{D-Mom 2.0} 3-Carb Valentine Treat
Traditional Valentine’s treats are usually high in carbs. But here’s a quick dessert you can make for your sweetheart any time of year. And your child’s eyes will light up because she can actually lick the spoon as you are making these!
If you want to get really fancy, decorate the cups with Valentine stickers.
3 Carb Cupid’s Cups

Ingredients
2 3-oz. boxes of sugar-free strawberry Jell-O
1/2 container Cool Whip

{D-Mom 2.0} Heart-Shaped Sugar, Sugar, Sugar
I wrote this post way back when at Valentine’s Day. At the time we were still doing injections and practiced a tight eating schedule. Now that we have an insulin pump, she can indulge a little more at parties. I just do my best guess to carb count and bolus. But big bowls of candy are still off limits.
The preschool had a Valentine Disco Dance earlier this week. This is our third one and I knew the drill. Luckily most parents are opting to bring somewhat healthy snacks like veggies and cheese...

Spare a Rose, Save a Child
This Valentine’s Day, my fellow Diabetes Advocates are asking those touched by diabetes to consider giving one less rose in that bouquet and instead give that money to Life for a Child, which is an International Diabetes Federation program.
“Our idea was to take the typical ‘dozen roses,’ so popular on Valentine’s Day, and save just one rose to spare the life of a child. ‘Spare a Rose, Save a Child’ is simple: buy one less rose this Valentine’s Day and share the value of that flower with a chi...

{In Q’s Words} Diabetes Art Day 2013
Creating her Diabetes Art Day project.
She titled her piece
“Me, With Diabetes”
Did you participate in Diabetes Art Day? There is still time to create and contribute. And of course you can look at the online gallery at any time. I love the Children’s Gallery that founder Lee Ann Thill created this year.

I try to be a pretty positive person. I think you have to be just to get through life without running yourself ragged. Sometimes outlook shapes outcome.
When I recently opened up comments and asked people...

{Our Story} My Mind Went THERE
My kids have always been milk drinkers. So much so that we got delivery of milk in glass bottles on a weekly basis.
This fall they seemed to ease up a little on their milk consumption. Then at Thanksgiving we completely eliminated milk from Q’s diet after skin tests revealed the allergy.
My five-year-old son has declared that water is healthy and no longer wants milk at school lunch (Darned if I didn’t prepay enough to get milk at lunch every day this year!), at snacks, or at bedtime.
This weeke...

{Bookshelf} Emotional Eating With Diabetes
I am a big fan of Ginger Vieira, not only because I consider her a friend, but because of her positive attitude and drive to help others. You can’t help but be motivated by her.
I shared with you Ginger’s first book Your Diabetes Science Experiment, which helped me to realize that there are ways to figure out why blood sugars sometimes behave the way they do. (Though diabetes has a mind of its own sometimes!)
Ginger’s newest book Emotional Eating with Diabetes intrigued me for a couple of reaso...

{Diabetes Management} Eat Your Skittles!
(Narrated in a Marlin Perkins, Wild Kingdom voice…)
CGM alarms low. Blood sugar is 59. Q grabs the Skittle which I purchased on the cheap after Halloween.
She opens the package and starts sorting them into groups. One of each color. Come on, Q, don’t divide them up equally, just eat them.
Oh come on. Now your sorting them into groups by color? Just eat the Skittles, already!
Okay, blood sugar is coming up. I wonder if it would have come up a little more quickly had Q not taken the time to arrange...

{D-Mom 2.0} She CAN Eat Coookies
As my daughter begins selling Girl Scout cookies again this year, it reminded me of this exchange about whether or not people with diabetes can eat Girl Scout cookies…my answer is at the end, but you probably already know what I’ll say!
