Excerpt from City of Angels and Discontent by Sean Overman:
June 7th, 1991, Hollister, CA. It was a sad day when Colin's father died. Colin had no idea what occurred. He didn't even hear his mom scream, cry or moan. If he did, it was blocked out of his memory. The traumatic event was covered up like a well-gauzed gunshot wound. Colin's mother went off and followed the ambulance to the hospital, but he didn't see her leave. Instead, Colin was left there with his two sisters, watching Peter Pan in the living room with the big tube. They must've watched it four times before she came back home. When his mom returned, Colin was still sitting in his father's lazy boy, reclined, covered in his lion and cheetah comforter, wearing nothing but undies. He had no idea what happened and Mom didn't say one thing to him or his sisters.
The following week was the funeral. On the main street of their little town of 25,000 people, Colin and his mom entered the funeral home. The stone columns on the outside and big black marble sign indicated they arrived. This was the last place Colin saw his father in the flesh. Colin stared at the body and didn't cry. He was fascinated with the soulless doll of his father.
Father. His dad hated when little Colin called him that.
"There is only one father," Colin’s dad had said to Colin the previous year. "Don't you dare call me that. Call me Dad."

Why did Julie defend Robert? on this week's Book Hooks #MFRWhooks #MFRWAuthor
From my NA contemporary romance- Dancing in Circles
Julie stands up to defend Robert.
Julie held up her hand to stop her father. "Robert rescued me from Chris' attack, and took an unjustified beating in the process." She inhaled a deep breath to steel her nerves. "I owe him a lot, and I'm going to pay him back with my friendship. You brought me up to make decisions for myself and if need be, pay the consequences of those decisions. Well I became friends with one of your most respected friends' son, and he almost raped me. So now I'll be friends with someone I want to be with." Oh my God, I just talked back to Dad.
Blurb – One born into privilege and a charmed life surrounded by love and family. The other born to a life of violence on the streets as the solemn gang leader of the notorious Shoresmen. A young, idealistic co-ed, Julie, meets a jaded, cold gang member, Robert, and cracks his icy shell, allowing the warmth of her love to awaken his soul.

5 Stars -
I loved the cover, as well as the story. I liked the school setting, and the description in the beginning of Julie and her friends. Julie is the dreamer, searching for a happy ending. I also liked Robert, who is a "bad boy" gang leader. "from the wrong side of the tracks," etc. One of Julie's relatives says he has a heart of gold, and he does. He's smart and practical and I think he's great.

Lies, deceits and secrets - not a good way to begin a relationship #MySexySaturday #MSS131
Welcome to the 131stweek of My Sexy Saturday.
This week’s theme: Our Night of Sexy
This week’s theme is Our Night of Sexy and this is all about those special nights that only lovers can do. It can be a special date, that unplanned getaway or any number of things a couple will do to keep their relationship alive.
From my NA contemporary hockey romance A Guy and A Girl –This is the start of the special night for Mackenzie and Hunter.
"Race you home!" Chelsea yelled from her head start."Hey! You know it's pouring rain out, right?" Hunter asked as he matched her pace. The cool rain splashed against her face and body, drenching her clothing and skin, but Chelsea didn't mind. She'd never felt more alive, more aware of herself than she did at that moment. The forest smelled fresh and wet as she inhaled. The path was wet, but not too slippery. She stopped and removed her shoes."One of us is crazy." Hunter grabbed her and pressed his lips on hers. Rain streamed down their faces and rolled off their hair, but they were unaware of it. They could only focus on the kiss. That simple pressing of two people's lips lit a fire deep inside both their souls. A fire that would demand passionate and all-consuming attention to satisfy it.Chelsea broke free and with the wild abandon of a young girl she raced to the cabin as if floating on air. Hunter stood beside her on the porch; his shirt plastered to his skin. He reached up and released her hair. She shook her head and let her hair loosely hang around her face.Scooping her up into his arms, Hunter opened the door and carried her up to their bedroom. He placed her on the bed and returned with a towel. Drying herself, Chelsea watched as Hunter lit the dozens of candles placed about the room. He kicked off his shoes and socks then peeled off his shirt. The wet pile lay in a heap next to the chair. He turned. "You are so beautiful."Chelsea didn't reply. His voice was a deep, sexual growl. His eyes darkened and only focused on her. He crossed the room and stood next to her. Helping her stand, he lowered the zipper on her dress. Peeling the top down, he lowered the dress to the floor then tossed it onto his pile of wet clothes. Standing only in her panties Chelsea shivered. Hunter held her close to warm her. Her breasts pressed up against his firm chest.

Even after battling exes and boyfriends, hospital stays and a long distance relationship he has to overcome the secret of his past so they can move forward. Highly recommend this book.

Spotlight on romantic suspense - Illusions of Death by Lauren Linwood
Illusions of Death
My latest romantic suspense, Illusions of Death, features the Rainbow Serial Killer. To cut the tension that the murders bring, I tried to bring in a few lighter scenes. What better way to do that than with a dog?
Here’s an excerpt where Logan and Karlyn find an abandoned puppy whom they’ll eventually name Lucky.
***
“What’s wrong?” Karlyn asked.Logan cut the engine and got off the bike. “Something caught my eye.” He pointed to a grove of trees. They both headed in that direction. A whine tore at his heart.“It’s a dog!” She ran ahead.“Wait! Don’t touch it,” he warned. He caught up with her. A chain attached the canine to a tree. It held the most pitiful pup he’d seen. No tags. Bone thin. The dog cowered.“Someone left him out here to die.” She bent and touched the dog’s head. He whimpered again.Logan managed to get the chain off and scooped the pooch up. A wave of emotion rolled through him. Pure love. He didn’t know if the animal would survive, but he would make every effort to see that it did.“Will you keep him?” Karlyn asked as she rubbed the dog’s ears. “Yeah.” He stroked the pup, whose heart pounded wildly. “I’ll take him into Jesse Alpine tomorrow. He can check for ticks and clean him up. Give me an idea if this little guy’ll make it. But he’s coming home with me tonight.”They returned to his motorcycle. He cradled the puppy as Karlyn slipped her arms around him. Logan suddenly experienced longings he’d shut out long ago when he’d given up Boomer to Felicity in the divorce. He wanted a dog. A home. Not a couple of rooms over the diner. A place where he could mow his yard and grill steaks and watch his kids play. There, he’d finally thought about it. Kids. He wantedkids again. No child would ever replace Alex and Ashley, but he could open his heart and let another in.And another wife. Logan wanted to love and laugh and live.He realized this half-dead Heinz 57 mutt made him decide to join the land of the living again. Logan wanted the dog.And the woman behind him.***

Welcome to my March posting for ISWG #IWSG
Link Back to IWSG
Welcome to my Marchposting for ISWG. Where we: post our thoughts, talk about our doubts, any fears we may have conquered, discuss our struggles and triumphs, and offer a word of encouragement for others who are struggling.
I write under two pen names. This one and...the other one :-). I'm trying to keep them separate, but today is the other one's turn being insecure.
I have completed a book. It is absolutely the best thing I have written to date.
I've run it by my 2 cps and my beta. One of my cps is NY Times best selling author. The other cp is the best passive verb catcher on the planet. She will not let me get away with even 1 in a story. And I've tried - really, really tried. My beta is an award winning, best selling author. I'm only pointing this out - well for two reasons - number 1 - my cps and beta are experienced authors, so their opinions count and 2 - I'm kinda proud of their accomplishments.
So what's my issue? My two cps said my latest is very good. My one cp and I have a running joke about about I should be calling Spielberg and sending it in. My beta said -
So freaking AWESOME. Your writing is…holy crap, so GOOD! I cut that from her beta read. And personally, I am proud of it. So what's wrong you ask, still wondering?
I won't sent it to my publisher. I have several published books so I am not exactly a newbie. And each time there is that self-doubt that wells up. But I have dealt and sent in the manuscript.
This time, the self-doubt/insecurity is on hyperdrive. I won't send it in until I read it one more time. I won't send it in until I've check for things I missed on the last read through. I won't send it in until there is world peace.
I know I'm being silly. I know it, but I can't seem to do anything about. So I am truly hoping that when IWSG day comes around I have sent the manuscript in.
Fingers crossed.
Writing this the day before - nope - no suck luck. Haven't sent it in. Not done book 3 and I want it done just to make sure I don't have to change anything in book 1. I'm not a plotter. Oh well.

ABOUT SARAH STEPHENSON
Sarah, who grew up in Bristol, now lives in South East London with two dogs, the occasional grandchild and a lot of mess. She’s had a chequered career as ballet dancer, cook, cleaning lady, salesgirl of outsize underwear in Littlewoods and actor. As an actor she worked mostly in the theatre: plays ranging from Shakespeare to improvised, both comedy and tragedy.Cooking combines two of her passions; travel and people. She’s catered on barges in Burgundy, private houses in America, many stately homes in England, run a delicatessen, a stall in a farmer’s market and been a judge on the Great Taste Food Awards. Good opportunities for hearing about the lives of others. Her need to write began with letters; sending home news of her adventures. At seventeen: travelling alone on the Trans-Siberian Railway and across the Sea of Japan. In Greece as a drama student, when the van blew up at the Springs of Daphne and they explored the mainland, riding on bread vans and tractors before selling their blood for a fiver and hitch-hiking home on a lorry. Or in Morocco on a solo trip, in pre-mobile phone days, when she was chucked off a bus in the desert and found herself surrounded by hundreds of camels and similar numbers of men, all in local dress.Since then Sarah hasn’t stopped scribbling and joining the Write Place, a writing class in Dartford, encouraged her to put the contents of numerous exercise books into something more concrete. These days Sarah chooses less adventurous holidays but might well send one of her characters off on a trek she doesn’t feel brave enough to make.Dougal’s Diary is Sarah’s first book.
