This is the first...

This is the first section of my essay for “In Advance of Air" — the rest uses sound to talk about my relationship to my mom and her death. I wanted to share it to pique your interest (it’s not all depressing! or maybe it is! life is difficult and writing helps) and serve as a reminder that we’re accepting work until the end of February. More details:
Each submission should be roughly 1,000 words. Artwork can span two pages. This is to save space and keep printing costs bearable.
You are welcome to use this as kind of a workshopping space for new stuff or as a “kick my ass into gear” thing to get something you’ve been working on done.
We generally edit for clarity or space. We might send something back if it’s just not getting along with the other pieces or if we think it could use more time.
We usually print in editions of 50 depending on how many contributors there are.
Submissions are going to be due February 28, as I hope to get this laid out and printed by end of March 2014.
Submissions are generally accepted unless we run out of room or, as I said, we suggest you work on your piece a little more.
You don’t get paid (I know!) but you do get a free copy of the chapbook. And new readers! And maybe some new friends.Read more about the project and submission here.
Note no one piece sets the tone for a chapbook and if you are thinking of writing using humor, that is good. And if you’re thinking of writing not using humor, that is also good. And if you’re serious or if you’re silly everything is all ok. Just write. Just make stuff. Be good. Thanks!
it’ll be good. i’m working on a poem about this for In Advance of Air.

So even though they have the worst record in the Western Conference, c’mon, no DeMarcus on the All-Star team? A poem from Gather Me to cheer us up:
TOURING THE CHURCH OF YOU
you enter the church
it is filled with strangers all lining the pews
a silent choir behind the altar
you begin…
boogie was a big snub. other big snubs include kyle lowry, goran dragic, and the biggest snub of them all: anthony davis. you don’t lead the league in blocks per game and then not make the all star team. c’mon man.

States and Provinces I’ve Visited (make your own)
Legend:
red for states where you’ve not spent much time or seen very much.
amber for states where you’ve at least slept and seen some sights.
blue for states you’ve spent a lot of time in or seen a fair amount of.
green for states you’ve spent a great deal of time in on multiple visits.
jk. this is what it is actually like. i did this because the knicks are killing the cavs right now. and i think i’ve edited a poem to the point that there’s nothing left i can do with it tonight. and i don’t think kyrie irving deserves to be an all star starter, even before this game i felt that way. jr smith seems to be getting back on track though, which is good. the game is more interesting when guys like jr are playing well. i also think it’s a shame that goran dragic and kyle lowry aren’t all star reserves this year. if i were a little kid i would totally use markers to color in all the white states and provinces directly on my screen. i don’t see how that would severely detract from user experience. i mean, no marker will completely obscure what’s happening inside the screen, right? can i do that? what would happen if i took a glass cutter to the screen and made a circle? i don’t know man. what if i wrote a book of poems called juuuust spitballin’ here? would people want to read that? would that be a poetry bestseller on spd? would people review that on the htmlgiant? the htmlgiant keeps getting sadder and sadder. i feel bad for the htmlgiant, but mostly i just feel sad for giants in general and also for html. i feel sad for giants because where are they? they must be extinct because i don’t see them. you’d think i would be able to see a flippin’ giant. i feel sad for html because what even is that. seems like a lotta hullabaloo. how do a buncha numbers and symbols make websites?!?!?! i don’t know! we’ll just hafta leave that one up to the future internet paleontologists. they’ll dig up a computer and bring it in to the lab. they’ll have to wipe off the ancient marker smears shaped like arkansas and manitoba. they’ll have theories about those markings. and deep inside the machine they’ll find secret html’s and they’ll spend their lives recreating them and figuring out what they mean. through this study, they’ll learn many things, such as: the owner of this computer has spent a great deal of time on multiple visits in that hand shaped thing and stuff like that. i don’t know, man. what does any of this even mean?

To celebrate David Stern’s retirement this weekend as commissioner of the NBA, I give you Daniel Bailey’s Someone from Gather Me:
SOMEONE
I want the whoah moment
already in the right now
my lungs lifted into the rafters
of the church of you
I give you another name
I call you “you who has yet to truly find you”
one day you will be born
someone will call you baby
i feel inspired to count to 100 and then stand up

Day 2: Every day this week, we will post a poem from Daniel Bailey’s Gather Me. And every poem that we post will “feature” a line from a song or poem that is not really part of Daniel’s poem. If you can identify which line does not belong in Daniel’s poem, either reblog this post and say…
chance #2 to win a free copy of gather me. also, what if i changed my name to ana and started an indie rock band called indie ana?
