How Does The Earth's Magnetic Field Work?

So, todays concept is the Earth’s magnetic field. This brings to mind many questions but let’s not try to answer to many of them at once yet. Let’s deal with the science stuff first. How is the Earth’s magnetic field produced?

Below the surface layer, or mantle, there is a solid inner core, which in turn is surrounded by a liquid outer core. They believe that the outer core primarily consists of iron and nickel in liquid form, flowing around the inner core. The inner core is thought to be the same, though mainly iron, condensed into a solid form. It has also been theorised that the core may actually be made of crystal, though evidence around this is hit and miss from what I have seen (happy to be corrected πŸ™‚).

The inner core provides the heat required to power the process, the outer core provides the electrically conductive medium for the process to happen, and the Earths rotation provides the kinetic energy and momentum required for the process. The process is known as the β€˜Dynamo Effect’ and is a process through which a rotating, convecting, and electrically conducting fluid acts to maintain a magnetic field.

I’m sure there are many questions regarding this phenomenon so lets just throw it open to the floor πŸ™‚
