Contemporary Women’s Fiction - Maggie Bolitho's Outback Promise

 photo Outback-Promise-Banner.png photo Outback-Promise.png
Title:   Outback PromiseAuthor:  Maggie Bolitho Published:  November 1st, 2015Publisher:   HarperCollins Australia – Impulse ImprintGenre:  Contemporary Women’s FictionRecommended Age:  18+Synopsis:  Tragedy. Betrayal. HopeAfter losing their only child, Roslyn and Grady Balfour’s lives are destroyed, shattering their perfect marriage. When Ros discovers Grady’s infidelity, it sets their love on a destructive downward spiral. Grady hopes that three months together camping will rekindle what was lost so long ago.Attempting to repair their broken marriage, Ros and Grady set out on a journey of self-discovery and redemption deep into the Australian outback. Packing resentment and bitterness along with them on their quest, the couple struggles with what they’ve lost. Forced to battle the challenges of the other travelers along with the dangers of the harsh outback, their only chance for survival lies in facing the secrets of the past. Will Ros and Grady find a way to hold onto each other when everything else has fallen apart?Amazon | Barnes & Noble | GoodReads Excerpt from Outback Promise by Maggie Bolitho
Having agreed to go on a three-month trip into the outback with her husband, protagonist Ros meets her best friend Suzanne for lunch:Suzanne refilled both our glasses. How many bottles of wine had we shared over the years? I eased my glass to my lips and emptied half of it.‘Does it have to be camping?’ […] she set her fork down and cleared her throat. ‘Okay, you can stop the act now – what I really want to know is, when’s the big divorce?’It took every bit of my willpower to bite back the first questions that sprang into my head. How did you find out? What do you know? I speared a small green leaf and chewed slowly, half-smiling at her. My pulse raced as I tried to imagine what she’d heard and how.She drained her glass of chardy while her attention lit on a surfer half her age strutting past on the beach below. When I didn’t answer she continued, ‘You know – the two of you. Sleeping in a tent. Nothing around but dirt, dingos, and drongos. How long’s that going to last?’[…] ‘Not so fast. There is some good in all of this.’‘Like what?’‘Grady and I are planning and doing things together. I can’t remember the last time we shared a project or worked to the same goal.’‘I guess this trip is better than him buying a sports car and taking on a mistress.’ She gestured for the bill with a wiggle of her fingers. ‘Now that’s a laugh. Grady, the most loyal man ever to draw breath, having an affair. There’s one thing you’ll never have to worry about!’I put on my sunglasses and ignored the lies that hung between us. Six years earlier Suzanne knew every detail about me, large and small. She had been at my side when I miscarried my first child and again when Cadel was born. While we rejoiced at the birth of my beautiful baby, she consoled me over the emergency hysterectomy I’d undergone. ‘One healthy baby will bring you unlimited joy. Quality trumps quantity,’ she said and kissed Cadel’s tiny fists. Now I couldn’t even tell her how a stray voice at the Supershow had almost stopped my heart. She didn’t know that far from being the most loyal man on earth, Grady had inflicted fresh pain when the old wounds weren’t fully healed. She also didn’t know how close we’d come to bankruptcy when he had managed our finances. She saw what the outside world was meant to see: two people, affectionate and loyal, the public face of our marriage. I needed a holiday in ways she could never guess. photo Maggie-Bolitho.png About the Author:A free range child, Maggie Bolitho grew up on an island in Canada’s Pacific Northwest. Historical Romance - The Dream Catcher by Marie Laval

THE DREAM CATCHER BY MARIE LAVALDANCING FOR THE DEVIL TRILOGY – Book 1
Genre: Historical Romance (mid nineteenth century)Release Date: 28th Dec 2015Publisher:  Áccent PressCan her love heal his haunted heart? - Cape Wrath, Scotland, November 1847.
Bruce McGunn is a man as brutal and unforgiving as his land. Discharged from the army, he is haunted by the spectres of his fallen comrades and convinced he is going mad. And he is running out of time to save his estate from the machinations of Cameron McRae, heir to the McGunn's ancestral enemies. When the clipper carrying McRae’s new bride is caught in a violent storm and docks at Wrath harbour, Bruce decides to revert to the old ways and hold the clipper and the woman to ransom. However, far from the spoilt heiress he expected, Rose is genuine, funny and vulnerable – a ray of sunshine in the long, harsh winter that has become his life.
Rose is determined to escape Wrath and its proud master – the man she calls McGlum.
Will she be reunited with Cameron McRae, the dazzlingly handsome aristocrat she married after a whirlwind romance in Algiers, or will she risk her heart and her honour to help Bruce discover the truth about his past and solve the brutal murders committed on his land?
THE DREAM CATCHER (BOOK 1) ExcerptA giant stepped in front of her. Dressed in black riding boots, black breeches and riding coat, he was so tall and his shoulders so broad the already dark horizon darkened further.       ‘Silence.’       His voice was deep and calm, the voice of a man used to be obeyed. The crowd hushed at once.       He bent down in front of her.       ‘Well, well, who do we have here?’       Even though she could hardly see his face, she felt his eyes bore into hers, and it was enough to make her mind go blank.       ‘Rose…Rose Saintclair.’       ‘Where are the others, your servants, your maids?’       ‘I… I don’t have any.’       ‘Really? That’s a surprise. All right then, come up.’ He held both his hands out.       She hesitated a moment before placing her hands in his. He pulled her up and she flew straight into his arms, landing with a bump against his broad, hard chest. He was so tall she had to tilt her face all the way back to look at him. Her heart skipped a beat, then started bumping fast and loud.       His eyes were grey and framed by dark eyelashes, his nose straight and strong, his cheekbones high and sharp. Thick black stubble covered his cheeks and chin, and his hair flew around his face, the colour of a raven’s wing. There was something dangerous about him, something reminiscent of a brutal warrior from days long gone by.       She wriggled to free herself but he didn't let go and his mouth curved into a mocking smile.      ‘Well, Fàilte, my sweetheart. ‘I’ll say this for McRae. If there’s one thing the rascal can do, it’s pick his fancy women.’       His hand slid from her waist and he patted her bottom.       Her reaction was instinctive. She swung her arm and lifted her hand to slap him. She didn’t have the chance. Without batting an eyelid he caught her wrist.       ‘Steady on, sweetheart. You have a nasty little temper.’       ‘And you have no right to insult me in this way, you vile brute,’ she hissed. ‘I am not Lord McRae’s fancy woman, as you so elegantly put it, I’m his wife!’       She had expected at least a shocked response or a groveling apology but he merely smiled.       ‘It’s all right, gràidheag, you don’t have to pretend.’       ‘Pretend what?’       ‘Pretend you’re married to the man. I don’t care if you’re McRae’s mistress or his laundry maid, if you scrub his back or his dirty shirts.’       ‘I am telling the truth, you stubborn macaque,’ she shouted in frustration. ‘I married Lord McRae in Algiers four weeks ago.’      ‘Please don't scream quite so loud. I heard you the first time. I just don’t believe you.’       ‘What?’       ‘First you introduce yourself as Rose Saintclair, now you’re spinning me a tale about being married McRae. Make up your mind, sweetie.’       He glanced at her hand. ‘I don’t see any wedding band on your finger.’       ‘That’s because Cameron wanted to keep the wedding a secret. Never mind, I don’t have to explain anything to you. Now let go of me.’       She wriggled to break free, but he was still holding her wrist, leaving her no choice but to kick him hard in the shin with the tip of her boot – the very pointy tip of the fashionable new boots she had made in Algiers.       ‘Ouch. Steady on, sweetheart.’       ‘Let go of me, you deranged baboon! And stop calling me sweetheart.’       She kicked him again, harder. He muttered something in a strange, guttural language she didn’t understand and let go of her so suddenly she staggered backward and fell on her bottom on the hard, wet cobbles.       Her breath caught in her throat, her heart beat hard, erratic. Tears blurred her vision as people sneered and clapped around her. She knew McRaes and McGunns were enemies, but she had nothing to do with their feud, so why did everybody here seem to hate her so much? And why was the big hairy brute intent on humiliating her and not believing a word she said?       He stepped closer and offered his hand.       ‘Come on, now, sweetheart. Let’s start again. I think we got off on the wrong foot.’       He sounded contrite but she wasn’t ready to forgive to forgive him. Ignoring his hand, she scrambled to her feet, and straightened her back. Attack was the best defence, her brother often said, and Lucas knew what he was talking about. He was the best scout in the whole of the Barbary States – or Algeria as the French now called her country.       ‘Take me to your master immediately,’ she started in a voice as cold and steady she could manage, ‘so I can ask him to have you whipped for your insolence.’       There was a collective gasp from the people around them. Not looking in the least impressed, the man crossed his arms on his broad chest and arched his eyebrows.       ‘Really?’       She took another deep breath.       ‘That’s what I do to disrespectful servants on my estate, and I can assure you they stop smirking after five lashes.’ That was an outrageous lie, of course, but no one here was to know.       'If what you said earlier is true, then I see McRae chose his bride well.’ The man’s eyes were now hard as steel. ‘You and he are indeed a match made in heaven, or in hell. I’m sure you’ll be very happy together.’ He paused. ‘I’m sorry to disappoint you, sweetheart, but I don’t approve of whipping people, or beasts, for that matter.’       ‘And I don’t care a fig if you approve or not. It is for your master to decide your punishment, and from what I’ve heard of Lord McGunn, he is neither a patient nor compassionate man.’       He arched his eyebrows. ‘I didn’t know I had such a bad reputation.’       Rose’s heart stopped. He wasn’t… he couldn’t be…       ‘I realise I failed to introduce myself. I am Bruce McGunn.’ He bowed his head in a military salute.       ‘You are?’ The words came out as a squeak.       His lips stretched into a tight smile that didn’t warm his eyes.       ‘At your service, my lady. Now the introductions are over, shall we make our way to the Lodge?’

Do Julie's parents approve of Julie's choice for the school dance? Weekend Writing Warriors #8Sunday

Link back to Weekend Writing Warriors - www.wewriwa.com

Scene set - Last week's snippet- showed Julie's parents immediate dislike of the new boy at school. Today's snippet- Julie's date arrives to take her to the dance.

The doorbell rang at 8:15. Mr. Anderson answered it. "Christopher, how nice to see you. Come in. How are you?""Just fine, sir." Chris was wearing his team jersey, a crisply pressed pair of dress pants and lots of his father's expensive Italian aftershave."How's your Dad? I heard he injured his shoulder last week playing golf."

Blurb – One born into privilege and a charmed life surrounded by love and family. The other born to a life of violence on the streets as the solemn gang leader of the notorious Shoresmen. A young, idealistic co-ed, Julie, meets a jaded, cold gang member, Robert, and cracks his icy shell, allowing the warmth of her love to awaken his soul.
Exclusively at – AMAZON

5 Stars - I loved the cover, as well as the story. I liked the school setting, and the description in the beginning of Julie and her friends. Julie is the dreamer, searching for a happy ending. I also liked Robert, who is a "bad boy" gang leader. "from the wrong side of the tracks," etc. One of Julie's relatives says he has a heart of gold, and he does. He's smart and practical and I think he's great.

Yea, but my lips are warm - That Sexy Moment from Circles Divided #MySexySaturday #MSS138

A sexy moment with Julie and Robert from Circles Divided.

Scene set - Robert is picking Julie up after her dance rehearsal.

"Too good to talk to me, eh?" He grinned. "Maybe I should check to see if your mouth is broken." He slid his hands into her coat, around her waist and under her blouse. As his lips touched hers, Robert placed his icy fingers on her warm bare back. She jumped and squealed. "Your hands are freezing.""Yea, but my lips are warm." He pulled her tighter and kissed her again.Despite the coolness of the November evening, a flash of heat surged through her."Bought you a present. Like I promised." He unzipped his jacket and pulled out a long stemmed rose, tucked it into her coat and did up a few buttons to protect it. "From one heart to another.""Thank you. It's beautiful." She kissed him. "I love you.""I love you, too. Now, let's go, I'm hungry."

Is the love of a girl from wealthy Westland and a street punk from the slums of the Shore strong enough to surpass all that life will throw at them and forge a life together? Is Julie willing to sacrifice her childhood dream of becoming a professional dancer for the man she loves? Is Robert willing to lay down his ties to the gang in order to hold onto his new found love?
Sacrifices must be made, but will they be enough?

Does Hunter remain on the team after his meeting with the coach? #FridaySnippets

A snippet from my NA contemporary hockey romance - A Guy and A Girl

Scene Set - Hunter's second day on the new hockey team.

"Hunter! Come here." Coach Henderson stepped back into his office Hunter looked up from lacing his skates. Second day of practice and I'm in trouble? He shrugged to Zach's inquisitive stare, kicked off his skates and trudged off to the Coach's office."Hunter Taylor. Sit." Coach Henderson rose from his high-backed leather chair, walked around his large oak desk and sat on the corner of it.A trickle of sweat scooted along Hunter's spine."I'm getting older." Coach Henderson rubbed his forehead. "And my daughter likes to point that out, but my memory isn't going. Read your profile, there was no Hunter Taylor on the Timberwolves only a Hunter Connolly. Best damn player in the league. And the stats on this Connolly guy pretty much match you."Hunter fidgeted in his chair."Talk to me.""Yea, I'm Connolly. When I left…home, that was a bad name.""I can understand the Timberwolves thing must have been pretty ugly. But changing your name isn't going to work. When you get on the ice everybody is gonna know who you are. And you are The Hunter. I've watched you play."Hunter blinked and raised his eyebrows."You would've been fifteen. I have a nephew who was playing on the Bobcats. You had an off night, only two goals, four assists."Hunter grinned."Let's see if I have this correct. You went to Europe, got your head back together and now you want to come back and play here."Picking at the arm of the chair, Hunter didn't look at his coach. "To play for a team a coupla thousand miles from home.""Don't screw up."Relieved his secret was still safe, Hunter jumped to his feet. "Yes, sir."

What people are saying about Victoria Adams' A Guy and A Girl
Who can resist a sexy star hockey player with secrets...not many especially the coaches daughter. This story has hot and steamy along with psycho exes and crazy best friends trying to mess things up. Even after battling exes and boyfriends, hospital stays and a long distance relationship he has to overcome the secret of his past so they can move forward. Highly recommend this book.
There were plenty of plot twists and turns, which made the story very exciting. I didn't like the villains, so they were written very well. I loved Chelsea and Hunter and the way their romance built as they overcame each obstacle.

Check your FB messages for the hidden ones - really - do it! #ThursThoughts

So I've been seeing a lot of posts and comments about these messages that FB has hidden. With nothing better to do, I checked mine out.  I usually can't find any of the buttons that the screen shots show - I'm so not a techie.  But I did find filtered messages on my Messages button.
Being the brave sort that I am - I clicked on it.
There several from a woman who was trying to contact me, but couldn't get my email address.  I have an underscore "_" in my email name.  After numerous attempts the lady quit trying. She must think I'm horrid, ignoring all her requests.
Yes - I did send an explanation and an apology.

Back on Dec 5, 2015, I received another "unknown" messages from a gentleman I know on Triberr. He told me my book was being promoted that day and now I find out!!!! The promotion even had 2 wonderful reviews.  I, also, thanked him and explained what had happened.

Lastly, I also found that I have numerous requests from "hot" guys who want to make out with me - excuse me while I go be sick!!!

I guess FB's policy is well meant - but maybe we all should have been told about it.

Just to toot my horn  here are the reviews.

Review by Rebecca:
A Guy and A Girl took me by surprise. When I began reading, it took me a little while to adjust to reading through multiple perspectives. After I read a few chapters I easily adapted.
Knowing what is going on in a scene through several characters gave this story a true YA/New Adult feel.
I enjoyed the plot twists and turns, the suspense, and especially the ending. It is a bit longer of a read than most YA/NA books, but again, it worked for me.
Ms Adams wrote as if she was inside these young characters’ heads, and it made the story come alive.

Review by Sarah Curtis:
I’m not really sure where to start with this book. The story took so many twists and turns. The suspense in the first part of the book was good, and the twist, I didn’t see coming. I expected the story to end when the conflict resolved itself, but I enjoyed that the author chose to continue the development of the relationship between Hunter and Chelsea.
I think a lot of stories are written so that the happily ever after comes right after the conflict, but in this story, the reader is drawn through more than one conflict,
it shows the growth of each character and a progression of a relationship that is more like real life. Think about it, in our real life relationships, most of us don’t go through one crazy experience and then BAM…everything works out. I think that’s what made the story so real to me.
All the challenges faced by Hunter and Chelsea helped to build and strengthen the relationship. The time frame may have been a little short for the amount of things going on, but that didn’t affect my opinion of the story. I was still able to become invested in the story and enjoy it.

From Dancing in Circles - scene set - Robert - the new kid at school- has been challenged to a fight.

The two fighters stood facing each other, daring the other to move. Stephan arrogantly confident. Robert wary the crowd was more opposed to him than curious. Stephan swung. Stephan dropped to his knees, letting out a moan as Robert applied pressure to his elbow joint."Any of your friends charge us, and I break your arm." Robert checked if anyone moved closer. Did I really just ask him to take his pants off? Excerpt from flash fiction - Sunrise #amwriting #flashfiction

The person who was going to post today, couldn't so I'm popping up the next excerpt from my up and coming flash fiction romance- Sunrise.

J'dol is from a different time. He doesn't know where or when he is. He arrives at Sian's place. She tries to help him, but he disappeared. A friend from the police department just told Sian they caught the intruder that was lurking around the area.

Here are the links to the other chapters

Link to Chapter 1 Link to Chapter 2 Link to Chapter 3 Link to Chapter 4 Link to Chapter 5 Link to Chapter 6 Link to Chapter 7
Link to Chapter 8

Chapter 9
Sian's gaze followed the police dispatcher's car as it disappeared up the road. The words echoed in her head, "You’ll be glad to know they caught the intruder who was hanging around the lake."She bolted to her car and raced to the police station. Barging through the main entrance, Sian stopped at the main desk. "I need to see the person they just brought in."The officer behind the desk blinked. "Why?""My…my…cou—" Mind racing, Sian focused her thoughts. She inhaled a big breath. "Let me start over. My friend is supposed to be dropping in to visit. And I'm worried he got lost and went to the wrong cabin and you guys mistook him for an intruder."From what I heard, the man resisted arrest and isn't talking."Sian rubbed the center of her forehead. "That sounds like him. He…well...he… uh…has issues with the law."The officer stood and indicated she follow him. He pointed at a grey, metal door. "Take a look."Pulse pounding in her ears, Sian peered into the room. Her gaze settled on a male with a scruffy, black beard and long, greasy dark hair. Her blood pressure dropped twenty points as she turned and smiled. "Not my friend."The officer nodded. "Good. I'm glad. No harm in asking."Back inside her car, Sian tapped her steering wheel. "So if that's not J'dol, then where is he?" She wove her way through the crowds of people leaving the fireworks display and drove down the long, dark lane. Parking her car near her cottage, she gasped as she spotted a huddled form under her deck. Sian crept close and placed her hand on his shoulder. "There you are."She felt J'dol jump. He faced her. She could see the relief sweep through him when he recognized her. Sian held out her hand. "Here. Let's get you inside. I was so worried."J'dol ignored her offer of assistance and crawled out into the open. He held his sword in one hand and backpack in the other.Sian caught her breath. His green eyes were dull and his face unshaven, but that only made him more ruggedly handsome. Standing so close, Sian noticed her eye level matched his chest. His broad chest. She bit back a smile. "Follow me. And this time, please don't run."She led him into the cabin, turning on the kitchen light and then the lamp in the living room. Her ears caught the low growl in his throat as they passed through the living room. She glanced over her shoulder, catching him glaring at her painting. Confused but curious, she continued upstairs and opened the guest room door."You can sleep here."Puzzlement crossed J'dol's brow. He opened his mouth as if to say something then paused as he swayed. He grasped the doorframe and sighed. Entering the room, he placed his sword and backpack next to the carpet then settled down on it.Stifling a chuckle, Sian pointed to the bed. "You can sleep there. It's okay.""Where will you sleep?" The depth of his voice made her shiver."In my room.""You have two sleeping areas?"Sian nodded. Stepping closer, she reached her hand out and stroked the mark on his cheek. Her finger nails chattered across his unshaven stubble. She paused and frowned. "May I?" She lifted her hand to his forehead. "You're hot. I think you've got a fever. Your cheek is healing nicely. Can you take your shirt off so I can see your arm?"He grabbed the bottom of his shirt and pulled it over his head. Sian's gaze caught his reflection in the mirror. Broad muscles flexed as he moved, but what snagged her attention was the black scorpion tattoo and the large inflamed wound on his back. She pulled the sheets down. "Lay on your belly. I'm going to get the medical kit. The injury on your back is infected."He staggered, but caught himself. "Leg, too" He pointed at a tear midway down his right thigh."Take your pants off and I'll check that, too. Be right back." Sian hurried to her bathroom and opened the closet. As she reached for the medical kit, she snorted. Did I really just ask him to take his pants off? Hot, naked, sexy guy in my guest room. Life is good.Sian stumbled to a stop at the doorway to her guest room. Sprawled, belly down on the bed was a butt-naked J'dol. Her gaze started at his head and roamed to his feet. She didn't notice an ounce of spare flesh. Just rock hard muscles. And his back side…oh my. Wonder if the front side is just as enticing. Settling on the edge of the bed, Sian peered at the wounds on his arm and back. "These are infected and the wood has to come out. It's probably going to hurt. Wish I had something to give you to take away the pain.""Just do it."With a pair of tweezers, she plucked splinters from each wound then cleansed the area with an antiseptic. Sweat rolled down J'dol's forehead and his body tensed, but not a sound escaped his lips. "Now I'm going to look at your leg." She scooted down the bed, trying not to be distracted by his firm, round buttocks. When she'd finished cleaning and taping all his wounds, she sat back. His eyes were closed and his breathing slow. She placed her hand on his forehead. It felt warm although he was shivering. Pulling the sheet over his shoulders, Sian stood to leave."No! No!" Terror filled his voice. "Don't let her die!"She edged closer. "Who? Don't let who die?"
