Many of my readers have commented that they love the way in which my book explores and explains the science behind the story. If you haven’t read my work, this is an excellent place to start, as I chart the scientific steps humanity will take from 1961, up until 4545 where book 1, Compassion’s Cry starts.

Also, in my June newsletter, I explore the concept behind the universe I created and the theme surrounding book 1, to name but a few things!

So don’t delay, why not click on the link below and join the many others on a journey into my Humanity’s Dawn universe 😊

The Germs Are Coming!

𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗚𝗘𝗥𝗠𝗦 𝗔𝗥𝗘 𝗖𝗢𝗠𝗜𝗡𝗚!

When researching and keeping myself current on events in the scientific world I often come across interesting articles for discussion. So, as part of my Wednesdays science fiction blogging, I like to choose a topic that will hopefully create some debate.

Our over reliance on anti-biotics have given rise to a growing problem that the World Health Organization (WHO) has come to term Anti-Microbial Resistance (AMR). AMR occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites change over time, effectively becoming immune to the antibiotics, antivirals, antifungals and antiparasitics we use in the form of medicine to combat them!

The WHO predict that, at the current speed ANR is growing, it could be responsible for over 10 million deaths annually by 2050. To give you a better idea, that is the current mortality rate of cancer!

So in Sci-Fi we often like an apocalyptic disaster, brought on by sudden mutation or emergence of such nasties! My question to you is, could our ultimate demise be a result of the devil we do know, rather than the devil we don’t?

The Three-Boby Problem!

𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗧𝗛𝗥𝗘𝗘-𝗕𝗢𝗗𝗬 𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗕𝗟𝗘𝗠

As a science fiction writer I find myself reading a whole lot of bizarre articles and this often forms the basis for my weekly social media posting. On Mondays I like to explore scientific concepts that I have come across!
What has been particularly popular recently is the Netflix show ‘The Three-Body Problem’, based upon the first book of the ‘Remembrance of Earth’s Past’ trilogy by Liu Cixin. Does this sound familiar? Well, the title of his book is taken from an age old problem in ‘classical mechanics’!

The three-body problem is where the momentum (position and speed) of three independent masses, that have their trajectories altered by this intertwined process, is calculated using Issac Newton’s laws. It is widely accepted that, with the exceptions of certain special cases, the problem has no actual ‘closed-form solution’. This ultimately means it is to chaotic to predict!

This problem is not just applicable to orbiting galactic bodies, it can be applied to many systems with three part interactions of this nature. For example, it has been observed in quantum physics with the ‘Helium’ atom and how its constituent parts interact.

So what do you think? Could humanity, in the distant future, survive on a planet locked in orbit around a triple-star system, like in Liu Cixin’s book? These type of star systems do actually exist before anyone asks! 😊

Driving to the Moon!

𝗗𝗥𝗜𝗩𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗧𝗢 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗠𝗢𝗢𝗡!

As always it’s Friday’s fun fact! I generally tend to grab the most outlandish fact I find the week before and set you, the reader, the challenge of coming up with how this might fit into a science fiction narrative! Jokes, as always, are most welcome (it’s fun after all)😊

Did you know, that if it were possible, and you decided to take a quick trip to the moon in your car, it would take you 166 days, travelling at an average speed of 60 mph or 96 km/h, to reach your destination!

Not as close as you thought right? Could the moon eventually become the ultimate weekend getaway?

The Importance of Science Fiction

𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗜𝗠𝗣𝗢𝗥𝗧𝗔𝗡𝗖𝗘 𝗢𝗙 𝗦𝗖𝗜𝗘𝗡𝗖𝗘 𝗙𝗜𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡

When researching and keeping myself current on events in the scientific world I often come across interesting articles for discussion. So, as part of my Wednesdays science fiction blogging I like to choose a topic that will hopefully create some debate.
When I was younger I would devour anything sci-fi I could get my hands on, Asimov, Clarke Wells, Verne, you name it, I was there! I feel this is what inspired me to pursue engineering as a career path.

When we look at TV and the cinemas as of late, we see Dune, The 3-Body Problem and The Expanse series reaching out to a whole new audience of dreamers. When you look at physicists like Carl Sagan or Michio Kaku, you see how sci-fi inspired them to think outside the box!

So…….does sci-fi stimulate our imaginations? Is this subject a catalyst for the creativity and inquiry of the young minds of tomorrow? What do you think?

The Drake Equation!

𝗜𝗡𝗧𝗘𝗟𝗟𝗜𝗚𝗘𝗡𝗧 𝗟𝗜𝗙𝗘 𝗜𝗡 𝗢𝗨𝗥 𝗚𝗔𝗟𝗔𝗫𝗬 – 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗗𝗥𝗔𝗞𝗘 𝗘𝗤𝗨𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡!

As a science fiction writer I find myself reading a whole lot of bizarre articles and this often forms the basis for my weekly social media posting, and on Mondays I like to explore scientific concepts that I have come across!
The Drake equation is a probabilistic argument the is used to estimate the number of sentient extraterrestrial civilisations in our galaxy and was conceived by Frank Drake in 1961. This was to stimulate the conversation on the possibility of radio communicative life being out there. Please note, this has always been seen as an approximation, not an accurate indicator (before I get jumped on)! 😊

The Drake equation (taken from Wikipedia) is

N = R∗ x fp x ne x fl x fi x fc x L

where

N = the number of civilizations in the Milky Way galaxy with which communication might be possible (i.e. which are on the current past light cone);

And

R∗ = the average rate of star formation in our Galaxy.
fp = the fraction of those stars that have planets.
ne = the average number of planets that can potentially support life per star that has planets.
fl = the fraction of planets that could support life that actually develop life at some point.
fi = the fraction of planets with life that go on to develop intelligent life (civilizations).
fc = the fraction of civilizations that develop a technology that releases detectable signs of their existence into space.
L = the length of time for which such civilizations release detectable signals into space.

So, what’s the answer? Well…… 10 x 100% x 25% x 100% x 1% x 50% x 1,000,000 = 12,500 intelligent alien civilizations which may currently exist in our galaxy!

What do you guys think? Are there really this many intelligent alien civilisations out there?

Ever Had An Itch To Do Something?

𝗘𝗩𝗘𝗥 𝗛𝗔𝗗 𝗔𝗡 𝗜𝗧𝗖𝗛 𝗧𝗢 𝗗𝗢 𝗦𝗢𝗠𝗘𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗡𝗚?

Did you know that when the bacteria Staphylococcus Aureus comes into contact with our skin it release a chemical that activates a protein in our nerves. Our skin then sends a signal to our brains, which it then perceives as an itch!

Before everyone jumps on me, bacteria are not responsible for all itches, they can be triggered by a whole host of things that come into contact with the skin. Though this particular one is quite interesting don’t you think?

So come on then! Let’s here your thoughts, bad jokes, whatever you’ve got…… I get the funniest feeling that I’ve probably only just scratched the surface 😒
