{Bookshelf} Until There Is A Cure Book Review (Giveaway!)

13 in 13 Diabetes Book Reviews

I frequently recommend Think Like a Pancreas by CDE Gary Scheiner for people wanting to learn more about managing their child’s diabetes. It’s my go-to book when I do basal testing or begin looking at my daughter’s insulin:carb ratios. What I like about the book is that the sections stand alone…I find myself re-reading some of the sections over and over.

When I wrote the book Kids First, Diabetes Second, I knew I wanted to include some of Gary’s wisdom. He graciously agreed to write the sideba...

{Diabetes Management} Daylight Savings Time

Spring Forward.

Fall Back.

It’s that time of year to change clocks. Did you also remember to swap out the batteries in your home’s smoke and carbon monoxide detectors?

What about all your D-tech?

Don’t forget to change the time in your blood glucose meters, blood ketone meters, insulin pump, and CGM.

What about the timing of long-acting insulin?

Long-acting insulin should be taken within 30 minutes of the regular time each day. When we were on MDI, we took about a week to transition to the new time...

Don’t Believe the Hype

Gratuitous Public Enemy song that started going through my mind immediately after reading the first post that set this all into motion:

(E-mail and feed subscribers click over for embedded video.)

I don’t even know where to begin or how to formulate my thoughts on this one.

I have donated time and money to organizations that research the artificial pancreas and those who are looking for a cure. I encourage and look forward to advances in treatment including faster working insulins, more accurate...

{D-Mom Tested} Tallygear DexCom G4 Case (Giveaway!)

13 in 13 Diabetes Product Reviews

When Q used both the Medtronic continuous glucose monitor (CGM) and the DexCom 7+ CGM, she needed to have the receiver on her person at all times, with the exception of bedtime. At night we placed it on her nightstand. She carried her CGM receiver at her waist using either a waist pack from Too Sweet Boutique or one by SPIBelt.

But the increased range (up to 50 feet) of the new DexCom G4 means that she doesn’t have to have it on her person at all times. In fact I sometimes carry it, particular...

{CGM} DexCom G4 Platinum Has LONG Range…most of the time.

In the spring of 2012 we had a trial of the Medtronic CGM* and subsequently began using the DexCom 7+ CGM in the summer. In late 2012 we ordered the DexCom G4 Platinum.

DxCom G4 Range

DexCom G4 Range

One of the reasons why we wanted to upgrade to the G4 after only recently starting the 7+ was for the increased range. With the 7+ she needed to keep the receiver on her body or close to it. The G4 boasts a range of up to 50 feet.

We put it to the test this winter when Q played basketball and participated in a musical production...

{Beginning the Insulin Pump} Final Thoughts

As I was looking at old posts I realized that it might be helpful to share our thought process and experience as we decided to go from multiple daily injections (MDI) to an insulin pump. My daughter “Q” was diagnosed at 3 (almost 4) and started using an insulin pump about 18 months later during kindergarten. Join me each day this week as I share posts about beginning the insulin pump.

Well, as they say…

The rest is history.

My daughter says she would never go back to having injections and from a...
