Why did Chelsea decide on her life direction? NA Contemporary Hockey Romance - A Guy and A Girl #fridaysnippets
From my NA contemporary hockey romance- A Guy and A Girl.
Scene set: Chelsea and Hunter are in the college Library working on an assignment and are getting to know each other.
Hunter held up a finger, signalling she wait a moment then copied something out of the textbook, flipped it shut and focused on her. "Okay, I'll go first. Why do you dance?""Why do you play hockey?""Hockey's an addiction. An obsession. It's who and what I am.""Not quite the same thing with me. A dancer is part of what I'm becoming. Quite an evolution's been going on here." Chelsea waved her hands around herself. "I don't know if dancer will be the end point. Oh, that was a pun. Get it? Dancer. Pointe? Never mind."Hunter scratched his head with his pen, and then checked to see which end he'd used. "What's the stupidest thing you've ever done?"She pulled her cellphone from her purse, checked her message then press the vibrate button. "Stupidest thing. Kissed Roger Camps on the lips in seventh grade.""Lucky guy. Which leads into why was that stupid?"Chelsea's heart skipped a beat. "The guy was a pig. It was a dare. You know, the locked-in-a-closet-with-a-guy thing. I figured no big deal and kissed him. He trashed my reputation. I spent most of high school living down the slut label he slapped on me."Hunter's brow darkened. "Must've been rough.""It was." Chelsea shook her head. "It isn't so much what people say to you. It's what they say behind your back. You can see it in their eyes and that hurts. What really pissed me off was nothing happened. He said," She made air-quotes with her fingers. "That we did it. He said it just to protect his manhood. He was too scared to try anything other than a simple kiss on the lips."Hunter cleared his throat and scratched his neck. "Being male here and at one point having been twelve, I can sympathize with the guy.""You know, looking back, I don't think it was so much him that I was mad at. My so-called friends believed him because they wanted to pull me down to their level.""Yea, isn't puberty fun? I like being twenty-two. I'm still young, but I'm not a teenager. I can legally drink. Emphasis on legally. I'm just waiting for the sophisticated mature thing to happen."Chelsea doodled flower people holding hands on her yellow notepad. "Didn't twelve to sixteen just suck? I began believing what my friends were saying about me. I started drinking and smoking and hanging around with...well, not the best of people."Hunter leaned back in his chair. "So, how'd you get over it? You don't seem to be the wild party animal type.""At first I gave up trying to clear my name. No matter how good I was, I'd been bad and that was enough for some people. Then I met Kendall. She could care less about my rep. We got along, and I drifted away from my old friends and started hanging with her. She opened up my eyes to a different world. I went artsy."

What people are saying about A Guy and A Girl
Review by Sarah:
I’m not really sure where to start with this book. The story took so many twists and turns. The suspense in the first part of the book was good, and the twist, I didn’t see coming. I expected the story to end when the conflict resolved itself, but I enjoyed that the author chose to continue the development of the relationship between Hunter and Chelsea.
I think a lot of stories are written so that the happily ever after comes right after the conflict, but in this story, the reader is drawn through more than one conflict,
it shows the growth of each character and a progression of a relationship that is more like real life. Think about it, in our real life relationships, most of us don’t go through one crazy experience and then BAM…everything works out. I think that’s what made the story so real to me.
All the challenges faced by Hunter and Chelsea helped to build and strengthen the relationship. The time frame may have been a little short for the amount of things going on, but that didn’t affect my opinion of the story. I was still able to become invested in the story and enjoy it.

What a funny looking word - Thought #mythoughts
On Thursdays I open my blog - to myself. My thoughts. My ramblings. My whatever.
Thought - such a funny looking word
Have you ever thought about how funny the word thought is?
It looks funny.
Actually now funny looks funny.
Words are a weird thing. We used them everyday - either verbally or written. But we rarely stop to think about them. You know - have a thought about them.
Have you every used a word so often in a document that it eventually looks wrong?
Have you ever got stuck on how to spell a simple word. I got stuck on - the. Really, I did. In high school English. Was writing something and t - h - e just did not look write. David S, who sat across the aisle from me, gave me the most befuddled look when I asked him how to spell "the".
In my defence, I'd just come from French class and the word thé means tea in French. So I was second guessing the heck out of myself.
How about you? What word do you think looks funny?

Just released- The Flower Seller by Ellie Holmes #romance
Let me introduce Ellie Holmes and her new book The Flower Seller.
Please tell us everything about your latest book. The genre. Who are the main characters?
The Flower Seller is a commercial women’s fiction novel and tells the story of Jessie Martin who is trying to pick up the pieces of her life following her husband William’s infidelity, William Goode who quickly lives to regret his rash actions and handsome flower seller Owen Phillips who may or may not be the man to make Jessie’s heart whole again.
How long did it take to write? The Flower Seller took 18 months to write and edit.
Was there a period during the writing of the story where you sat and stared at the screen because what your characters just did surprised the heck out of you? Absolutely! That’s always the fun part where the story really takes off.
How did you pick the title? The Flower Seller came to me quite early on as a title. A lot of people assumed that the flower seller in the title would be a woman and I like the fact it plays with people’s perceptions.
Who designed your cover? The wonderfully talented Berni Stevens http://www.bernistevensdesign.com/ did the cover and I love it!
And feel free to add anything else here. The Flower Seller is a book about how we should never retire from the battlefield of life and we should always strive to live life with the handbrake off.
Have you written other books? Their titles and genres.I have but they’re not published yet. The Tregelian Hoard is a romantic cosy mystery and the first in my Cornish Intrigue Series. It will be published in September this year. Then, in June 2017, White Lies, my next commercial women’s fiction novel will be published.
Plotter or a pantster? Why does this work best for you?I start a story knowing the beginning, the ending and what emotional obstacles my main characters will have to overcome – everything else I find out along the way as my characters come alive and start to give up their secrets. I couldn’t work with a heavy framework of notes or plans. I would be too afraid it would deaden the writing.
Short question time.Favourite TV show?A classic would be Moonlighting and I’m currently a big fan of Black Sails – you can’t beat a bit of swashbuckling drama on the high seas.
Most romantic place you've visited?A Cornish beach at sunset.
If Hollywood called, which actor should play the hero or heroine in your book?I think Sandra Bullock would be great as Jessie – the right mix of strength and vulnerability.
Three things you'd want on a deserted island.Food and water, a huge library and Hugh Jackman. That would be me pretty much sorted!
Which would you choose – a knight in shining armour or a roman gladiator?A knight in shining armour every time!
Favourite thing to do on a vacation?Daydream while looking at the sun sparkling on a blue sea.
If you could meet one famous person – past or present – who would it be? Why?Eight times Grand Slam tennis champion Jimmy Connors. He is one of my heroes. I’m a huge tennis fan and I loved his never-say-die attitude on the court. We can all learn a lot from that – whatever it is you are striving to achieve, however much the odds may be stacked against you, you must never give up. Jimmy certainly never did. I was lucky enough to meet him at Wimbledon in 2008 and he was every bit as lovely as I hoped he would be.
Any last comments – ideas – your blurb or excerpt.Blurb from The Flower Seller

EXCERPT It had been her daughter Hannah’s idea to put an advert in the Abbeyleigh Gazette. ‘It’s time to take yourself out of your comfort zone, Mum. Why don’t you get Anne to give you a hand with the ad?’ Sucked into the vortex of her daughter’s enthusiasm, Jessie had agreed before she could talk herself out of it.‘So, what have you got so far?’ Anne had asked over margaritas in Spike’s Bar.‘Newly single brunette, slim, attractive, early forties, non-smoker, good sense of humour, would like to meet man thirties/forties for friendship and maybe more,’ Jessie read aloud.Anne pretended to fall asleep and Jessie slapped her arm.‘Bit dull, sweetie!’ Anne said with a smile. ‘For starters, you should put early thirties. Everyone knocks a few years off. And do you really want to say slim? It’s practically shorthand for flat-chested and you’re not. How about “great figure” instead?’‘That’s a bit conceited, isn’t it?’Anne threw her a look. ‘It’s an advert, Jessie. You’re meant to be selling yourself.’‘Blimey! I’ll just get some fishnets and a red light, shall I?’‘You know what I mean. You should put something in there about being outgoing. That usually leads to some interesting propositions.’‘But I’m not outgoing,’ Jessie said.‘For goodness’ sake, outgoing just means you’re up for a bit of fun. I’m not suggesting for a moment that you put “open-minded”. Now that would lead to some replies that would make your hair stand on end. And obviously your WLTM has to be a man in his late twenties or early thirties.’‘Has to be? This is my advert, remember? Not yours!’Anne smirked. ‘So you’d prefer “Recently dumped flat-chested brunette, early forties, lives life with the handbrake on, would like to meet man forties/fifties for visits to the library”?’‘I’d prefer not to be doing it at all.’Anne squeezed her hand. ‘I know, sweetie. And you can stick another pin in your effigy of William when you get home but right now we need to get you back out there before life passes you by.’

How did Chelsea and Hunter meet? From A Guy and A Girl #fridaysnippets
From my NA contemporary hockey romance- A Guy and A Girl.
Scene set: Hunger is back in North America and signed up for summer hockey. His dream is to make it the professional hockey league. Chelsea is a local girl, thinking about becoming a dancer, but not sure where her focus should be. She and Hunter meet in a summer college course.
To Hunter's relief, he wasn't handed a name tag at registration. Instead, he received his Thorton College student ID card and directions to his first class. He entered from the top left door of the huge amphitheatre lecture hall and sat five rows from the back, having a clear view of the fifteen people as they scattered throughout the lecture hall below him. He dropped his notepad on the seat next to him and looked at the small number of students. Hmph, small college, little class. Not so easy to hide in.One girl, with long reddish-brown hair and seductive green eyes stumbled on a step, did a double take when she noticed him, then sat two rows away. Hunter suspected she was sneaking glances his way. He tried to catch her eye, but she was subtle in her movements. The professor, dressed in bright plaid shorts and a blue dress shirt, walked in to the podium, dropped his briefcase on the table and pulled out papers. "This is Communications 290C. If that is not on your schedule, scat!" No one moved. He removed his glasses, dusted them with a white handkerchief and resettled them on his face. "I'm Professor Campbell. That's C-A-M-P-B-E-L-L, like the soup company. I expect you to be prepared to work. This is a compact course. No time for absences or excuses. Do we understand each other?"Hunter stifled a snort as he watched various heads bob in agreement. Brown noses. The cute girl scratched her forehead while tapping her pencil on the desk."Good. Now let's get out of here. I hate cold impersonal lecture halls. Seminar room 136 is empty. Go grab yourselves a coffee and meet me there in ten minutes."The class shuffled books and papers then wandered out of the room. Hunter stopped in front of a vending machine, pulled a handful of change from his pocket and dropped it into the slot. The girl from class paused at the coffee dispenser next to him. "OJ at this hour of the day? Oh, that rhymed."Hunter chuckled, as his gaze scanned her long lean torso and tanned legs."Don't you need something a little stronger? I know I do." She pressed Coffee. Black."Unfortunately, this isn't early for me. I've been up since six-fifteen." He kept his gaze fixed on her while he removed the cap and chugged half the orange juice."6:15." She shuddered. "Is it even daylight then?" She sipped her steaming coffee."This time of year, yeah.""I hope I never see that hour."Hunter fumbled with his drink, caught it, then laughed before wiping his lip. "I know what you mean. It isn't my decision to be up that early. Do you know where 136 is?""Follow me. I'm Chelsea.""Nice name." He held out his hand. "Hunter." When she offered hers, he gripped it. Her tiny fingers were dwarfed by his, her skin smooth and soft. The top of her head didn't quite reach his shoulder. He had to fight to keep from losing himself in her smile.
Lies, deceits and secrets - not a good way to begin a relationship.
After an ugly past forced Hunter Connolly to escape to Europe, the talented hockey player is back in North America and determined to land a position with a professional team. What people are saying about A Guy and A Girl
Review by Rebecca:
A Guy and A Girl took me by surprise. When I began reading, it took me a little while to adjust to reading through multiple perspectives. After I read a few chapters I easily adapted.
Knowing what is going on in a scene through several characters gave this story a true YA/New Adult feel.
I enjoyed the plot twists and turns, the suspense, and especially the ending. It is a bit longer of a read than most YA/NA books, but again, it worked for me.
Ms Adams wrote as if she was inside these young characters’ heads, and it made the story come alive.

Waiting. And why I'm not a fan of it. My Thoughts #mythoughts
Yesterday on the IWSG post, I talked about not liking having to wait. In truth, I'm a very patient person. But this waiting for response from an agent is annoying as heck.
Waiting is defined as -a pause, interval or delay. Yes and that's what makes it so annoying. It's a pause in the forward motion of my writing life. It's an interval of time where my focus isn't on writing but thinking about whether or not there is an email in my box from a certain person. And definitely a delay. I'm completely unfocused when it comes to put words on computer screen. Heck I'm prepping this an hour before it's going live and I consider that a major success. Usually posts are done days or weeks a head.
Nope - nothing in my email box that relates to this post. Sigh. Back to playing solitaire.

For DS Eleanor Raven It's not so much who, what or when but 'why' that leads this powerful read to its conclusion and Karen Long reminds us that a brutal, vicious and destructive act is not something inherently 'Evil' or derived from Satan but is a rational choice made by a human being. The quirky, offbeat and endearing relationship between Eleanor and her partner Laurence Whitefoot shines a light on this dark compelling world of sexual intrigue and mystery. My imagination was certainly held captive! Robson Green
Most fictional detectives these days have to have a ‘thing’ to set them apart from the others, and Raven’s is one of the most original for a long time. The plot moves in some unexpected directions, and builds to a genuinely exciting climax. The Safe Word is an impressive, confident debut. Convincing characters and some nice twists make for a compelling, satisfying thriller, and I look forward to seeing what’s next for Eleanor Raven. Killing Time
