Plausability - Building a Universe

𝗣𝗟𝗔𝗨𝗦𝗜𝗕𝗜𝗟𝗜𝗧𝗬 – 𝗕𝗨𝗜𝗟𝗗𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗔 𝗨𝗡𝗜𝗩𝗘𝗥𝗦𝗘

With the ‘Humanity’s Dawn’ trilogy being my first venture into science fiction authorship I have built a universe, supported with a plausible timeline, that leads humanity from our present day up to the start of book 1 in the year 4545.

Although this was something that I really enjoyed doing, particularly putting together the reader magnet which explores the science, I am keen to know whether this is something that adds to the experience for you the reader?

As a positive. I would say that building the timeline has helped me identify at least another 3 points where I could explore back stories and events leading up to the current series. Is this something that you, the reader, consider an interesting and attractive thing when choosing a series to read?

Fellow Sci-Fi/Fantasy writers, please also feel free to chip in here on your experiences of building your universes, particularly any pitfalls you have come across 😊

Has the JWST Found Life?

𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗝𝗪𝗦𝗧 – 𝗛𝗔𝗩𝗘 𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗬 𝗙𝗢𝗨𝗡𝗗 𝗟𝗜𝗙𝗘?

During a routine sweep of neighbouring star systems (K2-18), the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) believes it has possibly detected something within one of the systems planets (K2-18b) atmosphere that may well be conducive to life!

Initial analysis shows that the atmosphere of K2-18b may contain traces of dimethyl sulphide (DMS). So what, I hear you say? DMS is a known chemical byproduct of life on earth, which is created by tiny marine algae and phytoplankton.

Although the planets proximity to its sun, and the extreme effects of it being paired to a red dwarf star, it may not necessarily be accommodating to life as we know it. If the planet is tidally locked, like our moon is to Earth (not spinning), the zone between the facing and offset sides could prove to be habitable though.

K2-18b is approximately 120 lightyears from Earth and takes around 33 days to orbit its cool dwarf star. The JWST will shortly be tasked to carry out a full analysis of K2-18b!

What do you think? Could life exist on K2-18b, and will JWST find anything?

WEEKLY UPDATE

𝗛𝗨𝗠𝗔𝗡𝗜𝗧𝗬’𝗦 𝗗𝗔𝗪𝗡 𝗪𝗘𝗘𝗞𝗟𝗬 𝗨𝗣𝗗𝗔𝗧𝗘 – 𝗢𝗨𝗥 𝗨𝗡𝗜𝗩𝗘𝗥𝗦𝗘!

Hi everyone,

TOMORROW is the official release of book 2! 😊

I hope to have the reader freebie of the ‘Humanity’s Dawn Timeline 1961-4545’ available around the second week of May. This will be FREE and EXCLUSIVE to followers who sign up to my monthly newsletter 😊

Julia (my artist) has now provided me with all the printer templates, and they have been submitted for quotation, with a view to putting down an order around the second week of May (see attached).

Due to team availability it looks like book 3 won’t be hitting the shelves until early 2025, but not to worry, I don’t intend for this to slow me down for the next project. I have about 3 ideas I’m really keen on, and I intend to put them to you, the followers, as to where I go next😊

Hope you all have a great week?

Kind Regards,

Martin

A Reduced AI Footprint

𝗛𝗨𝗠𝗔𝗡𝗜𝗧𝗬’𝗦 𝗗𝗔𝗪𝗡: 𝗔 𝗦𝗬𝗠𝗠𝗘𝗧𝗥𝗬 𝗢𝗙 𝗦𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗜𝗘𝗡𝗖𝗘(𝗕𝗢𝗢𝗞 𝟮 𝗢𝗙 𝟯)

𝗗𝗔𝗬𝗦 𝗨𝗡𝗧𝗜𝗟 𝗥𝗘𝗟𝗘𝗔𝗦𝗘: 4

𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗖𝗘𝗣𝗧: 𝗔 𝗥𝗘𝗗𝗨𝗖𝗘𝗗 𝗔𝗜 𝗙𝗢𝗢𝗧𝗣𝗥𝗜𝗡𝗧

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been a big talking point in the news recently, particularly around the areas of safety and its ethical application, which was something that I wanted to explore in my ‘Humanity’s Dawn’ universe.

As many science fiction writers agree, AI is a rather difficult subject. If we could truly create something that was better than us in every way, then any story of humanity would inevitably be very short lived.

In my universe, humanity decide to halt their exploration into the development of AI, around 3550 in my timeline, when humanity is plunged into the ‘Identity Wars’, finally agreeing, via the technologist faction, that the enhancement of humanity is the preferred medium. They find that in their history, they have nearly automated themselves out of the work place, finally discovering that it is work itself that helps humans find purpose in their day to day existence.

What are your thoughts? Does AI have a future role to play in the story of humanity, or is it something that we will decide to put down or limit, on ethical grounds?

BIO-ENGINEERING

𝗛𝗨𝗠𝗔𝗡𝗜𝗧𝗬’𝗦 𝗗𝗔𝗪𝗡: 𝗔 𝗦𝗬𝗠𝗠𝗘𝗧𝗥𝗬 𝗢𝗙 𝗦𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗜𝗘𝗡𝗖𝗘 (𝗕𝗢𝗢𝗞 𝟮 𝗢𝗙 𝟯)

𝗗𝗔𝗬𝗦 𝗨𝗡𝗧𝗜𝗟 𝗥𝗘𝗟𝗘𝗔𝗦𝗘: 5

𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗖𝗘𝗣𝗧: 𝗕𝗜𝗢𝗘𝗡𝗚𝗜𝗡𝗘𝗘𝗥𝗜𝗡𝗚

One of the ideas that I came across in my research for Book 2 was the idea that buildings and infrastructure could be grown rather than built, which got me looking into bioengineering. Although we have only really seen developments in food and medicine in this area as of late, is it a concept that could be extended to architectural engineering?

In Book 2 I needed humanity and the Nederig to be able to drastically increase their presence within the universe, to demonstrate the improvements that had come to pass since this alien species arrival.

In previous posts I have discussed improved terraforming techniques, but I needed something that would be able to support a rapid programme of colonisation from an infrastructure perspective. I thought if buildings could be grown, and the process accelerated, it would fit my timescales of expansion.

What do you think? Will we, in the not so distant future, begin growing buildings and homes, rather than making them from materials extracted from the Earth? Humanity's Dawn A Symmetry of Sentience An Epic Hard Military Science Space Opera by Martin Rowe
