here for today, of course, is my list of my top 10 favorites from my middle school and high school literature classes! It might seem strange to do a post about my school days, but I was a MAJOR reader back then. Though I didn’t love being told what to read and when, I did enjoy many of the books we read. You can see a nifty collage of them...

10 Steps for Successful Rewriting

IMG_2486

Rewriting is hard, but inevitably at some point during your drafting process you will need to do it. I was extremely intimidated by rewriting when I was working on polishing up my first novels. I was always afraid of ruining something and irrevocably destroying key scenes. Still, I knew in my head that it was something that needed to be done. So, with far too many emotions, I dove in and learned through experience my methods for rewriting. Everyone’s approach will be different, but I have fou...

Beloved Beings: Mogget from Sabriel

This is Mogget. He is one of the most complex, exciting, and terrific characters ever invited. He hales from the novelSabrielby Garth Nix. If you’ve never read this book (or its sequelsLiraeland Abhorsen) you are really doing yourself a disservice, because they are amazing. I decided to start my feature “Beloved Beings” with Mogget for several reasons. First, Mogget was the really one of the first characters I ever grew attached to as a young person. I thought he was the best thing since slic...

Wednesday Wanderment

Have I ever mentioned my love for Paul Coelho’s bookThe Alchemist? Well, if not, you should know that I ADORE it. It is such a beautiful book and this is one of the many quotes I have treasured from it. It gives me such courage, hope, and peace. This week has been both excellent and challenging. There are many great projects going on during my workday that are very worthwhile, but they take lots of mental effort. I’m looking forward to a restful date night tonight with the Philosopher. Since...

Working Full-Time From Home and Time Accountability

To-Do-List

When I first started working full-time from home, I had a very rigid, structured workday. As months and months passed, I let myself allow that schedule to become more fluid–partly out of necessity and partly out of a comfortableness that had developed between me and my work. Lately, work has been PILING on. In case you didn’t know, not only am I a novelist and author, but I also work as an administrator and chief editor for an awesome graphic design company calledMaiedae. As Maiedae grows, so...

Why Writers Should Keep “Starter Notebooks”

Starter NotebooksIt can be a bound journal such as the one pictured above. It can be a spiral notebook (my personal favorite). It can even be a three-ring binder with page protectors. Whatever its shape, a writer must have a starter notebook. What do I mean by a starter notebook? I refer to a notebook in which your writerly mind is free to jot, make notes, and write random scribblings. Fill it to the brim with any minutiae that you think of while you’re out and about or while your up late at night. I havemany...
