{Our Story} The Student Becomes the Teacher

Sometimes when it’s time to perform (the seemingly hundred) diabetes tasks each day, I just drag my feet…and I’m not even the one with diabetes!

When her pump beeps at us (beep beep, beep beep) telling us it’s about to expire, sometimes I just say, “Yeah, yeah. I hear ya. I’ll get to you in a while.”

(It alarms at the 72 hour mark, but you actually have 80 hours.)

On this particular busy day I just didn’t have it in me. I think we went an hour past the first beep beep, beep beep. As I got out a...

{It’s My D-Bag, Baby!, D-Mom Tested, Giveaway Three-For-One} Myabetic Redesigned Love Bug Bag

I’m always curious as to how people schlep all their diabetes supplies. I’m starting a series of posts calledIt’s My D-Bag, Baby! where we’ll get a sneak peek into people’s supply bags. We recently retired our Vera Bradley bag. It served us well for quite a long time, but one of the front pocket snaps began to rip. So here’s a peek at our current d-bag…

We received a Love Bug bag from Myabetic sometime ago, but it just wasn’t big enough to hold ALL the d-stuff we schlep everywhere. I was excit...

{Diabetes Management} iDoctor: Isn’t this what we’ve been asking for?!

On January 25, 2013, NBC’s Rock Center aired a segment called “iDoctor: Could a smartphone be the future of medicine?

Of course your mind will go toward diabetes management as you begin watching this video. Haven’t many of us been asking for an easy way for our diabetes management devices to connect to our smart phones? Maybe even connect our children to our smartphones to ease our worries and help give them some freedom by helping them manage it themselves when they are away from us?

Towards...

{Diabetes Art Day} Time to Get Your Crayons and Your Pencils

If you are my age, you totally have the theme song running through your head right now.

Diabetes Art Day is February 4, 2013 this year so it’s time to start thinking about your project. I am excited because this year there is a separate children’s gallery that will have artwork created by children for children. That’s exciting in my opinion because I am all for free expression, but I don’t necessarily want to expose my young child to adult themes, as real as they may be.

Unfortunately the huge...

Taylor Swift, JDRF, and Walgreens…Trust me, I’ll tie it all together.

Taylor Swift JDRF

Not sure what Taylor Swift has to do with diabetes (that is Taylor Swift, right?) but I found it interesting that the local Walgreens was taking bids on this to benefit JDRF. I wonder if this is a company wide thing, or just this store.

If it’s just this store, does someone on the staff have a tie to diabetes? Type 1? A kid with type 1?

What made them choose JDRF over ADA? This store sells “sneakers” for JDRF and also for ADA.

This is the store that I go out of my way to use because of “Dave the...

Our daughter had been diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes just hours before. Rather than being treated locally, we headed for the children’s hospital in the adjacent state. After a long drive, including countless...

Featured D-Blogs of the Week

Here are some of my favorite posts I have read recently:

Bigfoot Child Have Diabetes H5118 (Rhode Island may pass legislation to allow administration of glucagon. I can’t fathom that any school wouldn’t want a child to get quick treatment!)

Teens With Diabetes

The Blue Heel Society The Diabetic Driver (I wanted to include this in my book as a teen driver must, but was vetoed. I think it’s an excellent idea!)

{Diabetes Management} ADA’s Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes—2013

Last week Wil Dubois, contributor to DiabetesMine discussed several highlights from the American Diabetes Association’s (ADA) Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes—2013.

I found much of it to be very interesting and relevant to type 1′s, especially that they suggest that some people may need to test 6-8 times a day. (We test more than that, but that’s a topic for another blog post entirely!) And I’m glad to see more flexible A1c goals.

What really struck me was the discussion about continuous g...

{Diabetes Management} The Artificial Pancreas…or why a hot fudge sundae made me cry.

I know some of you are of the mindset: cure or nothing.

I’m not that way.

I’m not an all or nothing type of person.

Do I want a cure for my daughter’s diabetes?

Of course I do.

But there isn’t even a consensus on what a cure looks like. For me, it would be a true biological cure that wouldn’t require her to take anti-rejection meds or that has side effects that are as bad, if not worse, than dealing with diabetes itself.

I’m very optimistic that there will be an Artificial Pancreas (AP) available f...
