{Diabetes Management} Bedroom Supplies Organization

My daughter’s nightstand was becoming overrun with new and used diabetes supplies. I usually check her blood sugar around 10:00 pm or so, before I go to bed, and of course any time that the DexCom alarms in the night.

I wanted to tidy it up a little and found this Sterilite three-drawer organizer at target for around $6-7.

All the supplies fit in nicely and are now off the surface of her nightstand. I did leave the Phineas and Ferb cup next to it for the “trash.”

Giant…No…MEGA Smarties

Smarties Smarties

There is an urban legend that Smarties*, which we use to treat low blood sugars sometimes, come in a giant size.

Q and I were at Meijer one day (a Midwest chain similar to Walmart). We rarely shop there (or Walmart for that matter). But when we were in the long check out line, Q was perusing the trinkets and candies that they tempt you with while you wait. She noticed giant rolls of Smarties...

My daughter’s preschool teacher had to unexpectedly take a few weeks off. In her instructions to the sub and the other parents who work in the class, she reminded them about my daughter’s snack requirements, etc.

And the teacher said that my...

We all know that there is more and more emphasis put on food at the holidays. Here are a few tips that might help get you through Easter. If you have more ideas, I would love to...

{Diabetes at School} Following Protocols at School

Please remember that I never give medical advice. Ask your endocrinologist or pediatrician for advice about your own child. Make your own informed decisions for your own child.

I hear parent after parent say that they have not implemented a 504 plan for their child with type 1 diabetes at school because they haven’t had any issues yet and the school is cooperative.

I firmly believe that every child with type 1 diabetes needs a 504 plan in place NOW.

Seriously.

Go do it.

Don’t think your school wil...

{Food & Allergies} Chocolate Chip Cookies

After Q began her complete milk elimination Thanksgiving weekend, we were craving something sweet. I hit up a natural foods store to see what they offered and found several types of candy bars and chocolate morsels all made by Enjoy Life.

I made chocolate chip cookies using the classic Nestle Tollhouse recipe substituting Earth Balance for the butter and the Enjoy Life chocolate chips for the Nestle ones. I ended up freezing half the dough, which was much appreciated a few weeks later.

The cook...

(We actually just use Dum-Dums now! They are 5 or 6 carbs and I’ll either bolus or not bolus depending on her blood sugar or CGM. I don’t buy the sugar-free ones anymore because I ended up throwing out most of this giant bag.)
