From my NA contemporary romance Dancing in Circles Scene set - Julie goes on a lunch date with Robert on his motorcycle.
When the end of calculus bell rang, Julie and Robert exited without a glance in the others direction. Julie wanted to keep their lunch date secret, and she hoped Robert understood. She chewed her lip as she looked around the parking lot. What was she doing riding off on a motorcycle with a guy from North Shore? What was it about this man that attracted her so? Was that it? She thought of him as a man, not another of the immature boys she went to school with?He stepped beside her and handed her a black helmet. "Here, ya wear it. I only got one. You're gonna have to show me the way." He adjusted her chinstrap then steadied his bike as she climbed on.She gave him directions to the restaurant then paused. Not ever having been on a motorcycle before Julie guessed she had two choices: keep steady by wrapping her arms around him, but that seemed too forward, or fall off which was stupid. With a roar, the bike surged ahead. Julie decided being bold was better than dead. She squeezed his waist and buried her face into his back. Please don't let me die. I want to go back to school this afternoon.Robert glanced at Julie's arms, gripping tightly around his waist. He chuckled. "Don't worry. I won't let anythin' happen to ya."She peeked out twice. Once at a stoplight and the second time as the vibration of the engine ceased. The restaurant's sign was a welcome sight.
Dancing in Circles. One born into privilege and a charmed life surrounded by love and family. The other born to a life of violence on the streets as the solemn gang leader of the notorious Shoresmen. A young, idealistic co-ed, Julie, meets a jaded, cold gang member, Robert, and cracks his icy shell, allowing the warmth of her love to awaken his soul.

5 Stars - Author Victoria Adams does an excellent job at bringing characters to life. I really enjoyed living through Julie's dream of becoming a dancer and her connection with Robert. Yeah, Robert may have gotten himself in the wrong crowd, but he really does portray a compassionate person and in the end he really does grow on you. Can't wait to see the next one in the series!

Susanne Matthews talks about love and brought along her romance All For Love #romance
Good morning and thank you for inviting me to blog with you this morning.Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. (1Corinthians 13:4-8 NIV)These words are read at almost every Christian wedding, regardless of denomination, and I wonder if people actually pay attention to them. Love is dangerous. It can lead to unspeakable pain, especially if it isn’t returned. It doesn’t just happen. It’s hard work to put each of those elements into practice. There can be no love without trust, respect, patience, and understanding—there can be obsession though, and that is as far from love as you can get.Obsession is an unhealthy addiction to someone or something. It can blind someone to the truth and allow them to consider behavior completely at odds with their own personalities. Obsession is often the root cause of stalkers, people willing to kill for the one they claim to love. Obsession can lead to madness.
In All For Love, a romance suspense novel, Greg and Olivia face an unknown vengeful killer determined to destroy Greg and all those he loves. When Greg discovers that his daughter is in a madman’s sights, he realizes what it means to truly love someone. It means doing whatever is in your power to keep them safe and protect them. It means stepping away from the “I want” frame of mind and embracing the “What’s best for” philosophy instead, and it means making choices and decisions you’d never thought you’d make, including marrying a stranger. In Olivia’s case, she was betrayed by people she loved, people she believed loved her, and that betrayal forced her to behave in a dangerous manner, one she feels may have led to the deaths of others, leaving her incapable of doing something she adored. Employed as a bodyguard, she has to do what’s best for the client, and in this case, it means agreeing to marry a man she doesn’t like, let alone love. Forced to confront her fears, she puts her sense of honor and fair play ahead of her own needs to protect the life of a young girl and her father. When she does, something good happens for all of them.Book Blurb for All For Love:
To overcome your fear, you must first face it.
Someone is out to destroy Greg Robertson and everyone he has ever loved. After an accident leaves his teenage daughter depressed and distraught, Greg will do anything to make her happy again, including hiring a bodyguard to protect her.
Olivia Cummings lost both her fiancé and her cousin in a deadly avalanche. She has vowed never to set foot on a ski hill again. But now, working as a bodyguard with Marshall Security, Olivia must face her greatest fears to save Greg and his daughter.
Something about Olivia’s determination strikes a chord in Greg, but will she be the salvation he needs, or will he be her destruction?
Excerpt from All For Love:“You! Of all the lowdown, dirty tricks. You were spying on me!”“I beg to differ. The door was open, and I heard Tim tell you I was making calls. I meant to make my presence known sooner, but watching you in action was marvelous.”Jack cleared his throat. “You’re not helping yourself here, Greg, please.”“Aye, but she’s magnificent, and you can’t deny it. Boadicea returned from the annals of history. I’d have loved to have seen the Roman legions invading Britain come up against one such as you. You’ve given me my next heroine, Olivia. Ta.”“You’re not welcome,” she spat with what venom she could muster, torn between preening at the compliment of being compared to the famous Celtic warrior queen, and annoyance.Another thought crossed her mind and her hands fisted once more. She felt like a fool, and her temper simmered near the boiling point. “Did you know who I was in the elevator?”Jack glanced questioningly at Greg.“No, I didn’t. I found out who you were a short while ago. I had no idea the infamous Livy was the famous Olivia Cummings. The photographs don’t do you justice. ”“I’ll bet you say that to all the women you gawk at.”She bit her lower lip and turned to Jack, curious to know what made Livy infamous, but determined not to ask. She put her hands on her hips, defiance in every inch of her stance.“It won’t work, Jack. Unless he’s going to pretend to be mute, people will recognize his voice. I did.”“I didn’t realize you were a fan. I’ll see to it you get an autographed collection when this is over.” Not one trace of the Scottish accent there seconds ago sounded in his voice. “I’m looking forward to learning everything there is to know about you, darling.”There was no way he was going to get the upper hand on her.She smiled sweetly and lifted her hand to touch his lips. She ignored the jolt of electricity coursing through her veins.“So am I, sweetheart. Here’s your first little tidbit of information—I sleep with a gun under my pillow.”Both Jack and Greg burst out laughing.Olivia glared at them and wanted to stomp her foot in frustration.I need to get out of here before I do or say something I’ll regret.“You know, Red, this may not be so bad after all. I think we’ll get along fine.” He reached for a small red velvet box on Jack’s desk. “I believe you’ll need this little bauble. Veronica designed it for us. Let’s make sure it fits, shall we?”He reached for her left hand and the sparks she’d noticed earlier travelled up her arm. Her breath caught in her throat. He slipped the band on her finger, and stared at it. “Well, it seems to fit fine.”Had she imagined a catch in his voice? Olivia looked down at the delicate tricolor gold band. It suited her small finger perfectly, the elegant design seeming to belong there. Tears threatened.“It’s beautiful. Probably one of her best pieces.”A ring like this should mean something. She squared her shoulders and turned to Jack. “What else do I need to know about this assignment?”

Why did Robert say Julie was his jinx? From Circles Divided on this week's Book Hooks. #MFRWAuthor #MFRWhooks
Scene set - Julie and Robert were dancing and she spun and accidently hit him in the nose.
He put the back of his hand against his nose then checked it and said, "Shit, it's bleeding." He pulled off his shirt and wiped his nose. More blood flowed down his lip. "Nothing personal and I do love you, but you've been the biggest jinx to me."Julie blinked and said, "Pardon?""Since I've met you I've been punched in the face, hit over the head with a beer bottle, kicked in the ribs, beaten up and stabbed." He sniffed and checked his nose again then said, "The only thing left is shot and I’d like to skip that one. Thank you very much."
Is the love of a girl from wealthy Westland and a street punk from the slums of the Shore strong enough to surpass all that life will throw at them and forge a life together? Is Julie willing to sacrifice her childhood dream of becoming a professional dancer for the man she loves? Is Robert willing to lay down his ties to the gang in order to hold onto his new found love?
Sacrifices must be made, but will they be enough?

What happens when an author can't post? You wing it. #amwriting
I was supposed to have an author do a book spotlight today, but life gets crazy and I understand, so instead I'm popping in an episode of the rewrite of my flash fiction - Sunrise and get it ready for publication under the Romantic Flashes series. Sunrise will probably be a 2 book series – novella in length.
What is a flash fiction? I belonged to a group that posted weekly prompts that were to inspire us. I added the personal challenge of using as many as I could in my weekly chapters. Some weren't suitable as this is a sweet romance story and some of the pictures or written prompts were on the "hot" side.
The chapter length was limited to 500 to 1,000 words, so I am keeping that same format.

Scene set - Sian lives in cottage country. She was meditating on her dock when a vicious crack of thunder startled her. She stood, turned and found a man lying on her dock. Startled, she stepped back and fell into the lake. When she climbed out of the water he was gone.
J'dol is a warrior out on routine patrol. He is given leave and hurries to his sister's home. The only family he has. As he nears the village, it is being attacked by the Miz-happen. A storm rages as a bomb explodes near him.
He wakes up on a dock in a place he does not understand.
Chapter 8
The uniformed man yelled, "You. Stop."J'dol dropped his food, grabbed his sword and back pack and bolted deeper into the forest. Behind him, he could hear the crash of bodies through the underbrush. After the initial jolt of adrenaline, the pain in his back and leg demanded attention. He stopped and leaned against a tree, chest heaving as he inhaled deep breaths, and listened. Bird calls rang clear, but no sounds of any pursuers. Deciding to rest a moment, as darkness settled in; he slipped to the leaf-covered ground. His head spun from the exertion and lack of food. His body ached from the injuries. J'dol peered through the trees. The beauty of the sunset filled him with a moment of calmness. The brilliant pinks and purples reminded him of sunsets back home. Wherever home was. He pushed himself up to stand and trudged forward to a break in the trees. When he passed through to a large opening, he paused. Before him lay a large flat, black area with white lines. Between the lines were big carts, like the one the uniformed men rode in when they went to Sian's. Beyond that, were strange buildings, built with small rectangular stones. On the front were large pictures and funny shapes that lit up and darkened. Was this where the Miz-hapen lived? Had he found their home? He tightened his grip on the hilt of his sword, prepared to kill every Miz-hapen. A bright red cart drove up and stopped between the white lines. Doors opened and a man, woman, and two young girls stepped out. The girls giggled and laughed. The man opened a lid on the back of the cart and pulled out a long blue thing, he swung it over his shoulder then got a green one and a smaller yellow and pink one. The girls held their mother's hand and walked across the flat black area that looked smooth like a road and disappeared down a slope.Curiosity roused, J'dol worked his way behind buildings and across the road. He stopped near a tree and peered down a small slope. Before him was a mass of people, sitting in chairs, or walking around, greeting people. They were scattered along the shore of a large lake. None were the Miz-hapen. J'dol relaxed. His protective instinct nudged him. He glanced around. If the uniformed men were still searching for him, he was too exposed. He made his way back to the protection of the forest and nestled down behind a large oak.The air was warm. The sky dark. It was time to catch some sleep. Tucking his sword under his right leg and his back pack near his left hip, J'dol leaned back against the tree and closed his eyes. The heaviness of sleep soon overtook him.His dreams were full of confused images of Odine and the children, burned bodies, Sian's face, the picture of the Miz-hapen. Explosions. And another. He frowned and stirred. Another series of loud bangs. He grabbed his things and leapt up, ready for battle. The sky lit with bright golds, purples and reds. The sounds bounced off the nearby buildings. Were the people being attacked?J'dol stumbled forward, trying to waken his stiff legs. He broke free of the forest and crossed to the slope by the lake. More brilliant explosions filled the night sky. People cheered. J'dol stopped, stunned. The people were not in danger. This was a celebration. A brilliant red then gold star burst in the sky then rained down like a hundred falling stars. More shouts and cheers from the people. What were they celebrating? Anger boiled in him. The destruction of his village? How could they be so cruel to celebrate the death of innocent women and children? These people were evil. This place was evil.A wave of nausea filled him. The view before him spun. He dropped to one knee.I cannot get my fill of revenge if I am sick. I must get better. I must eat. Then I can kill them all. Sian's face filled his mind. Yes, he would have to trust her. She tried to heal him. Maybe she would do it again. The air filled with explosions and sirens. J'dol twisted left and right. Had they found him? He raced across the road. A large cart squealed to a halt and a loud blast erupted from it.Ignoring it, he drove his legs, forcing them to move to the safety of the forest and then to Sian's. His eyes adjusted to the darkness, but he slowed his pace once inside the trees. Still he bounced off several and tripped over exposed roots. One thought urged him onward. Sian will help.At last, he broke out of the forest and found Sian's home. It was dark, no lights shone from any window. He raced onto the deck and peered in the windows. He tried the door. She was not home. He climbed under her deck and settled down to sleep. In the morning he would seek her help. Again sleep flooded his body. This time his dreams were vengeful. His wrath being spent on those who killed his family. A noise startled him awake. He waited, listening. Senses alert.A hand grabbed his shoulder. "There you are."

Historical Romance from D.M. Carr - Broken Faces
BROKEN FACES
BY D.M. CARR
Genre: Historical RomanceRelease Date: 15 December 2015Publisher: Green Shutter BooksFreddie Chevalier, a wealthy farmer’s son, suffers a life-changing disfigurement in the Great War. He’s in love with his best friend’s fiancé and is determined not to miss out on the excitement of the Great War. Soon his life changes from one of idyllic days spent with his friends, Charles, Meredith and Lexi, staying at the Baldwyn’s ancestral home in Shropshire and working on his father’s farm in Jersey, to one of horror, pain and betrayal. It doesn’t take long for Freddie to discover that the life he enjoyed before the war has vanished and that he is going to have to find a way to live with the consequences of the choices he and Charles have made.
Broken Faces beat 7000 other entrants to be a runner-up in the Good Housekeeping Magazine Novel Writing Competition (2012) they described DM Carr as as ‘one to watch’, They also added, ‘In Deborah Carr’s Downton-esque tale, Broken Faces, a soldier suffers a life-changing injury in the Great War’. The book also received a special commendation in that year’s Harry Bowling Prize. EXCERPTPrologue1918As the weight of the plaster of Paris slowly increased on his face, he tried to steady his breathing and not give in to claustrophobia. It would be worth it in the end. He concentrated on the gentle American accent of the woman clasping his hand. She had a kind face. Her lack of shock when he’d been unmasked was admirable. Or was it simply she had grown used to seeing men such as he? They told him she was a sculptor. Someone overheard her say she saw beauty in the men she helped and that those men with missing noses and shattered faces were like the sculptures she created. All he could think about, apart from the suffocating pressure on his nose and mouth, was a poem he’d heard someone recounting back at Les Invalides. Was it by Yeats? He wasn’t sure. He recalled it was about Easter in 1916, but not referring to the Front, even so the words still resonated. How did it go? He couldn’t quite remember. He was now one of the gueules cassées. One of the broken faces and his life would never be the same again.

5 Stars -
I loved the cover, as well as the story. I liked the school setting, and the description in the beginning of Julie and her friends. Julie is the dreamer, searching for a happy ending. I also liked Robert, who is a "bad boy" gang leader. "from the wrong side of the tracks," etc. One of Julie's relatives says he has a heart of gold, and he does. He's smart and practical and I think he's great.

Now my advice to you is to make sure you get your claws into that man."Chelsea choked on her lemonade."My oldest granddaughter will be arriving soon and when she lays her eyes on that perfect specimen of masculinity...""I was thinking of getting him tattooed. Sian looked at her friend and waited for her response. “He’s a time traveller.”Kiry’s response was a blink and an opened mouth fish impression. “You’re…actually…trying to tell me…he’s— Okay, wait. First, that’s not possible. Second, you’re an intelligent woman, so I can't believe you think this might actually happen. And third, and this is the most important of all – it isn’t friggin’ possible. There's no such thing!” She glanced around the restaurant. “I need a beer. Let’s go to my place where we can talk.”After paying the bill, Sian followed Kiry to her apartment, a block from the restaurant.Kiry unlocked her door and moved aside. "I should warn you. I have an attack kitten."Sian stepped into the apartment and looked around. A small, tan, fluff ball hurdled out from under the couch. She raced around Sian's feet. "Ooh, she's adorable. When did you get her?""Hmm. You aren't trembling in fear. Guess she's not as intimidating as I thought. Last week. Her name is Haiku. Do you want a beer?" Kiry entered her kitchen."Please."With her beer in one hand and Sian's in the other, Kiry settled on the couch beside Sian, placing the glasses on the coffee table.Scratching behind the kitten's ears, Sian chuckled. "Why Haiku?""I was standing in front of the shelter, looking in the window at the kittens. This one stood up against the glass and a poem popped into my head.Kittens are life joyTheir purring warms a sad heartPeace lives within them.""Ooh, that is so sweet. Just like you, Haiku. Ha, that rhymed." Sian spotted a small, red ball of wool under the coffee table. She grabbed it and wiggled it in front of the kitten. Haiku's pupils' dilated. Sian tossed the ball onto the floor. The kitten bounded after it.Kiry swallowed a mouthful of beer. "So we've talked about my kitten, time to get down to business. This guy—""J'dol.""J'dol. I like that. Go over again how you met.""He landed on my dock. He fell from…somewhere and went thump on my dock. Scared the you-know-what out of me." She picked up her beer and took a sip.Kiry reached down, grabbed the ball of wool and tossed it cross the room into the kitchen. The kitten scurried into the kitchen onto the tiles and skidded into the side of the fridge. "What were you doing when this happened?""I was meditating. Like you suggested to get over…you know.""Still won't say it? Acceptance is part of the healing process." Kiry patted her friend's arm.Sian raised a hand. "Let's stay on topic. I'm on the dock. Eyes closed, deep in meditation and there is this kaboom. Like ten pieces of thunder mixed into one. I jumped. Turned. There he was on the dock. I stepped back." She rubbed her forehead. "Why, I don't know. But being on the edge of the dock there is nowhere to step back to. When I climbed back on, he was gone."Swallowing another mouthful of beer, Kiry smiled. "So using knowledge gained from Star Trek, you think it might have been a temporal rift?""Really should start watching those movies."Waggling her eyebrows, Kiry laughed. "The new Spock, Zachary Quinto, such a cutie. I'd join Starfleet to serve under him." She snickered. "If you get my meaning."Sian rolled her eyes. "Kiry. Kiry. Kiry."She swallowed the last of her beer. "So what happened next?"Sian explained about J'dol sneaking up behind and grabbing her then their wrestling, her attempting to help his injuries and his sudden departure. "But it's his clothes. He's wearing a sort of poufy shirt, with a long, dark, tunic vest…thing." She shrugged. "I think that's what you'd call it. Brown pants and black, knee high boots. All he needed was a sword and he'd be ye olde English person.""You know, we're both taking this rather well.""On the outside only." Sian laughed. "I'd like to jump up and down and scream or something. I know it's not possible, but he's real. I've touched him. And have I mentioned, he is Hollywood A list handsome? Lots of muscles. And drop dead gorgeous green eyes."Sian glanced at her watch. "Shoot. It's late. You've got an early class. I'm out of here. Thanks for letting me chat. I needed to tell someone."With a quick kiss on Kiry's cheek and a tummy tickle to Haiku, Sian exited the apartment and started up the sidewalk to where her car was parked. The beauty of the early July sunset snatched Sian's breath. The intensity of the colours, pink and purple, seemed make believe. As if an artist was trying to glorify the setting. A ping of regret nagged at Sian. It would have been a perfect evening to have sat on the edge of the dock and meditated. Mind you, Sian snorted. That's what got me into this mess.“Sian! Hey, Sian.”She looked up to see Carly, the dispatcher from the police station poking her head out her car window.“You’ll be glad to know they caught the intruder who was hanging around the lake. Gotta go. See ya.” She drove away.Sian’s heart skipped a beat as chill shot through her. “Shit. J’dol.”

A episode of Sunrise on this week's Friday Snippets #amwriting #flashfiction #FridaySnippets
I've decided to start the rewrite of my flash fiction - Sunrise and get it ready for publication under the Romantic Flashes series.
