my christmas wishes video
I couldn’t let another day pass without wishing all of my blog and social media friends a Merry Christmas. So I threw together a quick video so I could say it “in person.”

awaiting a new release with heart in throat
The release of my 69th book, A Promise Kept, is getting closer and closer. Copies of the printed book have begun their trek across the country to warehouses and bookstores. I received my first copy of the book via UPS from my editor on Tuesday night. Always a thrill to hold a new book in my hands! The ebook special ($4.99) is winding down along with the winding down of this old year.
I need to be writing a ton of words on my late 2014 release, but marketing/publicity efforts for A Promise Kept...

get a delightful collection of novellas for $1.99

If you haven’t had a chance to read A Bride for All Seasons, now is a great time to grab it for your ebook reading device or program for just $1.99.
Margaret Brownley, Debra Clopton, and Mary Connealy join me in sharing four mail order bride stories that will make you smile and laugh and sigh with delight. We had so much fun coming up with this collection of novellas, and we were especially fond of Melvin Hitchcock whose creative editing is responsible for the predicaments our unsuspecting her...

a christmas eve story
Seventy-five to a hundred years ago, my grandmother used to travel around in Idaho, doing dramatic readings. When I say “readings,” I don’t really mean she read from books. She memorized and performed plays and books. I was only twelve when she died, and I don’t remember seeing her do any of her professional performances. But I do remember that she was an amazing storyteller and could keep me entertained for ages.
The video below made me think of Grandma. It’s a beautiful Christmas Eve story t...

movie review: the book thief
2013 has turned out to be a good year for movies. Jerry and I have taken in quite a few winners: Gravity; Captain Phillips; Hunger Games: Catching Fire, just to name a few.
This afternoon, we went to see The Book Thief. I read the novel this fall, and I am so glad that I read it first.
The Book Thief is a large book (576 pages for the paperback). When a big book becomes a two hour movie, there is a lot that has to be left out. That was definitely true in this case. So many crucial scenes in the...

COZY CHRISTMAS
by Valerie Hanson
For the first time in years, Christmas brings hope to Bygones, Kansas. But for Josh Barton, Main Street’s coffee shop owner, it brings back sad memories he’d rather forget. He’s a new man, with a new life and faith now. Still, he...

life = change
When I was a little girl, Christmas made me giddy with excitement. Christmas Eve through to Christmas morning, I would wake up every hour throughout the night, asking my mom if we could get up yet. Even before that, when I was four, I came out of the bedroom on Christmas morning, saw the tree and presents, and fainted dead away.
Years later, as a mom of young girls, I would wake up at 3:00 or 4:00 in the morning, so excited for what my children would find under the tree. I was impatient, so I...

do you use goodreads?
Yes! That’s my answer to the question in the headline. I definitely use it. It is a great site, if you use it right.
I joined Goodreads in the summer of 2010 (here’s the link to my author profile), but I didn’t really start using it until the spring of this year. It confused me a little bit at first, and I didn’t take the time to figure things out. I’m not even sure I got recognized as a Goodreads Author until this year.
As a writer, I love the ease of running book giveaways. Since March 2013,...
