You’ve heard me say that without a display of changed lives, our boasting of God’s power to save is a false advertisement. It’s true, and false advertising always results in broken trust.

The brilliant evangelist and apologist Ray Comfort calls this “Hell’s best-kept secret.” It’s when we tell people that if they just trust in Jesus, He will solve all their problems. The collateral damage is hellacious.

When sickness strikes, a precious one dies, a job is lost or a spouse breaks a vow, those promises ring false. The hurting often blame God when they are sold a false bill of goods — a God who resembles a genie in a bottle.

Ever heard someone say, “I tried that Jesus thing and it didn’t work for me”? Satan is ready to pounce on these victims of false advertising.

There is this thing called free will. Unfortunately, it’s a two-edged sword. While it can be used to choose a real relationship with Jesus Christ, the One True God, it can also be used to choose darkness — a relationship with self and sin. Either way, sin is part of the package until Jesus comes back or we meet Him in Heaven.

Because of sin, our world is not perfect. People get sick, they die. People lose jobs, spouses, fortunes and friends. The Cherokee nation knew it, too. Check out this spot-on tribal tale:

An old Cherokee chief was teaching his grandson about life. He told the boy, “A terrible fight is going on inside me. It is a fight between two wolves. One wolf is evil. He is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and self-doubt."

The old man continued: “The other wolf is good. He is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith.” He then told the boy, “This same fight is going on inside you and inside every other person, too.”

The grandson thought about it for a minute, then asked his grandfather, “Which wolf will win?” The wise old chief replied, “The one you feed.”

What wolf have you been feeding? Just know the wolf of evil thoughts will eventually devour you, and likely others as well. Thoughts become actions, and there is always collateral damage.

God of Righteous War

Steeped in the Word

July 1, 2025 – 07/01/2025

7 – The Spirit of God

1 – Unity

When everything was ready, the Lord said to Noah, “Go into the boat with all your family, for among all the people of the earth, I can see that you alone are righteous. Genesis 7:1 NLT

God of Righteous War

I’m not a fan of the Spartans. They were merciless, racist, pagans who also destroyed my namesake city with a stinking wooden horse. However, I have to give them credit for the warriors they produced.

Almost 500 years before Christ, a Spartan army of only 300 men held off a million or so armed and angry Persians at a place called Thermopylae. They were led by the legendary King Leonidas. I do love Leonidas! Leonidas wasn’t just a king sitting on a golden throne ordering troops to go fight for him. He was a warrior king.

He fought out front of his men and invited them to fight with him. Oh, how I love the idea of a warrior king! Although Alexander the Great has some very real faults, he too, was a warrior king. In one of his final battles, he ran so far ahead of his men, he engaged an entire army by himself. His men were scrambling to keep up!

With an arrow in his lung and a sword in his fist, Alexander the Great fought until his men subdued the enemy. That’s why I love Jesus. You see, real Christians don’t just serve a king. They serve a passionate, fearless warrior king.

The LORD is a man of war: the LORD is his name. – Exodus 15:3

While we will never be out in front of our God as He fights for us, we can and should fight for His glory. After all, He is unlike any warrior king before Him. He is full of mercy, compassionate, approachable and the servant of all. Yes, true leaders are servants, and we as the body of Christ need to embrace this fact!

Show me those Christians who are not just talking about the love of God but actually demonstrating it through hard work serving the poor and needy. I want to battle with those who are living proof that God never consults your history before giving you a future. Is that you? Are you a bad motor scooter for Jesus? If you are, let’s battle together as we follow our fearless Warrior King!

Which Wolf Do You Feed?

Finish Faithfully

Steeped in the Word

June 30, 2025 – 6/30/2025

6 – The Flesh of Man

30 – Acts of Redemption and Accomplishing Priestly Service

And if God cares so wonderfully for wildflowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, he will certainly care for you. Why do you have so little faith? Matthew 6:30 NLT

Finish Faithfully

The Apostle Paul knew his finish was good before he died. He even wrote that he “fought the good fight, finished the course, and kept the faith.” Not everyone can say they know how they are going to finish. Why? – Not everyone is intentional about finding their destiny in Christ; churches are full of good people with no idea how to fulfill their life’s purpose.

Your purpose is not your job or your paycheck. Your purpose is not your family or your comfortable home. Your purpose is not to teach Sunday School or show up in church every Sunday with a smile. Those things are the tools you use to reach your purpose.

What’s your purpose? To snatch, drag, tackle or lead lost people out of darkness and into light! People are dying out there, and many of us are more concerned about our tools. We need to get our eyes on the prize and be intentional. Thirteen years before his big finish, Paul put it this way:

“I am serious about finishing well in my Christian ministry. I discipline myself for fear that after challenging others unto the Christian life, I myself might become a casualty.” 1 Corinthians 9:24-27 PTV (Pastor Troy Version)

Paul was like, “Look. I’m not going to be a world changer then collapse at the end of this thing.” Paul disciplined himself toward his big finish. He predestined it through his dogged determination to follow Jesus no matter what!

Paul wasn’t living life to get to heaven. He was fighting to bring heaven to earth for generations of people. That’s you and me! The least we can do, heck, the best that we can do, is follow his example!

Do you not know that in a race, all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. – 1 Corinthians 9:24

Which Wolf Do You Feed?

Wimpy Little Devil

Steeped in the Word

June 28, 2025 – 6/28/2025

6 – The Flesh of Man

28 – Times and Seasons

Bless those who curse you. Pray for those who hurt you. Luke 6:28 NLT

Wimpy Little Devil

On that great and terrible day, the devil is pulled out of his spider hole and revealed to humanity in judgment; we will all be surprised. Isaiah the prophet paints the picture this way:

“Those who see you will gaze at you, and consider you, saying: ’Is this the man who made the earth tremble, Who shook the kingdoms, Who made the world as a wilderness and destroyed its cities, Who did not open the house of his prisoners?’” – Isaiah 14:16-17

There is a gasp in the crowd, which is expecting to see a giant dragon being pulled from the pit. Instead, a pathetic, balding, scrawny, shaking nerd comes climbing out, begging for his pathetic life.

What? Are you kidding me? Really? That’s the personification of all things evil? Why, he’s a weakling! He’s no more powerful than the wizard behind the curtain of Oz. If the devil is obviously impotent, where does he get his power?

The answer is just as shocking – from us. His power came from us. His evil had power because we cooperated with it. We held it in reverence. We feared it and, admit it, we even loved it at times. As a result, we propelled and advanced it.

The bottom line is this: the devil isn’t powerful because evil is powerful. The devil is powerful because we are powerful, and we tend to work for him. STOP IT. Give all power to the one who is power personified – Jesus!

Which Wolf Do You Feed?

Fragrant Aroma

Steeped in the Word

June 27, 2025 – 6/27/2025

6 – The Flesh of Man

27 – Things Unveiled and Revealed in God’s Presence and Light of Truth

For we are to God the fragrance of Christ among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing. – 2 Corinthians 2:15

Fragrant Aroma

Your nose is truly remarkable. In the 17,000 times you breathed in today, your nose has to clean, humidify, and, in a fraction of a second, warm or cool the air to match your body temperature. It also detects up to 2,000 scents, good and not-so-good.

You might know the name King James because of the English translation of the Bible he commissioned, but you might not know this odd monarch didn’t try to live by the words he made available to others.

Though a promiscuous homosexual, he married Anne of Denmark and had seven children. This is amazing to me, considering King James suffered from aqua phobia – the fear of water. It is said he never took one single bath in his entire life! When King James entered a room, everyone knew it.

There is nothing worse than someone who reeks of a major personal hygiene malfunction. Well, that’s not true. It’s worse to reek of a condition I call “stinkin’ thinkin’.”

Negative thoughts turn into negative words. They bring darkness and despair. Doubt does the same, as does anger and jealousy. Coveting things that don’t belong to you also brings dark thoughts because it means you’re unhappy with what God’s given you.

Then there are wild imaginations. You know, arguments you have in your head where you’re giving people a piece of your mind or getting revenge. These most likely will lead to actions. Or imagining you know what others think of you, when you have no idea.

Thoughts become words. Words become actions, and actions have consequences. One of those consequences is you begin to stink. Your words and actions will drive people from you like a rotting fish in the sun. You can’t feed the hungry, serve the poor, heal the lame, or rescue the lost if they are forced to run because of the stench.

The Bible tells us we are to be a fragrant aroma to God. Like incense, our words, actions and, yes, our very lives should smell a lot more like heaven than hell.

Which Wolf Do You Feed?

Jesus-driven thinking helps and heals. This is what the Bible has to say on the subject: For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. – Romans 8:6

That’s not you! You can control your thought life and ensure the evil wolf starves to death.
et_pb_blurb"}">Fragrant Aroma

Grounded in FaithDeclare!

I am intentional about living in His peace. Lord, give me Your eyes and heart. Show me what is in me that needs to change so I can be closer than ever to You and Your ways.

Relationship Not Religion

Steeped in the Word

June 26, 2025 – 6/26/2025

6 – The Flesh of Man

Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? Matthew 6:26 NKJV

Relationship Not Religion

In the late 1980s, I spent a lot of time under the I-45 bridge in downtown Dallas in a gathering spot for the homeless known as “Shanty Town.” I was in a Christian rock band called Destiny. We rocked the area and handed out thousands of pounds of free food to people without jobs or hope. It was fun, powerful, and unpredictable.

I was not surprised when several messed up people unplugged my speakers in mid-song and pushed over the eight-foot wooden cross we’d put up. I was, however, surprised that the messed up people trying to stop us and the message of Christ were not the homeless. They were members of the church several blocks away!

These men believed they were doing the right thing in stopping us because they thought the devil was in control of our music. Why? People in the Old Testament and throughout the “good old days” didn’t have screaming guitars, tricked-out drum kits, or amplifiers. Why, they just knew Jesus would be offended.

“We’re Methodists, and we don’t do this,” said a man in a nice suit. “This is America, and we don’t need missionaries. We also don’t need you encouraging people to stay and feeding people who are not welcome in this part of town.”

Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen. – 1 John 4:20

Now, I’m not bashing this church or any one denomination. The problem is not the church. It’s when we partner with a spirit that isn’t the Holy Spirit – the spirit of religion. Religion is always stuck in the past. Religious folk can’t imagine Jesus going to Shanty Town to save the lost because they are certain He’s always in their stained-glass church patting them on the back and complimenting them on their expensive suits.

Do you recognize the spirit of religion in your past or in your current way of thinking?

Flying Upside Down

Steeped in the Word

June 25, 2025 – 6/25/2025

6 – The Flesh of Man

25 – Grace for Grace

What sorrow awaits you who are fat and prosperous now, for a time of awful hunger awaits you. What sorrow awaits you who laugh now, for your laughing will turn to mourning and sorrow. Luke 6:25 NLT

Flying Upside Down

When the Rolling Stones released their album “Beggars Banquet” in 1968, the opening track caught the world’s attention and hasn’t really let go. “Sympathy for the Devil” was a huge hit. Rolling Stone magazine would later list it as No. 32 of the 500 greatest songs of all time. Personally, I think it was part of a prophetic voice for those times that “were a’ changing” – the last days when the devil starts to become the world’s hero.

Just two years later, a leather-bound papyrus document found in Egypt also made world news. The self-titled “Gospel of Judas” was an ancient writing that told the story of Jesus’ death from the viewpoint of Judas as the good guy. Of course, Jesus was the bad guy, and the whole thing was a setup for poor Judas. “You love evil more than good…”– Psalm 52:3

If you jump from books to modern movies, God is increasingly portrayed as the bad guy. In 2014, we couldn’t wait to see “Noah,” directed by visionary filmmaker Darren Aronofsky. Guess what we were treated to? God is a hormonal punk refusing to speak to people who desperately need Him, while fallen angels, or demons as the Bible calls them, are some kind of weird, selfless rock monsters saving the day.

Millions of unsuspecting people all over the world now know this modern fable as the story of Noah’s Ark. As they said in the 2014 movie Maze Runner, “Wicked is good.” Well, no, it’s not, and it never will be. As the day of Jesus’ return draws closer, you and I will experience a world that seems backward and upside down. You will be persecuted for doing good and loving Jesus.

Don’t fear! That means you will have to step up your goodness game because good overcomes evil. Period.

For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine… and they will turn their ears away from the truth and be turned aside to fables. 2 Timothy 4:3-4

Which Wolf Do You Feed?

Govern Your Goals

Steeped in the Word

June 24, 2025 – 6/24/2025

6 – The Flesh of Man

24 – Perfect Government Made Manifest

No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and be enslaved to money. – Matthew 6:24 NLT

Govern Your Goals

When we think of the Spirit of St. Louis, we generally think of Charles Lindbergh’s airplane, which is hanging in the Smithsonian Institute. Actually, that airplane was named after a group of people from Missouri who prepared pioneers for their journey west into the unknown.

If you were adventurous enough to head out west, St. Louis was the place you went to get equipped, both mentally and physically. The journey was tedious, treacherous, and trying. Because of this, it was only doable with the right preparation.

So it is with your journey to the next level of God’s plan for your life. You want to make sure your bags are packed correctly. Why? Because if you are going to move forward to get your upgrade, you must become skilled at achieving goals.

This is done in four steps:

1 Set achievable goals. This is all about vision. Talk to the Holy Spirit.

2 Put together a strategy and a plan. This is all about getting wise counsel, doing your research, and being teachable. If you’re not teachable, you’re in trouble.

3 Take action. This is all about courage. Again, talk to the Holy Spirit.

4 Review and stay on track. This is all about meditation and contemplation. Think God thoughts, practice stillness, and go after peace as you consider what works, what needs a tweak, and what needs to be thrown out.

I can tell you from personal experience that if you take these four steps seriously, you will become very skilled at achieving goals. This makes you a world changer!

Want to be a world changer? Want to find your life’s purpose and bring the Kingdom of Heaven to earth? Get some oil for your lamp! Then the kingdom of heaven shall be likened to ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. Now, five of them were wise, and five were foolish. Those who were foolish took their lamps and took no oil with them, but the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps. – Matthew 25:1-4

Which Wolf Do You Feed?

Morning Comes

Steeped in the Word

June 23, 2025 – 6/23/2025

Peace be with you, dear brothers and sisters, and may God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ give you love with faithfulness. Ephesians 6:23 NLT

Morning Comes

While it is true that God will lead you through some painful places in your walk with Him, it is also true He has an end for your pain. Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning. – Psalm 30:5

Know this: Sometimes, you are just called to endure some things. You are called to tough some things out, but for every midnight experience, Jesus has a morning waiting. As sure as the sun will rise, your joy is coming.

You see, God is trusting you and counting on you to face it like the person He’s called you to be. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away. – Revelation 21:4

See, it is not that God doesn’t want you to feel pain. It’s that He doesn’t want you to feel pain forever. Hell is just that – forever. That would be tragic.

Which Wolf Do You Feed?

See How Courageous

Steeped in the Word

June 22, 2025 – 6/22/2025

6 – The Flesh of Man

22 – Personal Revelation

“Your eye is like a lamp that provides light for your body. When your eye is healthy, your whole body is filled with light. Matthew 6:22 NLT

See How Courageous

In the arena of Promised Land living, you never see what God has given you until you are willing to walk in it first. In other words, you have to be able to walk in it before you get it.

Every place on which the sole of your foot treads shall be yours: from the wilderness and Lebanon, from the river, the River Euphrates, even to the Western Sea, shall be your territory. Deuteronomy 11:24

When God told Joshua to cross the flooded Jordan River and go into the Promised Land, He did something different than when they left Egypt to cross into the wilderness. Both involved a miraculous crossing of water. Who can forget about Moses and the parting of the Red Sea?

But here at the gateway to the Promised Land, a different courage and trust was required as the key. The water didn’t part first like it did when they crossed the Red Sea. This was the Promised Land, and there was a new set of rules: they had to step into the water first. They had to start pursuing the Promised Land before the waters ever parted.

If you want upgrade, if you want blessing and more of Jesus, the way does not present itself until you move toward it. You have to step into it first.

…and as those who bore the ark came to the Jordan, and the feet of the priests who bore the ark dipped in the edge of the water (for the Jordan overflows all its banks during the whole time of harvest), that the waters which came down from upstream stood still, and rose in a heap very far away at Adam, the city that is beside Zaretan. So the waters that went down into the Sea of the Arabah, the Salt Sea, failed, and were cut off; and the people crossed over opposite Jericho. Joshua 3:15-16

Which Wolf Do You Feed?

Jesus-driven thinking helps and heals. This is what the Bible has to say on the subject: For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. – Romans 8:6

That’s not you! You can control your thought life and ensure the evil wolf starves to death.
et_pb_blurb"}">See How Courageous

Grounded in FaithDeclare!

God commanded me to be strong and courageous; that tells me that He believes I can be. I listen to Him and follow all that He tells me to do. I will not hold back; I will step forward because I trust Him.
