USA Veterans Day Paranormal-Scope

Happy Veterans Day! Thank you for your service to your country. My family has had several veterans in it. My dad was in the Navy, and his brother was in the Army. Our military is wonderful and I’m grateful for them in protecting our freedoms.

I am not qualified to read either stars or planets. I am intimately linked to the paranormal in the world in many ways. So are you.

The paranormal-scope is for entertainment and is not meant to guide your life.

Aries:
Gremlins are great in networking. Go out and meet people in your profession. Find out what jobs are available. Do your research before jumping on any opportunity. Is it worth leaving what you have?

Taurus:
Mermaids love meeting new people. You never know who you will meet that will bring a light into your life.

Gemini:
Faeries use this time to finish projects they started during the year. In that way, the New Year is open for new experiences.

Cancer:
Werewolves are planning to take some courses. It’s always good to learn something new. Decide what you want to learn and go after it.

Leo:
Vampires can collaborate with others when they wish to. Try some collaborating and see what you can do together.

Virgo:
Shapeshifters are meticulous when it comes to written agreements and contracts. Do the same. Take care in what it says will be done. Is there an end date?

Libra
Goblins enjoy art shows, museums, and concerts. Try it. You might like it too.

Scorpio:
Unicorns don’t know everything and respect when talking with someone can add clarity. Listen to others and learn.

Sagittarius:
Sirens are working on having stronger good habits. Bad habits wait money and time. Banish them. Consider focusing on building your good habits instead.

Capricorn:
Sprites love racing through things but lately it has become overwhelming. Do one thing at a time at an enjoyable pace.

Aquarius:
Pixies are examining their budgets and looking for gig to get more money. Review your budget.

Pisces:
Elves like to dress up, smile, and go to parties. First impressions do count when meeting new people. Besides you have the opportunity to have fun. Go for the fun.

Life Tools: Weathering Transitions By Susan Hanniford Crowley

Ending of Autumn on the Lake Ending of Autumn on the Lake – Photo courtesy of Susan Hanniford Crowley

The Life Tools today are about transitions, not only between Autumn and Winter but life in general. Some transitions are fun, but most involve some element of pain. Some seem unbearable. I look at the trees preparing to sleep for the winter. Most shed their leaves. Certain ones stay green through the cold times. Remember those below are tools. Pick and choose what you want to do.

One way of preparing for a transition is decluttering. Only get rid of those things you don’t need anymore and your family doesn’t want. I go through books. I LOVE books! So I’m making bags for the used bookstore that sells and buys books. I’m going through clothes too. Have space for the things you really love.

A dear friend of mine is a photographer. She was downsizing and couldn’t take all her framed photographs. She gifted a framed photo to each of her friends. I was deeply honored to receive one.

Another way is to make a family and friends album. It’s your choice whether it is more of a scrapbook or just photos. Remember to put names and dates. The scrapbook appeals to me as I want to add the concert and convention programs and maybe all the pictures from conventions and family vacations too.

Setup your home so its primary purpose is comfort and ease. I just brought up my Christmas village box from the storage room. I will set it up in the lowest shelf in my dining room cabinet. I’ll be bringing up my angel making box next. Notice I didn’t bring up both boxes. Try to do one thing at a time. Savor doing things. Don’t be in a rush.

This one life tool you might not want to do. Go to funerals of family and/or friends. It gives the heart closure. You will likely meet other people you know. Talk with them and go out and eat . Memories can help us get through things.

Revive a hobby for use during bad weather. Set up a reading/writing/hobby nook for yourself. All you need is a comfy chair. a table, and a good light.

You might also set up board games for use by the family when the power goes out. If you still have power but the weather is fierce, make a movie list or book list. New coloring books for small children.

Set up your emergency box. Here is a good site that gives you a list of what you need: https://www.ready.gov/kit Once it is set up and in a handy place, forget about it. This is something to do to make transitions easier.

Stay connected with family/friends. You don’t need a Thanksgiving to get together. Go bowling with friends. Visit older members of your family and learn about them.

If you are feeling anxious about a transition, consider doing things to relieve your anxiety or sad feelings. Take to a counselor. You may feel shaky inside. Here is a great site with helplines. I chose the page with the helplines for the United States of America to share with you. But you can choose your country on the main page. https://findahelpline.com/countries/us

You are important so take great care of yourself. I’m going to start yoga again. One of my daughters goes to a pottery class. I got to tea with my gal pals. Do something that makes you smile and/or laugh everyday.

This is a funny tool. Make a surprise box. Buy several small things, wrap them in the same wrapping paper, and put them into a box. Make a hole in the box so you can pull something out but can’t see inside. This can be a once a week surprise for you or a fun thing to do at parties.

Whatever you choose, be safe, and keep those you love close.

All the best always,
Susan

Life Tools: Loving Autumn Part 3 By Susan Hanniford Crowley

The beginning of my Lady Fallon’s Drago ns series. The next book coming out in 2025.

The Life Tools today continue on ‘Loving Autumn.’ The Fall foliage is passing already, some trees already bare. Some still hold their brilliance of orange, yellow, and red.

Autumn speaks to my heart like no other season. The blending of all this splendor into winter’s cold solitude, can make a person feel lonely. Don’t feel lonely. I watched a documentary where scientists explained that trees and plants in nature communicate with one another with their roots.

Changing the subject for a moment, I do admit that I love snow. Not the shoveling part, but the falling flakes each different from the other. I love examining each flake as up close as possible.

The blending part between the seasons has its own adventures calling to me. I’ve never been good with adventures. Walking blindly into something new sets the butterflies in my stomach to growl. It’s best to go on an adventure with a friend.

What can I do to live through this transition that many feel but never realize or talk about? Let’s see.

1. Go on an adventure with a friend. Or several friends.
2. Make a list of what you’d like to do knowing up front you’re not going to do them all and that’s okay.
3. Make out your Christmas cards and mail them. A friend does this every year and is proud to know her card reaches every one first.
4. Learn a new computer program just for fun.
5. Learn from the elders in your family your roots. If you don’t have access to your roots, learn instead about the roots or history of your country. Go to places that inspire your heart historically.

Aside: Being an author, I feel like a tree in the forest. I am connected to all the other authors through their and my roots. I have visited the Mark Twain House in Hartford, CT., the Laura Ingalls Wilder museum in Walnut Grove, Minnesota, and the home of Robert Burns in Dumfries, Scotland among others. (links go to their museums) What historical figures are you inspired by?

6. Take a nap.
7. Take a bubble bath.
8. Get some books for your winter reading. If you already have books you haven’t read, make a to-read list. Graphic novels and comic books do count.
9. Admire the scenery of where you are and on any trip you go on. Day trips included. Take photos.
10. Invite friends over for a movie night or a feast. (You don’t have to wait until Thanksgiving to have a feast.)

Whatever you choose, be save, and keep those you love safe.

All the best always,
Susan

Happy Halloween Paranormal-Scope

I love the whole carving the pumpkin tradition. In England, they carved beets. In Ireland and Scotland, they carved turnips. When immigrants came to the USA from those countries, pumpkins were the easy to get vegetable that was carved. Now, put your carving tools away. Let’s see what the paranormal-scope says.

I am not qualified to read either stars or planets. I am intimately linked to the paranormal in the world in many ways. So are you.

The paranormal-scope is for entertainment and is not meant to guide your life.

Aries:
Gremlins model for pumpkin carvers. They have the greatest smiles. Smiling does break the ice with people you are about to meet.

Taurus:
Mermaids string pearls to wear lacking pumpkins, but they like to see the ones people leave on their boat decks. Go out and admire some pumpkins or other Halloween displays.

Gemini:
Faeries love to sit in Jack O’ Lanterns when their lights go out. Off course, the faery folk are off to home when dawn stretches across the land. Enjoy the festive times. Make some new friends.

Cancer:
Werewolves get together with their pack to carve pumpkins. Why do all their pumpkins look like werewolf faces? Take some photos of the sights you are enjoying. Be sure to date and label them.

Leo:
Vampires wander the night enjoying the parties and holiday displays. They cordially greet others with capes and fangs. Remember not to go off anywhere with a stranger. Stay with your group when on tours.

Virgo:
Shapeshifters love the autumn colors and flower arrangement with gourds and pumpkins. Don’t limit your artistry.

Libra
Goblins wait and buy pumpkins late and then smash them for fun or leave them out in the woods for bears and deer to eat. You can buy a fresh pumpkin and make a pie for yourself.

Scorpio:
Unicorns enjoy standing in the middle of the displays so people think they are part of it. Actually they’ve seen a real unicorn and not realize it. Take in the wonderous lights and displays but look carefully too.

Sagittarius:
Sirens collect the acorns that have fallen into the water and make necklaces. They change form to go to the parties. They want to see how many they can entrance. Beware.

Capricorn:
Sprites slow down and rest inside of lit Jack O’ Lanterns. The fire warms them as they watch unseen the strangely dressed people come and go. Go forth and be strangely dressed.

Aquarius:
Pixies dress in costumes and walk beside children to trick-or-treat. It’s the only time of year pixies can get candy. When they get back home, they don’t share. If you have a lot of candy, share it and your time with others.

Pisces:
Elves dance in the lighted displays. They too love to join in parties as themselves. You might meet an elf or two. Smile and be polite, and they might leave you a gift of good luck.

Guest Blog: Rocky Road to Love by Cindy Tomamichel

Rocky Road to Love by Cindy Tomamichel

People who have never written a romance often think it will be easy. I was the same, and thought starting a romance novel would be a good way to kick off my writing career. I’d use a town I was familiar with, and a career for my main character that I knew. What could be easier?

Sweet Summer child! That was over twenty years ago now, and it was a valuable lesson I taught myself. It wasn’t easy. I had all the chapter outlines, character profiles as recommended by the vast array of writing advice books I read. The book stagnated at 20,000 words for many years because I didn’t have the skills to recognise what the problems were.

It took me several more books and experience in writing before I realised what it needed and could finish it. A romance can’t just be two people meet and there you are – done! It needed conflict, problems that could not be solved with a chat, and some character growth. Additionally, reading how other authors write will not teach you how you write – that is something you must discover. Indeed, trying to copy other authors methods can lead to disaster – I am so not a planner, and character sheets and detailed plot outlines destroy me and the book. The burst of creativity is gone and I know the ending and I lose the book. Don’t ask how I know this, I still mourn the gritty thriller that will never be.

But what about the book? I did write it and finish it, and I’m pretty happy with it. Rocky Road to Love is a fun read, a happy ever after with some comedy moments. It has suspicions – the possible boyfriend – the actual girlfriend! It has danger – snakes and a dust storm. And finally it has love – the two characters have a passion for their work that drives them, and eventually a passion for the other and their work that gives good promise of a good life together.

Sandra is an exploration geologist working at Broken Hill, a mining town deep in the red heart of Australia. She is striving to find a new mineral deposit that will bring wealth to the town. Enter Dan, an archaeologist, suspicious that Sandra will destroy heritage sites to get her way. There is initial antagonism, then attraction, then despair as their goals collide with no clear solution.

I worked as an underground mine geologist in Broken Hill, and have volunteered on archaeological sites, so the characters have I hope, a ring of authenticity. I also tried to add in a love of animals, the scents of nature, and some humour. It was a while ago now, but I can still smell the scent of the desert, the red dust underfoot, and the laidback nature of remote towns in Australia.

Blurb

A promise made to a dying grandfather drives Sandra’s life.

Dan’s passion for the past will destroy her dreams for the future.

Hopes for the past and future collide under the blazing desert sun.

Geologist Sandra knows it is out there—the El Dorado find that will save the future of the desert mining town of Broken Hill. Nothing will stand in her way to keep her promise to her grandfather, who died trying to find it.

Archaeologist Dan knows how fragile the past can be. History can be erased by the ambitious. It is his job to protect it —no matter the cost.

The harsh Australian desert will challenge them both, tear apart their hopes, test their love, and threaten their lives. How will the present save the past and the future?

Excerpt

Sandra grimaced and plucked her sweaty work shirt off her skin, shaking the heavy cotton to get a breeze. But here in the town of Broken Hill, in the middle of the Australian desert, there would be no relief from the heat. She had grown up with it, gotten used to the days that hit temperatures so high you could fry an egg on the car roof, and nights where the sheets were soaked with sweat as you tossed and turned, waiting for a cool change that never came.

She pushed open the door of the café, the jingle of the bell one she had heard since she was a small child.

“Hey, Sandy girl,” Mrs Mac said, smiling. “The usual?”

“Maybe a different sandwich today, please. Surprise me.” Sandra wiped her face with the sleeve of her shirt. She opened the fridge and grabbed a large bottle of water and pressed it to her forehead.

Mrs Mac peered at her closely. “You feeling the heat today? They predicted a scorcher again. Go sit under the air con while I get your lunch done.”

Sandra smiled and did as she was told. Mrs Mac had been like an aunt and she still fussed over Sandra as if she were thirteen, not thirty. There were yellowed photos of her, all skinned knees and dirt, pinned up in the café kitchen. She checked her hair in the mirror behind the counter and used a napkin to scrub some black grease from her cheek. For a few moments she relaxed, enjoying the chilled air against the back of her neck before sighing and digging a vibrating phone out of her pocket. What was it now? The email was marked urgent from the office secretary, Audrey.

Archaeologist Dan Makepeace was flying in this afternoon. Where had she heard that name? She flicked a quick email query to a geologist friend and checked her schedule. If there was an archaeologist arriving, she should check all the new exploration sites again, and fast. No afternoon in the cool of the office today. Sandra sighed. Her fingers jabbing fast at the screen, a message went to Audrey at the office, telling her of the change in plans, and checking that Audrey put her on the out board so people knew where she was just in case something happened to her. Looking at rocks in the desert sometimes also involved snakes, flat tyres, or any number of accidents. Even today, people died out in the desert despite search and rescue teams like the SES. If the State Emergency Services trained personnel couldn’t find you, the odds of survival were very low indeed.

Like her grandfather. There were no rescue services back in those days, and by the time he reached town there had been little anyone could do. He had been looking for the huge mineral deposit, another Broken Hill, that would save the town and provide another century of mining prosperity. When his old Land Rover had finally given up the ghost, he had walked the fifty kilometres to town in the middle of a dust storm at the height of the desert Summer. He had been a tough old bloke, Sandra mused. No one else could have made it that far. She shivered and glanced down at her watch. Bloody hell, was that the time already?

Grabbing a roll from the counter, she called her thanks and dashed out the door, not waiting for a reply. After the freezing air conditioning, the street felt like an oven. She chugged down some water and threw her lunch into the front seat of the work ute. Starting the vehicle, Sandra frowned, calculating time and distances – I’ll have to move to get everything done. Changing gears, Sandra headed out of town. The broad streets, with their deep gutters for the rare flash storms, were soon replaced by the red sand tracks of the desert.

“Damn this man,” Sandra cursed as she scrabbled around for her lunch. Juggling the steering wheel with her knees, she battled with the plastic wrap and bit into the roll.

“Oh, dear god, what the hell is this?”

The vehicle veered off road and bumped over rocks and thick grass. Dropping the roll to grab the steering wheel, she wrenched the vehicle back onto the road, and then realised she was covered in beetroot. Yuck, beetroot, vegemite, and a banana? You have got to be kidding me. She gulped some water, trying to take the taste out of her mouth. What had Mrs Mac been thinking?

She checked her watch. Okay, an hour to look over the sites, and then to the airport. She took some deep breaths and focused on the countryside. Heat haze shimmered off the red gravel road, the distance floating, wavering as though it didn’t quite exist. Each side of the road was lined with tall ghost gums, their smooth white bark glowing. Dotted around were a few old grey sawn stumps showing that this was all regrowth from the tree felling of the early days of the town. Thick round tussocks of spinifex grass shone silvery yellow, their graceful shapes belying the needle-sharp points of the leaves. Most of the vegetation was the salt bush, a tough shrub with papery white leaves that withstood any level of heat.

Assorted Sundries on Saturday Waning Gibbous Moon By Susan Hanniford Crowley

This is my sweet romance collection available at https://www.amazon.com/stores/author/B004YXOGXG

The assorted sundries today are intriguing and may give you the giggles.

I didn’t technically see the Supermoon on the 18th. It did light up my bedroom with a blaze of golden light. That was good enough for me. Laughs.
We now have two kittens. They are trying to acclimate to living in a house. Right now they are snoozing under my sofa. All the experts say they will come out when they are ready. Last night, I slept on the sofa to keep them company and they went to sleep on top of me. Giggles.
I haven’t written or edited my book for five days and it makes my brain feel unhappy. I have been continually kitten-proofing the house.
I have watched Practical Magic, one of my favorites! I am wowed by Agatha All Along. If you are a fan of WandaVision, which is the story of Wanda (the Scarlet Witch) and her husband Vision, both members of the Avengers, you may like it.
Yes, we do have pumpkins now! But we do have to buy some Halloween candy. We bought some last week and it’s gone already. I don’t know how that happened. Giggles.
Some of you might be thinking: what is a waning gibbous moon. It’s when it was been a full moon and each night there is a sliver in darkness making it less full. It is working itself back to a half moon night by night. I just like these kind of things.

The weather and world is ever changing. Be safe. Keep those you love close.

All the best always,
Susan

Yes, I Missed Seeing the Northern Lights Again Paranormal-Scope

Yes, I did miss seeing them again. Oh well, the best laid plans of mice… oh you know the saying. That doesn’t mean I will stop trying. It will happen.

I am not qualified to read either stars or planets. I am intimately linked to the paranormal in the world in many ways. So are you.

The paranormal-scope is for entertainment and is not meant to guide your life.

Aries:
Gremlins have worked slowly to build their reputations as mechanics. Keep you eye on the goal and don’t be distracted. All that glitters is not necessarily gold.

Taurus:
Mermaids are cautious with their treasure. Keep tight control on your budget. There may be some things you could do without. It will benefit you later.

Gemini:
Faeries take a long view of life since they live longer. Get rid of the things you don’t need. Plan out what you really want to do in your life.

Cancer:
Werewolves are great at collaborating. Try it. Be part of a team and see how it can benefit you.

Leo:
Vampires don’t have to worry about health, but the rest of us do. Keep doctor appointments and discuss how you can do and feel healthier.

Virgo:
Shapeshifters know when it’s time for a change. Create your new world before living in it. It’s just easier that way.

Libra
Goblins are expert money managers. Watch that budget. Reign in your spending. You will need a surplus later.

Scorpio:
Unicorns are deep thinkers. They are also watchful for a change in the tides. Opportunities are coming your way. Be watchful.

Sagittarius:
Sirens keep their secrets close. You should too.

Capricorn:
Sprites are all about self-care. Eat healthy. Sleep well. Consult your physician before changing your exercise routine. Be your best self by feeling well.

Aquarius:
Pixies recognize when it’s time for a healing from the pain of the past. Move into your happiness with yourself. You are worthy.

Pisces:
Elves feel the call of the coming winter. Before it gets cold, reconnect with those you love. Cherish those who love you.

Assorted Sundries on Saturday By Susan Hanniford Crowley

Photo by Vincent Guth on Unsplash

The assorted sundries today are noteworthy or fun! Or both!

I am in search of the Northern Lights again. The bonus today is a comet which one can view with the naked eye in Connecticut, New Jersey, and New York. Here’s more about it. https://www.cbsnews.com/newyork/news/rare-comet-visible-from-tri-state-area/
Writing even in cramped locations! I was taking a dear one for a test in a hospital. The travel time round trip was three hours on two highways. I waited in a very compact waiting room. The chairs were small and weird with a middle arm piece dividing it into two seats.

When someone sat in the other seat, they were too close. It is odd to have that kind of furniture in a hospital when places are still wrestling with Covid outbreaks.

Even being cramped into a smaller space, I was undaunted. I took out my notebook and started work on the time travel book I have been working on a bit at a time. I usually take it out if I had a dream of it, and I did. I was very pleased by the six dynamite pages I wrote.

At the moment, I’m going through my manuscript for my 2nd dragon book. I’m finding stuff to fix and parts that are fantastic when I expand them.

I am kitten proofing my house. Currently, they are too small and need more time with their mom.

If you haven’t gotten your pumpkins yet, this is the time to get them.

If you haven’t been to a corn maze, that could be fun!

There are also places where you can see decorated pumpkins. Pumpkintown USA was recommended to me. https://www.pumpkintown.com/

Sitting and watching a Halloween movie with a pumpkin spice flavored drink. Resting is also a good thing to do.

The weather and world is ever changing. Be safe. Keep those you love close.

All the best always,
Susan

Assorted Sundries on Sunday Again By Susan Hanniford Crowley

Not all the leaves have changed.

My assorted sundries are few but important today!

I went to a Harvest Festival with my grandchildren and discovered something. I am woefully out of shape and need to do more walking to save my poor body.My 2nd dragon book is delayed by circumstances beyond anyone’s control, so I’m going through it and filling in more of the delicious and delightful details that made people so happy with the first one. I am rearranging my things and getting rid of some and packing others. Because every author should keep their different versions of print manuscripts to prove they are the author in court, the keeping of them needs to be more systematic. Digital copies can be altered. Today was a beautiful day where I was. Enjoy the days like this. Sometimes less words are more. Finally there is such a thing as having too many cookies. Smiles.

The weather and world is ever changing. Be safe. Keep those you love close.

All the best always,
Susan
