Wednesday Discussion
𝗗𝗢𝗘𝗦 𝗣𝗟𝗔𝗧𝗘 𝗧𝗘𝗖𝗧𝗢𝗡𝗜𝗖𝗦 𝗜𝗡𝗙𝗟𝗨𝗘𝗡𝗖𝗘 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗘𝗠𝗘𝗥𝗚𝗘𝗡𝗖𝗘 𝗢𝗙 𝗟𝗜𝗙𝗘?
While staying up-to-date with the scientific world, I frequently discover intriguing articles for discussion. When it comes to my Wednesday science fiction blogging, I deliberately choose topics to incite debate.
This week, I stumbled upon an article in ‘Scientific American’ discussing the recent research of Cayman Unterborn, an astronomer from Arizona State University. He’s been studying plate tectonics and believes they may play a crucial role in the development of complex life.
According to him, around 2.5 billion years ago, volcanic activity might have kept the oceans from freezing. He thinks that this allowed the oceans to stay at the optimal temperature for the development of life.
What does this mean for exoplanets? Plate tectonics, in his opinion, might not be a common feature, with only 1 in 3 potentially habitable worlds possessing this characteristic. Even with the latest estimate update, there are still around 13 billion Earth-like planets in our galaxy!
I’d like to know your opinion. Is the presence of tectonics crucial for the development of life? Do you believe this will have consequences for us in terms of colonization or terraforming down the line?

Monday Concept
𝗔𝗥𝗘 𝗚𝗣𝗦 𝗦𝗬𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗠𝗦 𝗔𝗙𝗙𝗘𝗖𝗧𝗘𝗗 𝗕𝗬 𝗥𝗘𝗟𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗩𝗜𝗧𝗬 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗡𝗘𝗘𝗗 𝗔𝗗𝗝𝗨𝗦𝗧𝗠𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗦?
Being a science fiction writer, I read many strange articles that inspire my weekly social media posts. On Mondays, I enjoy delving into the scientific concepts I encounter.
I read about how a GPS satellite’s atomic clocks, despite their precision, will eventually become out of sync with a corresponding timekeeping system on the ground.
What are the two factors influencing the situation? According to GENERAL relativity, a clock in orbit will experience slower time, making its day 45 micro-seconds longer compared to a clock on the surface. Due to SPECIAL relativity, the clock on the GPS satellite gains 7 micro-seconds daily because it travels faster than the one on the surface.
The daily time gain of a GPS satellite (Approx. 38 microseconds) can therefore be attributed to the difference between General Relativity and Special Relativity (45 - 7 micro-seconds).
The thing that will really fry your noodle is that the satellite in orbit is actually moving more slowly through time itself due to Earth’s mass and its effect on spacetime surrounding it 😊

WEEKLY UPDATE
𝗛𝗨𝗠𝗔𝗡𝗜𝗧𝗬’𝗦 𝗗𝗔𝗪𝗡 𝗪𝗘𝗘𝗞𝗟𝗬 𝗨𝗣𝗗𝗔𝗧𝗘 – 𝗢𝗨𝗥 𝗨𝗡𝗜𝗩𝗘𝗥𝗦𝗘!
Hi everyone,
Nice to be back from a busy week working away, normal widely distributed posting/blogging will now resume. My research reading is completed and I now intend to look back over books 1 and 2, just to make sure I haven’t missed anything before FINALLY completing the storyboard. From that the development / redevelopment of new/existing characters will happen, then BOOM…….. The writing of book 3 finally starts 😊
Worthing Festival on 22nd June and is now less than a week away! Why not come down and see me, have a peek inside my books or grab yourself a FREE book mark postcard?😊
My reader freebie, ‘Humanity’s Dawn: The Extended Timeline (1961-4545)’ is now at the link below. Best thing of all……. It’s completely FREE!!!!!!!!! My gift to you, my most loyal and treasured followers 😊
This is an excellent first step into my universe if you haven’t already and a good way to understand the concepts surrounding the technology in the books, or even an interesting read for the authors amongst you looking to find out a bit more about the probable science of the future!

Hi everyone,
So this week I won’t be posting in the normal groups, only on Facebook and Instagram as the scheduling assistant allows as I’m working away in Scotland and probably won’t have the connectivity!
I am now ‘Book Fayre’ ready and have everything in place for Worthing Festival on 22nd June. Why not come down and see me, have a peek inside my books or grab yourself a FREE book mark postcard?😊

Interplanetary Groundhog Day
𝗜𝗡𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗣𝗟𝗔𝗡𝗘𝗧𝗔𝗥𝗬 𝗚𝗥𝗢𝗨𝗡𝗗𝗛𝗢𝗚 𝗗𝗔𝗬!
As always it’s Friday’s fun fact! I generally tend to grab the most outlandish fact I find the week before and set you, the reader, the challenge of coming up with how this might fit into a science fiction narrative! Jokes, as always, are most welcome (it’s fun after all)😊
Ever had that feeling that each day seems like the last and we are somehow caught in a never ending loop? Well, this could quite easily happen on the planet Venus where a day takes 243 Earth days (1 revolution on its axis) and a year takes 225 Earth days (1 revolution of the Sun); making a day on Venus longer than a year!
Ever had one of those Monday’s at work where you think it’s Friday? Let’s hear your stories 😊

What Is Hardcore/Hard Science Fiction Really?
𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗜𝗦 𝗛𝗔𝗥𝗗𝗖𝗢𝗥𝗘/𝗛𝗔𝗥𝗗 𝗦𝗖𝗜𝗘𝗡𝗖𝗘 𝗙𝗜𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗟𝗟𝗬?
Whilst researching and keeping myself current on events in the scientific world I often come across interesting articles for discussion. So, as part of my Wednesdays science fiction blogging, I like to choose a topic that will hopefully create some debate.
Something I have experienced personally is the individual interpretation of what hard science fiction actually is and a story should constitute? For me there are two camps. Camp one believes that it should rigidly stay within the confines of known science and should never venture outside of that (this camp is probably the minority). Camp two believes that the science is there to lend plausibility, as far as is reasonably practicable, but is duty bound to push the boundaries of the genre.
I am definitely in camp two! I feel that science fiction is meant to stretch our imaginations on concepts that are not currently achievable and that a hard science fiction writer should strive to generate awareness of such fictional possibilities whilst maintaining a plausible setting within which their story is set.
Recent examples of what camp one love would be the fact that the thrusters in the movie ‘Interstellar’ are silent, accurately mirroring the effects of a vacuum, or the physiological frailties experienced by the Belters in ‘The Expanse’ series.
What are your views, can we not have both? Can space opera and hard science coexist, or am I really the anti-Christ of hard science fiction (ok the accusations didn’t go that far, but you get my point)?

Is The Universe's Expansion Slowing Down?
𝗜𝗦 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗨𝗡𝗜𝗩𝗘𝗥𝗦𝗘’𝗦 𝗘𝗫𝗣𝗔𝗡𝗦𝗜𝗢𝗡 𝗦𝗟𝗢𝗪𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗗𝗢𝗪𝗡?
As a science fiction writer I find myself reading a whole lot of bizarre articles and this often forms the basis for my weekly social media posting, and on Mondays I like to explore scientific concepts that I have come across!
When we take into account all the various ways in which we can measure the expansion of our universe, such as the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), Cepheids and recent factors such as gravitational influences, we come to a figure of approximately 70 kilometres per second per megaparsec and accelerating; where a megaparsec is a distance equivalent to 3.26 million light years.
This expansion was famously first devised by Albert Einstein and is known as ‘The Cosmological Constant’. Since its conception it has been subject to much debate over the years and has caused a great deal of self-conflict within the great man himself!
But is that acceleration now slowing down? Well, according to a recent study by the National Observatory of Arizona, the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) they used to collect this data indicates that it could have in fact slowed over the past 2 billion years!
The DESI team are on a mission to shed light on the nature of ‘Dark Energy’, which is a theorised phenomenon thought to have a repelling action, making up approximately 70% of our universe. They are currently one year in to their five year mission to map its effects!
So, what do you think? Although we have now proven that there isn’t sufficient enough matter versus energy to cause the universe to eventually contract, what implications could a one-day static universe have? With such fixed points could gated travel, made famous by series such as ‘Babylon 5’ and ‘Stargate’, actually be possible in the very distant future?

Crouching Tiger, Hiddn Alien!
𝗖𝗥𝗢𝗔𝗖𝗛𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗧𝗜𝗚𝗘𝗥, 𝗛𝗜𝗗𝗗𝗘𝗡 𝗔𝗟𝗜𝗘𝗡!
As always it’s Friday’s fun fact! I generally tend to grab the most outlandish fact I find the week before and set you, the reader, the challenge of coming up with how this might fit into a science fiction narrative! Jokes, as always, are most welcome (it’s fun after all)😊
Many a conspiracy theorist loves the idea of ‘Alien Builders’, and that the ancient pyramids of Egypt, as ‘The Syrius Mystery’ by Robert K.G. Temple would like to have us believe, were built by alien visitors!
However…….. we must have obviously taken our eye off the game! Did you know that Egypt only has 138 pyramids which have been discovered to date. Now their neighbour, Sudan, must have been running some kind of alien B&B, boasting a grand total of 255 discovered to date; more than any other country in the world (currently)!
What do you think? Have the Sudanese been harbouring the lizard people David Icke has been so desperately looking for?
