Yo-Yo in Space!

˜”*°•.˜”*°• FRIDAY FACTS •°*”˜.•°*”˜

Each Friday I like to throw a fact out there, in the hope that it will spawn a vast discussion, unlocking some of the most mind blowing secrets of our very existence…....

…… ok, so maybe that is a bit farfetched! Let’s just have a bit of fun with it. I love a tenuous link, and a Dad joke even more!

“In 2012, NASA astronaut Don Pettit took a Yo-Yo onboard the ISS and proved you can do it in space! A Yo-Yo relies on the laws of conservation of angular momentum, which, providing you keep the string taut, applies in microgravity.”

😲 😲 😲 😲 😲 😲 😲 😲 😲 😲 😲 😲 😲 😲 😲 😲 😲 😲 😲 😲 😲 😲 😲 😲 😲

Thoughts? Let’s see how it goes 😊

Affects of Technology on The Printed Book?

𝐈𝐒 𝐎𝐔𝐑 𝐔𝐒𝐄 𝐎𝐅 𝐓𝐄𝐂𝐇𝐍𝐎𝐋𝐎𝐆𝐘 𝐏𝐀𝐓𝐇𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐖𝐀𝐘 𝐅𝐎𝐑 𝐀 𝐂𝐇𝐀𝐍𝐆𝐄 𝐈𝐍 𝐏𝐑𝐈𝐍𝐓𝐄𝐃 𝐁𝐎𝐎𝐊 𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐃𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐇𝐀𝐁𝐈𝐓𝐒?

So, I’m back on the subject of reading habits. Last time I looked at books it was a specific demographic (8-18), and it focused only on books. LET’S OPEN THAT WAY UP!

The below graphic is taken from ‘Statista’ and focuses on weekly screen time vs traditional media between 2011-2022 in the US. I cannot verify numbers surveyed or sources, mainly because I can’t afford $200 per month for full access, but those that can please check the link below 👇

https://www.statista.com/statistics/5...

As we can see, somewhere around 2016-2017, we saw a switch between traditional printed material and digital, which has continued to widen ever since, at roughly a steady rate. This is undoubtably due to the technological evolution of the workplace and the use of social media. So that puts that to bed, as I’m sure many of you agree. It’s a convenience thing right 😉

Now, although technology presents us with wonderful opportunities, opening reading up to people with disabilities being the main one I can think of, is this really representative of printed book wormery as a leisurely pursuit (I’m afraid I can’t find book specific data here)?

My question therefore is…… Does the presence of, and increasing access to technology in the workplace, and everyday life, mean that traditional print reader habits will change to, as a result?

Black Holes - The Beginning of the Unknown

𝗕𝗟𝗔𝗖𝗞 𝗛𝗢𝗟𝗘𝗦 – 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗕𝗘𝗚𝗜𝗡𝗡𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗢𝗙 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗨𝗡𝗞𝗡𝗢𝗪𝗡

So this week I’d like to discuss black holes, which are an important theme in my ‘Humanity’s Dawn Universe’.

It is believed that black holes are a vergence in spacetime where nothing, including light and electromagnetic waves, can escape its gravitational pull beyond its event horizon. They were theorised as early as the 18th century by John Mitchell and Pierre-Simon Laplace.

Constantly a source of real world and science fiction engagement they have fascinated both scientific and fictional minds for many years. Although the mathematics stack up, and we’re certain in our convictions that they existed, nobody had ever actually been able to directly observe one, only the movement of objects around suspected sites (indirect observation). This is due to the fact that because they consume light, we have nothing to look at in our nights sky.

That was until May 2022 when the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) project released the first ever picture of Sagittarius A Star, the supermassive black hole at the centre of our galaxy, the milky way. They also captured M87; pioneering a new technique. Utilising a series of global telescope sites, they were able to observe the activity around the targeted black holes event horizons, utilising multiple site data to enhance the angular resolution (short description, please don’t stone me)!

This is a very wide one this week, so I’ll turn it over to you guys. Can they be used for time travel? A power source? A transit point (wormholes)? Or something else?

𝗟𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀

Now that I have the tables I’m currently working with Julia (Artist) and a local printer to generate some postcards, banners for the tables and roller banners for the background. I will then put down an order for these at the beginning of April 2024. Regarding where I’ll be, the dates I have so far are below. Why not pop down and grab a signed copy? Alternatively come and meet me for a free signature on your already purchased book 😊

• Saturday - 22nd June 2024 – Worthing Fayre

The reader magnet, or more accurately, FREE reader giveaway is now complete and with my Editor (Juliette). Date when she starts reviewing is still TBC. This will only be available to followers who sign up for my monthly newsletter via my website. I’ve yet to set this functionality up so hold on for the minute. The ‘Extended Timeline (1961-1945) tracks through this time period in my fictional universe, discussing all the technological advancements as well as the political and socio-economic changes. Also has lots of hints on where I’m thing of going in the future with this time 😉

Making Sense of it All

𝐌𝐀𝐊𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐒𝐄𝐍𝐒𝐄 𝐎𝐅 𝐈𝐓 𝐀𝐋𝐋

So I recently had a chat with a lovely lady who pointed out to me that she wasn’t able to indulge in the smell I mentioned regarding new books on one of my posts. Because she was visually impaired it wasn’t something she could indulge in as her only way to access books is via audio.

I offered apologises and explained that all I was trying to do was explore the subject and meant no offence. She took none and was lovely about it, but it got me thinking? As a reader this is a simple misunderstanding, but as an author I had failed to correctly engage with a wider demographic!

As writers, although we don’t always get it right first time, a big part of our journey is to get better, and this had a profound affect on me. I needed to improve how I descriptively assess the scene before I write it. I have therefore printed off the below picture and pinned it on my writing board as a prompt. From this day forward I will ensure that consideration of all five senses will be part of my writing process.

Now I know there are people reading this who will think so what? There will also be writers who say you write what you write, the reader can choose to not read it. But I’m for bettering myself as a writer, particular as I’m quite new on the block. I can see how such a simple adjustment can really change the whole dynamic of a book for somebody with a disability.

Whether you are an Author or a reader, disabled or not, what is your take on this?

The Holographic Universe

The Holographic Universe The Holographic Universe by Michael Talbot

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Now I’ll freely admit, I read this with a view to gaining better insight into the work of David Bohm. When, I quote, the blurb reads, “This astonishing idea was pioneered by two of the world’s most eminent thinkers, physicist David Bohm, a protégé of Einstein, and the quantum physicist Karl Pribram” it draws people to that subject right? You can naturally sense my shock when you find out in the first chapter that Karl Pribram is a neuroscientist, not a quantum physicist! We then have a brief chapter (No 2) on Bohm’s actually work into interconnectedness, and how it went against current quantum physics models (that’s where the three stars come from). The rest of the book is then filled with highly speculative nonsense, where a pattern evolves saying this is mysterious, therefore it’s the holographic effect! Not really the scientific rigor one would expect! I would have been happy to read into these subjects, but rather than taking an analytical and measured approach to every there onwards subject, all it tried to do was grab at coincidences in nature to try and validate it’s inclusion. I had to break into a scan mode after page 100 and was most relieved to get too page 302 …. The End!

How Does The Earth's Magnetic Field Work?

𝙃𝙊𝙒 𝘿𝙊𝙀𝙎 𝙏𝙃𝙀 𝙀𝘼𝙍𝙏𝙃𝙎 𝙈𝘼𝙂𝙉𝙀𝙏𝙄𝘾 𝙁𝙄𝙀𝙇𝘿 𝙒𝙊𝙍𝙆?

So, todays concept is the Earth’s magnetic field. This brings to mind many questions but let’s not try to answer to many of them at once yet. Let’s deal with the science stuff first. How is the Earth’s magnetic field produced?

Below the surface layer, or mantle, there is a solid inner core, which in turn is surrounded by a liquid outer core. They believe that the outer core primarily consists of iron and nickel in liquid form, flowing around the inner core. The inner core is thought to be the same, though mainly iron, condensed into a solid form. It has also been theorised that the core may actually be made of crystal, though evidence around this is hit and miss from what I have seen (happy to be corrected 🙂).

The inner core provides the heat required to power the process, the outer core provides the electrically conductive medium for the process to happen, and the Earths rotation provides the kinetic energy and momentum required for the process. The process is known as the ‘Dynamo Effect’ and is a process through which a rotating, convecting, and electrically conducting fluid acts to maintain a magnetic field.

I’m sure there are many questions regarding this phenomenon so lets just throw it open to the floor 🙂
