Sword Dance, Book 3 in the Dancing for the Devil Trilogy, by Marie Laval #newrelease #romance
SWORD DANCE, Book 3 in the DANCING FOR THE DEVIL Trilogy, by Marie Laval
First of all I would like to thank you, Victoria, for welcoming me on your blog once again. Last time was for the publication of BLUE BONNETS, Book 2 in my Scottish Romantic Trilogy DANCING FOR THE DEVIL. This time I have returned to announce the release of SWORD DANCE, the final chapter in the story. SWORD DANCE will be available from March 31st.
So, what happened in Books 1 and 2, THE DREAM CATCHER and BLUE BONNETS and what can we expect in SWORD DANCE?
The story so far...Cape Wrath, Scotland, November 1847.
When her ship is caught in a terrifying storm off the far north of Scotland and she catches her first glimpse of Wrath Lodge, Rose believes she has reached the gateway to hell. Her encounter with Wrath's laird Bruce McGunn does nothing to reassure her. A reckless officer discharged from the army, McGunn holds a bitter grudge against her husband's family, the wealthy McRaes, and Rose is soon horrified to find out that he means to hold her to ransom in order to save his estate from financial ruin.
Bruce's health is failing, and he fears he is descending into madness with terrifying hallucinations tormenting him every night. Soon something else is keeping him awake - a growing attraction for his captive, and the gruesome discovery of two women's bodies near the castle. One of them, Malika, is a childhood friend of Rose's she last saw in Algiers the day before her marriage to McRae. How the women died, who killed them and disposed of their bodies is a mystery Bruce now has to solve.
Rose manages to escape Wrath, taking with her a posy of pine sprigs she believes was given to her by the Dark Lady, Wrath's resident ghost, and her confused feelings for Wrath's tormented master - the man she calls McGlum. However, she is abducted on the way to Cameron's estate and taken to an abandoned cottage where Bruce finds her. A snow blizzard forces them to stay in the cottage where Bruce suffers another bout of his debilitating illness. As Rose tends to him, she realises she has fallen in love with him, and is relieved rather than distraught when she learns that Cameron tricked her into a fake wedding and she isn't Lady McRae after all.
Bruce takes Rose with him to confront Cameron. On the way, they read the military journal kept by Rose's father in which he mentions meeting Niall McRae, Cameron's father, on the battlefield and writing his last will and testament. Could the journal hold vital clues as to Cameron's deception - and the identity of Bruce's father? And will Bruce find out at last who is responsible for the murders on his land?
SWORD DANCE will be released on March 31st.
Here is an excerpt. I hope you will enjoy it.
‘What are you doing? Please stop,’ she breathed, as his lips trailed along the curve of her throat. If only he could... He looked up and the seductive power of her sultry, heavily made-up eyes gleaming in the moonlight hit him like a bolt of lightning. Every fibre of his body reacted to the feel of her soft body against his, the warm fragrance of her skin. She was right, though. What the hell was he doing? Once again he reminded himself that he had no right to feel that way, no right to want her, but damn it, the woman would tempt a saint. And he was no saint. He swallowed a deep, hard breath, released her and made himself step back. ‘All right. We’ll stay here a while and wait until McRae and his remaining guests have gone to bed. Where’s your horse?’ ‘I left it tied to a post behind the hunting lodge.’ ‘What about your bag?’ ‘It’s still strapped to the saddle. By the time I spoke to the girls and the musicians, we had to get ready to come here.’ ‘How did you manage to get into the hunting lodge without being seen by McRae’s men?’ ‘It wasn’t easy. I got stuck as I sneaked in through one of the downstairs windows and ripped my - ’ ‘You got stuck?’ He would have laughed if he weren’t so angry. ‘The musicians had to pull me in. We had to be quick and very quiet, because Cameron’s men were in the kitchen.’ Damn the woman. Didn’t she care about the danger she put herself in? ‘So, after clambering through a window, you had the brilliant idea to disguise yourself as a dancer and throw yourself into the lion’s den.’ She flinched at the harshness of his tone. ‘I thought I could avoid bumping into Cameron.’ ‘You bump into everything and anything you come across, why not McRae?’ he interrupted, taut with temper. ‘He could have recognised you when you were with the others in the music room.’ ‘Then I would have confronted him and exposed him for the liar and the debauched rake he is in front of all his guests!’ The baubles on her necklace tinkled like little bells as she shook her head. ‘Weren’t you afraid of all those men ogling you, lusting after you?’ Me included, he remembered, guilt tightening his chest. ‘Well, I... I didn’t think I would have to dance. My plan was to get into the castle and hide until I could speak to Lady Sophia. Unfortunately, Cameron’s manservant was watching us like a hawk and I had no choice but to go into the music room with the others. The girls promised to create a diversion so that I could sneak out unnoticed.’ ‘A diversion? That’s a mild way of putting it,’ he sneered. ‘The girls’ dancing was... ahem... striking, to say the least. Ask that poor old man who collapsed.’ He drew in a deep breath. ‘Anyway, where did you learn to dance like that?’ She lowered her eyes, snapped a leaf from a nearby bush and tore it into tiny pieces that spiralled to the ground. ‘Malika taught me, in secret. She always said I was good enough to be one of them.’ She was right, her dancing had been entrancing, mesmerising, but he wasn’t going to tell her. ‘I still can’t believe you took such risks tonight, just to talk to McRae’s fiancée. It was stupid and foolhardy.’ And damned brave, too, even though he would never admit it. Gripped by conflicting urges, he towered above her, his fists clenched and his jaw set.

What does Robert's reaction to the fight? Dancing in Circles on Weekend Writing Warriors
Link back to WWWI'll be later getting around to commenting on other blogs I'm on my way to my parents and it's an 8 hr drive.
From Dancing in Circles - NA contemporary romance.
Scene set -Robert is meeting Stephan in a challenge. Just as the fight was about to start - Robert's friends arrived.
His gaze rested on Julie's friend. "This all started 'cause Trish wanted to make Stephan jealous. I didn't start nothin'. Ya ignore me and I'll ignore you, and at term's end, I'm outta here." He turned to his friends. "Beer's on me, guys." Not glancing back, Robert and his fellow gang members walked away.
Blurb – One born into privilege and a charmed life surrounded by love and family. The other born to a life of violence on the streets as the solemn gang leader of the notorious Shoresmen. A young, idealistic co-ed, Julie, meets a jaded, cold gang member, Robert, and cracks his icy shell, allowing the warmth of her love to awaken his soul.

5 Stars -
I loved the cover, as well as the story. I liked the school setting, and the description in the beginning of Julie and her friends. Julie is the dreamer, searching for a happy ending. I also liked Robert, who is a "bad boy" gang leader. "from the wrong side of the tracks," etc. One of Julie's relatives says he has a heart of gold, and he does. He's smart and practical and I think he's great.

From my NA contemporary hockey romance - A Guy and A Girl
Chelsea broke free and with the wild abandon of a young girl she raced to the cabin as if floating on air. Hunter stood beside her on the porch; his shirt plastered to his skin. He reached up and released her hair. She shook her head and let her hair loosely hang around her face.Scooping her up into his arms, Hunter opened the door and carried her up to their bedroom. He placed her on the bed and returned with a towel. Drying herself, Chelsea watched as Hunter lit the dozens of candles placed about the room. He kicked off his shoes and socks then peeled off his shirt. The wet pile lay in a heap next to the chair. He turned. "You are so beautiful."Chelsea didn't reply. His voice was a deep, sexual growl. His eyes darkened and only focused on her. He crossed the room and stood next to her. Helping her stand, he lowered the zipper on her dress. Peeling the top down, he lowered the dress to the floor then tossed it onto his pile of wet clothes. Standing only in her panties Chelsea shivered. Hunter held her close to warm her. Her breasts pressed up against his firm chest. She could feel his breath on her skin. His lips were fiery hot as they made a trail of small kisses up her shoulder, climbing her neck then at last reaching her mouth. "You smell so good. And your skin's so soft."There was an urgent hunger in his kisses. The flesh on his back felt cool and moist to her fingertips. Controlled only by passion Hunter picked her up and lay her on the bed. Lying down beside her, he wrapped around her small body and held her close.Chelsea's heart pounded in her throat. Her breaths were short and shallow.Hunter caressed her from her face to her belly button. "I want you, so much." His voice was hoarse. His eyes were intense with passion. He wrapped his fingers around her hand and brought it to his lips. He kissed each finger and ran his tongue up the inside of her arm. Shivers trembled through Chelsea's body when he brushed kisses across her skin. His fingertips traced a random path along her as he memorized the curves of her body, the softness of her skin and the responses she made to his touch. A gentle stroke along the side of her breast caused her breath to stop short and exhale with a soft sigh. Trailing his fingers down her throat to her belly caused her back to arch up into his hand. The responses only intensified when he repeated his caresses with his tongue. "Do you like it when I kiss you there?"

Kelly Heckart shares an excerpt from the Wolf Queen on Friday Snippets #FridaySnippets #fantasy #romance
Excerpt from The Wolf Queen
Although she had been warned of Lycaon’s band of misfits, seeing them watching her with cold eyes made her skin crawl. “Y-you are a goat man.” She stared in astonishment at the horns, the pointed ears, and goat legs with hooves covered in thick brown hair. Despite being half goat, he was the most handsome man she had ever seen with bright, slanted blue eyes and shoulder-length dark brown hair, some strands knotted into warrior braids. A belted loincloth covered little, revealing a muscular upper body.He raised a bushy eyebrow. “I prefer satyr.”The other odd-looking people laughed. She opened her mouth to speak again, but the circle parted and a man stepped forward. A hood covered his head, so she could only see glimpses of his face—a flash of fang-like teeth, fierce eyes, and lots of dark hair. She shrank back from the man who looked like a mix of human and wolf.“Who in Tartarus are you, and what are you doing in my lands?” His voice sounded like a vicious snarl.Transfixed by his appearance, she wondered what the rest of his face looked like beneath the hooded tunic. Towering over her, his muscles strained against the dark brown woolen tunic and deerskin leggings he wore. Masculine power encircled him like a god’s nimbus, in the proud way he carried himself, and in the way he commanded their attention, for even his companions stepped back and looked at him with reverence, even the giant who barely stood taller than what glared at her now.Alara eyed his large feet covered in laced up leather boots, afraid he might kick her, his anger at her quite apparent by the claw-like hands, partially covered in fingerless leather gloves, fisted at his sides. All she could see were his eyes, framed by heavy, dark, forbidding eyebrows, fixated on her from within the hood. Ice blue and emerald green rings. Fiery golden flecks. Intense and feral. She would never forget them. He held back his anger, but for how long? “I-I came…” His fierce stare made her forget her speech.****

Writers are people too and sometimes they step out of their writing caves #spring #flowers #ThursThoughts
There can only be one topic this week - SPRING!!Spring has sprung. The vicious grip of winter is over. I live in Eastern Ontario in Canada (that's near the Ontario/Quebec border). And although this was a milder winter, it was still tough and long. Last winter was brutal so I'm not complaining about this past one.
Writers don't always write. We have lives - sometimes - and hobbies. I'm a gardener. I love to putter all summer day long in the yard. So I don't get a lot of writing done then. I have flower gardens in the front and a veggie patch in the back. Fresh green peas are the most delicious things in the world. My winter stews are filled with carrots, peas, green and yellow beans that I grew and stored. Yum.
Enjoy a couple of spring photos from my yard.

BOOK SYNOPSIS
Excerpt:I know who you are.Jillian Lang's insides froze as she read the email with its dreaded XX signature. She was tempted to run to the front door of Lang Interiors to make sure she'd locked it after closing time."Of course you know who I am!" She threw her arms up at the computer screen. "Any moron with Internet access can find my company website." And exact street address. Her hands shook as she returned them to the keyboard.More than likely, it was just some junior high prankster. Still, it unnerved her to receive the cryptic email message day after day. Who was sending it and why?She shook her head at the screen. Should she report her stalker to the police? Would they even care? They had bigger fish to fry investigating the daily burglaries and muggings that plagued the city. Probably earn her little more than a good chuckle from them if she complained about someone who simply claimed to know her identity. The emails were creepy and obnoxious but hardly criminal. She punched a few keys and carefully filed the email, hating how powerless she was to do anything about it. Jillian preferred being in control. Climbing her own mountains. Putting out her own fires. Unfortunately, the emails from XX weren’t the only thing testing her patience today. She was in the process of hiring her first employee.Another thread of her precious control tore loose with a nearly audible snap. Depending on others inevitably led to problems, at least in her experience; but she needed the help too badly these days to hold off the inevitable any longer. She kicked her favorite strappy silver heels beneath her desk and shrugged out of her pumpkin-hued blazer. Nearly seven o’clock already. An hour past closing time, despite all the work that had piled up while she'd interviewed candidates. She unfastened her all-business bun and shook out her honey-blonde waves. A mother of a cramp knifed its way across her shoulder blades. She stood and placed her hands on her hips, threw her shoulders back, and stretched, eyes closed."Hello?" the smooth baritone resonated through her system, jolting her back to her uptown storefront office. Her eyes flew open to regard the owner of the voice. A haze of fear clouded her vision. She blinked to clear it. Guess I didn’t lock the front door after all. “Hello. Ah...we’re closed for the day, sir.” She reached for the button under her desk, the one she’d stretched her budget to install a few weeks ago. A button that connected her one-woman office to the security firm her two brothers claimed was the best in St. Louis.“No problem.” The man held up both hands, a gesture of full surrender that made her pause before pushing the button. “If you’re willing to give me an appointment, I’ll be happy to come back at a better time.”He was tall. Certainly was no stranger to the gym, not with the way his shoulders and chest stretched the crisp creases of his shirt or the way his stone-colored slacks hung on his hips. But was he dangerous? She nodded, forcing herself to swallow the golf ball-sized lump of misgiving clogging her throat. “Just give me a moment, and I’ll pull up my calendar.” She gave herself a mental high-five for keeping her voice from trembling and studied him from beneath her lashes while she fumbled with her keyboard. Not a client or subcontractor, yet he seemed to fit the general ambiance of her design studio. A perfect blend of mod and complexity, much like the infinity art print displayed to his left—a single splash of color against the white walls and minimalistic white couch that comprised her tiny waiting area.Dark hair waved its way down to the collar of his navy dress shirt in a style she instantly dubbed as touchable. It was slightly tousled as if he deliberately avoided appearing too slicked up but not tousled enough to dent his air of sophistication. His fair complexion hinted at a life that didn't include a great deal of time outdoors, or he wore plenty of sunscreen when he did.She swallowed again, forcing her thoughts back to her crammed schedule. “How does tomorrow sound? Noon sharp.”“Perfect.” The wrinkles at the corners of his eyes indicated he was accustomed to smiling. It should have put her at ease. Instead, his smile along with his faint Northern accent stirred a fresh swarm of butterflies in her midsection. Scandinavian, perhaps?“Your name, sir?”She might be a little rusty on the dating scene, but interest lighted the man's gray eyes. His gaze travelled across her face, dipped briefly lower, and returned to look her in the eye.“Holland Sparks.”She quickly straightened her shoulders, feeling exposed in her scooped white tank top with its lacy neckline and spaghetti straps. Maybe she shouldn't have been so quick to discard her blazer.“What sort of appointment can we set up for you, Mr. Sparks? Renovation, addition, landscaping?” She pasted on what she hoped was her best professional smile, warm enough to appear welcoming without coming across as desperate. Not the kind of smile that begged a customer to buy something so she could afford her next meal. She hoped that category of smiles was far behind her. For good. His gaze leisurely roved the room and returned to hers, glinting with unspoken questions. She hoped speaking in plurals would give him the impression she possessed another employee or two on the payroll. But he if was up to no good, there was always the emergency call button within reach."Actually, I was sitting in the coffee shop across the street, scanning the local news when I ran across your advertisement."My help-wanted ad? Jillian straightened her spine and clasped her hands in front of her. Though preposterous, his statement was firmly planted in safe territory. He shrugged an apology. "Figured it would take longer to dial your number than to walk over here.""You're, ah...applying to be my office manager?" Her voice rose to a higher pitch than she intended. She cleared her throat. He hadn't simply lost his way to the modeling agency down the street?"Yes." He offered a smile that crinkled the corners of his eyes. It made her think of frivolous things like bathing in sunshine and dancing in the rain—sensations her dazed mind was beginning to vaguely identify as his unique brand of magnetism. Administrative duties aside, holy Batman! With a hunk of burning man-candy like him running her office, women would form a line to sign up for remodeling projects whether they needed them or not. How did Robert explain himself at the fight? From Dancing in Circles on Weekend Writing Warriors #8Sunday
Link back to WWWFrom Dancing in Circles - NA contemporary romance.
Scene set - Robert is meeting a challenge to fight. He's changed the mind of one attacker and defeated a second.
Robert faced the crowd. He stood tall and held eye contact with everyone who met his gaze and said, "I haven't taken my knife into your school, and until now, I ain't never worn my colours in your town. But, if I'm challenged, I will defend myself." He pointed at the onlookers. "Ya all live comfortable lives. Ya don't know how to fight. I do." He pressed his finger onto his chest. "And I will."
Note - the reason colours has a U in it is I'm Canadian. Only commenting because the last time I had a "spelling mistake" some comments were nasty.
