Cover Matters

Yesterday, the following post was featured on ACFW’s blog, but I wanted to make certain my regular readers got to see it.

It’s a bold new world for writers. No doubt about that. Not all that long ago, there was a traditional path to publishing that the vast majority of novelists followed. The digital age has changed things so much in the last two years, I hardly know where to begin.

It used to be I always discouraged any writer from self-publishing. Now I simply caution them to be careful. Don’...

Remembering My Mom on Her Birthday

Today would have been my mother’s 99th birthday. In the two and a half years since she graduated to heaven, I’ve learned that a daughter never stops missing her mom, no matter how old that daughter becomes.

Here are a few photographs of mom and the family.

family before me

The above picture was taken in Payette, Idaho where my aunt and uncle lived. Mom and dad (Dad standing and holding a camera, Mom at his side) would have been newlyweds because there is no sign of my brother or me. In the photo are my grandpar...

Survivor (Sofa) Fan

101916_d1921bThis Wednesday, it’s the start of another season of Survivor. Season 26, and another Fans versus Favorites theme. And yes, I’ll be watching.

It was my youngest daughter who got me hooked on the show. She was a big fan and wanted to be a contestant. She tried out for Survivor many moons ago. So I started watching, just in case she got picked. She didn’t, but by that time, I was completely sucked in.

There is a Boise contestant among the Fan tribe this year. Her name is Sherri (in the photo, she’...

Testing versus Tempting

fireI got a great reminder this past week.

Tempting and testing are not the same thing. The Bible tells us that God never tempts anyone, but He does test His children. Test means to prove. A test puts us through the Refiner’s fire and burns away those traits that aren’t good for us.

Testing is done by God tostrengthenus and tobuild us upand tohelp us succeed.

Tempting is done by Satan toweakenus and totear us downand tomake us fail.

Great reminders, yes, especially in seasons of testing.

One Step Closer

On Friday evening, I wrapped up the line edits ofBeloved. I really love this story. I really love Tyson and Diana, and I hope readers will love them too. Theirs is a story of forgiveness and redemption. Believe me, there is a lot to be redeemed from and a lot to be forgiven for, mostly on the part of the hero. I’ve never written a “rake” before, but I think Tyson would fall easily into that category.

Anyway, now it is back to work on my new book. I’ve got a long, long way to go and the deadlin...

A Book by Its Cover: Go Ahead and Judge

There is no doubt about it: Book covers matter. The right book cover can make someone in a bookstore or grocery store aisle pick up a book, check out the blurb and perhaps purchase it. The wrong cover can make someone reject it out of hand, whether seen in the store or online.

[image error]Want an example of a book cover gone wrong?

At left is a repackaging of Anne of Green Gables (three books in one). For anyone who has enjoyed Anne of Green Gables (1908), looking at this come-hither 21st Century teenage m...

Flora’s Wish by Kathleen Y’Barbo

[image error]FLORA'S WISH

February 2013

When Pinkerton Lucas McMinn catches up to his former brother-in-law Will Tucker, he plans to slug him first then throw the bigamist in the nearest jail. However, Mississippi heiress Flora Brimm has another idea. She’s either going to marry him, thus banishing her nickname of Fatal Flora forever, or she’s going to give the gossips a good reason to believe she might live up to her name. Either way, Will Tucker is never getting out of Natchez a free man. Can justice be s...

On What Planet Does This Make Sense?

I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of my Downton Abbey Season 3DVDs which I ordered last fall. I was notified that they shipped on Saturday, so I checked this morning on the status. And I had to shake my head at what I found. The DVDs were shipped out of Seattle. But instead of coming directly to Boise (505 miles from Seattle), they went first to Louisville, KY (2,439 miles from Seattle) and then will travel back to Boise (1,875 miles from Louisville) for delivery tomorrow.

Instead of 505 total...
