Spotlight on YA fantasy - Reflection Pond by Kacey Vanderkarr

Genre: Young Adult FantasyRelease Date: Torch Rock April 1, 2014Publisher:  Urban Fey Press

Let me introduce Kacey Vanderkarr and her new book Torch Rock.
Torch Rock is the exciting conclusion to The Reflection Pond Series, which includes Reflection Pond, Poison Tree, and Torch Rock. These YA Fantasy books follow Callie and Rowan as alternating point of view characters. Callie is a seventeen-year-old girl who falls through a pond into Eirensae, a faerie city, only to learn she’s meant to be there all along. Rowan is a nineteen-year-old faerie who has never fit in. Together they grow into strong characters, though their path is littered with more obstacles and setbacks than any one person should endure. The idea for the series started with my fascination with scars. Most people see scars as blemishes, flaws that make a person ugly. I think they’re a beautiful testament to someone’s strength. Not to mention they make for great storytelling. You probably want to know how scars and the series relate…guess you’ll have to read and find out!I’ve been involved in the creation of all three covers. Reflection Pond features Callie falling through the pond into Eirensae.I absolutely adore this cover and seeing her underwater, her feet dangling into this lush green world of faerie. It perfectly embodies her fall. Callie is also on the cover of Poison Tree in profile. She’s grayed out and we see the branches of the poison tree through her. Her arms are crossed, her face down. This represents the hardest, darkest part of the journey. Her stance speaks of defeat. For Torch Rock, the final installment, the cover is meant to show Callie’s growth. She’s no longer hiding, but staring defiantly forward, ready to take on whatever life throws at her. Helping create the covers was possibly as rewarding as writing the books. I love how they represent each part of the story and give us insight into Callie’s character. The covers were created by the lovely Julia Gollbach at Bioblossom Creative.
Have you written other books? Their titles and genres.Stepping Stones – YA Paranormal RomanceAntithesis – YA Sci-fi

Plotter or a pantster?  Why does this work best for you?I do a bit of both. Lately I’ve been using a rough outline to sketch a book before I start. I used to fly by the seat of my pants and love it, but these days I find I rewrite less if I have a partial plan to begin with.

Short question time.Favourite TV show? Game of ThronesMost romantic place you've visited? Key WestIf Hollywood called, which actor should play the hero or heroine in your book? Callie – Annasophia Robb   Rowan – Kit HaringtonThree things you'd want on a deserted island. Laptop, solar charger, and sunscreen. Which would you choose – a knight in shining armour or a roman gladiator? Knight. Gladiators seem so…sweaty.Favourite thing to do on a vacation? Visit the beach. If you could meet one famous person – past or present – who would it be? Why? Nicola Tesla. He seems so strange and interesting. I’d love to write a book about his neurotic genius.
Any last comments – ideas – your blurb or excerpt.
Reflection Pond
Sometimes you find home, sometimes it comes looking for you.

Callie knows a lot more about pain than she does about family. She’s never belonged, at least, not until she falls through a portal into her true home. The beautiful faerie city of Eirensae doesn’t come free. Callie must find her amulet and bind herself to the city, and most importantly, avoid the Fallen fae who seek her life. Seems like a small price to pay for the family she’s always wanted.

Then she meets cynical and gorgeous Rowan, who reads the darkness of her past in her eyes. He becomes Callie’s part-time protector and full-time pain in the ass. He has secrets of his own for Callie to unravel. What they don’t know is that the future of Eirensae lies with them, and the once peaceful city is about to become a battleground for power.  Sometimes you find home, sometimes it comes looking for you.

The road to the City of War is dangerous.

With their home in ruins, Callie and Rowan are Eirensae’s last hope of stealing the cauldron back from Fraeburdh. They must travel into the human world where the Fallen hide. The banished fae wait for Callie, desperate to sacrifice her before she comes of age.

If Callie and Rowan survive the journey, something worse looms in Fraeburdh. Rowan is destined for a dark family legacy too horrifying to accept, and his father is anxious to welcome him home. Once the truth is revealed, will Callie ever look at Rowan the same way?

Trapped between feuding cities lost in a centuries-old war, Callie and Rowan will face their biggest rivals yet, and neither of them will make it out unscathed.

Torch Rock – Book 3

War is coming, and she takes no prisoners. Faced with an impending battle Eirensae cannot win alone, Rowan journeys to Macántacht to seek allegiance from its leader. The City of Honor is beautiful, still untouched by conflict, and full of surprises that bring Callie’s darkest experiences to the surface.

With her friends’ lives at stake, Callie must confront her past, and accept help from a faerie whose face torments her memories. Reconciling the power beneath her skin has never been more painful.

Amid persistent threats from Fraeburdh, an old enemy reemerges with deadly force. Even with Macántacht fighting beside her and Rowan at her back, the odds are insurmountable. Callie’s biggest trial will come not on a blood-soaked battlefield, but in the quiet moments when she must choose.

What does Chelsea confess to being the dumbest thing she's ever done? #FridaySnippets

A snippet from my NA contemporary hockey romance - A Guy and A Girl

Scene Set - Chelsea and Hunter chatting on their first unofficial date.

"Not quite the same thing with me. A dancer is part of what I'm becoming. Quite an evolution's been going on here." Chelsea waved her hands around herself. "I don't know if dancer will be the end point. Oh, that was a pun. Get it? Dancer. Pointe? Never mind."Hunter scratched his head with his pen, and then checked to see which end he'd used. "What's the stupidest thing you've ever done?"She pulled her cellphone from her purse, checked her message then press the vibrate button. "Stupidest thing. Kissed Roger Camps on the lips in seventh grade.""Lucky guy. Which leads into why was that stupid?"Chelsea's heart skipped a beat. "The guy was a pig. It was a dare. You know, the locked-in-a-closet-with-a-guy thing. I figured no big deal and kissed him. He trashed my reputation. I spent most of high school living down the slut label he slapped on me."Hunter's brow darkened. "Must've been rough.""It was." Chelsea shook her head. "It isn't so much what people say to you. It's what they say behind your back. You can see it in their eyes and that hurts. What really pissed me off was nothing happened. He said," She made air-quotes with her fingers. "That we did it. He said it just to protect his manhood. He was too scared to try anything other than a simple kiss on the lips."Hunter cleared his throat and scratched his neck. "Being male here and at one point having been twelve, I can sympathize with the guy.""You know, looking back, I don't think it was so much him that I was mad at. My so-called friends believed him because they wanted to pull me down to their level.""Yea, isn't puberty fun? I like being twenty-two. I'm still young, but I'm not a teenager. I can legally drink. Emphasis on legally. I'm just waiting for the sophisticated mature thing to happen."Chelsea doodled flower people holding hands on her yellow notepad. "Didn't twelve to sixteen just suck? I began believing what my friends were saying about me. I started drinking and smoking and hanging around with...well, not the best of people."

What people are saying about Victoria Adams' A Guy and A Girl
Who can resist a sexy star hockey player with secrets...not many especially the coaches daughter. This story has hot and steamy along with psycho exes and crazy best friends trying to mess things up. Even after battling exes and boyfriends, hospital stays and a long distance relationship he has to overcome the secret of his past so they can move forward. Highly recommend this book.
There were plenty of plot twists and turns, which made the story very exciting. I didn't like the villains, so they were written very well. I loved Chelsea and Hunter and the way their romance built as they overcame each obstacle.

What is Belly dance?Belly dance, also known as Raq Sharqi 'Dance of the Orient', has Middle Eastern roots. The styles and costumes of belly dance vary from place to place within the Middle East and across the world. In the more recent years, several new styles have evolved in the West. Although they have their differences in style and costuming, they continue to share most of the original characteristics that help distinguish belly dance from other dance forms. Isolations, execution of individual or layered movements, shimmies, undulations, and snake arms are among the most recognizable belly dance moves. For the World Belly Dance Day international routines we have chosen to include three different styles within the same choreography: Cabaret, ATS (American Tribal Style) and Tribal Fusion. These new styles have become popular on a worldwide scale.About the Styles of the RoutineCabaret is the westernized version of this Middle Eastern dance art form and it developed from the film industry. It often blends and incorporates moves from different parts of the Middle East into the same dance, i.e. Egyptian and Turkish. This style also has other influences such as jazz and ballet. Costumes are typically very glitzy and decorated with Swarovski crystals, glass beads and shiny sequences.American Tribal Style Belly Dance
Also known as ATS, is a newer style of belly dance created by Carolena Nericcio. American Tribal Style Belly Dance is clearly defined and generally performed in a group, the primary characteristic being that of group improvisation. The style is also characterized by costumes derived from many "folkloric" and various traditional tribal costuming resources. [1]Tribal Fusion
Tribal Fusion is a form of belly dance that began in America in 2000 that stems from ATS. Tribal Fusion was largely popularized by Rachel Brice. [2]This style is performed to non traditional music. Popping and locking are typical moves incorporated into this style.

Why do belly dancers participate? One firm belief between all of us - we need to join our voices in the fight against domestic violence as 1 in 4 women that are or have faced domestic abuse in their lives.

Stay tuned - More about this wonderful event on my May 13th post.

Blue Bonnets by Marie Laval from the Dancing For The Devil Trilogy – Book 2 #historicalromance

Genre: Historical Romance (mid nineteenth century)Release Date: 28th Jan 2016Publisher:  Áccent PressBLUE BONNETS - Book 2Cape Wrath, Scotland, November 1847.
When her ship is caught in a terrifying storm off the far north of Scotland and she catches her first glimpse of Wrath Lodge, Rose believes she has reached the gateway to hell. Her encounter with Wrath's laird Bruce McGunn does nothing to reassure her. A reckless officer discharged from the army, McGunn holds a bitter grudge against her husband's family, the wealthy McRaes, and Rose is soon horrified to find out that he means to hold her to ransom in order to save his estate from financial ruin. Bruce's health is failing fast, and he fears he is descending into madness with terrifying hallucinations tormenting him every night. Soon something else is keeping him awake - a growing attraction for his feisty and exotic captive, and the gruesome discovery of two women's bodies washed ashore near the castle. One of them, Malika, is a childhood friend of Rose's she last saw in Algiers the day before her marriage to McRae. How the women died, who killed them and disposed of their bodies is a mystery Bruce now has to solve.   Determined not to miss the ball where her darling Cameron promised to announce their wedding he has until now kept a secret, Rose manages to escape dark, gloomy Wrath. She takes with her a posy of pine sprigs she believes was given to her by the Dark Lady, Wrath's resident ghost, and confused feelings for Wrath's brutal and tormented master - the man she calls McGlum... Blue Bonnets (BOOK 2) Excerpt‘Why did you lie to me?’             ‘I didn’t.’ She didn’t even look at him but carried on stacking the dirty tumblers up. She then snapped shut the lid of the jam jar and brushed the crumbs off the table top into the palm of her hand. When she threw the crumbs into the fire, the flames hissed and flared.             Like his temper.             He strode towards her, stopping only a couple of paces from her.            ‘You did lie. You heard the McKenzies…The question is why.’             The rush of heat to her cheeks didn’t escape his attention, and neither did the trembling of her hands as she caught the sides of the plaid slipping off her shoulders. So she wasn’t that cool and composed after all. He narrowed his eyes, hardened his voice.             ‘I want answers, and I want them now. Who are you? McRae’s mistress? A whore he picked up in the docks in Algiers?’             She gasped, the plaid dropped down from her shoulders onto the floor but this time she didn’t seem to notice. The fire behind her outlined the contours of her body, the curve of her waist and the swell of her hips. Her blonde hair fell in tight curls and ringlets down to the small of her back, her lips parted, her breasts stretched the thin fabric of the nightdress with every breath she took. She looked as innocent as an angel, as tempting as sin.             He clenched his jaw and stepped closer. Some angel she was. She would damn well explain herself even if he had to pull the truth out of her the hard way.

Was Julie's date with Chris a success? Weekend Writing Warriors #8sunday

Link back to Weekend Writing Warriors - www.wewriwa.com

Scene set -Julie and her date at the first dance of the school year.

An hour later, bored and annoyed at being ignored, Julie pulled Chris aside. His breath reeked of beer. "You've been drinking.""Less dance." He reached for her but stumbled.Derek and Heather stood beside Julie. "This is boring. Let's go get some pizza.""Slure. I drive." Chris fumbled in his pocket.

Blurb – One born into privilege and a charmed life surrounded by love and family. The other born to a life of violence on the streets as the solemn gang leader of the notorious Shoresmen. A young, idealistic co-ed, Julie, meets a jaded, cold gang member, Robert, and cracks his icy shell, allowing the warmth of her love to awaken his soul.
Exclusively at – AMAZON

5 Stars - I loved the cover, as well as the story. I liked the school setting, and the description in the beginning of Julie and her friends. Julie is the dreamer, searching for a happy ending. I also liked Robert, who is a "bad boy" gang leader. "from the wrong side of the tracks," etc. One of Julie's relatives says he has a heart of gold, and he does. Where did Chelsea and Hunter spend their first unofficial date? #FridaySnippets

A snippet from my NA contemporary hockey romance - A Guy and A Girl

Scene set - Chelsea and Hunter's first unofficial date.

Chelsea joined her parents for supper, after working at the mall boutique. She checked her cell phone while listening to her mother talk about the plans for the upcoming Braymer wedding. Amy Henderson was a wedding planner and her conversations were usually filled with hilarious descriptions of hysterical brides with ridiculous requests. Chelsea smiled at her father. "So, how was your day, Daddy? Kick any guys off the team?""Sent four home.""Find any special ones?" Chelsea's mother handed her husband a salad. "How about that one I met in the rink?""He's the special one. His ice name is The Hunter. I should get Dad down here to see him, but I'd like to keep this guy a secret. Once the pro scouts see him, I've lost him." He sipped his wine. "His talent far surpasses the other players. His ice skills are—""Beyond my humble comprehension." Chelsea finished her father's sentence. "Thank you for feeding me, but I must be off. Homework at the library." Chelsea kissed her father on the cheek then turned to her mother. "I suppose I can borrow your car?""Why did we get you an apartment? We should've gotten you a car."Kissing the top of her mother's head, Chelsea chuckled. "Don't need a car. I've got yours. Bye."Once she arrived at the campus, Chelsea climbed the steep steps of the library. When she entered, the aroma of old books and the atmosphere of hushed concentration greeted her, warming her to her very soul. From the sleepy look on Hunter's face, no doubt the atmosphere affected him in a non-academic way. A smile formed on her mouth as a shiver of delight flowed through her. "Hey you." She dropped her pad and pencil on the table opposite him. "Don't you be looking like you're falling asleep.""I think I need some caffeine." He yawned. "Caffeine and sugar.""There's a Coke machine just outside. We could grab one."Rubbing his face and eyes, Hunter stood. "Lead on." He followed Chelsea to the main entrance. "My treat. Coke or Diet Coke?""Diet." She sat on a step."Here. Ching. Ching." They clinked cans. Hunter chugged half his while Chelsea sipped hers."If I gulped it like that I'd have to let out the most unladylike belch you can imagine." She reached down and rubbed her ankle."Well, that was a visual I just didn't need." He sat close to her left, but not close enough.
