how is a website like furniture and hair?

sheep_getting_hair_cut_lg_wht_stSo yesterday I said to my dear husband (DH), “I changed the background on my website. Look at it and tell me if you like this one better than the solid color background I was using before.”

He looked and answered (like any wise DH), “Yeah, that looks good.” Of course, if he was truly wise, he would have stopped there. He didn’t. “Does it really matter? You’ll change it again soon anyway.”

Oh, that man!

“Why do you do that all the time?” he asked.

“Because,” I told him, “it’s less strenuous than r...

movie review: captain phillips

captain phillipsI abandoned my manuscript yesterday afternoon and went with my DH to see the movie, Captain Phillips.

This is the true story of Captain Richard Phillips and the 2009 hijacking by Somali pirates of the US-flagged MV Maersk Alabama, the first American cargo ship to be hijacked in two hundred years.

You can tell a movie is engrossing when it is over two hours in length and the passing of time means nothing to the viewer. I was literally on the edge of my seat for much of the last half of the film....

nanowrimo: day 4

I’m participating in National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) this year. If you haven’t heard of it, the basics are everyone signs up to try to write a 50,000 word novel in thirty days. That’s 1667 words a day, minimum.

I have a lot of words to write in order to make my deadline, so I figured NaNoWriMo would give me the kick in the behind that I need to make those word counts high every day. It spurs one on to see what others are doing. Since I take Sundays off, unlike many/most participants,...

bragging rights

61VVzY0Lw-L._SL1000_I can’t help myself. I’m experiencing a proud mama moment and must brag on my youngest daughter Jennifer. One of her photographs has been used on a cover of a book by Dandi Daley Mackall. The novel isPastureland, and it is a fantasy story that sounds absolutely fabulous.

It is Year Twelve of The Horse Wars that have left the earth scorched, depleted of electricity, oil, gas, and bullets. At the start of the war, babies and toddlers were sent underground. Now these teens populate the world. Hor...

christian fiction wednesday 10-30-13

After years of writing novels, I’ve been privileged to meet many authors of Christian fiction, and I love to help readers find their work. Although I usually haven’t read the books I share in my Christian Fiction Wednesday posts (too many books, too little time), I like to feature books to help readers find them. Check out this week’s post and maybe you’ll discover another favorite author.

falling in love all over again

picnic by the riverI spoke at a Boise book club last week. They had readBeloved for last month’s book, and I was hosted to a picnic by the river which was inspired by a scene from the book. Such fun. Especially since they expressed their affection forBeloved and the main characters, Diana and Tyson.

During the discussion, which was about both Belovedand the writing life in general, I mentioned that by the time readers hold a certain book in their hands, I will have written two more books and have probably starte...
