Things I Noticed in a Zone of Calm By Susan Hanniford Crowley

Hi Everyone,

It is the day after Independence Day in the USA. Some people are still celebrating and will be all weekend. That’s what happens when a holiday falls on a Friday.

I noticed that this appears to be the season of Day Lilies. As I was driving to my granddaughter’s birthday party, orange Day Lilies were everywhere. There were a few pink, but most were orange. I read somewhere that orange was a healing color. That would be good.

Of late, I have been enjoying a show called Comic Book Men starring Kevin Smith, Walt Flanagan, Bryan Johnson, Mike Zapcic, and Ming Chen. I can’t help myself but laugh as they show real life in the comic book store known as Kevin Smith‘s comic book shop, Jay and Silent Bob’s Secret Stash, in Red Bank, New Jersey. It’s funny and I enjoy their adventures in search of great items for their store, talking with customers who buy or want to sell what they have, and discussing the comic book world.

I love comic books, but especially graphic novels. I am always 10 years behind the rest of the buyers. Recently, I read Elvira, Mistress of the Dark: Witch Way to the Apocalypse? I think Elvira is wonderfully funny. I will be looking for the next book.

My cat Evie has her post on top of the sofa. That places her always looking over my shoulder.

I am working on my editor’s edits of my next book. Okay, I will when I’m done with this post.

Behind the Book: Dirigibles! Spies! Lust! By Susan Hanniford Crowley

I dream my books, but sometimes the story unfolds in the dream world after I’ve been asked a question. In this case, one of my earlier publishers asked if I could write a steampunk romance for an anthology. So I had a general topic and given a word count. Publishers usually give their authors word-count.

I didn’t have to do much prior research, as I was already fond of the steampunk genre. If you are not familiar, let me give you the inside track. Steampunk is a spin-off of science fiction, fantasy, and speculative fiction. In many cases, the author chooses a specific past period. Within the story, you integrate some futuristic elements and 19th century steam engines.

Some authors choose fantasy worlds. The wild west works well, too.

I am a lucid dreamer. That means I know I’m dreaming. As soon as I wake up, I rush to write the story down in my dream journal. When I am asked whether I can write a particular type of tale, I go to sleep and inside the dream, pose the question. When the dream happens, I step back and let it be. I write all my books this way.

The first thing I saw in my dream was the lavender dirigible. When her father was taken to debtor’s prison, the only way she could pay his debt and free him would be to work for Mrs. Bright.

Here’s what the book is about: (Note: It is a steamy book.)

In this hot steampunk romance, the adventure begins in the sky over alternate history Victorian London, which is filled with dirigibles, but we focus on one, the infamous brothel within a lavender dirigible called Mrs. Bright’s Tea Room.

Euthalia has no choice but to work for Mrs. Bright. In walks handsome airship Captain Travers, the Queen’s spy. Sparks aren’t the only things flying with Travers, Euthalia’s first customer.

Behind the Book: A Wedding! Shapeshifters! Vampires! Elves! What Could Go Wrong? By Susan Hanniford Crowley

Dreams are a funny thing! Sometimes they lead me back to characters whose story continues. That’s how Vampire in the Basement was born.

I’ve been to Maine several times and am awed by its gorgeous oceanside and forests every time. I haven’t climbed their mountains yet.

Mythology tells us that the wilderness is home to many paranormal and supernatural beings. Since dictionaries were vague on definitions. I came up with my own definition for my books:

A supernatural being is a human who has a supernatural gift. Examples: shapeshifters, witches, seers, werewolves, etc.
A paranormal being is not human. Examples: elves, trolls, vampires, ghosts, mermaids, elves, leprechauns, etc.

In the state of New York, there is the Supernatural Council, which includes supernatural beings as well as paranormal folk. Their purpose is to blend in with humanity and lead ordinary human-style lives. Everyone just wants to be happy. Collectively, both groups are sometimes referred to as supernaturals or Nats.

I am often asked about the Arnhem Knights. Vampire King Max Vander Meer started the organization long ago in various places. The ones that I tend to focus on are the Arnhem Knights of New York. They take an oath to protect humans from vampire death and to assist supernaturals in trouble.

A note about Shapeshifters: I’ve studied the Saga of the Volsungs. It is an Old Norse legend about a family who shapeshifters, but not all to the same animal. When it comes to shapeshifting, I use them as my reference for my books.

Let’s go back to Maine and weddings. I laughed when I woke from the dream of Regina and Gregor’s wedding. This sequel continues the story of the supernatural first responders who met and fell in love in When Love Survives. (You might want to read When Love Survives first.)

After I wrote the tale, I realized it was my homage to A Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare. The forest is mystical. Unlike Shakespeare, we don’t have any humans without gifts in our story.

Behind the Book: A Stalker! Demons! Snow! Steamy Love! Oh, my, by Susan Hanniford Crowley

Hi Everyone,

There is a lot behind this book, primarily my childhood. My favorite part of going to New York every year before Christmas was looking at the holiday window displays of the department stores in Manhattan. I loved Lord & Taylor, Macy’s, and Saks the most. There is nothing so fascinating as seeing not only a scene from a faery tale, but when it comes to life through animatronics.

Since I visited my grandmother and aunt frequently in New York City, I was always taught to be aware of my surroundings and what to do if I got into trouble.

Going back to the beauty of the moment, not only in the display windows but in the city at large, fascinated me to be standing there when suddenly all the lights in the city went on and glowed on the snow.

As a child, even though I was transfixed by all the lights, I noticed things. In this very busy place, police officers were always nearby. Some people looked very warm in their fur coats. They often looked annoyed and muttered, “Get out of my way.” Other people were not really dressed for the weather. My coat was cloth but had a faux fur collar. I had gloves and a hat, so I guessed that I wasn’t poor. I wasn’t rich either. I was a middle person.

Whenever I came out of the store and had money left, I would tell my aunt we had to give the person waiting by the door with a basket some money. Sometimes it was the Salvation Army. Sometimes not. I always give to the Salvation Army because my great-grandmother on my father’s side was a Major in the Salvation Army.

Things I remembered:
1. Store holiday window displays, especially animatronic ones
2. People with their hands out asking for money
3. When the first snowflakes appeared, my aunt said, “Time to go home.”
4. When the wind roared fiercely down the avenue, people hurried into the nearest building to wait it out.
5. I remembered all the beautiful lights made me happy.

Behind the Book: A New Orleans Tale of Power & Love by Susan Hanniford Crowley

Hi Everyone,

Behind every book is a story. A long time ago, I dreamt of a vampire named David who asked God to help him find true love. In the dream, and at the same time, a young woman was distraught after receiving a call that her mom had died in New Orleans, and then she was robbed. She could no longer get to the funeral.

She climbed over the railing on the Brooklyn Bridge, thinking to end it all. Then she changed her mind. While climbing back, Laura slips and falls.

Every night, I dreamt about David and Laura’s adventures through hate and love. He was willing to walk through Hell for her, even if it meant never seeing her again.

Every morning, I wrote everything down as fast as I could. Even with the details in the dreams, which were amazingly accurate, I found holes in my knowledge. That meant I would have to do research. Some of it never appears in the book. Some does.

Here is a list of what I did:
1. Went to New Orleans
2. Studied Hurricane Katrina
3. Studied the number of dialects and languages in New Orleans
4. Studied the customs of the city, including the practice of voodoo
5. For more on David, I went to Gettysburg, where he had fought in the 47th New York Infantry during the Civil War.

Then it took almost a year of dreaming and recording each dream in my dream journal when I awoke.

What always struck me about David was that he wasn’t a stereotype of vampires. He used his abilities instead to help rather than hurt.

He had made her a vampire, but her secret family power remained. She had to discover herself as well. Did she truly love David? When evil surrounds them, will their love prevail?

Behind the Book: A Tale about the Twin Towers by Susan Hanniford Crowley

Hi Everyone,

Behind every book is a story. When Love Survives is about a time when the people of a great city (New York City) had pain thrust upon them on a monumental scale. It is September 11th, and in NYC, the Twin Towers have been struck by planes hijacked by terrorists.

Growing up, I would spend part of every summer in this city with my grandmother and aunt. I was the eternal tourist who studied all the places and enjoyed all the flavors. New York City was and still is a great melting pot for people who come from around the world with their hopes and dreams.

As with all my books, it began with a dream years after the event. It made me shudder and cry, remembering it as if it were yesterday. It also inspired me in all the ways that the people of the city worked together to help others on that day and the bleak days that followed.

After I wrote the story down, I knew I needed to know more. I mentioned it to a friend. She surprised me by loaning me newspapers all saved for posterity in plastic.

I read endless stories of courage and caring. I read about the last phone calls to loved ones that abruptly ended. I read about the cop who kept going in to get more people out, but finally never came out again. I read about the elementary school principal who guided his students hand-in-hand to a school further away, after seeing the plane hit the North Tower. The stories were endless. First Responders came from everywhere to help.

It was very natural to see some of those responders as paranormal beings who would use their gifts to help others. After all, they are New Yorkers too. As for love, many people were meeting for the first time who otherwise might not have met.

It was a dark day. It tested the courage and strength of a city. It inspired hope in finding survivors.

That day in New York City inspired us never to be without hope. May my book do the same. Thank you to the First Responders and to every person in New York who helped someone else.

Hi Everyone, Happy Mother’s Day! I know that there are some mothers who are far from their children. Please do something wonderful for yourself.

This includes the fathers who must be both father and mother, step-mothers, grandmothers, and pet moms. I’m talking about those unique people who step in to care for and nurture young ones when their mother can’t be there.

Happy Mother’s Day Weekend to all of you. You’re wonderful!

For some of us, Mother’s Day is a day for remembering our mother.

My mom, Artist Sultana Hanniford, former President of the Lyme Art Association and a Mystic Seaport Artist. She passed away in 2001.
